The Sun Belt Conference opener was a successful start as host Georgia State defeated Troy, 85-77, on New Year s Day in Atlanta as all five starters scored in double figures. Host South Alabama shocked the Sun Belt in its New Year s Day opener by upsetting the pre-season favorite, Western Kentucky, 74-65, at the Mitchell Center as four Jaguars scored in double digits. South Alabama shot 75% outside the arc with 9-of-12 3-point baskets in the win over Western Kentucky, but that is what the Jaguars do best. USA leads the SBC with s per game (78 in 11 games) and leads with a 37.3% rate outside the arc. Sophomore Rachel Cumbo leads the league with 53.1% outside the 3-point line (17-of-32), just ahead of GSU sophomore Gaby Moss with 47.4% (18-of-38). USA senior Meghan Dunn nails 40% outside the arc with 24-of-60. GSU s Kendra Long has 186 career 3-pointers. USA s 74 points in Wednesday s win over Western Kentucky was a gamehigh for the season. The Jaguars average 59.7 points on the season. Georgia State s 85 points in its Wednesday win marked a fourth game with 80 or more points as the Panthers average 68.2 on the year with their up-tempo, transistion-style game. Georgia State continues to lead the Sun Belt in free throw shooting (71.0%) on the year (176-of-248) and made 6-6 in the final 30 seconds to ice the win over Troy. But, the Sun Belt teams did schedule one another in and again in before Georgia State left the league after five years QUICK NOTES Balanced Georgia State has six players averaging 7.3 or more points a game en route to its 68.2 points per game. Georgia State LEADS the Sun Belt in free throw percentage this year, making 71.0% (176-of-248). Kendra Long leads the team with 86.4% on 38-of-44 with 17 consecutive made. Point guard Alisha Andrews had 10 assists at Western Carolina and her 63 (4.9 per game) are No. 2 in the Sun Belt this year. Freshman Haley Gerrin is No. 2 in the Sun Belt in field goal percentage (.553). Senior Kendra Long is everywhere in the Sun Belt statistics. She is No. 1 in assist-turnover rate (2.0 on 40 assists, 20 turnovers), No. 4 in steals (2.1), No. 4 in free throws (86.4%), No. 8 in 3-pointers made (1.7, 21), No. 9 in scoring (13.3) and No. 10 in assists (3.1). The 21 steals in the win over Belmont tied for fourth-most in a game and are the most since 1995 (23 vs. Kennesaw State). GSU is No. 4 in the Sun Belt in steals per game (9.0). The 10 steals vs. Troy marked a fourth game this year with 10 or more steals. GSU had a pair score 20 or more points in a game (Long 23, Andrews 22) for the first time since 2009 (Danyiell McKeller and Chan Harris, 22 each). Haley Gerrin became the fourth player this season to score 20 or more points in a game. Kayla Nolan had 25 at SFA, Kendra Long had 23 vs. Belmont and 22 vs. Georgia, Alisha Andrews had 22 vs. Belmont and Gerrin added her 23 points in the win over Jacksonville State. GSU made 11 3-point baskets in the opener at UT Martin, added 10 more in the win over Belmont and have 69 on the year (5.3 per game avg.). The Panthers like to play at a fast pace. They ve scored 87 (Belmont), 85 (Troy), 81 (San Jose State), 80 (UT Martin) and 77 (UCF) through the first 13 games. The Panthers have won when the defense plays well: at Kennesaw State, at Kent State, vs. Jacksonville State and actually held Troy to eight below its season average in the Sun Belt win. THE South ALABAMA SERIES Georgia State and South Alabama have rarely met in women s basketball. The last game was 17 years ago on Dec. 20, 1996 in Atlanta when Georgia State posted a win. None of the current players on either roster had even started elementary school in 1996, so that s how far back it goes. Georgia State made one visit to Mobile back on Dec. 7, 1987, 26 years ago and lost That Georgia State team gave up 100 or more points in three of its first four games of that 11-win season (110 at Auburn and 101 to Middle Tennessee). The third meeting in this series was at a neutral site in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Feb. 5, 1981 when Georgia State prevailed, So, GSU leads 2-1 all-time, but it s been a long time and rare times when these two school have met in women s basketball. But now they are Sun Belt rivals and will meet twice a year. South Alabama will travel to Atlanta on Wednesday, Jan. 29 for the re-match.

