2 TOLEDO ROCKETS PANTHERS FAST START TIED TO DEFENSE Toledo won the 2011 WNIT national championship with a 29-win season. Last year, Toledo finished the regular season for a third straight year as the MAC West Division champs. The season followed that 29-8 WNIT title season and a 25-9 season in In four years as the head coach, Tricia Cullop entered this season with a record and earned her 100th win this season. Cullop was a collegiate star and team captain at Purdue. Assistant coach Alex Stewart was an All-ACC player at Georgia Tech ( ) and was the head coach at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. She is from Norcross. Toledo has 23,000 students. CHARLOTTE 49ers The solid program has made 10 consecutive postseason appearances, following last year s WNIT bid. The 49ers have two NCAA bids and eight WNIT berths in this 10-year run. The program is on solid ground for with all five starters returning and nine letterwinners. Coach Cara Consuegra was a star at Iowa and played in the WNBA. A trio of Charlotte freshman just finished their prep careers in Atlanta. Alexis Alexander played at Alpharetta HS, Tori Carter competed at Norcross HS and Kira Gordon lettered at Kennesaw Mountain HS. Charlotte has 26,000 students. MISSISSIPPI VALLEY ST. Located in Itta Bena, Miss, the Devilettes have become regulars in Georgia State tournaments. They were last year and return seven letterwinners. This year, MVSU has played Arkansas, Ole Miss, Kansas State, UAB and Dayton. This will be MVSU s seventh game against Georgia State since with GSU winning the six previous ones. Mississippi Valley is under firstyear head coach Elvis Robinson. A 2004 grad of MVSU, Robinson was on a SWAC championship team. He has been an assistant Georgia State will be looking to continue its successful start to the season as the Panthers will try for a eighth win in the tenth game of the young year. This season is only the seventh time of the Panthers 38-season history that they have started 7-2 or better. The Panthers also look to keep their perfect 6-0 home record intact. The up-tempo, highscoring Panthers have averaged 68 points on the season. GSU s defense has held six opponents under 50 this season and allow just 56.6 points a game. If one wants to know primarily why GSU is winning, just look at the national NCAA rankings of the 345 Division I teams on Monday, Dec. 16 (NCAA did not update on Dec. 23) and one will see the impact the Panthers aggressiveness is having: No. 7 in the NCAA in 3-point field goal defense (.214) No. 20 in the NCAA in all field goal defense (.326) No. 29 in the NCAA in blocked shots per game (5.4) No. 52 in the NCAA in rebound margin (+7.0) No. 104 in the NCAA in steals per game (10.6)) The Panthers are shooting offensively at a 42.6 percent rate, No. 53 in the NCAA, while scoring the 68 points a game to sit No. 82 in the NCAA. In the CAA, GSU is No. 1 rebounding average (45.0), rebounding advantage (+7.0), blocked shots (5.4) and 3-point FG Defense (21.4). The Panthers are No. 2 in the league in field goal percentage (42.6%), scoring (67.6) and FG defense (32.6). GSU is No. 5 in steals (10.6) and points allowed (56.6). Individually, center Cody Paulk leads the CAA in blocked shots (2.8 per game), while sitting at No. 2 in FG pct. (58.7%)No. 4 in the CAA in rebounding (8.6). Point guard Ashley Watson s 3.2 assists make her No. 6 in the CAA.2.3). Kendra Long is No. 5 in the NCAA in steals. (Kayla Nolan leads the team in scoring (11.2). RPI Number FOR HOLIDAY & HOOPS FIELD Georgia State lost earlier this season to No. 30 RPI-ranked Florida for the toughest opponent played this season so far. In the Holiday & Hoops Tournament, the field has teams ranked No. 37 (Toledo), No. 70 (Charlotte) and No. 207 (MVSU). Georgia State had dropped to No MVSU had the No. 8 toughest NCAA overall strength of schedule. The A-10 (Charlotte) was ranked No. 8, the CAA (GSU) was No. 14, the MAC (Toledo) was No. 16 and the SWAC (MVSU) was No. 31 in the conference rankings. The combined record of the four teams in this tournament is BACK WHERE THEY STARTED AT 0-0 Georgia State has now played 1,042 games since its inaugural game in the season. Now, in its 38th year of women s basketball, Georgia State is back even at 521 all-time wins and 521 all-time losses. DEFENSE MEANS WINS Georgia State s seven wins have all been started by the defense as evidenced by the points allowed (all seven have been held under 60 points, six under 50 points). And, Georgia State keeps the score low while playing an up-tempo fast-paced game and not a slow-down keep the score low game with ball control offense. 42 Kennesaw State 45 Western Carolina 47 Morehead State 48 Georgia Southern 50 UCF 50 Jacksonville State 58 Florida A&M

3 Coach SHARON BALDWIN-TENER Sharon Baldwin-Tener, named GSU s head coach in April of 2010, has known how to win as both a collegiate player and collegiate coach. Now in her third season at GSU, the recruiting has shown some pieces are in place for a solid future. She picked up her 200th career win as a head coach on Dec. 29, 2010 vs. Mississippi Valley State (91-65) and guided GSU to the 500th all-time win in school history on Jan. 9, 2011 in a win over Hofstra (84-70) In eight years, she turned the East Carolina women s basketball program around, winning 126 games, while earning postseason bids to the NCAA and WNIT tournaments. The Lady Pirates of ECU won the C-USA Tournament in Atlanta is a homecoming for Baldwin-Tener as she played her prep ball in Smyrna and her college ball at both Kennesaw State and the University of Georgia. She was an assistant coach at Georgia and a head coach at Life University in Marietta Those eight years at ECU followed her season as the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year honor in her only season at Mercer University in Macon. She first gained notice as the NAIA National Coach of the Year at Life University, where she began that program with a final No. 7 ranking in its first year and produced a team ranked No. 1 in the national polls in her second season (2001). Her assistant coaching career was highlighted by being named the Naismith National Assistant Coach of the Year (1997) while she was in her seventh and final year at the University of Georgia under head coach Andy Landers. Baldwin-Tener enjoyed a successful playing career at both the high school and collegiate levels. At Wills High School (merged with Campbell High) in Smyrna, Ga., she averaged 21 points per contest as a senior and was named the 1985 Georgia Class 4A State Player-of-the-Year. Baldwin-Tener earned a bachelor s degree from Georgia in 1991 and completed her master s of education in 1997, also at Georgia. She and her husband, Matt, have two children: Luke (8, Feb. 4, 2004) and Samantha (7, Oct. 28, 2005). With 159 she needs 7 to tie the school mark that has stood for 16 years. With 3 blocks, she moves into the Top 10 in CAA all-time history. She is the only GSU player to have two 50-plus block seasons and will be looking for make that three in a row as well. The Alabama native will be counted on to pick up where she left off down the stretch last season when she averaged 12.7 points per game and 5.8 rebounds over the final nine games of the season. Paulk had personal-best scoring games of 23 and 21 points, shooting better than 50% in six of those nine games. She is a Capital One CoSIDA Acaemica All-District honoree as a chemistry major and math minor. Long FROM LONG RANGE Junior Kendra Long has a great name for being an outstanding three-point shooter. In her first two years at GSU, she has become the only player in school history with two 50 or more threepoint baskets made seasons. Her 124 made has already moved her into fourth place on the school s all-time list. The Atlanta native needs 34 more to tie the existing school career mark set just five years ago.
