The game is part of a doubleheader day as the tournamentbound GSU volleyball team plays its final home game at 1 p.m. that day. Georgia State won five of its final nine games before bowing out to the No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament in head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener s first year. In year two with the new coach, GSU returns six lettermen and three transfers from last year, while adding four freshmen to the mix. Four of the returnees all started for more than half the season and a fifth player started nine games in the second half of the season, giving the team a huge head start over last year at this time. The Panthers showed progress during the season after losing its first CAA game by 24 points on the road and then coming back to beat that team later in the regular season at home and again in the opening round of the tournament. GSU also knocked off a pair of CAA foes when they were ranked in the Top 25 midmajor polls in The team progressed a long, long way over the course of the year and finished by playing with more confidence and aggressiveness, the veteran head coach summarized. I saw that the team always wanted to improve and showed up at every practice wanting to get better, work, learn and win. We have added more talent and have more experience from the start and will set our sights even higher. The team chemistry is much better, the returners all know the priorities and what to expect, so we will be way ahead of where we were when we start the season Baldwin- Tener said. Arizona opens the season Friday night at Georgia Southern before heading to Atlanta. Arizona was last year in finishing fourth in the conference and earning a WNIT bid. They return five letterwinners, led by All-Pac 12 Davellyn Whyte (15.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg) and the Pac 10 assist leader, Shanita Arnold (4.9 pg). Head Coach Niya Butts, in her fourth year, hails from Americus, Ga., and Americus High School, before going on to play on two national champions at Tennessee. Butts was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in Arizona assistant coach Brandy Manning graduated from Clark Atlanta in 2002 Ȧrizona sophomore guard Candice Warthen was born in Augusta and grew up in Warrenton, where she played at Warren County High School. Warthen led the Class A small schools in scoring (28.5). Warrenton is about 100 miles out I-20 east from Atlanta. Forward Cheylene Harper is from Asheville, N.C., about 200 miles north of Atlanta. THE COACH FROM AMERICUS No, we re not talking NFL head coaches Dan Reeves or Chan Gailey, we re talking Arizona s head coach Niya Butts. Her #23 jersey was retired by Americus HS in August, 2010, to honor her 1,613 points and All-State accolades that led Pat Summitt to her doorstep. She averaged 13.7 points and 10.8 rebounds as a senior. Butts set the state record in track in the shot put. RECOGNITION CAME TO PANTHERS In the CAA pre-season poll of the league s 12 coaches, redshirt senior Chan Harris was picked to the second team, making her one of the 10 best players in the league poll. Harris finished last year as an All-CAA third team pick after averaging 12.3 points, 8.9 rebounds, with 49 blocked shots. Sophomore Kendra Long was chosen as an All-CAA rookie last year after she knocked down 57 three-point baskets for the Panthers. Long finished with 7.6 points per game with 53 assists. She shot 37 percent outside the arc. Long had been voted CAA Rookie of the Week twice. Junior Cody Paulk was recognized as the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for A chemistry major and mathematics minor, she was a Dean s List student in the classrooms. On the court, she was second in the CAA in blocked shots with 56, while averaging 5.1 rebounds per game (better than 7 per game over the final half of the season). Redshirt junior Sadé Means begins her career at GSU after transferring last year. She had been an All-SoCon pick as a freshman at Appalachian State. FEELING REJECTED Georgia State finished No. 33 in the NCAA last season in blocked shots with 144 (4.6 per game). That Swat Team was led by 6-foot-3 Cody Paul (56) and 6-foot-2 Chan Harris (49) as they combined for 105 of those rejections. No other duo in school history had ever combined for 100 blocks before. Harris has swatted away 91 shots in her career and Paul has rejected 77 opponent attempts in her first two seasons. Only four players in GSU history have reached 100 blocked shots, with this pair on pace to join that group in the season. IT TAKES A THIEF Georgia State gets started with its pick-pockets and shot blocks. The Panthers averaged 10 steals a game last year (311 on the season) to rank No. 62 in the NCAA. The 144 blocks don t count as steals, but serve about the same purpose in getting the transition game going. The Panthers rely on everyone on the court getting steals, evident by the fact the seven players had 25 or more steals last year.

