Seven games have been five points or fewer with a minute to play. The Panthers have a three-point home win over William and Mary and other CAA wins by 10, 10 and nine points. The Panthers have lost the last 3 games by a combined 10 points. Northeastern (6-8 in the CAA) has a league win in OT, plus 4, 6 and 8-point wins. The Huskies beat first-place ODU in triple OT in Boston and lost to second-place Drexel in OT. NU has played five OT games this season. The gritty Panthers got off to a 9-2 season start and were gaining some teamwork and unity, but the losses of starting center Chan Harris (broken bone in foot) and guard Jylisa Williams (team suspension) forced a re-grouping. Georgia State s defense leads the CAA (56.3, No. 28 in the NCAA) as the Panthers have held 15 opponents to 60 points or fewer. The aggressive defense still ranks No. 28 in the NCAA in steals (10.9) despite losing the pair of defensive stalwarts mentioned above. The Panthers are No. 29 in turnover margin (+4.17) and No. 53 in assist-turnover ratio. GSU is also No. 76 in assists (14.4) to lead the CAA. State is No. 3 in the CAA in shooting percentage (41.6%). Senior Danyiell McKeller, photo left, leads the team in scoring with 18.7 per game, currently No. 24 in the nation. McKeller s 65 steals make her No. 2 in the CAA and her 6.2 rebounds make her No. 15. Senior Shay Rawls leads in rebounding (7.9, No. 7 CAA) to move into the top 10 in school history. Senior Brittany Graham leads with 44 three-point baskets. Crystal Johnson leads the CAA in assists again (5.6, 140 total) and is No. 19 in the nation as she seeks to better last year s 162, 5.53, and No. 20 ranking. Johnson is +64 in assist-turnovers and leads the CAA in that as well.

2 Georgia State Relies on DEFENSE to set the tempo Georgia State has a lot of positives in the statistical analysis of the season. The Panthers success starts with its defensive pressure: Lead the CAA in defense (56.3), No. 28 NCAA 2nd in the league in steals (10.9), No. 28 NCAA 3rd in the CAA in 3-pt defense (29.7), No. 72 NCAA 5th in the CAA in FG defense (38,3) 6th in the CAA in Blocked Shots, (77, 3.1) Offensively, the up-tempo Panthers prefer to work for the easier shot than the three-point basket and use the transition game: 3rd in the CAA in FG Pct. (41.6%), No. 90 NCAA 2nd in the CAA in Assists, (14.4), No. 76 NCAA 2nd in the CAA-Asst./TO ratio, No. 53 NCAA 3rd in CAA in Scoring Margin, (+4.8), No. 86 NCAA The senior trio of Shay Rawls, Brittany Graham and Danyiell McKeller lead the way. The Panthers are getting 18.7 points and 6.2 rebounds from McKeller, along with 65 steals. Rawls leads the squad in rebounding (7.9, No. 8 CAA) now that she is back as a starter and has moved into the top 10 rebounding list in school history with her 745. Sophomore Crystal Johnson, photo right, who led the CAA last year in assists, is back on top again with her current 5.6 average (No. 15 NCAA). Johnson is also No. 1 in the CAA in the assist turnover ratio (+64) and No. 36 in the NCAA. Junior Traci Haltiwanger adds experience off the bench and has 66 career threepoint baskets (17 this year) to provide more outside punch. She hit for three three-point baskets each in three of the last four games The Panthers crashed the boards hard last week with 42 and 40, including 20 offensive rebounds in each game. They had 16 more offensive rebounds vs. ODU. Eight of the 13 wins have been by 14 or more points with their season scoring margin sitting at a +5.0 on the year Georgia State is No. 144 of the 345 schools in the Feb. 15 in the Sagarin RPI rankings and No. 150 in the NCAA RPI. Graham, photo right, provides the outside fireworks with 44 treys at a.400 rate (No. 2 CAA). Graham has made 44 of her 110 treys with three games of four or more this year. Newcomer Angelique Burtts has been a big help with her 9.8 ppg.,113 rebounds, 69 assists, 47 steals, 13 blocks. The 13 wins already surpass last year s final total for the season (12). PANTHER NOTEBOOK NUGGETS Want to see how fast a Panther is? Try running with them and see they like going real fast. The Panthers have won 13 straight games when scoring 70 or more points, including 5-0 this year. Want to see how fierce and protective a Panther is of a basket? Play half-court slow-down and see they like that even better. The Panthers have won 50 straight games when holding the opponent to 50 or fewer points, including 7-0 this year. The Panthers are shooting 41.6% from the field for the season (No. 90 NCAA). Georgia State s defense has kept most opponents below their season scoring average...state ranks No. 28 in the nation in defense (56.3), holding 15 of its 25 opponents to 60 points or less. This year, the defense has forced 511 turnovers (20.4 per game) and made 272 steals (10.9 per game, No. 27 NCAA). State is No. 6 in CAA in blocked shots (77, 3.1 per game) Versatile, the Panthers have started seven different players so far this season. Only two have started all 25 games (McKeller, Burtts). Georgia State is 5-6 on the road this year, while sitting at 8-6 at home as a result of the losses to the two Top 25 teams in the GSU Sports Arena, Florida State (22-4, 16 RPI) and Ga. Tech (20-5, 29 RPI), as well as VCU (16-9, 9-4), James Madison (18-6, 8-5) & Northeastern (11-14, 6-8) and ODU (14-10, 12-2). CHALLENGING SCHEDULE Of the 345 Divsion I schools, this year the Panthers 12 losses have come to Florida State (16 Sagarin/18 CBN), Ga. Tech (29/30), James Madison twice (53), ODU twice (61), VCU twice (100), Delaware (106), Towson (119), Hofstra (120), NU (143), meaning all the losses are to teams in the top 40% of the country. The best wins have come over Towson (119), Iona (166), UNCW (173). All 12 schools in the CAA are in the Top 235 in the ratings (top 70%), meaning all league games are tough. BEST SHOOTING HALVES OF THIS SEASON That is similiar to last year when she opened with 24 points and 11 rebounds in the opening win at Clemson and then had 23 points against Northeastern before her injury. But, last year s season