Central and Montreat. The Camels have done it with defense, allowing opponents just 43.8 points per game this season, holding the last three foes to 33, 41 and 43 points. Campbell s defense has blocked 29 shots in four games (7.3), forced 66 turnovers (16.5) and made 47 steals (11.8). Campbell is averaging 44.8 rebounds per game this year. Georgia State and Campbell haven t met since GSU s last year in the A-SUN ( ). GSU had won the last 10 straight meetings in the series, with Campbell s last win being in the season in the conference tournament. Campbell Coach Wenda Watkins is familiar with the GSU Sports Arena, having been at CU for the past 31 seasons. Coach Watkins has 466 career wins at Campbell. A GLANCE AT APPALACHIAN STATE Appalachian State bowed at Virginia in the season opener, 80-48; then won on the road at Gardner-Webb, ASU won its home opener Monday over ETSU, Four Georgians on the App. State roster will be playing back in the home state. Freshman Katie Mallow played at Brookwood HS and grew up in the suburb of Snellville. Sophomore guard Canesha Edwards played just south of the Atlanta airport at Newnan HS. Senior Chakeitha TC Weldon grew up the closest to the GSU Sports Arena, playing in Atlanta at Benjamin Mays HS. Weldon joins Georgia State players Sade Means and Kendra Long as Mays alums. Junior Courtney Freeman starred at Madison Co. HS (Carlton), which is a little under 100 miles or two hours northeast of Atlanta and Athens. The Mountaineers finished 25-7 last year and lost in the WNIT at South Carolina after making it to the championship game of the SoCon tournament. In , ASU went and played in the WBI postseason tournament. RECOGNITION CAME TO PANTHERS In the CAA pre-season poll of the league s 12 coaches, redshirt senior Chan Harris was picked to the second team, making her one of the 10 best players in the league poll. Harris finished last year as an All-CAA third team pick after averaging 12.3 points, 8.9 rebounds, with 49 blocked shots. Sophomore Kendra Long was chosen as an All-CAA rookie last year after she knocked down 57 three-point baskets for the Panthers. Long finished with 7.6 points per game with 53 assists. She shot 37 percent outside the arc. Long had been voted CAA Rookie of the Week twice. Junior Cody Paulk was recognized as the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for A chemistry major and mathematics minor, she was a Dean s List student in the classrooms. On the court, she was second in the CAA in blocked shots with 56, while averaging 5.1 rebounds per game (better than 7 per game over the final half of the season). Redshirt junior Sadé Means begins her career at GSU after transferring last year. She had been an All-SoCon pick as a freshman at Appalachian State. FEELING REJECTED Georgia State finished No. 33 in the NCAA last season in blocked shots with 144 (4.6 per game). That Swat Team was led by 6-foot-3 Cody Paul (56) and 6-foot-2 Chan Harris (49) as they combined for 105 of those rejections. No other duo in school history had ever combined for 100 blocks before. Harris has swatted away 97 shots in her career (six this year) and junior Paulk has rejected 78 opponent attempts (one in opening game). Only four players in GSU history have reached 100 blocked shots, with this pair on pace to join that group in the season.

