Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. (MT) from UCSB s Thunderdome (6,000). The USU-UCSB match-up will not be televised, but will be streamed online on BigWest.tv. The Aggies have an overall record of 1,502-1,032 (.593) in their 2,534 games played. USU became the 52nd team in NCAA history to reach the 1,500 total win plateau. Utah State is 2-0 to start a season for the first time in six years ( ) and for the seventh time in Stew Morrill s 16 seasons as head coach. USU is in pursuit of its first 3-0 start to a season since , when the Aggies opened 5-0, as well as the sixth 3-0 beginning to a season under Morrill. Utah State and UC Santa Barbara will be playing for the 64th time in series history this weekend, in what is the 11th-oldest rivalry in USU history, with USU leading the all-time series, The first game played in the series was on Dec. 7, 1970 with Utah State posting a home win, and the most recent time was on Feb. 18, 2012 in the ESPNU BracketBusters, with visiting UCSB winning, Saturday is USU s first road game of the season, and Utah State has won 28 of its last 46 road games (.622) and is (.555) in road games under veteran head coach Stew Morrill. Utah State is (.803) against teams from the state of California during the last 13 years, including (.647) on California soil. Utah State has three players on its current roster from the state of California in senior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield (Loomis, Calif./Del Oro HS/Yuba CC), senior forward Sean Harris (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin HS/Yuba CC) and freshman guard JoJo McGlaston (Dublin, Calif./Dublin HS). Utah State spent 27 years in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association/Big West Conference ( ) and won six tournament championships and seven regular season titles. USU s overall league record while a member of the Big West was (.615), while its record against current members of the conference is (.659) as Utah State has a winning record against every team in the league. USU head coach Stew Morrill is 12-5 (.706) all-time against UC Santa Barbara and (.733) against current members of the Big West Conference. Utah State is (.746) during the month of November under Morrill, having won its last five games in the 11th month, as well as winning its last two road games in the month. USU has only played once on Nov. 16, in known dates of games dating back to , doing so in 1996, when the Aggies hosted Simon Fraser in the season-opener, wining USU senior guard Preston Medlin enters Tuesday s game with 993 career points, needing seven more points to become the 36th player in USU history to reach the 1,000 career points plateau. MSU will only be the third SEC team to play at USU, as LSU played in Logan on Dec. 30, 1970, also won by the Aggies, 97-81, for USU s 2-0 home mark against SEC foes. A GLANCE AT UTAH STATE Utah State men s basketball is entering its first season in Mountain West with four returning starters as part of eight returning lettermen from last year s squad that started out 14-1, but lost all three of its returning starters to season-ending injuries by mid-season, as USU finished overall and 11-7 in Western Athletic Conference play. Last year was USU s eighth and final season in the WAC before joining the Mountain West on July 1, The campaign was USU s 14th-straight 21-win season, as Utah State is just one of just five teams in the country to win at least 21 games in each of the past 14 seasons along with Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas and Syracuse. Furthermore, it was the 23rd time in school history that USU had won 20 or more games in a season. 3 LOOKING AT UTAH STATE USU improved to 2-0 for the first time since , and the seventh time in Stew Morrill s 16 seasons as head coach, with a thumping of the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah Tuesday night. Senior center Jarred Shaw leads the Aggies with 18.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, posting his first double-double of the season and 10th of his career with 24 points and 10 rebounds against SUU. The senior duo of guard Preston Medlin and guard/forward Spencer Butterfield are both averaging 11.5 points per game. Medlin and senior guard TeNale Roland lead the team with four three-pointers, as Roland is 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) and Medlin is 4-of-10 (40.0 percent). Sophomore forward Kyle Davis chips in with 8.5 points and 5.5 rebounds adding a team-high 4.0 blocks per game, while junior forward Danny Berger adds 5.