3 ThE LEAD STORY Georgia State is finding this year no lead is ever safe, regardless of the team. The Panthers this season have gained leads of 14, 13, 13, 12 and 7 points, but couldn t handle those advantages and gave all those leads away, resulting in four losses. Even against No. 22 Georgia, GSU also led by 7 with 12 minutes to go after leading by four points at hafltime (37-33), losing a fifth game. The Panthers then found the reverse coming true in a pair of wins. On Nov. 27 against Belmont, Georgia State managed a school-record 23-point second-half rally to shock Belmont, On Nov. 29 against Jacksonville State, GSU had a 7-point second-half lead, only to give it away to JSU and see the Gamecocks open a 7-point lead. GSU rallied at the end to tie the game with 1:23 left and convert it into another home win. On Dec. 3 at Kennesaw State, GSU led by nine points twice in the second half, but gave it all back for a tie with 8:54 left to play. GSU built it back to eight points with 6:30, but it was back down to four points with 43 seconds and GSU had to make one-and-one free throws to ice the win. Against Kent, GSU had a 6-point lead with 7:40, but gave it away and had to win on a twopoint buzzer beater. GSU and SJSU traded the lead seven times Wednesday evening. Georgia State may be the only team in the country this year to fully lead a game for all 39 minutes and then lose in the final minute, while also trailing in another game for all 39 minutes and pulling out the win in the final minute. GSU s Sun Belt opener was typical as GSU twice had 13-point leads in the second half and gave away 10-point leads in the final five minutes of both halves. GSU led with 5:20 and saw Troy tie the game at 73 and 75 But, GSU finished the game on a 10-2 run to claim the win. ON THE ROAD AGAIN Georgia State finally got a home game for the first time in a month on New Year s Day vs. Troy, after not having been home since Dec. 1.. But, Georgia State promptly goes back on the road to continue Sun Belt Conference play with three straight road games. That will then add up to 5 home games and 11 away from home, which could help explain some of the won-lost record. GSU will go to South Alabama on Jan. 4, Western Kentucky on Jan. 8 and Arkansas State on Jan. 14. It will be 17 more days before GSU plays at home on Jan. 18 vs. UALR. Georgia State had back-to-back home games in its Thanksgiving tournament on Friday and Sunday. They won t have that back-to-back again until Jan. 29 and Feb. 1 with South Alabama and UT Arlington. NEXT ONE UP Georgia State used nine different starters in the first 10 games. Currently, GSU just got two starters with injuries back: junior 6-foot-4 center Brittany Logan and junior guard Ashley Watson. Starter Hayley Gerrin, subbing for Logan, was injured at Kent on Dec. 8 in the first half and couldn t return. All three played some on the California trip, but Waston missed the second game. Neither Logan nor Watson has re-joined the starting line-up yet, though. As a result, the Panthers are finding several different combinations and highscorers from game-to-game and the players have the next one up mentality to step in when someone else can t go. GSU has had four different players already score 20 or more points in a game this season: Kayla Nolan (25 vs. Stephen F. Austin), Kendra Long (23 vs. Belmont and 22 vs. Georgia), Alisha Andrews (22 vs. Belmont) and then Hayley Gerrin (23 vs. Jacksonville State). Gaby Moss just missed with a 16-point game at UT-Martin, hitting 4-of-4 from 3-point range and had 16 points in the Sun Belt opening win. Logan has the only double-double game of the season as she took her turn to lead with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the home opener vs. UCF. Maryam Dogo came off the bench to score 13 points in 13 minutes at Stephen F. Austin. Morgan Jackson came off the bench to score 12 points in 19 minutes against UCF. Nolan came off the bench to score 16 points in the win at Kent State and had 16 vs. SJSU. Miranda Smith has stepped in with a pair of 8-point games vs. N.C. A&T and Belmont. Ashanti Groover came off the bench with 8 points and 5 rebounds in 13 minutes vs. Belmont. The depth became a key as well when the games come in bunches. GSU finished a stretch of four games in seven days on Dec. 3. Earlier, they had played three games in five days in the preseason WNIT on the road before coming home for the opener. 7 Coach SHARON BALDWIN-TENER Sharon Baldwin-Tener, named GSU s head coach in April of 2010, has known how to win as both a collegiate player and collegiate coach. In her fourth season at GSU, the recruiting has shown some pieces are in place for a solid future. She picked up her 200th career win as a head coach on Dec. 29, 2010 vs. Mississippi Valley State (91-65) and guided GSU to the 500th all-time win in school history on Jan. 9, 2011 in a win over Hofstra (84-70) In eight years, she turned the East Carolina women s basketball program around, winning 126 games, while earning postseason bids to the NCAA and WNIT tournaments. The Lady Pirates of ECU won the C-USA Tournament in Atlanta is a homecoming for Baldwin-Tener as she played her prep ball in Smyrna and her college ball at both Kennesaw State and the University of Georgia. She was an assistant coach at Georgia and a head coach at Life University in Marietta Those eight years at ECU followed her season as the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year honor in her only season at Mercer University in Macon. She first gained notice as the NAIA National Coach of the Year at Life University, where she began that program with a final No. 7 ranking in its first year and produced a team ranked No. 1 in the national polls in her second season (2001). Her assistant coaching career was highlighted by being named the Naismith National Assistant Coach of the Year (1997) while she was in her seventh and final year at the University of Georgia under head coach Andy Landers. Baldwin-Tener enjoyed a successful playing career at both the high school and collegiate levels. At Wills High School (merged with Campbell High) in Smyrna, Ga., she averaged 21 points per contest as a senior and was named the 1985 Georgia Class 4A State Player-of-the-Year. In her first three years at GSU, she became the only player in school history with three 50 or more 3-point baskets-made seasons. Her point baskets made has already moved her into first place on the school s all-time list. Long made six treys in a game vs. Towson on Feb. 14, 2013 and has made five 3-point shots in a game five times, so she is obviously a marked target for opposing defenses. She has 54 double-figure scoring games. Long has scored 1,040 points to become the 21st 1,000-point scorer in GSU history. She has played in 103 games, needing 18 more games to tie the all-time school record. Long has started 86 games, meaning she should become the seventh player in school history to start 100 games. The was the fifth time in school history that GSU had made 10 3-point baskets in a game. The Panthers made 11-of-24 treys with Moss and Andrews each knocking down four 3-pointers. The best 3-point percentage for a game in was.529 vs. Towson on 9-of-17 as Kendra Long led the way with her 6-of-10. With the group of 3-point shooters on this year s team, a steady watch on this record will be kept. Against Belmont, GSU challenged that with 10-of-21 beyond the arc.