took a sour turn for the Panthers from the solid 9-4 start after she injured both her knees and missed over a month of action. McKeller was averaging nearly 15 points a game last year in that fast start of her junior year. McKeller s last double-figure game was the 59th of her career as she sits at 1,282 career points and 616 rebounds. She has that confidence back now that made her a 1,585-point scorer in North Carolina prep ball (Westover High in Fayetteville, N.C.) as she averaged 17.5 as a senior in high school. McKeller has topped the 20-point mark 19 times in her career, 13 this year. Mathematically, she just moved into 10th place all-time and needs 78 points to catch Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen in 9th. She is 3rd in the CAA for the season with 44 of 110 (.400). She s made 84 treys so far in 55 games at Georgia State after a 48-made sophomore season in junior college. She was 4-for-4 this year in treys vs. James Madison in game 1 and 4-for-6 in game 2 and has a most-made 5-of-6 last year in a win at Clemson and five made last year at Towson. She s been 3-for-4 outside the arc in two other games this year (Georgia Tech and UMES). She hit the final basket of the game in the win over W&M on Feb. 7. SCORING MACHINE Senior Danyiell McKeller is used to scoring, but she has figured out how to do it with double-teams, box-and-one defenses and a host of ways designed to stop her jumper. McKeller has 19 games with 20 or more points in her career and 13 games of 20 or more this year. 7 Georgia State Basketball Notes - Page 7 NEW PANTHERS HAVING AN IMPACT Angelique Burtts, #2, was a junior college third-team All-America honoree last year with her 15.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, 72 steals, 22 three-point baskets and 19 blocks as an all-around performer on both ends of the court. At Georgia State, she has shown to be a valuable contributor in all those ways. She is one of a select group in the NCAA to have produced a triple-double game this season with 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in a GSU win over Murray State of the OVC. Burtts added a double-double to the list with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the win at George Mason. She had 10 double-doubles last year in JUCO play. She has had 13 double-figure games this season, topped by the 20 points in the win over Nicholls State on 9-of-10 field goals. She also had 16 in the win over UNC Wilmington and 15 in the win over Kennesaw State, meaning the Panthers are 5-0 this year when she scores 15 or more. She has scored 244 points (9.8). The six-footer does most things well. She s a rebounder (40 in the last 6 games) with 113 on the season (4.5). She s a thief with 47 on the season (third on team) and a top game of six steals. She s a passer with 69 assists (second on team) and three games with seven or more. She can jump with her 13 blocked shots (third on team). She can stop outside and make the three-point shot (10 on the season). Counting JUCO, Burtts has 36 double-figure scoring games and 11 career games of 20 or more points. She s also a winner with the Panthers, after a 25-7 Sweet 16 season last year, and a 24-6 senior high school campaign at Rockdale High in metro Atlanta. Freshman Cody Paulk, #33, has used her 6-foot-3 size to help the Panthers, especially since starting center Chan Harris got hurt. Paulk blocked five shots in the Feb. 7 win over William and Mary, while hitting 3-of-4 shots for six points. The freshman has now seen 95 minutes of time with 14 blocks, 15 rebounds and 16 points as she makes the adjustment to CAA basketball after high school. In Alabama last year, Paulk averaged six blocked shots a game on a 25-5 team that was No. 4 in the state. The 3.86 scholar in her first semester at GSU was a National Honor Society and Mathematics Club honoree in high school so she is learning things quickly. Freshman Erika Sumpter, #30, has logged 130 minutes. The 6-0 post player has shown a nice outside shot, hitting 61.5% from the field (16-of-26) for 40 points. She s also 80% from the free throw line (8-of-10). Sumpter has added 23 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 blocks. Freshman Tiffany Anderson has played 100 minutes with 21 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 steals. Freshman Jerlisa Taylor has played just nine minutes, but scored 7 points in that short time, to go with 2 rebounds.

14 Game 1: Nov. 14, 2009, 5:00 p.m. GEORGIA STATE 77, KENNESAW STATE 52 Kennesaw, Ga. (KSU Convocation Center) In the season opener on the road, Georgia State got 22 points and 11 rebounds from 6-foot-2 Chan Harris as well as 22 points and seven rebounds from senior forward Danyiell McKeller. Newcomer Angelique Burtts added 15 points and seven assists in her first game in the blue and white. The Panthers full-court defense forced 28 turnovers and had 12 steals in showing the form that ranked them No. 10 in the nation last season in steals. Georgia State shot 57.6 percent in the first half and 55.6 in the second half for a solid game of 56.7 percent. State s defense held Kennesaw State to 39 percent from the field. Georgia State s dominance saw them scored 46 points in the paint tonight. We felt we could have a good inside presence tonight with our size and experience and we did, especially in the first half, Coach Lea Henry noted postgame. Our guards were patient and worked the ball inside well. I am pleased with our offensive execution. Georgia State started strong with a quick 6-0 burst and built the margin quickly to 19-4 over the first seven minutes of the game with Harris going on a run scoring nine of 11 points for the Panthers in the early stretch. The host Owls never got the lead back into single digits and State built the cushion to by halftime, with Harris having 18 points in the opening half. The visiting Panthers roared back out of the locker room in the second half by scoring the first six points and increasing the margin to 28 points at just two minutes into the second half with Harris and McKeller adding quick buckets. Georgia State got to use all the players on the roster and the closest Kennesaw State could ever get was with seven minutes to go before State had another burst to get it back over 20 points to stay The taller Panthers held a rebound margin. The opening-day win marks a second straight season the Panthers have done so, following last year s season-opening win at Clemson, State s passing game was excellent with 18 assists...state s 12 steals is right on pace with last year s final 11.8 per game average that ranked no. 10 in the nation...mckeller notched her 38th career double-figure game with her 22 points. That marks the 7th 20-plus point game for the senior forward...the Panthers played all 10 players who dressed, as junior Traci Haltiwanger and sophomore All-CAA rookie Jylisa Williams did not dress out. