Tim Duryea Coach s Show Utah State head coach Tim Duryea will join Al Lewis on most Mondays throughout the men s basketball season from 6:05 to 7 p.m. The next show is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 8, and will be aired from Murdock Hyundai/Volkswagen located at 3131 North Main in Logan. Basketball Coach s Luncheon Utah State men s basketball will host eight coach s luncheons this season, hosted by the Big Blue Scholarship Fund. The next luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 11, in the Skyroom, located on the fourth floor of the Taggart Student Center on the USU campus. Looking at Utah State Utah State is on the year, including a 3-8 mark in the Mountain West. The Aggies are currently in the midst of a five-game losing streak, the longest of the year for USU. Utah State is averaging 71.9 points per game, while shooting 44.5 percent (570-of-1,280) from the floor, 36.2 percent (175-of-483) from behind the 3-point line and 67.9 percent (267-of-393) from the free throw line. The 11 wins were the most by any second-year program in the history of the conference. The Aggies return four starters in Smith, J. Moore, Julion Pearre and senior guard Darius Perkins. Head Coach Tim Duryea is in his first year at the helm of the Aggies, but has been a member of the staff for the previous 14 years under Stew Morrill. Duryea became one of just 12 head coaches in the history of Utah State basketball to post a win in their debuts, with the victory at Weber State. Aggies Picked Third In Mountain West Utah State men s basketball was selected third in the annual preseason Mountain West men s basketball poll. The prediction is the highest for the Aggies since joining the Mountain West and highest since USU was selected to win the Western Athletic Conference in its final season in the league during the season. Last Time Out LARAMIE, Wyo. - Utah State lost an decision at Wyoming on Saturday afternoon as the Cowboys made a school-record 20 3-point shots to seal the win. The loss dropped the Aggies to on the year and 3-8 in the Mountain West, while Wyoming moved to and 5-7 with the win. USU was led in scoring by junior wing Jalen Moore with 17 points and he was joined in double figures by senior guard Chris Smith with 13, and redshirt freshman forward Quinn Taylor with 10. As a team, Utah State shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the floor, 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from behind the 3-point line and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the free throw line. Wyoming was led by four players in double figures, including junior guard Jason McManamen with 20, senior guard Josh Adams with 19, and sophomore forward Alan Herndon and sophomore guard Jeremy Lieberman with 12 apiece. The Cowboys finished the game shooting 50.0 percent (28-of-56) from the floor, 52.6 percent (20-of-38) from behind the 3-point line and 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from the free throw line. Utah State was down at the intermission, 38-37, as Wyoming was strong behind the 3-point line over the opening 20 minutes, making 10 of its 13 field goals from long range. However, the Aggies were able to keep the game within reach, closing out the half by converting 10 of its last 12 shots. The offensive momentum didn t carry over for the Aggies after the break as Utah State converted just 1-of-14 from the floor over the first nine minutes of the final half. The lull opened a 20-point cushion for Wyoming, 62-40, with 11:01 on the clock. The Aggies finished the game 9-of-13 from the floor, and outscored the Cowboys 25-22, but ultimately lost the decision. Utah State at Wyoming Notables Utah State trailed at the half and are now 0-9 when trailing at the intermission. Wyoming shot 52.6 percent (20-of-38) from behind the 3-point line during the game, the most trey s converted against the Aggies this season. The 20 3-point shots marked a new school record for the Cowboys. Utah State shot 60 percent (15-of-25) during the first half to just 37.0 percent (10-of-27) in the second half. Utah State s bench outscored Wyoming s reserves and the Aggies are now 10-6 when the Aggie bench outscores their counterparts. Utah State committed nine turnovers, its sixth game with single-digit turnovers this season. Utah State only recorded nine assists, marking just the third game this season that the Aggies have not recorded double-digit assists. Junior wing Jalen Moore scored in double digits for the fourth consecutive game, 19th time this season and 52nd time in his career with his 17 points. Utah State took its first lead of the second half, 58-57, as sophomore wing Jalen Moore successfully converted an and-1 with 2:49 to play, capping a late 10-3 run by the home side. Freshman guard Julion Pearre hit a pair of free throws seconds later to keep Utah State up with 2:13 remaining in the game. New Mexico then made the most of four free throws as the Aggies were assessed a personal foul and a technical foul with 1:34 to play, taking the lead and held Utah State scoreless down the stretch for the win. The long distance buckets were two of seven 3-point shots converted by the Aggies in the first