COACH HENRY QUESTION & ANSWER -AUGUST In August as the student-athletes were set to return to Georgia State, Coach Lea Henry spoke about the upcoming season and what has happened since last March as the season ended. Coach Henry s life has been all about winning and accomplishments. As a player, she was a Kodak high school All-American, an All-SEC student-athlete, and a starter on an Olympic gold medal-winning team. As a head coach, her history has already included 210 wins at Georgia State in 13 years, four postseason tournament bids and eight straight winning seasons. In the last 10 years, she has won 179 games at State, averaging almost 18 wins a season. So, it was not a surprise when her first comments for the season preview were the obvious beliefs of a winner: Our goal is to win the Colonial Athletic Association championship this year. Here are her remarks from this pre-season conversation: Q What have you expected of your team since last March and what has been the message you have given them? In her 14th season, Coach Henry is excited by the potential for success of this year s squad A Everyone, from the returning players to the incoming recruits, understands that the goal is to become CAA champions. So, each one was challenged to commit to working harder in the summer months. They needed to have the attitude that they would do whatever it might take to make that championship approach become a reality. A benefit was that the returning student-athletes were able to stay on campus during the summer for classes and workout with our strength and conditioning staff. We expected each of the players to come back physically stronger and with a tougher mental approach. We challenged our returners to make at least 500 shots a day and to focus on improving their offensive skills. This effort should pay dividends as we start workouts and then full practices. Q What are some strengths you see in this year s team and what gives you the optimism to think championship? A After two successful years of recruiting in the CAA, we feel we have the type of roster that a team needs to have to be at the top tier in our league. In order to be at this level, we need to have physical size, athleticism and talent as well as players who can score consistently. With the five recruits added to our improving returning players, I think we have all the necessary ingredients. During our first two seasons, we were able to adapt defensively to the competition in the CAA, but now we need to put the offensive firepower with that effort. I believe that our athleticism will allow us to be a good rebounding team and that this team can apply the type of defensive pressure needed to guarantee

COACH HENRY QUESTION & ANSWER -AUGUST an uptempo game. I also feel that we still have the discipline and offensive skills in order to execute in the half-court. Q How would you describe this year s team and what do you know before practices even start? A Our first two years in the CAA have been a building process for us and I think this third year should be the turning point. The first year was all about adjusting to the competition in a league which sent four teams to the postseason in each of the past two years. The second year was about understanding our goals and focusing on improving as we moved up to the middle of the pack and were competing hard against the toptier teams. Now, we understand what it takes to be successful and are ready to fight for a conference championship. Junior Brittany Hollins was runner-up for CAA Defensive Player of the Year and has been a two-time All- Defensive team pick. She ranked 5th in the nation last year in steals per game and 28th in assists. Defense, as always, is a key to winning championships. With five talented new players and our eight letterwinners returning, we will hit the ground running to find out exactly what our strengths are. Our philosophy has been to give everyone the opportunity to compete for a starting position and playing time and then at some point to establish roles within the team. Winning a championship means having many players contribute, all with a common goal. One of the five recruits, Stacie Young, was a junior college All-America pick last year. Q Address your entirely new coaching staff for A We were so fortunate that our top three choices accepted offers to become a part of our staff. With the addition of Bridgette Gordon, Kyle Snipes and Gail Striegler, I feel we will have one of the best overall staffs in the conference. In Bridgette, we have one of the best players to ever play women s basketball. She brings instant credibility and a winning attitude after being an All-American at Tennessee, a gold medal winning Olympian, a WNBA player and an overseas professional player. A fierce competitor, she will be an excellent role model to our players who will have an on-court example of how hard work and determination leads to success. In Kyle, we gained someone with a background at two ACC schools and two years in the CAA who has a realistic knowledge of what it takes to win at this level. He will help with scouting and recruiting, and in all areas of student-athlete development. In Gail, we added someone with quality experience who really understands what it takes to be successful. She is an outstanding recruiter and will also be a tremendous asset both on and off the court in all areas of

COACH HENRY QUESTION & ANSWER -AUGUST student-athlete development. I have confidence in all three of these coaches and have empowered them with a great deal of responsibility. Every area of our program will take bigger steps forward as a result of their work with our student-athletes. We are also very excited that a former player, Evita Rogers, has returned to our staff as a Graduate Manager. Evita was one of the best players to ever wear a Georgia State uniform and has her jersey retired in the Sports Arena. She was a tremendous student and will be positive role model for our players. Q What do you know about this year s schedule? A We understand how tough the CAA is night-in and nightout. This league was ranked #8 in the RPI during the regular season and earned three NCAA bids and one WNIT bid. As a team, we have to understand that every game requires our best efforts to be successful. In our nonleague games, we have two ACC teams that earned NCAA bids. We play at North Carolina, March Newark, Del. three-time champions and a perennial top-10 team and we will host Georgia Tech, a 21- game winner and No. 7 NCAA seed last year. We will also play at a tournament hosted by UNC Asheville where we will face either the Big South champion hosts, who earned an NCAA bid after a 21-win season, or a WNIT postseason team in Davidson, which won 23 games. We will also host our traditional holiday tournament before heading into CAA play. Coach Henry s teams have cut down championship nets in their previous league. She expects this team to move up to the top tier of the CAA in its third season. Classes have already started for the Panthers and the hard work has begun as they prepare for the season-opening game on Friday, Nov. 9 at home versus Florida A&M. The season will culminate with the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in Newark, Del. from March with the automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament at stake and atlarge berths still available.