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, as well as 2-of-4 (50.0 percent) behind the arc. Sophomore guard Marcel Davis is averaging teamhighs of 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while Roland is adding 3.0 helpers per contest. As a team, USU is averaging 84.0 points per game, while shooting 52.8 percent (57-of-108) from the field, and 44.8 percent (13-of-29) from three-point range, in addition to 71.9 percent (41-of-57) at the free throw line. Defensively, the Aggies are holding the opposition to 61.0 ppg, while limiting opponents to 33.9 percent (40-of-118) field goal shooting, 17.9 percent (7-of-39) behind the arc and 83.3 percent (35-of-42) at the charity stripe. MEDLIN FOR 1,000 PLEASE, ALEX With 17 points in the season-opener and six points Tuesday, senior guard Preston Medlin has 993 career points and needs just seven points to become the answer to the Jeopardy question, Who is the recent member of the USU 1,000 Points Scored Club?, as Medlin currently has 987 career points. He has played in 77 career games, for a 12.8 career points per game career average. Medlin would become the 36th player in USU history to reach the 1,000 career points plateau, and the first since former teammate Tyler Newbold ( ), who is at No. 33 on the list with 1,014 career points. Shaw s 24 points and 10 rebounds led USU its first 2-0 record since , and the seventh time in Stew Morrill s 16 seasons as head coach. Tuesday s win was the Aggies 28th-straight home victory against in-state competition in improving to 30-1 at home against teams from the state of Utah in the last 14 years, including 7-0 all-time against Southern Utah. Senior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield netted 11 points, while senior guard TeNale Roland recorded 10 points. A total of 11 different players scored with all 13 players who were in uniform Tuesday seeing action. It was the Aggie debuts of senior forward Sean Harris, who missed all of his first season at USU last year with a knee injury, and freshman guards JoJo McGlaston and Viko Noma aea. It was also the season debut of junior forward Ben Clifford, who missed the preseason and last week s game against USC with a foot injury. SUU, which leveled its season record at 1-1 with the loss, was led by Trey Kennedy with 11 points, while Cal Hanks, a Logan, Utah native, posted 10 points off the bench. Casey Oliverson, who is also a Logan, Utah, native, and teammate of USU freshman forward Jalen Moore at Sky View High School, led the Thunderbirds with nine rebounds. USU shot a season-high 58.3 percent (28-of-48) from the field, making a season-high 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from three-point range, its best shooting from behind the arc in its last 24 games, dating back to last season, when Utah State shot 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from threepoint range against Southern Illinois on Dec. 22, The Aggies were 29-of-38 (76.3 percent) at the free throw line. The 29 made free throws are Utah State s most since making 32 free throws against Loyola Marymount on Mar. 21, 2012, a span of 36 games. Furthermore, USU s 38 free throw attempts are its most since attempting 39 against Utah on Nov. 24, 2010, a span of 101 games. Southern Utah made 16-of-53 (30.2 percent) of its field goals, including 3-of-15 (20.0 percent) from three-point range, as well as 22-of-26 (84.6 percent) at the charity stripe. USU doubled-up SUU in the rebounding department, 44-22, including 11 on the offensive glass which led to a 22-6 second-chance points advantage. Shaw s 10 rebounds were one of six different Aggies have four or more boards. The Aggies had twice as many assists as the Thunderbirds, 16-8, with sophomore guard Marcel Davis dishing out six helpers, while Roland notched four. Sophomore forward Kyle Davis, who played at SUU as a freshman before going on an LDS Church Mission, then transferring to USU upon his return, swatted a game-high three blocks, while Shaw added two. Utah State led from start-to-finish, jumping out to a 5-0 lead, on a three-pointer by Roland and a pair of Shaw free throws. Kennedy hit a three-pointer on SUU s next possession to pull the T-Birds within, 5-3, but that would be the closest they would get for the rest of the game, as USU went on a 14-4 run, starting by two Kyle Davis free throws and capped by a Marcel Davis layup for a 19-7 lead. The Aggie advantage grew to over 20 for the first time at after a jumper from Butterfield at the 7:02 mark, and USU took a lead into halftime. The Aggie advantage was 20 or more for the majority of the second half, swelling to 30 for the first time at with 4:37 to play following a layup by Roland. Moore made a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left