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Tenth-ranked Florida State held off scrappy Georgia State, 66-53, Sunday afternoon as the Panthers second-half rally made it closer than the final score might indicate. Florida State (4-0) won its 12th straight road game, but Georgia State (1-1) didn t go down without a fight. The host Panthers made a second-half rally to close within five points twice, the last at with 11:11 on the clock. Georgia State was still battling at with 7:56 just after the Seminoles All-America 6-foot-5 post player Jacinta Monroe went down with a knee injury at 8:28. The physical game hampered Georgia State s press and ability to drive on offense and saw two starters foul out (Danyiell McKeller and Crystal Johnson) and two more end with four (Chan Harris and Angelique Burtts). Georgia State s rally saw them shoot 60.9 percent in the second half and outscore Florida State in the second half, But, the host Panthers had dug a big hole by shooting just 24 percent in the first half. I liked how the team fought today, even when they got down, Coach Lea Henry said. We gave ourselves a chance to win today, despite all the foul troubles. I had told the team before the game that three things could happen: we could win, we could battle hard to the finish and be competitive or we could lose badly. I said two of those three would be really good for us. And, we did battle hard to the finish, so I think we can be excited about the long season ahead. Florida State is a top 10 team with a great coach and great athletes and they earned the win today. In the first five minutes of the game, FSU held a 9-7 lead. But, a trio of treys, plus four points from Monroe, sparked a huge 16-0 run that made it 25-7 with 8:11 in the first half. The visitors held a halftime lead. It was still with 15:16, but then Georgia State and Danyiell McKeller really went to work. The Panthers went on an 8-0 run to close to with 13:55. After a Monroe basket for FSU, State grew that run to 13-2 as Graham hit a back door lay-up and then a trey to make it at 11:48 and the game was back on. But, Harris and McKeller each had four fouls by this point and Johnson and Burtts were playing with three fouls. Brevard and Monroe scored down low to grow the lead to 11 at at 9:15, but Georgia State answered back with a jumper, followed by a pair of free throws from McKeller made it with 7:56. Four more free throws by Florida State moved the lead back into double figures and the visitors held a advantage with 3:47 left. #10 FLORIDA STATE 66 (4-0) Harvin, f Monroe, f Bravard, c Gray, g Ward, g Clayton Deluzio Hunnicutt Keough Davis Totals FG% 1st: % 2nd: % Game: 45.1% 3P% 1st: % 2nd: % Game: 42.9% FT% 1st: % 2nd: % Game: 58.3% GEORGIA STATE 53 (1-1) Burtts, f McKeller, f Harris, c Graham, g Johnson, g Anderson Rawls Sumpter Paulk Totals FG% 1st: % 2nd: % Game: 41.7% 3P% 1st: % 2nd: % Game: 37.5% FT% 1st: % 2nd: % Game: 50.0% FLORIDA STATE GEORGIA STATE Officials: Douglas Cloud, Angelica Suffren, Diana DePaul Attendance: 614 Game 3: Nov. 27, 2009, 2:00 p.m. GEORGIA STATE 87, MURRAY STATE 72 Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Georgia State raced past Murray State, 87-72, in the opening game of the Georgia State Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday afternoon. The host Panthers (2-1) had four players in double figures, led by a rare triple-double from junior forward Angelique Burtts. Burtts produced just the third triple-double in school history with her 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Danyiell McKeller netted 21 points and nine rebounds for a third consecutive over 20 this season. Georgia State trailed at halftime with foul trouble (14 fouls and six players with two each) and cold shooting (28.6% on 14-for-49). But, the second half was totally different with a 54-point burst and 57.7% shooting. The host Panthers hustled to a rebound advantage for the game, buoyed by 21 offensive boards. Murray State, who came in averaging 80.8 points and nine three-point baskets a game, made just four-of-13 outside the arc in today s loss. We were frustrated with fouls in the first half and we challenged the team to play like they really can, Coach Lea Henry said. We were rushing our shots even though we were dominating with 49 first-half shots to their 21 shots. We beat a good team today. Murray State plays hard and tough and this was a big challenge. Georgia State led early by eight and were leading 12-8 just six minutes into the game when McKeller went to the bench with her second foul, not to return until the second half. Murray State rallied to tie the game for the first time at 27 with 5:12 in the half and built seven-point leads twice, the last with 1:09 in the half. Murray State hit 14-of-17 free throws in the first half to just 4-of-4 by State. In the second half, Georgia State got the game tied at 48 in the first three minutes of the half, got the lead at 50-48, and Murray State tied it at 50 with 15:50 on the clock. The Panthers outscored the Racers 14-4 over the next five minutes, sparked by McKeller, and held a advantage at 10:30. But, Murray State wasn t going down without a fight and came back to tie the game for a fourth time at 68 with 4:31 left. A trey by Johnson gave GSU the lead it would never lose. It was with 2:36 left when GSU dominated the finish with a final 15-2 run. The 87 points are the most for GSU since scoring 87 vs. Towson on Feb. 11, The aggressive Panthers scored 24 points off turnovers today. 