The Hawks are in the NCAA Tournament, advancing twice on PK s. - Xavier, hosting an NCAA Tournament game for the first time, has reached the tournament four times in Andy Fleming s five years. - Monmouth has won eight conference regular season championships in 11 seasons under McCourt and five conference tournament championships. - The Hawks won the 2013 MAAC Regular Season Championship and the 2014 MAAC Tournament Championship in their first two years in the league after moving from the Northeast Conference. - The winner of Thursday s game will advance to face No. 5 Indiana in the NCAA Tournament Second Round in Bloomington, Ind. - The Hawks lead the nation in goals against average (0.42) and save percentage (.898). - Monmouth allowed just two goals in MAAC play, the fewest of any MAAC team in at least the last 10 years, the furthest back complete statistical information is available. - Monmouth sophomore goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky, who leads the nation in goals against average (0.42) and save percentage (.895), has posted a 0.26 goals against average and.921 save percentage in 25 games against MAAC foes over the last two seasons. - Monmouth didn t allow a goal at home in the final 687 minutes played this season. Gary Kowal Kowal s ...gkowal@monmouth.edu 2014 MEN S SOCCER BREAKING DOWN THE XAVIER MUSKETEERS Xavier, ranked No. 14 in the most recent NSCAA/Continental Tire National Rankings, reached the Big East Championship Final before falling to No. 23 Providence, 2-1. The Musketeers started the season inauspiciously with losses to Lipscomb and then-no. 21 Wisconsin. But since, they ve gone , including wins over then-no. 15 Marquette and No. 8 Georgetown. They also tied then-no. 6 Creighton and Providence. Xavier posted a record against five teams in this year s tournament field. The Musketeers are led by Will Walker, who has compiled 19 points on five goals and nine assists. Matt Vasquenza is Xavier s top goal scorer with six to go along with four assists. Alex Ridsdale and Jalen Brown have scored four goals apiece, while dishing out three and two assists, respectively. Garrett Halfhill has also chipped in with three goals and an assist, while Walker Andriot and Cory Brown have two goals and two assists each. Josh Grant has also scored twice, while Kyle Martin and Owen Steinwall have dished out five and four assists, respectively. ALL-TIME VS. XAVIER Thursday s match will commence the all-time series between Monmouth and Xavier. RUBBING ELBOWS WITH THE NATION S BEST A fixture in the national polls over the last several years, the Hawks are currently receiving votes in the College Soccer News Top 30 Poll and received votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire National Rankings earlier this season. Monmouth reached a program-high of the No. 4 ranking in NOT THEIR FIRST RODEO Now in their fourth year with the Hawks, Matt Jeffery and Derek Luke both started in Monmouth s last two NCAA Tournament contests against Stony Brook and Connecticut in Bryant Avalos and Tim Ballard were also on the team, but did not see any game action. NIGRO KNOCKS IN GOLDEN GOAL Dave Nigro scored the golden goal in the 104th minute of the MAAC Championship to send Monmouth to the NCAA Tournament. Fairfield goalkeeper Matt Turner punched away David Acuna Camacho s cross into the box. But Nigro was waiting for the ball just inside the top of the 18-yard box, played it off his chest down to the pitch and hit a left-footed strike off one bounce inside the right post for the game winner. RED CARD, BLUE GOAL After Fairfield went on top, 1-0, in the 72nd minute of the MAAC Championship Final, the Stags Angus Hastings was sent off in the 81st minute for stomping on a fallen David Acuna Camacho s leg inside the 18-yard box. The booking resulted in a penalty kick, which Emmanuel Senyah Agyemang calmly converted for the equalizer. MOST VALUABLE YAYA Emmanuel Senyah Yaya Agyemang was named the MAAC Championship Most Valuable Player, both for his work on the Hawks back line and putting away a crucial penalty kick for the equalizer in the 81st minute of the MAAC Final against Fairfield. Dave Nigro, Matt Jeffery and Derek Luke joined Agyemang on the MAAC Championship All-Tournament Team. GEE WILLIKERS Freshman Andrew Gee scored in each of the Hawks first two MAAC Championship victories this postseason, putting Monmouth on top, 2-0, in both instances. The second goal proved to be the game winner against Iona. Gee also assisted on Miguel Alves gamewinning goal against Siena. HE S PRETTY GOOD ON OFFENSE, TOO Senior back Matt Jeffery s reputation has been built largely on defense, having earned back-to-back MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. But he s made large offensive contributions late this season. He assisted on Dom Sarle s game-winning goal against then-league-leading Rider on Oct. 29, before scoring a goal of his own off a Derek Luke cross in the MAAC Semifinals against Iona.