for USU s largest lead of the night at 90-56, before SUU s Cal Hanks hit one free throw with 12 ticks for the final score at POST-GAME NOTES FROM SUU GAME Utah State is 2-0 to start a season for the first time in six years ( ) and for the seventh time in Stew Morrill s 16 seasons as head coach. Utah State shot a season-high 58.3 percent from the field, for its best shooting percentage from the field in its last 14 games dating back to last year. Utah State shot a season-high 62.5 percent from three-point range, for its best shooting from behind the arc in its last 24 games dating back to last season. Utah State s 90 points are its most since defeating Oakland, , on March 25, 2012, a span of 35 games. Utah State s 22 rebounds allowed are its fewest since Denver has just 19 rebounds on Feb. 14, 2013, a span of 11 games, while its 20 rebound advantage is its largest since outrebounding Western Oregon by 22 (43-21) on Dec. 8, 2012, a span of 28 games. Utah State has now won 28 straight home games against in-state opponents and is now 30-1 all-time at home against teams from the state of Utah under Morrill. Utah State has now won 33 of its last 42 overall games against in-state opponents and is against the state of Utah in the last 15 years, including a 7-0 record against Southern Utah. Utah State has now won 65 of its last 74 home games and improved to all-time in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum under Morrill. USU has won seven of its last nine and 121 of its last 127 games (.953) when holding its opponents under 60 points. Overall USU is (.921) under Morrill when allowing fewer than 60 points in a game. Utah State has won 86 of its last 88 games when leading at the half and is now over the last 15 years when leading at the half. Utah State is 2-0 this year and has won 93 of its last 99 games when scoring 70-plus points. Overall, USU is now under Morrill when scoring 70 or more points in a game.

5 SCOUTING UC SANTA BARBARA The Gauchos improved to 2-0 on the season after an win over UNLV Tuesday in Las Vegas, Nev., getting 21 points and nine rebounds from junior center Alan Williams and 19 points from senior guard Kyle Boswell, netting 5-of-7 from three-point range. Junior guard Zalmico Harmon, sophomore guard Michael Bryson and freshman guard Eric Childress all added nine points while sophomore forward Sam Beeler pulled down seven rebounds. The Gauchos beat Hawaii-Pacific, 76-50, on Nov. 8 in the season-opener. UCSB is averaging 81.0 ppg, making 48.6 percent (53-of- 109) of its field goals, as well as 41.2 percent (14-of-34) beyond the arc, in addition to 67.7 percent (42-of-62) at the free throw line. The Gauchos defense is holding opponents to 57.5 ppg, limiting them to 35.1 percent (39-of-111) field goal shooting, 40.0 percent (16-of-40) from three-point range and 50.0 percent (21-of-42) at the charity stripe. UCSB has a scoring margin, as well as a +8.5 rebounding margin ( ). The Gauchos are averaging 17.5 assists, 4.5 steals and 5.0 blocks per game, while committing just 8.5 turnovers per game. AGGIES-GAUCHOS SERIES HISTORY Utah State and UC Santa Barbara will be playing for the 64th time in series history this weekend, in what is the 11th-oldest rivalry in USU history, with USU leading the all-time series, The first game played in the series was on Dec. 7, 1970 with Utah State posting a home win, and the most recent time was on Feb. 18, 2012 in the ESPNU BracketBusters, with visiting UCSB winning, BIG WEST REUNION Utah State spent 27 years in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association/Big West Conference ( ) and won six tournament championships and seven regular season titles. USU s overall league record while a member of the Big West was (.615), while its record against current members of the conference is (.659) as Utah State has a winning record against every team in the league. USU head coach Stew Morrill is 12-5 (.706) all-time against UC Santa Barbara and (.733) against current members of the Big West Conference. UTAH STATE VERSUS THE GOLDEN STATE Utah State is (.803) against teams from the state of California during the last 13 years, including (.647) on California soil. CALIFORNIA AGGIES Utah State has three players on its current roster from the state of California in senior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield (Loomis, Calif./Del Oro HS/ Yuba CC), senior forward Sean Harris (Rocklin, Calif./ Rocklin HS/ Yuba CC) and freshman guard JoJo McGlaston (Dublin, Calif./Dublin HS). USU has only played once on Nov. 16, in known dates of games dating back to , doing so in 1996, when the Aggies hosted Simon Fraser