2 GAME 30: CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS - March Thursday, March p.m. Upper Marlboro, Md - Show Place Arena RECORDS FOR GAME 1 Georgia State Panthers, 11-18, 6-12 H: 7-9, A: 4-9, N: 0-0 George Mason Patriots 13-16, 7-11 H: 10-5 A: 3-11 N: 0-0 ALL-TIME SERIES: Series tied, 4-4, Split this year HEAD COACH Sharon Baldwin-Tener (Georgia, 91) At GSU: Career: (12th year) GEORGIA STATE ON THE AIR Radio: WRAS-FM (88.5) Drew Hinesley: Play-by-Play Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen: Color Live statistics at GeorgiaStateSports.com PANTHERS PLAY FIRST GAME IN CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Georgia State will tip off the CAA Championships in the opening game on Thursday, March 10, when they tangle with the George Mason Patriots, the No. 8 seed, for the third time this season. GSU s defense leads the CAA in blocked shots (140, 4.8, No. 27 NCAA), is No. 3 in field goal percentage allowed (.366, No. 49 NCAA), No. 4 in steals (10.1, No. 61 NCAA) and No. 4 in rebounding margin (+2.8, No. 79 NCAA). Senior Angelique Burtts has hit double figures in 14 of the last 17 games and has 706 points in her three years of NCAA play. She averages 12.9 points (9th CAA), 6.1 rebounds, while leading the team with 52 steals. Junior Chan Harris has been GSU s team s leader, with 12.4 points (10th CAA) and 9.4 rebounds (3rd CAA, No. 48 NCAA), 10 double-double games, plus 49 blocked shots (1.8 No. 3 CAA, No. 63 NCAA). Freshman guard Kendra Long has made 54 three-point baskets at a 37% rate to rank No. 6 in the CAA in treys made and No. 6 in percentage. Sophomore center Cody Paulk has emerged recently and upped her total to 53 blocked shots (No. 2 CAA, No. 53 NCAA). The 6-foot-3 Alabama native has 7 or more rebounds in 10 of the last 11 games, while scoring in double figures in 5 of the last 8 games. Sophomore Jerlisa Taylor leads in assists with 63. Senior Traci Haltiwanger has hit double figures in 3 of the last 4 games, including a personal-best 17 points in Sunday s win at NU and 13 Wednesday. The Panthers storyline for this year can be told through the offense. There have been 12 times this year that the offense has scored 52 or fewer points and all 12 times the Panthers lost. There have been seven times this year that the Panthers have scored 67 or more points, and all seven times the Panthers won. GSU has won 19 consecutive games when scoring 70 or more points, including six this year, with a top game of 91 points, as well as 84 points in the win over Hofstra on Sun. Jan. 9, 76 vs. UNCW and 71 vs. Mason. FIRST SEASON FOR NEW COACH We have come a long, long way from the start of the season. We are playing with much more confidence and aggressiveness. This group doesn t quit. They bounce back from setbacks and keep trying to do all they can to get better for the next game. They come out now expecting to win and have learned it takes a full 40-minute effort. I have seen our two seniors (Angelique Burtts and Traci Haltiwanger) show more progress and leadership in the past month. They are being more assertive and helping the younger players. When we play well, we win the rebound battle in the game. To win, we have to make the hustle plays, get the steals, get the loose balls, get the offensive rebounds. In our wins, that is what we have done. The biggest surprise this season has been the improvement of sophomore Cody Paulk. She is making it harder for the other teams to score and disrupting them. She s looking to score more now on offense and is battling harder for rebounds. In tournament settings, you re often facing a team for the third time. You know what they are trying to do most often and they know what you are trying to do. So, you have to be ready to play hard and play smart. For the most part, we ve played good defense and given ourselves chances to win with that effort. We obviously haven t been as good as I d like every game, but our stats probably show how hard we play on defense.