3 TWICE IS NICE Senior back Matt Jeffery was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in as many seasons. He joins current Monmouth Associate Head Coach Hugh MacDonald as the only Hawks to win two conference defensive player of the year honors. Jeffery has been instrumental on a Hawks defense that leads the nation in goals against average (0.42) and save percentage (.898) and has posted 12 shutouts this season. Jeffery was also one of only two unanimous All-MAAC First Team honorees. SIX SELECTED Joining Jeffery as All-MAAC selections were Dom Sarle (1st Team) and second team honorees Emmanuel Senyah Agyemang, Eric Klenofsky, Derek Luke and Dave Nigro. SMART KIDS Five Hawks were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Derek Luke and Dom Sarle were joined by seniors Bryant Avalos and Tim Ballard and junior John Egan. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, student-athletes must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 on a 4.0 scale. KLENOFSKY, HAWKS DEFENSE CLICKING Sophomore goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky and the Hawks defense have posted shutouts in 18 of 25 contests against MAAC competition since the beginning of league play last season, including nine of 13 games against conference foes this season. Monmouth gave up only two goals in MAAC play this season, with the first coming with the Hawks playing a man down for more than 72 minutes at Iona. The two goals against in MAAC play are the fewest by a MAAC team in the 10 years that full conference statistics are available. The Hawks.898 save percentage and 0.42 goals against average both rank first in the nation so far this season. Klenofsky s identical 0.42 goals against average and.895 save percentage also lead NCAA Division I goalkeepers. Monmouth s 0.60 shutout percentage also ranks in the top five in the nation. In MAAC play alone, Klenofsky posted an 0.18 goals against average and a.947 save percentage in an even 1,000 minutes in net. GEE, KLENOFSKY RECOGNIZED Freshman midfielder Andrew Gee and sophomore goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky were recognized by the MAAC as Rookie and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, on Nov. 10. The ECAC and Big Apple Soccer honored Klenofsky later in the week as Defensive Player and Player of the Week, respectively. Gee scored a goal and added an assist on Miguel Alves game-winning goal as the Hawks defeated Siena in the MAAC Quarterfinals. Klenofsky posted his 11th and 12th clean sheets of the year in wins over Saint Peter s and Siena. The sophomore made four saves at Saint Peter s, before tying his career high with seven stops against the Saints. WHERE HAVE I SEEN THIS BEFORE? All three of Monmouth s goals against Siena in the MAAC Quarterfinals came off of crosses into the 18-yard box. The scoring started with Andrew Gee playing Dom Sarle wide before the senior crossed to Miguel Alves, who headed it in from close range. 11 minutes later, Gee was the beneficiary of a beautiful Derek Luke cross into the box, where the freshman headed it past Siena keeper Josh Weiss. Finally, Brandon McCarthy played the ball wide to Bryant Avalos in the 67th minute, before Avalos cross found the foot of Dom Sarle on one touch for the score. WE MUST PROTECT THIS FIELD After allowing two goals to Lehigh on Sept. 1, the Hawks defense closed out the home regular season slate with more than 687 consecutive scoreless minutes at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn. The Monmouth defense shut out Holy Cross, Canisius, Manhattan, Fairfield, Marist, Rider and Siena consecutively, in addition to a season-opening clean sheet against UMass Lowell. MARKSMAN FROM MASSACHUSSETTS Brandon McCarthy led the Hawks with three goals in MAAC play, including markers in each of the Hawks last two games. The sophomore scored the equalizer in the 70th minute of a 1-1 tie at Siena on Nov. 1 off assists from Dom Sarle and Miguel Alves. McCarthy