15 Game 4: Nov. 28, 2009, 4:00 p.m. GEORGIA STATE 61, TROY 45 Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Game 5: Dec. 5, 2009, 5:00 p.m. GEORGIA STate 58, PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE 44 Clinton, S.C. (Templeton Center) Game 6: Dec. 12, 2009, 2:00 p.m. GEORGIA STATE 79 NICHOLLS STATE 50 Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Georgia State rode its pressure defense to a romp over Troy for the championship of the Georgia State Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday afternoon. Morgan State defeated Murray State, in the consolation game. Georgia State (3-1) used 16 steals and 27 forced turnovers in today s win that was sparked by a 23-0 first half run to go from a tie at 11:50 to a lead at 1:55 in the opening half. During that 10:12 of holding Troy without a basket, Georgia State forced seven turnovers, had five steals and blocked a shot. Of course, that defense has been State s trademark after ranking #10 in the nation last year with 11.8 steals per game. Georgia State and Troy traded early leads and ties in the first eight minutes when Georgia State upped the pressure and took over the game. McKeller s steal and lay-up started the long run where she scored eight points and Johnson had six points during the 23-0 domination. The Panthers grew the lead to 25 points at with 11:53 to play and had increased it 27 points at with 4:02 left when the four freshmen got the final minutes as Troy cut into the final margin. The 45 points allowed is a season best, lowering the 52 allowed to Kennesaw State. Georgia State has won its three games by 25, 16 and 15 points, losing only by 13 to No. 9 Florida State. In addition to McKeller s MVP award, the all-tournament team was made up of Angelique Burtts and Crystal Johnson of Georgia State, Donette McNair of Troy, Corin Adams of Morgan State and Mallory Luckett of Murray State. Troy (3-2) was paced by forward Donette McNair s 13 points and six rebounds to go with Kirsten Smith s 12 points and eight rebounds We made some adjustments and got after them more in the first half and that 23-0 run was certainly the difference in the game, Coach Lea Henry noted. The 40-point first half carried us and gave everyone a chance to play some today. We are committed to our defense and what we are trying to do, Henry continued. We are long and have size to play a zone or quick and athletic to play man, whether we do either full-court or half-court. Georgia State won its third straight game with a decision over host Presbyterian College on Saturday evening in Clinton, S.C.. Georgia State (4-1) used its full-court pressure defense to amass 13 steals, force 24 turnovers and block five shots in the win over Presbyterian (0-9), a school that has played one of the toughest early-season schedules in the nation. The Panthers were led by senior forward Danyiell McKeller, who scored 22 points, just above her 20.5 season average that ranks her in the top 25 in the nation. Junior guard Traci Haltiwanger played her first game of the season and knocked down three 3-point baskets, while junior wing Angelique Burtts added nine more points and five rebounds. Georgia State dominated early in rolling out to a 15-2 lead over the first 10 minutes of the game with McKeller scoring 12 of those 15 points to go with a Haltiwanger trey. State built the lead to 22-5 at 4:26 and took a lead into the halftime break. In the second half, visiting State applied more defensive pressure and held a lead with 10 minutes to play. The Panthers had their largest lead of the game at with 6:50 to play and the reserves scored only five points the remainder of the game. We were a little out of synch with the early foul trouble on a couple starters and had players moving to different positions, but the positive is we got a lot of minutes from a lot of players to help us later, Coach Lea Henry said. We didn t adjust to the calls and were too aggressive, but we got another road win, so we are happy. Their zone obviously kept the score down a little and we only had our good tempo during the first part of the second half, Henry said. Presbyterian College, who has played one of the toughest schedules in the nation this year and was hosting its home opener, was led by Amanda Mills, who scored 15 points, including 10-of-14 from the free throw line. Mariah Pietrowski added 13 more points for the Blue Hose. Georgia State will take a short break for final exams and return to action next Saturday when it plays host to the Nicholls State Colonels Georgia State women s basketball team won its fourth straight game by racing past Nicholls State, 79-50, Saturday afternoon. Basically, it was a typical Georgia State win that started with the defense that forced 31 turnovers and made 14 steals, just above the 11.4 season steals average that is in the top 25 in the nation. The defense held a third consecutive opponent to 50 points or less for just the third time in school history. Offensive, State won its 11th straight game when scoring 70 or more points and topped their league-leading shooting percentage of 45 with a 55.6 percent day from the field today. Georgia State (5-1) got a stellar 9-of-10 field goal performance from junior wing Angelique Burtts as she led the team with 20 points and four steals. Senior forward Danyiell McKeller shot 50% for her 16 points and six rebounds, while junior forward Chan Harris hit 5-of-7 shots for her 13 points. Shay Rawls led with seven rebounds and Crystal Johnson led with five assists. Nicholls State (2-6) saw its one-game win streak end, but had three players in double figures. Richsanda Bickham had 12 points before fouling out, while Alisha Allen