The game, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was moved back to Thursday as a DH before the men s game due to the snow and ice in the southeast. Surging Texas State, now in sole possession of second place, has won four in a row and five of its last six games in the Sun Belt. The Bobcats have topped UL Lafayette, UL Monroe, Western Kentucky and Troy since a Jan. 22 loss at UALR. The third-place Panthers have Georgia State had won five in a row to move into second place, but traded places with Texas State after Saturday s loss to first-place Arkansas State, This is the first time these two new Sun Belt schools will play in women s basketball. GSU returns the visit to San Marcos, Texas, on March 1. Both these teams prefer more of an up-tempo game as Texas State has topped 70 points in its last five games and 10 times this year. Georgia State has scored 70 or more nine times this season. Both these teams have depth and players often take turns leading in scoring and rebounding. But, both teams have a 1,000-point senior leader. Texas State senior center has scored 1,180 career points with 18 career double-double games. Georgia State senior guard Kendra Long has netted 1,156 career points with a school-record point baskets made. The Sun Belt takes the top eight of the 10 teams to the tournament March in New Orleans and the results indicate it will be anyone s to win. In the preseason poll of the league coaches, at the moment it looks like they might have misjudged with their voting. Arkansas State was picked third, with current second-place Georgia State and Texas State picked eighth and ninth, respectively. UALR, picked first, is currently 6-5, and WKU, picked second, is also 6-5. But, there s a long way to go in this race with eight more games. PROBABLE STARTERS (Note: Line-up changes often) Pos. But, the Sun Belt teams did schedule one another in and again in before Georgia State left the league after five years. BALANCE OF POWER Georgia State has had 12 players start a game this year. GSU has had 13 players log 125 or more minutes and the 14th player who hasn t logged 100 minutes has started three games and leads in blocks. The Panthers have six players all averaging 7.5 or more points a game en route to its 67.2 points per game. The Panthers have three players with 40 or more steals this year. GSU has three players with 24 or more 3-point baskets this year C Brittany Logan has three double-double games in the last five and double-figure rebounds in four of the last five. Haley Gerrin became the fourth player this season to score 20 or more points in a game. Kayla Nolan, Kendra Long and Alisha Andrews had already had at least one 20-point game. GSU had a pair of players score 20 or more points in the same game (Long 23, Andrews 22) for the first time since 2009 (Danyiell McKeller and Chan Harris, 22 each. GSU has four players shooting 75% or better FT this season QUICK NOTES Georgia State ranks 3rd in the Sun Belt in steals (9.1 per game season, 9.4 in Sun Belt games), as well as 3rd in 3-point baskets made (118, 5.4 pg). Kendra Long leads the team with 81.2% on 56-of-69 with a best streak of 19 consecutive made. The Panthers have nine games with 10 or more steals this year, including six of the last 10 games. Georgia State is 5-4 at home, plus five wins on the road. GSU has four home games left and four road games remaining. All home Saturday games are Dream Saturdays in a promotion with the WNBA s Atlanta Dream. Prize packs, including free Dream tickets, are given away to fans on Saturday games. Georgia State will celebrate Letterman s Day on Saturday, Feb. 22, in a doubleheader TV game in games with UL Lafayette. A LITTLE ABOUT TEXAS STATE Texas State joined the Sun Belt in 2013 from the WAC. Located in west central Texas, 30 miles southwest of Austin and 45 miles northeast of San Antonio, Texas State was formerly known as Southwest Texas State. The university has grown to 35,000-plus students, the fifth largest in the state of Texas. The city of San Marcos, on the banks of the San Marcos River, is a town of about 50,000. Among the notable alumni of Texas State are former President Lyndon Baines Johnson, country singing legend George Strait and current National League All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (Arizona Diamondbacks). The Bobcats began women s basketball in They have earned two NCAA bids (1997 and 2003) and two WNIT bids, the most recent in In its inaugural season in the Sun Belt, Texas State has already had two players earn Player of the Week honors. Senior 6-foot-1 center Ashley Ezeh and 6-foot Erin Peoples have both been recognized for their achievements.

