The team will fly into Daytona Beach and be headquartered there for the entire trip. Coach Baldwin-Tener s first GSU squad opened the season on Nov. 12 at Georgia Tech in a loss. The Panthers got down early, but responded by outscoring the host Yellow Jackets, 36-31, in the second half. The Panthers return six letterwinners and will blend in two JUCO transfers and four freshmen from last year s squad. Baldwin-Tener returns to her Atlanta hometown after eight seasons as head coach at East Carolina in C-USA. She took last year s 23-win ECU team to the second round of the WNIT. Georgia State s top returning scorers are 6-foot-2 junior forward Chan Harris (11.0 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and 6-foot senior Angelique Burtts (10.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg). The Panthers look to get even more from six-foot-three sophomore center Cody Paulk, who started three games last year, while blocking 21 shots in just 193 minutes of playing time. Senior guard Traci Haltiwanger will look to add to her 68 career three-point baskets made. Point guard Lanajia Ernest and forward Letiecia Davenport were both all-conference JUCO players last year as they make the transition to Division I. The four freshman include Atlanta native Kendra Long, who signed with Georgia Tech last November, but later signed with GSU this summer. The Panthers will then look forward to the home opener on campus with the Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 27 and 28. COACH S COMMENTS ON ROAD TRIP We came away from the Georgia Tech opener with some positives, especially in the second half that we hope to build on. We have also used this week-long break before our next game to work on taking better care of the basketball. That is one aspect that has been glaring all pre-season for us and something our team needs to correct. We have worked on better offensive execution as well as rotation in our defense and our presses. Stetson and Bethune Cookman will both be a big challenge for our basketball team. We have very little Division I playing experience on our team. Even though the Tech game was away, we were still in the same city so it was not a normal routine that we will experience as we do on a typical road trip. So, will we adjust to that and prepare accordingly.

NEW STAFF HELPS GET PANTHERS READY In addition to new head coach Baldwin-Tener, GSU has a veteran staff of assistant coaches to help mold the team. Adrienne Shuler has 17 years of college coaching experience, including a six-year stint as the head coach at Appalachian State ( ). Shuler joined Baldwin-Tener for the past two seasons at East Carolina, helping last year s team to 23 wins and the WNIT bid. Shuler had also been the associate head coach at Furman and on that staff from She played her college ball at the University of Georgia. Jocelyn Wyatt also comes from two years with Baldwin-Tener on the East Carolina staff. Wyatt served two years as a GA at Georgia prior to that. She played college ball at Appalachian State under Shuler and her high school ball in metro Atlanta at Berkmar. Jonathon J.B. Barbaree returns for his second year at GSU and has 14 years experience on women s college basketball staffs. He is an Atlanta native and athlete at Rockdale County High School. PANTHERS ROSTER MAKE-UP The 12 active players include two seniors (Burtts and Haltiwanger), three juniors (Davenport, Ernest, Harris), three sophomores (Anderson, Paulk, Taylor) and four freshmen (Jordan, Long, Shepherd, Smith). The two redshirts are both juniors who will have two years left when they start playing next year (Hargraves and Means). Six of the 12 active players come from Georgia (Anderson, Burtts, Davenport, Harris, Long and Taylor). Two Panthers hail from Alabama (Paulk and Shepherd). Ernest comes from California. Jordan hails from North Carolina and Haltiwanger from South Carolina. Victoria Smith comes from the land down under, in Sydney, Australia. TO BE TOUGH AGAIN The had seven teams earn postseason bids last year and will likely be among the top 10 conferences again. Two of the three All-Americans return, who were both top five scorers in the N. Three teams are Top 25 in the preseason Mid-Major poll among the 22 conferences considered in that category.