and Jamia Akins each added 10 points. The host Panthers ran off the first six points of the game and never looked back. They built the lead to 15-6 just past the midway point of the first half. They had it to 22-8 at 5:42 before Nicholls made a run to close to at 1:10 before the hosts took a lead into the halftime break. In the second half, Georgia State opened with a quick 13-4 run to make it after the first five minutes of that half. After Nicholls State closed to 44-30, Georgia State had another 15-8 run to make it with 8:30 to go. We bothered them by being so active and forced a lot of turnovers, Coach Lea Henry said postgame. We really got our tempo going in the second half and shot the ball very well that second half. Angelique (Burtts) was huge today and she is capable of exploding on offense like that at any time. It was good to get Jylisa Williams back for the first time this season and we will have to get used to all our rotations now and work together no matter who is in the game. But, we played with energy and effort today and it was another good win. Georgia State got a career-best 26 points from senior forward Danyiell McKeller, who came in averaging 20 points a game to rank in the top 25 in the nation. This 11-of-18 shooting game was her fourth of 20 or more points this season. Junior wing Angelique Burtts added 12 points, while sophomore guard Crystal Johnson provided 11 more points and seven assists. Senior forward Shay Rawls led the team with nine rebounds. Georgia State, who ranks No. 15 in the nation in field goal percentage and leads the CAA at 46.8%, shot 65 percent in the first half and 57.1% for the game by hitting 28 of their 49 shots. We communicated well on defense, played a rare zone for us, and were patient in what we were doing, Coach Henry said. Our defense frustrated them and we played with a purpose. I am thrilled at how hard the team is competing. This group really wants to do well and they are working hard. On Danyiell McKeller, Coach Henry noted: Danyiell is so active in getting open and creating shots. And, she leads by her example of playing tough defense and coming up with the five steals like she did tonight. The key run in the game came in the first half. Georgia State opened a quick seven-point lead at 11-4, but the host Hornets tied the game at 13 at 9:15. An increase in the defensive effort sparked a 16-1 run over those final nine minutes of the half and the Panthers went into halftime with a cushion. The closest Delaware State ever got again was when the Panthers quickly answered with a 10-0 run to make it with a little under nine minutes to play. The 24-point win was just under the 29-win point win Saturday over Nicholls and the 25-point win over Kennesaw State as the Panthers have won all six games this year by 14 or more points. The Panthers defense limited the Hornets to 42 tonight, just below the 44 to Presbyterian College and the 45 to Troy University. The Panthers started with game with a 6-4 lead when the host Gaels went on a 10-0 run to take a 14-6 lead and held that at 17-8 with seven minutes played. But, the Panthers and McKeller went to work and had a big 11-0 run that got them the lead back at at 8:53.. After a tie at 23 at 6:15, a McKeller basket gave State the lead it would never lose. State led by eight at halftime, Georgia State was cruising along with a lead at 10:40 and a lead with just 5 minutes to play when Iona began a comeback that cut the lead to with a minute to play as visiting State missed six shots and two free throws in that span. McKeller hit four free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the win. We played in a tough environment tonight, but did what we needed to do to win the game, Coach Henry said. This team expects to win and they have the will to go out and do it. When things don t go as expected, you have to focus and play through that adversity. The Panthers were to return home Saturday to face top-25 ranked Georgia Tech on Tuesday. But, an airplane problem, coupled with a foot of snow, forced the Panthers to stay longer and not get back to Atlanta until Sunday evening. Georgia Tech (No. 24 AP) took advantage of its inside game with 17 points from 6-foot-2 Brigitte Ardossi and 16 points from 6-foot-5 Sasha Goodlett. Goodlett scored 11 of Tech s 15 points from 13:08 to 4:07 with points in the paint and free throws. Point guard Metra Walthour added 10 points with 6-6 free throws in the closing minutes. Team leader Alex Montgomery played 21 minutes off the bench to provide eight points and seven rebounds, including a clutch late three-pointer, in her comeback from her knee surgery last spring. Georgia State, whose only loss this year are to a pair of top 25 teams, got 14 points from Danyiell McKeller and 13 points and seven assists from Angelique Burtts. The Panthers missed 6-foot-2 center Chan Harris, who is now out for the season with a broken foot. Brittany Graham provided a firsthalf spark by coming off the bench to hit three three-point baskets. Both teams are nationally ranked in defense and steals, with State forcing 21 turnovers and making 13 steals today, while Tech forced 15 State turnovers and made seven steals. Tech could manage just 35.7% shooting against State s defense and State could hit just 32.8%. State was No. 9 in the NCAA before today with a 47.8% average. A big difference was Tech getting 21 free throw attempts to only six by Georgia State. Georgia Tech made 15 of its baskets in the paint to go with the 19 free throws. The teams traded baskets early with Tech getting a 10-8 advantage five minutes into the game. The Yellow Jackets went on a 8-2 run to open its largest lead at with 11:11, but host State forged back into an tie, the third of the game, at 6:15 with its 8-0 spurt. When McKeller banked home a shot at 2:55, State got a lead. But, Tech responded to close out the first half with a lead. In the second half, the battle continued with a McKeller basket closing the score to at 13:21. Every time Georgia State would close within 3 points, four times over the next eight minutes, big six-foot-five Goodlett would provide the answer down low for Tech. Angelique Burtts brought State within at 5:31 and the P1anthers had a three-on-two break to forge another tie, but misfired up close. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Georgia State breezed to a victory in the opening game of the 16th Annual Georgia State Invitational at the GSU Sports Arena. Mississippi Valley State and Maryland Eastern Shore were set to play the second game. The Panthers (8-2) had its season-low defense and made this a fifth team held to 50 points or fewer points. Georgia State, who leads the CAA in almost every defensive category, forced 25 turnovers, made 13 steals, blocked 10 shots and held UT Martin to 27.9% from the field. Senior forward Danyiell McKeller led the scoring with 19 points in her 28 minutes of action, with Shay Rawls adding 10 points, making six rebounds and blocking three shots. Angelique Burtts led the defense with four steals, while adding eight points and three assists. UT Martin (1-9), who has lost three players to knee injuries this season, was led by nine points each from Paige Smith and Cali Cupples. The first game back after a break you have to work to get your timing back and it is good to get this win and move on to the championship game tomorrow, Coach Lea Henry said. Our defense was aggressive and forced them to struggle against us today. Playing against the zone today slowed things down, so we want to play with better tempo tomorrow. Coach Henry was pleased with the ball control that allowed just 10 turnovers, while allowing just five steals when they had the possession. Georgia State opened the second half with a 17-7 run, sparked by McKeller, to get the margin from at halftime to with 10 minutes to play. The Panthers were able to get 61 minutes of the 200 in the game from the bench in this game. Seven players had a steal and five had a blocked shot. The Panthers shut down UT Martin with just 23% shooting in the second half. The game began with McKeller hitting a pair of jumpers to get State started 4-0. A Weatherly three-point basket made it 4-3, but the host Panthers got two more baskets from McKeller and a two treys from Graham to open a quick 16-5 double-digit lead seven and a half minutes into the game. A trey by Cupples cut it to eight points before a lay-up by Rawls just under 10 minutes made it a double-digit lead that would stay from that point on. Georgia State s nationally-ranked defense forced 19 turnovers, made 10 steals, blocked nine shots and held UMES to 29.3% shooting on the evening. This was a physical, rough game, but the team stayed focused and got the job done, Coach Lea Henry said. We are pleased to be 9-2 finishing up the non-conference portion of our schedule, bowing to only a pair of top 25-ranked teams. We have worked hard to prepare to get to this starting point of the CAA and will be ready to host the opener on Sunday, Henry continued. I will be watching film on New Year s Eve, but I wish all our fans a Happy New Year. We dedicated this tournament win to Chan Harris, recovering from her surgery last week on her foot, Henry added. Chan is an important part of our family and we hope she has a speedy recovery and knows we are all thinking about her. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Georgia State outshot Towson from the free throw line to post a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win. Georgia State (11-5, 2-3) nailed 31-of-41 free throws (76%) while visiting Towson (8-8, 2-3) made just 21-of-38 (55%) of their charity tosses. The Panthers shot 20 free throws in the last 2:00 of the game as Towson kept fouling to try to close the deficit. The Panthers improved to 7-3 at home and 2-1 in the CAA at home behind senior forward Danyiell McKeller s personalbest tying 26 points (9-of-15 FG) as well as eight rebounds and sophomore guard Jylisa Williams 15 points. Point guard Crystal Johnson added 13 points and nine assists, while senior forward Shay Rawls led with 10 rebounds. Towson s Shanae Baker-Brice, averaging 19.4 per game after 32 and 28 points in her last two outings hit just 5-of-26 shots today for 14 points. We watched extra tape this week to show the kids that winning attitude they had earlier and encouraged them to be mentally tougher, Coach Lea Henry explained about career win No I think we were focused and defended well most of the game. We held them to that 30% shooting with better effort than our last couple games. Danyiell (McKeller) had another great game, especially with 19 in the first half, Henry noted. She stepped out of some double-teams and we played through their box-and-one defense on her. She had five steals on defense and was her usual poised self. She leads by her example on both ends of the court. Georgia State gained the lead at 6-5 and never lost it the rest of the game, but could never shake the pesky Tigers. With McKeller hot early, GSU opened up a 10-point lead at with 9:23 in the first half. Four times the Panthers would gain an 11-point in the first-half, the last at with 5:27, but Towson crept back to at halftime. The second half was more trading baskets than either team going on momentum runs as the lead varied between six and nine points through the first 18 minutes of the second half. Every time Towson could close it to six points, GSU would quickly answer with a basket on the other end. Georgia State built the lead back up to 11 points with 1:33 left (59-48), but Towson would not quit after a three-point basket by Jaleesa Dryver and a three-point free throw sequence by Simona Petronyte after a foul shooting a trey closed the margin to with 48.8 seconds. But, GSU kept making free throws and sealed the win. (Ted Constant Convocation Center) In a game with 13 ties, host ODU made the big plays at the end to erase GSU leads and prevail in a CAA game. Tied at 54, ODU guard Shadasia Green made her only basket of the second half on a drive down the lane with 21 seconds left