6 GEORGIA STATE AND CAA STATISTICS CAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY A different team has won the CAA Tournament in each of the past three years. Seven teams earned postseason bids in In 2010, James Madison won the title on its home court. In 2009, Drexel claimed the championship after entering as the No. 1 seed from the regular season. In 2008, Old Dominion earned the championship as the No. 1 regular season seed. For Old Dominion in 2008, that marked a run of 17 consecutive years of winning the championship. Prior to ODU s run that started in 1992, Richmond had won a pair, James Madison had won four and East Carolina had won the first two CAA Championships ever played. The CAA had two teams earn NCAA bids in 2009 (Drexel and VCU). The CAA had three teams earn NCAA bids in 2007 (ODU, Delaware and James Madison). The tournament site moves around and this year it will be held at a new venue for the CAA: The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md., just outside Washington D.C. This will mark the first time the tournament has been held at a neutral site since 1998 when it was held at the Richmond Coliseum. Rice is making a late charge in C-USA with its 18 wins. CAA, RANKINGS AND RPI The CAA is ranked No. 11 in the current 2011 RPI rankings of the 32 leagues on Feb. 28 by Collegiate Basketball News and No. 10 in the Sagarin rankings. The CAA is in non-league games this year. Two of the top five scorers in the NCAA will compete in Upper Marlboro. Dawn Evans of James Madison is joined by Courtney Hurt of VCU inrankings at 23.6 and 23.4 ppg. Elena Delle Donne averages 25.0, but has played only 17 games, even with one game of zero points counting. Hurt leads the NCAA in rebounding at 12.6 and in most double-double games. Hofstra s Shante Evans is in the top 10 in rebounding at ODU s Jasmine Parker is in the top 10 in steals. Dawn Evans is top five in 3-point baskets. Kamile Nacickaite is top five in three-point percentage. Four (4) CAA teams are receiving votes in the Top 25 in the current Mid-Major poll among the 22 conferences considered in that category: James Madison is No. 8, ODU is No. 12, UNC Wilmington is No. 16. VCU is receiving votes in the national rankings. Six CAA teams are listed in the Top 100 in the Collegiate Basketball News rankings with James Madison the highest at No. 38 on March 7. ODU is at No. 63, UNCW at No. 81, VCU is at No. 91, Drexel at 92 and Delaware is at No. 98. Georgia State is No. 211 in the CBN rankings, 9th in the CAA. The Panthers strength of schedule is at No. 138, making it the 7th toughest slate among the CAA teams. The toughest season schedules belong to James Madison (73), ODU (93) and VCU (123). UNC Wilmington has faced the easiest strength of schedule (245), with Hofstra the next easiest at No GSU has beaten: GSU has lost to: UNC Wilmington (81), Georgia Tech (20), Hofstra (150), JMU twice (38), George Mason (195), ODU twice (63), Stetson (190), UNC Wilmington (81), Towson twice (225), Hampton (80), Northeastern (244), VCU twice (91), Alabama A&M (264), Drexel (92), Mississippi Valley State (272), Delaware (98), Jacksonville State (296), Rice (108), Bethune-Cookman (303) UAB (176), George Mason (195), Western Carolina (237), Northeastern (244), William & Mary (291) Nicholls State (303) That means GSU has not played any team ranked in the Bottom 40 of the 343 teams in the RPI rankings.

11 A LOOK AT MASON-GSU SERIES THIS YEAR The Panthers opened the CAA season on Jan. 3 in Fairfax, struggling with five losses in the previous seven non-conference games, and trying to find their identity under the new head coach. The Panthers tried a new line-up with Lanajia Ernest at point guard, Jerlisa Taylor at two-guard, Angelique Burtts on the wing, Letiecia Davenport at forward and Chan Harris at center. That didn t work as the Panthers commited their second-most turnovers of the season (28) and shot just 27.5% from the field in a frustrating loss. Mason started the game with a 15-2 run in the first seven minutes and GSU never really recovered. Shooting 25% in the first half, GSU was down at the break. To make matters worse, Angelique Burtts was injured early and would miss the next couple games. The one positive for GSU may have been a rebound advantage. Mason, not known for its three-point shooting, went 8-for-15 (53%) outside the arc in this game. The re-match in Atlanta on Feb. 10 saw GSU start this game stronger than in Fairfax with another different line-up, using Kendra Long at point guard and Burtts at two-guard. Leslie McElrath was the leading scorer and rebounder (19.9 and 7.7 averages) as she was later named to the A-Sun s 25th Anniversary all-time team. Point guard Marica Maddox was all-conference and guard Angelina Miller became a 1,000-point scorer. Sophomore Evita Rogers was another scoring weapon. The women s squad from 1981 was playing just the sixth season in school history when they posted an oustanding 28-5 final record. That team won the Region championship with three wins and earned a bid in the 24-team AIAW national tournament, the forerunner of the women s NCAA Tournament. The Panthers lost to Kay Yow s N.C. State team. This GSU team posted two regular season wins over Georgia Tech, as well as wins over Top 20-ranked Georgia, plus Florida State, Wake Forest, Georgia Southern, UAB, UCF and VCU. This team had a 17-game winning streak during the regular season. Terese Allen, whose jersey hangs from the rafters, led this squad in scoring with 23.4 points a game, while Sheryl Martin, whose jersey also hangs from the rafters, led in rebounding with 11.6 per game. Point guard Denise Lloyd led the team in assists with a new school record. Forward Sherry Stinchomb became a 1,000-point scorer.