4 COACH BALDWIN-TENER S COACHING STYLE Simply put, I believe in playing aggressively, whether on offense or defense. We will play with passion and hunger. Our staff will emphasize the fundamentals and how to prepare each and every day to get better. We want the ball to get up the floor as quickly as possible. We will work hard on the defensive end to get steals and rebounds in order to be able to take advantage of our team speed and score before the defense gets set up. I learned from Coach (Andy) Landers that working hard is extremely important. By that, I mean everyone always thinks they are working hard. I thought that in high school and then at Kennesaw, but when I got to his program, I learned I really could work a lot harder than I was. The players can always do more than they are doing, whether they realize that or not. What we are trying to do now is raise the level and the quality of play every single day. My transition has been pretty smooth at Georgia State and I give the players a lot of credit. They have really bought into what we explained and they understand now what we are trying to do and what we expect of them. I am glad the N moved back the start of practice to Oct. 4 and I think we have put that to good use with the combination of practice time and days off to give the players a chance to recover mentally and physically. - Head Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener GSU AND STETSON Georgia State has played Stetson 46 times in the two school s histories, mainly as Atlantic Sun rivals. And, the rivals kept it close as each team owns 23 wins in the series. The 46 games are the second most in GSU history vs. any opponent. Stetson won the last game played, March, 12, 2005 in the championship game of the A-SUN tournament in Dothan, Ala. Georgia State won the last regular season game, a win in Atlanta on Feb. 26, 2005, just two weeks before the title game. Each team is 13-8 on its home court in this rivalry and the teams are 2-2 in tournament play. Stetson has defeated St. Leo, 73-37, and lost at USF, 80-42, this season. GSU AND BETHUNE-COOKMAN Georgia State has never played the Wildcats of Bethune- Cookman of the MEAC, so this is a first-ever opponent. B-C defeated Florida Memorial, 70-53, in the opener and plays College of Charleston Friday, Nov. 19. GSU PLAYS DEFENSE Georgia State finished last season ranked No. 20 in the N in fewest points allowed (55.3). The Panthers led the in steals (10.9) and were No. 22 in the N in most steals. The Panthers made 10 or more steals in a game 19 times last year. They held 20 of their 30 opponents below 60 points.. If the defense turns possessions into quick offense, GSU loves that transition play as the Panthers have won 13 straight games when scoring 70 or more points. This year s season opener left room for improvement, but the Panthers did start the year with 12 steals, 21 forced turnovers and seven blocks against Georgia Tech. BURTTS: A SENIOR LEADER Angelique Burtts is back for a final season of college basketball as she will add to an already impressive resume. Burtts, the only player on GSU s team to start all 30 games last year, has 84 games experience with two years N and one year JUCO. The 6-footer has produced 41 double-figure scoring games in her combined career. She has 866 career points and 449 rebounds. Last year, she recorded a rare triple-double game with 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in a win over Murray State. She had a double-double against George. She scored 20 points in a game twice last year, both in wins for GSU over Drexel and Nicholls State. She can crash the boards and has three games with 10 rebounds and another pair with nine rebounds. A good passer, she had a pair of seven-assist games to go with the 11-assist game last year. Burtts was a third-team JUCO All-America pick at East Mississippi Community College (25-7 and Sweet Sixteen) as she led the way with 15.5 points and 7.9 rebounds. She had 10 double-double games in JUCO. Also an outside shooter, she has 40 three-point baskets in her three years. At Rockdale High in Conyers, Burtts averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds a game as a two-time All-State pick. The all-around athlete was fifith in the state championship in the long jump and was also a 200-meter sprinter. Angelique has a twin brother, Angelo. Sister Lakeia Stokes (Class of 04) played at Clemson and scored 953 points with 463 rebounds.

5 Head Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener Sharon Baldwin-Tener continues her ascent as a rising star and a proven winner. On April 16, she was named the ninth head coach in GSU history by Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick. In eight years, Baldwin-Tener turned the East Carolina women s basketball program around, winning 126 games, while earning postseason bids to the N and WNIT tournaments. The Lady Pirates of ECU won the C-USA Tournament in It is a homecoming for Baldwin-Tener as she played her prep ball in Smyrna and her college ball at both Kennesaw State and the University of Georgia. She was an assistant coach at Georgia and a head coach at Life University in Marietta. In , her ECU team was No. 37 in the N in scoring, while ranking No. 12 in three-point FG percentage, No. 14 in overall FG percentage, No. 19 in assists and No. 42 in rebound margin among the 345 Division I colleges and universities. Those eight years at ECU followed her season as the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year honor in her only season at Mercer University in Macon. She first gained notice as the NAIA National Coach of the Year at Life University, where she began that program with a final No. 7 ranking in its first year and produced a team ranked No.1 in the national polls in her second season (2001).