8 WATSON SETS FT RECORD Sophomore Ashley Watson finished by making 19 straight free throws over eight games to establish a new single-season record for best free throw percentage of.875. Watson had 12 games during the season where she was 100% when she shot two or more free throws. She made 8-of-9 (.889) and 12-of-14 (.857) for most made in a game. Watson has made 114-of-135 shots for a three-year mark of.844, that leads the career shooting percentage list. Marica Maddox made 224-of-272 (.824) over her four years to hold the current career mark. Kelcey Roegiers- Jensen is second with a.785 mark on 266-of-339. SMALL IN SIZE, LARGE IN RESULTS Junior point guard Alisha Andrews may be only 4-foot-11 in size, but she is one of the largest producers on the basketball court. After sitting her transfer year from UNCW, Andrews plays her first season at Georgia State. Andrews becomes the smallest player in the Sun Belt with South Alabama s Brittany Webb at 5-foot-2 and Texas State s Ayriel Anderson at 5-foot-3 on the roster. Research continues from NCAA rosters, but Andrews is shorter than any players in these 16 conferences: ACC, A-Sun, Big Sky, Big Ten, Big 12, CAA, C-USA, MVC, Moutain West. OVC, Pac-12, Patriot, SEC, SoCon, Sun Belt or West Coast conferences. Think she s a defensive liability? Evidently not as she was voted to the CAA All-Defensive Team her two years at UNCW. Her pesky-quick hands force team turnovers galore and she has 206 career steals. Think she can t score? In her third year of college basketball, she scored 846 points (10.8). Naturally, she finds the open 3-pointer and knocks them down with 148 in her career. A driver and penetrator, she s made 380 assists in drawing the post players to her and she finds the open teammate. Or, the post players foul her and she knocks down 74% of her 140 free throws. Think she isn t tough? Her preference is to play all 40 minutes, but she has averaged 35 minutes a game in her career when the coach makes her take a quick break. She s never missed a game or a start. She leads GSU in minutes played this year. Think you can t win with her running the show? She led UNCW to 24- and 20-win seasons in a league in the top 12 RPI ratings both years, while earning WNIT postseason bids. She led her high school team to 58 straight wins, winning one state title and bowing in the second.

12 Georgia State Begins Sun Belt Season After more than a year s worth of anticipation, the wait was finally over. On July 1, 2012, the Georgia State Athletic Department officially became a member of the Sun Belt Conference and on July 1, 2013, all sports became eligible for championships in 14 league-sponsored sports. Basketball joins the mix in November and will compete in the Sun Belt tournament in March in New Orleans. The men s team was a charter member in 1976; the women make their debut in We look forward to playing a leadership role in the Sun Belt Conference and our teams competing for Sun Belt titles and postseason berths, Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick said. It really is a tremendous day in Georgia State sports history. GSU s move onto a national stage in all sports officially began on April 9, At a press conference inside the Georgia Dome, Sun Belt Conference officials joined Georgia State President Mark Becker and Levick at the public announcement of the Panthers impending conference move. A feasibility study begun in the fall of 2011 concluded the Panthers were well positioned to make the jump to the FBS level and that the Sun Belt would be an ideal fit. The rest has been history. The move now allows GSU to build on regional rivalries with several schools within driving distance, while also showcasing its talented teams to the country. It is a return home of sorts for Georgia State, which was a founding member of the Sun Belt Conference in At that time, the league consisted of six universities playing across four men s sports basketball, soccer, tennis and golf. Women s sports did not compete in the Sun Belt or NCAA at that time. Today, the Sun Belt Conference sponsors 18 sports, including 14 that the Panthers will vie for conference titles. On the men s side, GSU will compete in baseball, basketball, football, golf and tennis, while women s sports include basketball, golf, cross country, soccer, softball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and court volleyball. GSU has also announced plans to add women s swimming and diving, another Sun Belt-sponsored sport. The Panthers already own two Sun Belt Conference titles in the past year. Ten individual sports were accepted into the league for , giving the women s cross country and men s tennis teams a leg up on collecting hardware. Each squad won the Sun Belt title and helped Georgia State finish ahead of two SBC schools in the Vic Bubas Cup standings (an all sports trophy) despite competing in only half of the league s sports. Sun Belt TOURNAMENT IN NEW ORLEANS The Sun Belt Tournament will be held at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans with both the women s and men s teams competing the same week of March Photo courtesy Frank Aymami