3 ThE LEAD STORY Georgia State is finding this year no lead is ever safe, regardless of the team. Georgia State may be the only team in the country this year to fully lead a game for all 39 minutes and then lose in the final minute, while also trailing in another game for all 39 minutes and pulling out the win in the final minute. The Panthers this season have gained leads of 14, 13, 13, 12 and 7 points, but couldn t handle those advantages and gave all those leads away, resulting in five losses.. The Panthers then found the reverse coming true in a trio of wins. On Nov. 27 against Belmont, Georgia State managed a school-record 23-point second-half rally to shock Belmont, On Nov. 29 against Jacksonville State, GSU had a 7-point second-half lead, only to give it away to JSU and see the Gamecocks open a 7-point lead. GSU rallied at the end to tie the game with 1:23 left and convert it into another home win. On Feb. 1 vs. UT Arlington, GSU gave away a halftime lead in the loss to the Mavericks. On Dec. 3 at Kennesaw State, GSU led by nine points twice in the second half, but gave it all back for a tie with 8:54 left to play. GSU built it back to eight points with 6:30, but it was back down to four points with 43 seconds and GSU had to make one-and-one free throws to ice the win. Against Kent, GSU had a 6-point lead with 7:40, but gave it away and had to win on a twopoint buzzer beater. GSU s Sun Belt opener was typical as GSU twice had 13-point leads in the second half and gave away 10-point leads in the final five minutes of both halves. GSU led with 5:20 and saw Troy tie the game at 73 and 75 But, GSU finished the game on a 10-2 run to claim the win. In the win at ASU, GSU led by 6, but lost it and trailed by 5 with 10 minutes, but rallied to win. In the win over UALR, GSU came from 13 points down in the second half, seven down with 3:25 to win on a final basket with two seconds left. At UL-Lafayette, GSU came from nine down in the second-half to earn that victory in a game with 10 lead changes Point BasKETS Kendra Long has made a school-record point baskets. She made her elite 200th trey at UL-Lafayette. In Georgia State history, only one men s player has made 200, guard Shellord Pinkett, who made 240 during his career from In Sun Belt Conference women s basketball history, only 12 have previously made 200 career 3-point baskets. The tournament will be held at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, La. ON THE ROAD AGAIN Georgia State played 13 of its first 19 games away this seasson, The Panthers went from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1 between home games. After that one, they had 17 days between the next game at home on Jan. 18 vs. UALR. That means in a seven-week span, GSU had only one home game. GSU has road games left at Troy and then a week trip to Texas to play UT Arlington and Texas State. Kayla Nolan needs 8 points for 600 career points Ashley Watson needs 14 points for 400 career points Kendra Long needs 11 points for 300 this season, a third consecutive year over 300 points NUMEROLOGY Alisha Andrews needs 63 points for 1,000 career points Andrews needs 9 steals for 250 Long needs 14 rebounds for 400 Gaby Moss needs 30 points for 300 career points TEAM NOTES Scrappy Georgia State has been finding a way to win, pulling out victories by one point, three games by two points, another by three points, in OT by five points and others by six, eight (twice) and 11 points. GSU started the season 0-5 with three games in the WNIT, but has come back to win 10 of the last 17, including six of the 10 in the Sun Belt. Players have gotten hurt (13 starters used), players have rotated in and out (13 with 125-plus minutes), players have fouled out (14 times), and only one has survived to start all 22 games. But, the sum of the parts may have been better than the individual talent. The defense hustles along, averaging 9.1 steals on the season. The team loves high-scoring games, but can withstand the slower ones (wins 56-55, 60-54, over UALR and 63-55). The Panthers have hit 87, 85, 81, 80, 77, 77, 76 and 75 in high gear. The balance allows for pointers (third-most made, SBC, fourth-most per game, 5.4), but with five players over 6-foot-2 the inside game is now a factor as a JUCO transfer and three freshmen are blossoming. With a trio with 24 or more treys, 6-foot-4 center Brittany Logan adds the balance now with three double-double efforts in the paint and Hayley Gerrin another one.