3 Coach SHARON BALDWIN-TENER Sharon Baldwin-Tener, named GSU s head coach in April of 2010, has known how to win as both a collegiate player and collegiate coach. In her first season, GSU continued to improve as the season went along, defeating the team in the CAA Championship that had beaten them by 24 points in the first CAA of her tenure.the team had the first three-game win streak in their short CAA history during a stretch in February, while also defeating two CAA teams who had been ranked in the Mid-Major Top 25 poll, She picked up her 200th career win as a head coach on Dec. 29 vs. Mississippi Valley State (91-65) and guided GSU to the 500th all-time win in school history on Jan. 9 in a win over Hofstra (84-70) In eight years, she turned the East Carolina women s basketball program around, winning 126 games, while earning postseason bids to the NCAA and WNIT tournaments. The Lady Pirates of ECU won the C-USA Tournament in Atlanta is a homecoming for Baldwin-Tener as she played her prep ball in Smyrna and her college ball at both Kennesaw State and the University of Georgia. She was an assistant coach at Georgia and a head coach at Life University in Marietta Those eight years at ECU followed her season as the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year honor in her only season at Mercer University in Macon. She first gained notice as the NAIA National Coach of the Year at Life University, where she began that program with a final No. 7 ranking in its first year and produced a team ranked No.1 in the national polls in her second season (2001). Her assistant coaching career was highlighted by being named the Naismith National Assistant Coach of the Year (1997) while she was in her seventh and final year at the University of Georgia under head coach Andy Landers. Baldwin-Tener enjoyed a successful playing career at both the high school and collegiate levels. At Wills High School (merged with Campbell High) in Smyrna, Ga., she averaged 21 points per contest as a senior and was named the 1985 Georgia Class 4A State Player-of-the-Year. Baldwin-Tener earned a bachelor s degree from Georgia in 1991 and completed her master s of education in 1997, also at Georgia. She and her husband, Matt, have two children: Luke (7, Feb. 4, 2004) and Samantha (6, Oct ). The magic number for a sure win appears to be scoring 70 points as GSU saw a streak of 19 consecutive wins when topping that 70-point plateau end on Monday night at Florida State. Last year, the highest scoring game was 91 points in a 26-point romp over Mississippi Valley State and the top game in the CAA play was 84 points in a 14-point win over Hofstra, then a top 25 team in the Mid-Major poll. ROSTER BREAKDOWNS Georgia State s roster includes players from seven different states, plus one international student. Six of the 13 players hail from the state of Georgia, while two come from North Carolina. GSU has one player each from Alabama, California, Indiana, South Carolina and Virginia. One player came to GSU from Australia. Of the six from Georgia, four are from metro Atlanta (Long, Mays HS; Means, Mays HS; Nolan, Duluth HS: Taylor, Douglas County HS). This year s roster includes just one senior (Harris). The roster has five junors (Anderson, Hargraves, Means, Paulk, Taylor). There are two sophomores (Long, V. Smith) and five freshmen (Beroth, Johnson, Nolan, M. Smith, Watson). CLASSROOM SUCCESS The Panthers had an excellent summer in the classrooms, posting a combined 3.35 GPA. Five members of the team had posted GPA s of 3.2 or better during last spring s semester that included basketball season. CLEANING THE GLASS Georgia State averaged 40.5 rebounds per game last year, fourth in the CAA. They had a +2.5 rebound advantage for the season to rank No. 87 in the NCAA final stats. The top two rebounders are back in Chan Harris and Cody Paulk, with veteran Tiffany Anderson also a key again. THREE-PEAT Freshman Kendra Long ranked No. 6 in the CAA last year with her 57 made three-point baskets. She made at least one trey in 25 of the games and had five makes in a game three different times. The 57 makes were fourth most in a season in school history, so Long can set her sights on the season-best 69 makes by Carmelita Layog in Even though the three-point line for the women was moved out the final inches to equal the men s three-point line, it shouldn t have much of an impact on the women s game. IT TAKES A THIEF Georgia State gets started with its pick-pockets and shot blocks. The Panthers averaged 10 steals a game last year (311 on the season) to rank No. 62 in the NCAA. The 144 blocks don t count as steals, but serve about the same purpose in getting the transition game going. It had 12 steals in the opener. The Panthers rely on everyone on the court getting steals, evident by the fact the seven players had 25 or more steals last year. GSU has 18 steals in two games this year (9.0), a good total considering it is against two top teams in Arizona and Florida State.