half as USU started 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from deep over the first 20 minutes. Junior guard Chris Smith hit the seventh 3-pointer of the half to give Utah State a lead, but it was answered by a three by New Mexico s Hugh Greenwood, one of a career-high six during the game, to give UNM a advantage. A pair of free throws by the Lobos led to the eventual margin going into the half. New Mexico then led throughout most of the second half before the late surge by the Aggies with just over two minutes to play. The Utah State defense also held the Lobos scoreless for close to six minutes in the final half, keeping the game close and opening the door for the final push. 11 Head Coach Tim Duryea North Texas, 1988 First Year (15th Overall) Head coach Tim Duryea (pronounced Dur-yea) will enter his first season at the helm of Utah State men s basketball in after having served as a member of the coaching staff for the past 14 seasons. Duryea had been the longest tenured assistant coach in program history before taking over in April of 2015 and becoming the 18th head coach for USU men s basketball. In his 14 seasons at Utah State, Duryea has been part of an Aggie program that has averaged 23.6 wins per season, advanced to the NCAA Tournament six times (2003, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011), and won five conference championships in the Big West (2003) and Western Athletic Conferences (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) while winning four conference tournament titles in the Big West (2003, 2005) and WAC (2009, 2011). In seven seasons leading up to his appointment as head coach, Duryea was in charge of an Aggie offense that traditionally was one of the best in the nation. The season was no different as Utah State led the Mountain West and ranked No. 14 nationally in 3-point shooting (.394), while also ranking second in the conference and No. 17 in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.38), and second in the conference and No. 19 nationally in fewest turnovers per game (10.4). Individually, USU had the best field goal shooter in the Mountain West in redshirt freshman forward David Collette, who was No. 14 in the nation at 59.1 percent (163-of-276). In , Utah State ranked second in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (.406), as well as No. 12 in assists per game (15.9) and No. 19 in assist-to-ratio (1.44). During the and seasons, USU ranked No. 24 nationally in field goal percentage at 47.5 and 46.9 percent, respectively, while ranking No. 28 nationally in field goal percentage (.470) during the campaign. During the season, Utah State ranked third nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (.414), ninth in overall shooting (.488) and 10th in free throw shooting (.758), and was the only team in the nation to rank among the top-10 in all three shooting categories. During the season, USU finished the year as the nation s best shooting team (.496) and ranked No. 17 in 3-point field goal percentage (.394). Duryea spent his first seven seasons at Utah State in charge of an Aggie defense that traditionally ranked among the top in the nation in points allowed, including No. 4 in 2002 (58.1), No. 8 in 2005 (57.8) and No. 9 in 2003 (60.0). During his time as an assistant at Utah State, the Aggies recorded a dozen 20-win seasons, including setting the school record for wins with a 30-5 mark during the season and a 30-4 mark during the campaign. USU also had 18 players earn a total of 30 all-conference honors during the past 14 years, including three WAC Players of the Year in Jaycee Carroll (2008), Gary Wilkinson (2009) and Tai Wesley (2011). Furthermore, USU had three players earn All-American citations a total of four times with Duryea on staff in Carroll (2007, 2008), Wilkinson (2009) and Wesley (2011). Along with his on-the-court responsibilities, Duryea also oversaw academic progress while as an assistant at Utah State, which resulted in 22 Aggies earning academic all-conference honors a total of 40 times over the last 14 years, while nearly 90 percent of USU s players during that time graduated. Prior to joining the Aggies, Duryea was the head coach at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College from During his two years at the helm, his teams produced a record and back-to-back trips to the Region Six Championships. A 1988 graduate of North Texas, Duryea began his coaching career in 1988 at Colorado State before moving on to North Texas in Duryea then went to Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College as an assistant coach for two seasons before becoming the head coach there prior to the season. Duryea played basketball at Denton (Texas) High School and Texas Pan-American before transferring to North Texas. At UNT, Duryea was a co-captain in 1988 for one of only three teams in school history to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Duryea and his wife Angie have 20-year-old twins, Tanner (son) and Taylor (daughter), and a 13-year-old daughter (Kaylee). Tanner is a sophomore lacrosse player at Westminster (Utah), while Taylor is a sophomore volleyball player at Dixie State (Utah).