4 Coach SHARON BALDWIN-TENER Sharon Baldwin-Tener, named GSU s head coach in April of 2010, has known how to win as both a collegiate player and collegiate coach. In her fourth season at GSU, the recruiting has shown some pieces are in place for a solid future. She picked up her 200th career win as a head coach on Dec. 29, 2010 vs. Mississippi Valley State (91-65) and guided GSU to the 500th all-time win in school history on Jan. 9, 2011 in a win over Hofstra (84-70) In eight years, she turned the East Carolina women s basketball program around, winning 126 games, while earning postseason bids to the NCAA and WNIT tournaments. The Lady Pirates of ECU won the C-USA Tournament in Atlanta is a homecoming for Baldwin-Tener as she played her prep ball in Smyrna and her college ball at both Kennesaw State and the University of Georgia. She was an assistant coach at Georgia and a head coach at Life University in Marietta Those eight years at ECU followed her season as the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year honor in her only season at Mercer University in Macon. She first gained notice as the NAIA National Coach of the Year at Life University, where she began that program with a final No. 7 ranking in its first year and produced a team ranked No. 1 in the national polls in her second season (2001). Her assistant coaching career was highlighted by being named the Naismith National Assistant Coach of the Year (1997) while she was in her seventh and final year at the University of Georgia under head coach Andy Landers. Baldwin-Tener enjoyed a successful playing career at both the high school and collegiate levels. At Wills High School (merged with Campbell High) in Smyrna, Ga., she averaged 21 points per contest as a senior and was named the 1985 Georgia Class 4A State Player-of-the-Year. Baldwin-Tener earned a bachelor s degree from Georgia in 1991 and completed her master s of education in 1997, also at Georgia. She and her husband, Matt, have two children: Luke (9, Feb. 4, 2004) and Samantha (8, Oct. 28, 2005). In her first three years at GSU, she became the only player in school history with three 50 or more 3-point baskets-made seasons. Her point baskets made has already moved her into first place on the school s all-time list. Long made six treys in a game vs. Towson on Feb. 14, 2013 and has made five 3-point shots in a game five times, so she is obviously a marked target for opposing defenses. She has 60 double-figure scoring games. Long has scored 1,156 points to become the 21st 1,000-point scorer in GSU history. She has played in 112 games, 14 behind the all-time school record. Long has started 95 games, meaning she should become the seventh player in school history to start 100 games. The was the fifth time in school history that GSU had made 10 3-point baskets in a game. The Panthers made 11-of-24 treys with Gaby Moss and Alisha Andrews each knocking down four 3-pointers. With the group of 3-point shooters on this year s team, a steady watch on this record will be kept. Against Belmont, GSU challenged that with 10-of-21 beyond the arc, with 9 made in the win against Arkansas State.

5 THREE OF A KIND Georgia State doesn t rely on just one player as the outside threat as three different players have made 23 or more 3-point shots. Ashlee Cole has 10 and Kayla Nolan has 9 made as GSU could soon have five players with double-digit treys. GSU s hot shooting trio: Kendra Long 41 made Alisha Andrews 29 made Gaby Moss 24 made 5 and 10 A STRONG 1-2 PUNCH Senior Kendra Long (No.10) and junior Alisha Andrews (No. 5) began playing as teammates back at age nine in metro Atlanta youth leagues. Now, they are re-united after Andrews came back to Atlanta after two years at UNCW in the CAA. They form quite a dynamic duo in the GSU backcourt. Check out their career combined numbers. GSU averages forcing 18.2 turnovers a game, while making 9.1 steals per game. A 21-game steal effort against Belmont was the fourth-highest in school history. When they re hot, they re hot. GSU scored 55 points in the second half against Belmont, 49 in the first half at San Jose State, 41 points in the second half against Kennesaw State, 40 in each half vs. UT Martin and even 37 points in the first half against No. 22 Georgia. The Panthers shot 53% and 53% in the second halves of the last two games to secure the wins. Georgia State averages 67.2 points per game. HITTING THE 3 Here s the accounting of Georgia State s top games this season from beyond the 3-point arc: 11-of-24 at UT-Martin 10-of-21 Belmont 9-of-14 at Arkansas State 8-of-20 Arkansas State 8-of-25 Georgia 8-of-29 UCF 6 four times NEXT ONE UP, BETTER BE READY: Because of injuries: Starter Ashley Watson missed 10 games and parts of others Starter Brittany Logan has missed 6 games and parts of others Starter Haley Gerrin has missed 3 full games and parts of others Forward Maryam Dogo has missed 4 games with injuries Georgia State has: Used 12 different starters in the first half of this season as a result of injuries. Only one player has started all 22 (Alisha Andrews). Using the full roster, 13 players have logged 125 or more minutes. As a result, the Panthers are finding several different combinations and highscorers from game-to-game and the players have the next one up mentality to step in when someone else can t go. Against Arkansas State on Jan. 14, the Panthers had three players all start their first collegiate game as a result of injuries. GSU has had four different players already score 20 or more points in a game this season: Kayla Nolan (25 vs. Stephen F. Austin), Kendra Long (23 vs. Belmont and 22 vs. Georgia), Alisha Andrews (22 vs. Belmont) and then Hayley Gerrin (23 vs. Jacksonville State). Gaby Moss just missed with a 16-point game at UT-Martin, hitting 4-of-4 from 3-point range and had 16 points in the Sun Belt opening win. Logan has four double-double games this season as she took her turn to lead with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the home opener vs. UCF, 16 points and 15 rebounds in the win at UL-Monroe, 12 points, 11 rebounds in the win at ULM and 14 points, 10 rebounds in the win over South Alabama. Maryam Dogo came off the bench to score 13 points in 13 minutes at SFA. Morgan Jackson came off the bench to score 12 points in 19 minutes against UCF. Miranda Smith has stepped in with a pair of 8-point games vs. N.C. A&T and Belmont. Ashanti Groover came off the bench with 8 points and 5 rebounds in 13 minutes vs. Belmont. Mariam Hannoun s first start resulted in 4 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Jamila Mayfield s first start resulted in 5 pints, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks.