and then Danyiell McKeller missed a chance to tie with 10 seconds left as ODU improved to 5-1 in the CAA. Georgia State (11-6, 2-4) controlled the game and lead for much of the second half. ODU ( ) went from 16:55 to 8:30 before they got the lead back from GSU when Jessica Canady scored. The teams were tied at 52 with 2:25 after a McKeller steal and lay-up and stayed that way after multiple possessions until ODU s Jasmine Parker scored with 52.7 seconds to put ODU ahead. But with 34.4 seconds left, Georgia State s Angelique Burtts made a steal after missing a chance to tie on a lay-up she missed and made the lay-up after her steal. ODU came down for what appeared to be a last-possesion chance, but Shadasia Green quickly drove to the basket with 21 seconds left and had a chance for a 3-point play. However, she missed the free throw and it was still as GSU had time to set up for a potential game-tying basket or taking the lead with another trey. The Panthers worked the ball into the paint to McKeller, but her turnaround jumper bounced off the rim. GSU fouled Tia Lewis for a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 6.6 and after three bounces off the rim, the ball went through for a three-point lead. She made the second for the final cushion. McKeller scored 22 points to lead the offense, while Shay Rawls garnered 11 rebounds. The Panthers hurt their chances for a second straight win over ODU by making just 10-of-18 free throws and shooting just 29 percent in the second half and 33.9 for the game. The teams were tied at the half, 32-32, as GSU came out in the second-half and established a four-point lead at with 13:05 to play. The Panthers had multiple three-point leads, but could never pull away after missing shots. I felt we kind of controlled the tempo most of the game, but we just didn t get the shots to go in most of the night, Coach Lea Henry said. CAA road wins are tough to get, especially one at ODU, and if we had made some more free throws or shots at the key times, we could have done that. The Panthers played their first game without starting guard Jylisa Williams, who had been dismissed from the team on Wednesday, and are continuing on without starting center, Chan Harris, who broke a bone in her foot in mid-december. (Georgia State Sports Arena) The nation s leading scorer and three-point shooter, Dawn Evans, put on a second-half scoring show to finish with 30 points and 9-of-14 three-point baskets in leading James Madison to a decision over Georgia State. Host Georgia State (11-7, 2-5) was holding a slim halft ime advantage over James Madison (15-3, 5-2) with Evans having just nine points on 3-of-9 shooting. But, Evans knocked down three three-pointers in the first two minutes of the second half in which she scored 21 points with six treys. Evans 30-point game was the 14th of her career as she hit 10-of-19 shots overall today. After Evans helped give JMU a lead five minutes into the half, the Panthers clawed back to with 11:54 on the clock. However, Evans quickly hit a trey, a driving floater down the lane and another trey at 9:40 to put JMU back up When State answered back to close within five again at at 1:18, the visiting Dukes made the free throws down the stretch to earn the win. The Panthers were led by Danyiell McKeller s 18 points, while Shay Rawls added 12 rebounds and 10 points for her double-double game. Guard Brittany Graham, the CAA s best three-point shooter at 45.8 percent, hit four of her six threepointers today for 12 more points. James Madison, who hit 12-of-21 outside the arc (57%), also got 16 points from Sarah Williams to support Evans. Evans performance of nine treys was a school record and one shy of the CAA record. The Dukes 12 three-pointers tied their school record. The only other player known to have made nine treys in the GSU Sports Arena is Panthers former star Kevin Morris with his nine-trey game. In the first half, JMU went on a 10-0 run to open a lead at 7:50 and led with 6:44 when the momentum shifted to Georgia State. The host Panthers went on their 11-0 run and turned deficit into a lead with 2:45 left in the first half and took the lead into the locker. This win gives JMU the series sweep after posting a win in Harrisonburg 17 days ago. The rough game saw leading scorer McKeller have two head injuries in the first half and leave the game at 5:40 for the rest of the half. The team doctor evaluated her condition at halftime and allowed her to return in the second half. We played hard and with itensity today, but we gave them too many easy looks, Coach Lea Henry said postgame. We were not aggressive like we have been in defending the outside shot today and am disappointed in that. James Madison is the highest-ranked RPI team in our league and we have got to learn to step up a little more to win these kind of games, Henry added. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Georgia State head coach Lea Henry recorded her 300th career victory as the Panthers earned a win over George Mason in a Colonial Athletic Association game. Georgia State (12-7, 3-5) also set their CAA lowest defensive yield with the 36 points allowed, the sixth lowest in school history. It is the seventh time this year the CAA s top defensive team has held an opponent to 50 points or fewer. The Panthers held Mason to 28.3% shooting and 0-for-12 outside the three-point arc. The Panthers have now won 50 straight games when holding an opponent to 50 points or fewer, including the 7-0 this season. The Panthers got 21 points from Danyiell McKeller and a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds from junior forward Angelique Burtts. Point guard Crystal Johnson, the CAA s leader in assists, added nine more in this win. George Mason (8-11, 1-7) was led by Brittany Eley s 11 points and Rahneeka Saunders 10 points. The 36 points was their season low after 41 vs. Virginia Tech and 44 to CAA foe Delaware. The Patriots lost leading scorer Brittany Poindexter with an injury early in the game and she never returned. Henry, whose