in the season-opener, wining LOOKING BACK AT UTAH STATE S DAYS IN THE BIG WEST CONFERENCE Utah State s first win in basketball in the PCAA was at home against Fresno State, 56-49, on Jan. 9, 1979 and its first tournament win was that same year against San Jose State, 85-78, on March 1. Utah State won its first regular season championship during the season under then head coach Rod Tueller with an 11-2 record and won its first tournament championship during the season under Tueller with wins against San Jose State (80-72), UC Santa Barbara (73-66) and UC Irvine (86-79). Aggie fans would not see another regular season championship until Larry Eustachy s second year as head coach as he led USU to a 14-4 conference record during the season. Three years later, Eustachy guided Utah State to its second-ever tournament championship in 1998 with wins against Long Beach State (69-61), Cal State Fullerton (65-56) and Pacific (78-63). Current Aggie head coach Stew Morrill took over the program prior to the season and promptly turned Utah State into the conference s premier team. USU began its domination in the league during the season as it finished with a perfect 16-0 record and then won the tournament championship by defeating Pacific (64-41), Nevada (69-64) and New Mexico State (71-66). Utah State would repeat as tournament champions the next year with wins against CS Fullerton (74-43), Boise State (67-48) and Pacific (50-38). The Aggies would go on to finish tied for first in the conference in 2002 before losing to UC Santa Barbara (60-56) in the tournament championship game. After placing third in the Big West during the 2003 season, Utah State won its third tournament championship in four years by defeating CS Fullerton (89-83 ot), UC Irvine (62-55) and Cal Poly (57-54). Sophomore guard Preston Medlin led three Aggies in double-digit scoring with 14 points, and tied his career-high by dishing out a game-high eight assists. Senior guard Brockeith Pane netted all 13 of his points in the second half and junior forward Kyisean Reed tallied 10 points. Freshman center Jordan Stone led USU on the glass with a career-best tying eight rebounds, as the Aggies had a slim, 31-30, rebounding edge. James Nunnally led UCSB with a double-double, netting 24 points to go with a game-best 11 rebounds, while Orlando Johnson added 22 points. Johnson hit four three-pointers while Nunnally drained three triples, as the Gauchos made 8-of-15 (.533) of their three s. UCSB shot 53.2 percent (25-47) from the field and were also 14-of-21 (.667) at the free throw line. USU hit a paltry 26.1 percent (6-23) field goal shooting in the first half, but made 53.6 percent (15-28) in the second stanza, finishing the night at 41.2 percent (21-51) from the floor. The Aggies were 5-of-20 (.250) from three-point range and 17-of- 25 (.680) at the charity stripe. Utah State opened a 14-9 lead at 10:58 of the first half after a three-pointer by sophomore forward Mitch Bruneel, one of his two treys on the night, but UCSB stormed back and later opened up lead with four seconds remaining. USU nearly pulled within four points at the break, but sophomore guard E.J. Farris three-pointer at the half was a split second too late and waved off by the officials, making the halftime score remain, The Gauchos stretched their lead to at the 11:18 mark after a three-pointer from the left wing by Kyle Boswell. The Aggies rallied with 9-0 run which became a 17-5 spurt to cut the gap to after a three-point play by Pane with 6:14 to go. That would be the closest USU would get as the Gauchos reeled off nine unanswered to open a lead after a three-point play by Johnson, and the Aggies couldn t trim the margin to single digits until the final minute, before Bruneel hit a three from the left corner with 21 seconds remaining for the final score. USU-UCSB LAST MEETING AT SANTA BARBARA - Nov. 17, 2008 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Matt Formisano scored a put-back basket with three second to play to lift Utah State to a hard-fought road at UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 17, With the game tied at 59-all, Utah State s Gary Wilkinson missed a running layup that Formisano rebounded and scored on to give the Aggies the win. Formisano finished with six points and three rebounds. Sophomore forward Tai Wesley led Utah State with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Wilkinson added 11 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Jaxon Myaer also scored 11 points for the visitors. Chris Devine and James Powell each scored 14 points for UC Santa Barbara, but were a combined 11-of-28 from the field, including 2-of-9 