FIVE STRAIGHT WINS With a five-game winning streak, Georgia State had its longest in four years. The Panthers did have a four-game win streak last year, but the last time they had a five-game win streak was in the season. Georgia State won six straight in a stretch from Nov. 27-Dec. 18, winning three at home and three on the road. GSU won 9 of 10 games from that Nov. 27 through Jan. 3 stretch of games. The school record is a 17-game win streak by the team and a trio of 10-game win streaks.

Watson had 12 games during the season where she was 100% when she shot two or more free throws. She made 8-of-9 (.889) and 12-of-14 (.857) for most made in a game. After sitting her transfer year from UNCW, Andrews plays her first season at Georgia State. Andrews becomes the smallest player in the Sun Belt with South Alabama s Brittany Webb at 5-foot-2 and Texas State s Ayriel Anderson at 5-foot-3 on the roster. Research continues from NCAA rosters, but Andrews is shorter than any players in these 16 conferences: ACC, A-Sun, Big Sky, Big Ten, Big 12, CAA, C-USA, MVC, Moutain West. OVC, Pac-12, Patriot, SEC, SoCon, Sun Belt or West Coast conferences. Think she s a defensive liability? Evidently not as she was voted to the CAA All-Defensive Team her two years at UNCW. Her pesky-quick hands force team turnovers galore and she has 238 career steals. Think she can t score? In her third year of college basketball, she scored 937 points (10.6). Naturally, she finds the open 3-pointer and knocks them down with 161 in her career. A driver and penetrator, she s made 431 assists in drawing the post players to her and she finds the open teammate. Or, the post players foul her and she knocks down 75% of her 155 career free throws. Think she isn t tough? Her preference is to play all 40 minutes, but she has averaged 35 minutes a game in her career when the coach makes her take a quick break. She s never missed a game or a start. She leads GSU in minutes played this year. Think you can t win with her running the show? She led UNCW to 24- and 20-win seasons in a league in the top 12 RPI ratings both years, while earning WNIT postseason bids. She led her high school team to 58 straight wins, winning one state title and bowing in the second.

14 Georgia State Begins Sun Belt Season After more than a year s worth of anticipation, the wait was finally over. On July 1, 2012, the Georgia State Athletic Department officially became a member of the Sun Belt Conference and on July 1, 2013, all sports became eligible for championships in 14 league-sponsored sports. Basketball joins the mix in November and will compete in the Sun Belt tournament in March in New Orleans. The men s team was a charter member in 1976; the women make their debut in We look forward to playing a leadership role in the Sun Belt Conference and our teams competing for Sun Belt titles and postseason berths, Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick said. It really is a tremendous day in Georgia State sports history. GSU s move onto a national stage in all sports officially began on April 9, At a press conference inside the Georgia Dome, Sun Belt Conference officials joined Georgia State President Mark Becker and Levick at the public announcement of the Panthers impending conference move. A feasibility study begun in the fall of 2011 concluded the Panthers were well positioned to make the jump to the FBS level and that the Sun Belt would be an ideal fit. The rest has been history. The move now allows GSU to build on regional rivalries with several schools within driving distance, while also showcasing its talented teams to the country. It is a return home of sorts for Georgia State, which was a founding member of the Sun Belt Conference in At that time, the league consisted of six universities playing across four men s sports basketball, soccer, tennis and golf. Women s sports did not compete in the Sun Belt or NCAA at that time. Today, the Sun Belt Conference sponsors 18 sports, including 14 that the Panthers will vie for conference titles. On the men s side, GSU will compete in baseball, basketball, football, golf and tennis, while women s sports include basketball, golf, cross country, soccer, softball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and court volleyball. GSU has also announced plans to add women s swimming and diving, another Sun Belt-sponsored sport. The Panthers already own two Sun Belt Conference titles in the past year. Ten individual sports were accepted into the league for , giving the women s cross country and men s tennis teams a leg up on collecting hardware. Each squad won the Sun Belt title and helped Georgia State finish ahead of two SBC schools in the Vic Bubas Cup standings (an all sports trophy) despite competing in only half of the league s sports. Sun Belt TOURNAMENT IN NEW ORLEANS The Sun Belt Tournament will be held at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans with both the women s and men s teams competing the same week of March Photo courtesy Frank Aymami