3 Coach SHARON BALDWIN-TENER Sharon Baldwin-Tener, named GSU s head coach in April of 2010, has known how to win as both a collegiate player and collegiate coach. In her first season, GSU continued to improve as the season went along, defeating the team in the CAA Championship that had beaten them by 24 points in the first CAA of her tenure.the team had the first three-game win streak in their short CAA history during a stretch in February, while also defeating two CAA teams who had been ranked in the Mid-Major Top 25 poll, She picked up her 200th career win as a head coach on Dec. 29 vs. Mississippi Valley State (91-65) and guided GSU to the 500th all-time win in school history on Jan. 9 in a win over Hofstra (84-70) In eight years, she turned the East Carolina women s basketball program around, winning 126 games, while earning postseason bids to the NCAA and WNIT tournaments. The Lady Pirates of ECU won the C-USA Tournament in Atlanta is a homecoming for Baldwin-Tener as she played her prep ball in Smyrna and her college ball at both Kennesaw State and the University of Georgia. She was an assistant coach at Georgia and a head coach at Life University in Marietta Those eight years at ECU followed her season as the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year honor in her only season at Mercer University in Macon. She first gained notice as the NAIA National Coach of the Year at Life University, where she began that program with a final No. 7 ranking in its first year and produced a team ranked No.1 in the national polls in her second season (2001). Her assistant coaching career was highlighted by being named the Naismith National Assistant Coach of the Year (1997) while she was in her seventh and final year at the University of Georgia under head coach Andy Landers. Baldwin-Tener enjoyed a successful playing career at both the high school and collegiate levels. At Wills High School (merged with Campbell High) in Smyrna, Ga., she averaged 21 points per contest as a senior and was named the 1985 Georgia Class 4A State Player-of-the-Year. Baldwin-Tener earned a bachelor s degree from Georgia in 1991 and completed her master s of education in 1997, also at Georgia. She and her husband, Matt, have two children: Luke (7, Feb. 4, 2004) and Samantha (6, Oct ). The magic number for a sure win appears to be scoring 70 points as GSU is on a streak of 19 consecutive wins when topping that 70-point plateau. Last year, the highest scoring game was 91 points in a 26-point romp over Mississippi Valley State and the top game in the CAA play was 84 points in a 14-point win over Hofstra, then a top 25 team in the Mid-Major poll. ROSTER BREAKDOWNS Georgia State s roster includes players from seven different states, plus one international student. Six of the 13 players hail from the state of Georgia, while two come from North Carolina. GSU has one player each from Alabama, California, Indiana, South Carolina and Virginia. One player came to GSU from Australia. Of the six from Georgia, four are from metro Atlanta (Long, Mays HS; Means, Mays HS; Nolan, Duluth HS: Taylor, Douglas County HS). This year s roster includes just one senior (Harris). The roster has five junors (Anderson, Hargraves, Means, Paulk, Taylor). There are two sophomores (Long, V. Smith) and five freshmen (Beroth, Johnson, Nolan, M. Smith, Watson). CLASSROOM SUCCESS The Panthers had an excellent summer in the classrooms, posting a combined 3.35 GPA. Five members of the team had posted GPA s of 3.2 or better during last spring s semester that included basketball season. CLEANING THE GLASS Georgia State averaged 40.5 rebounds per game last year, fourth in the CAA. They had a +2.5 rebound advantage for the season to rank No. 87 in the NCAA final stats. The top two rebounders are back in Chan Harris and Cody Paulk, with veteran Tiffany Anderson also a key again. THREE-PEAT Freshman Kendra Long ranked No. 6 in the CAA last year with her 57 made three-point baskets. She made at least one trey in 25 of the games and had five makes in a game three different times. The 57 makes were fourth most in a season in school history, so Long can set her sights on the season-best 69 makes by Carmelita Layog in Even though the three-point line for the women was moved out the final inches to equal the men s three-point line, it shouldn t have much of an impact on the women s game. EXHIBITION WIN Georgia State defeated Young Harris College, 67-49, on Wednesday in their only live exhibition game. GSU had held a closed scrimmage/practice with Georgia Southern earlier in the preseason period. Sophomore guard Kendra Long s 19 points on 5-of-9 beyond the arc paced the offense. GSU held a rebounding advantage and shot 45.8% from the field for the game. Everyone played with 10 Panthers getting in the scorebook, nine grabbing a rebound and nine making a steal. The balance saw 10 players each log 15 minutes or more playing time as Coach rotated the line-up all game long.

But GSU won just six of those 11 as they could not muster 57 points themselves on offense in those games. Georgia State s aggressive defense kept pressure on opponents and forced them to shoot 35.4% or less, usually a winning rate. Only 10 of the 30 opponents could shoot 40% against GSU last year. But, GSU could not find ways to win more, even with that solid defensive effort. Georgia State s defense had 10 or more steals in 18 of the 30 games. SCHEDULE DEMANDS PANTHERS TO BE READY Georgia State s schedule is filled with more than 50% of games against teams that won 19 or more games last year. Starting out of the blocks, GSU faces 21-win Arizona followed by a road trip to 24-win Florida State. Thanksgiving s Classic includes 25-win Appalachian State. The first home CAA game in December is against Hofstra, a team with power forward Shante Evans, who played on Team USA in the Pan American games this summer. December s home slate again includes crosstown rival Georgia Tech, a 24-win team that has been to the NCAA s the past four years. The CAA, usually in the top third of the 32 Division I conferences, will see games against 26-win James Madison, 24-win UNC Wilmington, 20-win Old Dominion, 20-win Delaware with All-American Elena Delle Donne, 19-win VCU, and 19-win Drexel. ROUND NUMBERS ROLLED OVER Georgia State passed some milestone games last year, playing in their 1,000th game all-time (a win) and picking up their 500th all-time win. The season opener will be game number 1,004 in school history with 506 wins in the victory column. Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener picked up her round number of 200 career wins last season and enters with 207 all-time victories. The 5-foot-6 Watson averaged 12.2 points, 3.5 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals a game for Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose...Her final prep totals included 1,119 points, 313 assists and 226 steals. Watson shot 77 percent from the free throw line for her high school career...she was the San Jose Mercury News Junior of the Year and Sophomore of the Year. She was a first-team all-league pick and a three-time All-CCS pick as well as a three-time West Catholic League pick...her top scoring game was a 28-point game vs. St. Ignatius.