from three-point range. Utah State used a 14-0 run in the second-half to take a lead with 7:52 remaining before UC Santa Barbara went on an 18-6 run to tie the game at 59-all with 29 seconds to play. UC Santa Barbara scored the first four points of the game before Utah State took its first lead at 7-6 on a layup by junior guard Stavon Williams. The Gauchos reclaimed the lead and held a 12-9 advantage before the Aggies went on a 13-2 run and led with 5:16 to play in the half. AGGIES BE REBOUNDING USU has picked up right where it left off in the rebounding department from last season. After a -1 rebounding deficit in the USC game, the Aggies bounced back to double-up Southern Utah at +22 at Utah State s 22 rebounds allowed are its fewest since Denver has just 19 rebounds on Feb. 14, 2013, a span of 11 games, while its 22 rebound advantage is its largest since also out-rebounding Western Oregon by 22 (43-21) on Dec. 8, 2012, a span of 28 games. Last year, USU finished the season ranked third in the NCAA and tops in the WAC for rebounding margin at The Aggies rebounding margin is helped by out-rebounding each of its last 15 opponents, going 7-8 over those 15 games. The one sophomore is forward Kyle Davis, who transferred to USU after returning from his LDS Church Mission. Prior to his mission, Davis played at Southern Utah, where he averaged 8.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game overall, including 10.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in conference action. Davis also ranked second on the team overall in blocked shots with 31 (1.0 bpg). He started the last 15 games of the season and logged double-digits in nine of those games. The six freshmen include four who can come in and contribute right away in forward Jalen Moore, center Carson Shanks, and guards JoJo McGlaston and Viko Noma aea, while two others are walk-ons in forward James Croasdell and guard Terrell Young. One of the new freshmen is a local talent with ties to Utah State in Moore, who is from Smithfield, Utah, where he was the Utah 4A MVP at Sky View HS in leading the Bobcats to the state title. Moore averaged 21.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game during his senior season. In the 4A semifinals vs. Bountiful, Moore drained a shot from near mid-court at the buzzer in OT for a win, making ESPN s SportsCenter and tabbed as the No. 2 Play of the Day, as Sky View snapped Bountiful s 20-game winning streak. Shanks comes to USU from Prior Lake, Minn., where he was a four-year letterwinner at Prior Lake High School. Shanks was a two-time all-conference honoree, averaging 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks per game as a senior, ranking as the third-ranked prospect in the state of Minnesota. McGlaston hails from Dublin, Calif., where he was a four-year letterwinner at Dublin High School, and was the Diablo Foothill Athletic League (DFAL) Player of the Year, as well as firstteam all-bay Area and first-team all-east Bay honors, in addition to second-team all-california Division II accolades. McGlaston led Dublin HS in scoring at 22.0 points per game in leading the Gaels to their first DFAL title since He added 7.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game, while shooting 58 percent from the field, including 38 percent from three-point range, netting a season-high 40 points in a game during the regular season while adding a NorCal Division II record 35 points, in Dublin s loss in the finals, while also pulling down 14 rebounds. A native of Las Vegas, Nev., Noma aea comes to USU after his LDS Church Mission. Noma aea was a two-year starter at Sierra Vista Mountain High School in Las Vegas, Nev., and was a two-time first-team all-nevada State Class 4A honoree, as well as earning first-team allregion honors, being named co-mvp of region. He also earned all-sunset-southwest League honors and was two-time team MVP for Sierra Vista. As a senior, Noama aea averaged 17.7 points, 5.3 assists and 5.9 rebounds per game, helping the Mountain Lions to a state semifinal appearance. He netted 20-plus points in 13 games his senior season, including two over 30, highlighted by season-high 35. Noama aea also recorded 17 games with five or more assists, including two with double-figure helpers, paced by season-high 11. Young is a Beehive State product, coming to USU from Salt Lake City, where he was a twoyear letterwinner at Judge Memorial High School. He averaged 9.