first head coaching win was as interim coach at the University of Florida on Feb. 14, 1990, later served as head coach at Mercer before coming to Georgia State in Henry, who was an Olympic gold-medal winning player and All-SEC guard at Tennessee, is in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Vols Hall of Fame. This was her 242nd win at Georgia State. Yes, it feels special to get a road CAA win and a milestone win, Coach Henry said postgame. You remember these things and seeing the players grinning over at me during the end of the game and being aware of something like this makes a coach feel good. We came in thinking about the importance of our defensive effort and the veterans understand how to play team defense, Henry noted. We ve had tough luck losing two key players for the season and to keep pulling together and finding ways to win is important to reinforce a winning attitude. The visiting Panthers pulled from a 6-6 early tie with an 8-0 run sparked by McKeller and never let host Mason get the lead again. Georgia State held a halftime lead. A quick 10-4 run to start the second half gave Georgia State a lead at the midpoint of the second half. Mason could get no close than nine points with a final run at with just 1:32 left. Georgia State s Danyiell McKeller, who averages 19.5 a game, shot jut 3-of-13 for seven points this afternoon to score just seven points. The leading scorer was Shay Rawls with 10 points to go with her eight rebounds. VCU s Kita Waller followed her 35-point game of Thursday with a 28-point game today, hitting 8-of-12 field goals, including 4-of-7 three-point baskets, as well as 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Courtney Lane added 11 points and seven rebounds. Waller hit 17 of her 28 points in the second half. VCU got a big boost by making 15-of-18 free throws (83.3%) today. First, VCU is a good, strong, physical first-place team, Coach Lea Henry, who picked up her 300th win Thursday said. But, we had looks today and just didn t make enough shots. VCU makes it difficult for you, but we didn t execute as well as we could have. There is a lot of contact, a lot of pushing and shoving away from the ball and you have to respond. This was a tough trip with the five-hour bus ride in the snow yesterday, but that s part of the five-day trips we take in the CAA. Now, we get to come home for a pair of games and need to bounce back with more wins. A 13-inch snowfall blanketed Richmond on Saturday. The 39 points scored was a season-low for the Panthers as was McKeller s personal seven-point season low...the Panthers are 4-5 this year on the road, but just 1-4 on the road in the CAA (VCU, ODU, Madison and Hofstra)...The Panthers held VCU s D Andra Moss, averaging 18 points a game, to just six points this afternoon. William and Mary had re-gained the lead at with 3:21 on a pair of free throws by Jaclyn McKenna. But, Georgia State senior guard Brittany Graham had the answer for Georgia State with a three from deep in the corner to give the host Panthers a advantage with 3:21 to play in a shot that proved to be the difference. Crystal Johnson made a final free throw on the front end of a one-and-one with 31.5 seconds left. William and Mary, who had gotten 7 three-point baskets from Janine Aldridge, tried to get her one last look with screens and picks, but Aldridge ended up traveling with 5.5 seconds left before she could get off a shot. With 4.5 seconds left, Johnson missed the front end of this one-and-one and the visiting Tribe got the rebound and got off desperation 25-footer from Taysha Pye that banged off the backboard at the buzzer. Crystal Johnson exemplified what we wanted to show today, toughness and focus, said Coach Lea Henry. We needed to be aggressive and make things happen. It was good to see we were resilient enough to bounce back from the tough loss on Thursday and get this win today. This was Georgia State s first-ever win over William and Mary in regular season, making the series now at 7-2, including the win in a conference tournament. As the teams traded early scoring runs to start the game, William and Mary had gained the lead on Alridge s second trey at with 12:20 in the first half. Angelique Burtts added 10 more points to give the Panthers four players in double digits. Crystal Johnson had a solid game with seven sassists, six rebounds and a pair of steals. UD s six-foot-five star Elena Delle Donne hit 15-of-22, including four treys, for 35 points as Delaware improved to 16-8 and 8-5 in the CAA. It was a great play after our final timeout, but it just didn t drop today, Coach Lea Henry said. Crystal Johnson penetrated, made a good decision and a good pass, but it didn t drop for Shay (Rawls). And, Shay had played so well today and all her previous good plays today had us in position for that final play. Delaware had to shoot 61.9% in the second half to hold off the challenging Panthers and shot 53.8% for the game. The aggressive Panthers got off 71 shots to 52 for Delaware and had a rebound advantage over the taller Blue Hens. State had 20 offensive rebounds. The Panthers added nine steals and forced 16 UD turnovers to keep the pressure on. Georgia State, who led several time in the first half, but trailed by four at the halftime break, made several runs in the second half. When McKeller s jumper made it 51-48, Lauren Carra nailed a three to open it back up. Later, McKeller followed up a miss and it was with 8:57 to play. But, UD s Delle Donne responded with a three from the top of the key to push it back up to five. State got a trey from Haltiwanger with 49.3 in the game, it was But, with everyone in the building and all of Georgia States defenders knowing Delle Donne was going to get the ball, the six-foot-five freshman went baseline and lofted a soft jumper over three outstretched GSU defenders to make it Haltiwanger nailed another three and it was with just 12.5 seconds. The Panthers pressing defense forced a jump ball and gave them a chance for the win or tie at 9.7.