But GSU won just six of those 11 as they could not muster 57 points themselves on offense in those games. Georgia State s aggressive defense kept pressure on opponents and forced them to shoot 35.4% or less, usually a winning rate. Only 10 of the 30 opponents could shoot 40% against GSU last year. But, GSU could not find ways to win more, even with that solid defensive effort. Georgia State s defense had 10 or more steals in 18 of the 30 games. SCHEDULE DEMANDS PANTHERS TO BE READY Georgia State s schedule is filled with more than 50% of games against teams that won 19 or more games last year. Starting out of the blocks, GSU faced 21-win Arizona followed by a road trip to 24-win Florida State. Thanksgiving s Classic includes 25-win Appalachian State. The first home CAA game in December is against Hofstra, a team with power forward Shante Evans, who played on Team USA in the Pan American games this summer. December s home slate again includes crosstown rival Georgia Tech, a 24-win team that has been to the NCAA s the past four years. The CAA, usually in the top third of the 32 Division I conferences, will see games against 26-win James Madison, 24-win UNC Wilmington, 20-win Old Dominion, 20-win Delaware with All-American Elena Delle Donne, 19-win VCU, and 19-win Drexel. ROUND NUMBERS ROLLED OVER Georgia State passed some milestone games last year, playing in their 1,000th game all-time (a win) and picking up their 500th all-time win. The season opener will be game number 1,004 in school history with 506 wins in the victory column. Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener picked up her round number of 200 career wins last season and enters with 207 all-time victories. BENJAMIN MAYS HIGH SCHOOL REUNION Nobody official called a meeting, but three members of the Mays High School Raiders basketball team will be playing Saturday when ASU and GSU meet. GSU Panthers Sade Means (Redshirt junior) and Kendra Long (sophomore) will join Appalachian State s Chakeitha TC Weldon (Redshirt senior) as alumni members. All three of them took a winding path to get where they are. Means was recruited by Appalachian State, where she played the first two years with her twin sister, Charmene. She then transferred back to Atlanta and sat out last year as a transfer before becoming eligible this year. She was an All-SoCon Rookie team selection with ASU in Charmene also played at Mays HS and at Appalachian State, but it not on the roster at Georgia State while she is taking classes here. Long was recruited by Georgia Tech, but was granted a release from her NLI in the spring of 2010 and signed on with Georgia State. She was an All-CAA Rookie team selection last year with GSU. Weldon played three seasons at Tri-Cities before playing her final high school season at Mays. She signed with Kansas and played 10 games as a freshman in before injuring her knee. She transferred closer to home at Appalachian State. Mays High School is only 10 miles west of Atlanta from the door of the GSU Sports Arena.

5 SwattinG THEIR WAY UP THE SCHOOL ALL-TIME LIST Only four previous players in GSU women s basketball history had blocked 100 or more shots in their career. This season, two more could join that short list. Senior Chan Harris needs just three more to reach the 100-plateau, while junior Cody Paulk has blocked 78 shots, after making 77 rejections in her first two years as she has a chance to challenge the all-time record. Paulk and Harris had the third and fifth best single season totals for blocks last year when Paulk batted down 56 shots and Harris smacked back 49 attempts. So far in just 33 games at GSU, she has gone bang-bang with 63 three-point baskets, averaging almost two per game. She hit the target from three-point range five times in four games last year and went bang bang four times Monday against Florida State. Long was a 1,000-point scorer (reaching that figure on a three-point shot, naturally) in high school with a top game of 42 points. The sharpshooter was named MVP of the Georgia-Florida All-Star game. The four-team field will include 25- GSU tips with Campbell on Friday and Appalachian State on Saturday. BAHAMAS TRIP Georgia State s schedule includes a trip to Nassua and the Bahamas for the SunSplash Shootout. The Panthers will leave on Dec. 17 and play High Point from the Big South on Dec. 19 and then SIU Edwardsville from the OVC on Dec. 20. High Point just opened its season with VCU, defeating the Rams, 82-67, in the opening game. A DECEMBER HOMESTAND Georgia State will host three big games in December in the GSU Sports Arena. Their CAA opener comes on Sunday, Dec. 4, with Hofstra, a 19-win team last year led by All-CAA and USA Pan-American Games team member Shante Evans. On Wednesday, Dec. 14 Atlanta rival Kennesaw State will visit the Sports Arena for a city clash. Then, on Friday, Dec. 16 Atlanta neighbor Georgia Tech will come across town for the 35th meeting of this series. MEANS TWINS Sade and Charmene Means were both born on July 7, 1990, and have been together ever since. They both played ball at Mays High and throughout AAU teams, before going on to Appalachian State. The pair played at Appalachian State in and Sade had a pair of 17-point games while at ASU, both in her freshman year against Marshall and ETSU. She also had a a pair of 15-point games for the Mountaineers en route to her All-SoCon Rookie Team selection. Mom, Brenda, is able to attend the home games and be with her daughters.

26 AT GEORGIA STATE: CAREER HIGHS Beroth originally signed in high school with Coach Baldwin-Tener at East Carolina...Beroth left ECU in November of 2010 and enrolled at Georgia State for classes in January, That allowed her to work with the Panthers during the second half of the season....coming out of Class 4A Reagan High School in Pfafftown, N.C., Beroth was a Top 100 state of North Carolina prospect (No. 64 on that list)...she averaged double-double points and rebounds her final two seasons in high school in the Winston-Salem area...her strong inside game allowed her to produce multiple double-double games in scoring and rebounding for the Reagan Lady Raiders...She also manufactured a pair of triple-double games when she also had double-digit blocks to go with her scoring and rebounding...