then finished off another Alves assist from the top right corner of the box, rocketing a shot underneath the crossbar for the game winner. McCarthy s first goal of the season was also a game winner, as the sophomore sniped a goal from 20 yards out against Manhattan on Oct. 8. hourglass RIVALRY FINISHER Dom Sarle broke a scoreless tie in the 83rd minute to give Monmouth a 1-0 win in an hourglass rivalry game against Rider on Oct. 29. Derek Luke s corner first found Matt Jeffery s head on the near side of the box. Jeffery headed the ball downward toward the middle of the box, where Sarle hit it on one touch out of midair inside the left post for the game-winning goal. MCCARTHY S MAGIC Brandon McCarthy struck for his first collegiate goal in the first start of his career in the 13th minute against Manhattan on Oct. 8. McCarthy took a pass from Miguel Alves 20 yards from the goal, turned, took one touch and launched a rocket underneath the crossbar for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

4 YAYA SHOOTS HAWKS PAST CANISIUS Emmanuel Senyah Agyemang scored the game-winning goal in the Hawks 1-0 win over Canisius to open MAAC play this season. The senior back/ midfielder had gone down with an injury just moments earlier, was waved back on by the referee, streaked down the right sideline and worked a give-and-go into the box with Dom Sarle to score the game winner from a difficult angle near the right post. The goal was the third of Agyemang s career, with all three coming dramatically. His first goal came in the 2012 NEC Tournament to tie the semifinals in the second half against Fairleigh Dickinson. Agyemang then scored in the 90th minute to salvage a tie against Seton Hall last season. GETTING EVEN WITH THE WILDCATS Jelani Williams scored the equalizer in the 75th minute as the Hawks tied Villanova, 1-1, on the road Sept. 20. The tie came a year after Monmouth defeated Villanova, 2-1, in overtime on The Great Lawn. ROLLING AT RUTGERS Monmouth defeated Rutgers, 3-0, on Sept. 16. Dom Sarle, Dave Nigro and Bryant Avalos each had a goal and an assist as the Hawks defeated the Scarlet Knights for the first time in program history. Rutgers won the first 11 meetings, with the last meeting prior to this season coming in 2004, Coach McCourt s first year with the team. GETTING AHEAD The Hawks scored both of their two goals in a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross on headers, Sept. 13. John Egan sent a perfect cross to the far post for Dom Sarle s goal in the 61st minute, before David Acuna Camacho s corner found Bryant Avalos head in the 81st minute. SNIPING A DRAMATIC WIN Monmouth trailed 1-0 for more than 65 minutes on Sept. 7 at Albany before John Egan delivered the equalizer in the 89th minute. Following a scoreless first overtime, Jelani Williams sniped the game-winning goal in the 106th minute off a Bryant Avalos cross. OPENING STATEMENT Monmouth opened the 2014 season with a 5-0 shutout of UMass Lowell. Dom Sarle and Dave Nigro had two goals and an assist each, while Bryant Avalos also added a goal. John Egan and Derek Luke also picked up assists. For his effort, Sarle was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week. PRESEASON HONORS Matt Jeffery and Emmanuel Senyah Agyemang were each honored this preseason with multiple honors. Jeffery took the top prize as a College Soccer News Preseason All-America Third Team selection. Both Jeffery and Agyemang were picked as Preseason All-MAAC. Jeffery and Agyemang combined with the nation s leader in goals-against average, goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky to create one of the toughest defenses in the MAAC to score on last season. From the beginning of conference play last season, the Hawks allowed just three goals for a 0.23 goals-against average with nine shutouts, all tops in the league. Overall, the Hawks ranked 23rd in the nation in team goals-against average (0.74) and 27th in shutout percentage (0.45).