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.6 steals per game in earning second-team all-region 9 and honorable mention all-state accolades. Young also ranked second on the team in scoring and three-pointers, making 1.7 treys per game. Croasdell comes to USU from Albuquerque, N.M., where he was a two-year letterwinner at Albuquerque High School. He earned all-district 5-5A honors as a senior after averaging 10.7 points, 13.9 rebounds, 4.1 blocks, 3.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game in helping the Bulldogs to a overall and 7-3 league mark, falling in the state tournament quarterfinals. 9 UTAH STATE NOTES AND TRADITION Over the last 14 years, Utah State has averaged 25.1 wins (351 total wins) and is one of just five schools in the nation to win at least 21 games in each of those seasons joining Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas and Syracuse. Over the past 13 years, Utah State has won seven regular season conference championships and six tournament championships. Utah State advanced to a school-record 13 postseason appearances, which was a school record, going to the NCAA Tournament in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011, to the National Invitation Tournament in 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2008, and the CollegeInsiders.com Tournament in 2012, before its postseason streak came to an end last season. Over the last 14 years, Utah State has gone 25-8 (.758) in conference postseason tournaments and has advanced to the championship game 10 times. The four WAC titles also ties a school record for most conference championships won as USU won four Rocky Mountain Conference Championships from Utah State finished the season ranked No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, marking the first time since 1978 that USU has been nationally ranked at the end of the season. It is also just the eighth time in school history that USU has finished the season nationally ranked. USU was ranked for nine straight weeks to end the year, which is its longest streak since the team was ranked for 11 straight weeks. Overall, it was the third time in the previous eight years that USU has been nationally ranked. The Aggies won 21-plus games from , which is a school record, bettering the old mark of three straight 20-win seasons from Over the past 14 seasons, Utah State has gone overall and in conference play. Those 351 wins are the sixth-most in the country over that time period, while its 75.2 percent winning percentage is the fifth-best in the country. USU PICKED FIFTH IN MOUNTAIN WEST PRESEASON MEDIA POLL Utah State men s basketball has been picked fifth in the Mountain West Conference Preseason Media Poll, as selected by a voting panel comprised of Conference media. Defending Mountain West regular-season and tournament champion New Mexico is the overwhelming preseason favorite to win the MW men s basketball regularseason title again in The Lobos received 23 of 24 first-place votes and 263 points to garner the top spot in the poll. UNLV claimed the remaining first-place vote and 214 points to tie with Boise State at the second spot, while San Diego State garnered 212 points for the No. 4 spot. Mountain West newcomer Utah State collected 156 points for fifth, followed by Colorado State in sixth (142 points) and Wyoming (112 points) in seventh. Rounding out the poll were Fresno State (96 points) in eighth, Nevada (84 points) in ninth, Air Force (61 points) in 10th and MW newcomer San José State (30 points) in 11th. The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in men s college basketball. This list was created by a committee of well-respected media members and influential people within college basketball from around the country. Medlin, a senior guard from Carrollton, Texas, is one of three Mountain West players on the 46-player list, along with Boise State s Derrick Marks and New Mexico s Kendall Williams. USU MEN S BASKETBALL THIRD IN NATION IN REBOUNDING MARGIN Utah State men s basketball ranked third in the nation in rebounding margin last season as part of ranking in the top 50 in three categories of the final NCAA Division I statistics, USU s +9.1 rebounding margin ranked the team third in the NCAA, and was also tops in the Western Athletic Conference. The Aggies rebounding margin was helped by out-rebounding each of its last 15 opponents, as part of 27 times overall. On the year, USU was 18-9 when out-rebounding its opponent in The Aggies were also 24th in the country in field goal percentage (.469). Utah State also ended 49th in assists per game (14.7), 63rd in won-lost percentage (.677) and 75th in the nation in assists-turnover ratio (1.12). Morrill became the winningest coach in school history on Jan. 17, 2008 in the Aggies win against Boise State, passing E. Lowell Romney ( ) who won 225 games in 22 seasons.