LEA HENRY HEAD COACH 14th SEASON AT STATE Lea Henry enters her 14th season as the head coach of the Georgia State University women s basketball program and 18th year overall at the helm of an NCAA Division I team. Under Henry, the Panthers have enjoyed over a decade of excellence as they have won at least 15 games in nine of the past 10 years, making postseason tournament appearances four times. Henry already holds the record for most career wins at State with 210 and has won 20 or more games in a season four times. What Henry has accomplished in Atlanta has been no small feat as she led Georgia State to a school-record eight straight winning seasons from to During that eightyear span, the Panthers put together an overall record of (.651), including (.703) within Atlantic Sun conference regular season play. Henry s overall collegiate coaching record over the past 17-plus campaigns stands at (.544), including a (.557) mark over her 13 seasons at State. In May 2004, Henry was chosen as an assistant coach, along with University of Florida head coach Carolyn Peck, for the United States Junior World Championship Qualifying Team, helping former University of Colorado head coach Ceal Barry with some of the top 18-and-under players in the country. Henry worked for USA Basketball much of the summer of 2004, preparing the U.S. Junior National Team for the 2005 Junior World Championship, held in July in Tunisia. Georgia State is making significant strides entering its third season in the Colonial Athletic Association under Henry. The squad recorded an even overall mark after the inaugural campaign, improving by six victories from the previous year and posting four more league wins. In , the Panthers battled through CAA competition for the first time, giving some indication of what the future holds with a solid showing at the CAA Tournament. State upset fifth-seeded William & Mary - a team that defeated the Panthers in two previous meetings - in the first round and battled well against No. 4 seed Hofstra in the quarterfinals. Henry recorded her 250th career victory following the Panthers triumph at Towson on Jan. 15, She collected her 200th win as Georgia State s head coach against Florida A&M on Dec. 18, Henry s success has come by recruiting top-flight players and turning them into some of the nation s finest talent. Most recently, Patechia Hartman became Henry s seventh conference Player-of-the-Year selection (2004 & 2005), including her fifth at Georgia State. By coaching 1997 conference Player-of-the-Year Etolia Mitchell, who pulled down 13.2 rebounds per game in , Henry is one of the few coaches to have developed both an NCAA national scoring leader (Andrea Congreaves in 1991 and 1992 while at Mercer) and rebounding

champion (Mitchell). She has coached 28 all-conference and all-rookie honorees in 13 seasons at State and 60 of her athletes have been named to their respective conference all-academic teams. An Olympic gold medalist, Henry came to Atlanta from former conference-rival Mercer, just down the road in Macon, Ga., where she was the head coach for four seasons. During her four years with the Bears, Henry led Mercer to conference regular season championships (1991 and 1992) in her first two full campaigns as a collegiate head coach and was chosen as the conference Coach of the Year both times. During those seasons, Henry coached Congreaves, a Kodak All-American, two-time Division I national scoring leader and three-time conference Player of the Year who spent time in the Women s National Basketball Association and also played overseas. Prior to taking over in Macon, Henry was an assistant coach at Florida (Gainesville) from She served as the interim head coach with the Lady Gators at the end of , posting a 3-3 record. Before Florida, Henry was an assistant coach at then-conference member Stetson (DeLand, Fla.) for one campaign. Prior to Stetson, she was a graduate assistant coach at her alma mater, Tennessee, under National Basketball Hall-of-Famer and all-time collegiate coaching wins leader Pat Summitt from while working on her master s degree. Henry earned a bachelor s degree in 1983 and master s in 1985, both from UT in physical education.. As a prep at Southwest Georgia Academy in Damascus, Henry was a Kodak All-American in From there, she became a four-year starter at Tennessee and a true coach on the floor at point guard. As a Lady Vol, she captained three teams that went to the Final Four and was twice recognized as an Academic All-American. For three consecutive seasons, Henry led UT in assists ( ), averaging 4.4 for her career (593 total). She finished her brilliant collegiate career with averages of 8.4 points and 1.7 steals per contest while shooting 46.6 percent from the field. Henry played in 134 games during her time in Knoxville, starting 123. In 1983, she was an All-Southeastern Conference selection and later received an NCAA post-graduate scholarship. The highlight of Henry s playing career occurred when she was chosen as the starting point guard for the 1984 United States Olympic Team that was coached by Summitt. In six contests, she averaged 4.2 points and 3.0 assists a game, playing with some of the best women s basketball talent ever assembled, including Teresa Edwards, Lynette Woodard, Anne Donovan and Cheryl Miller. Henry s squad, which earned the U.S. its first gold medal in Olympic women s basketball, played in front of raucous and enthusiastic crowds at The Forum in Los Angeles [Inglewood], which hosted the 1984 Games. Henry previously served on the USA Basketball Player Selection Committee, playing a role in picking the members of the 1996 Olympic championship team, and the NCAA Mid-East Regional Committee. She was also on the Women s Basketball Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year Selection Committee and has been a member of the NCAA Women s Basketball Rules Committee and Kodak All-America Selection Committee. She currently serves on the screening committee for the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Because of her outstanding collegiate, national, international and coaching career, Lea Henry was inducted into the Tennessee Lady Volunteer Hall of Fame in September 2005 and was enshrined into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in May Henry, who is originally from the Damascus/Colquitt area of Georgia, married Greg Manning in The couple resides in the Druid Hills community of Atlanta.
