3 SETTING THE STAGE Seton Hall looks to find its stride heading into conference play when it hosts a pair of Empire State opponents in Cornell and Albany this weekend. SHU owns a victory in its lone previous meeting with the Big Red but Patrick Farmer s squad will enter Thursday s contest at and as one of two teams in the nation who have yet to concede a goal in 2015 (Rutgers). At overall, the Great Danes have found a groove over the last two weeks as well, winning three of their last four matches and out-scoring opponents by an 11-to-3 margin over that span. The Hall and Albany will be meeting for the first time in the history of the programs. BATTLE TESTED The Hall will be prepared for another test when undefeated Cornell rolls in to South Orange on Thursday after having played one of the toughest slates in the nation over the first four weeks. Seton Hall s first seven opponents have amassed a cumulative record of (.677) and that group includes four regionally ranked opponents in 23rd-ranked William & Mary (no. 1, Mid-Atlantic), Saint Joseph s (No. 6, Mid-Atlantic), Duquesne (No. 7, Mid-Atlantic) and James Madison (No. 10, Mid-Atlantic). The Pirates will also get just their third opportunity to play at home. By comparison, the five teams directly ahead of SHU in the BIG EAST standings have recorded 16 of their 23 combined wins (.696) at home. SETTLING IN Freshman goalkeeper Anna MacLean has emerged as a bright spot early in the 2015 campaign, racking up saves at an All- Conference level. Last week, the native Canadian totaled 14 stops while limiting Monmouth and a Saint Joseph s team that ranks in the top-25 nationally in scoring to two goals over 200 minutes. Ranked first in the conference and 18th nationally with 7.00 saves/game, MacLean has stopped 33 of 39 shots over her last four appearances (1.35 GAA) after allowing nine goals in her first two collegiate starts. MAIER THE MAESTRO Seton Hall nearly completed a comeback last time out against Saint Joseph s as junior Frankie Maier picked out classmate Sarah Fiorino with a corner kick for a late score. Maier is now tied atop the team ranking with four points after directly factoring into the team s last three goals - scoring one and assisting on two with well-placed corners. Maier entered the year with four career points after appearing in all 36 of the team s matches over her first two seasons in South Orange. GONZALEZ GETS THE CALL (AGAIN) Following the match with Cornell, Seton Hall freshman Eva Gonzalez will once again briefly leave the team to spend time training with the Mexico U20 National side in advance of its FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign later this year. Gonzalez, who also missed part of the preseason to train with the national team, is expected to return prior to the BIG EAST opener against St. John s (9/27). The Mesquite, Texas native previously helped the Mexico U17 side to its first-ever CONCACAF Gold Cup title in 2013, also appeared for the U20 s at the Women s NTC Invitational hosted by U.S. Soccer in June. Nicknamed Mouse, Gonzalez appeared as a sub in the pirates first two matches after recording nearly 60 points as a senior captain for a Bishop Lynch team that won a state title in her final season PIRATES EARN DRAW AT MONMOUTH On Labor Day, the Pirates traveled to West Long Branch and came away with their first clean sheet of the season, earning 0-0 draw behind six saves from freshman Anna MacLean. It was the first shutout in MacLean s young career and the Thunder Bay native became the third different keeper to register a clean sheet for The Hall over the last two years. RETURN TO FORM The shutout of Monmouth featured the type of defensive effort that the Pirates became known for in their first year under Rick Stainton. In 2014, Seton Hall finished with six shutouts in 18 matches and yielded one goal or less on 13 occasions - including eight of nine non-conference matches. EXCELLING IN EXTRA TIME The Pirates result at Monmouth extended a significant unbeaten streak the team has amassed under head coach Rick Stainton as the Seton Hall is now in matches that have reached extra time over the last two years. Six of those matches have ended in an SHU shutout and only five total goals have been scored in those eight games. WELCOME ABOARD Following his first full season at the helm in South Orange, Stainton inked a class of 11 decorated newcomers that is set to make an immediate impact. Canadian goalkeeper Anna MacLean started the first three matches of the season while the class also included reinforcements throughout the lineup including three defenders, three midfielders and four forwards. With Sophia Duffy making her debut last weekend, all 11 freshmen have now seen game action. PERFECT PRESEASON What You Should Know... Head Coach Rick Stainton has stressed the importance of securing results in the lead up to his second year in charge and the Pirates have responded in kind during the preseason, topping Delaware and Iona in exhibition action. Junior Frankie Maier netted the lone goal ( 89) in a 1-0 road victory over the Blue Hens while junior Sarah Fiorino opened the scoring before assisting on the game-winner from freshman Tanika Roach in a 2-1 win against the Gaels. MacLean did not surrender a goal in 105 minutes played and as a team, the Pirates did not concede in the run of play in either match. Head Coach Rick Stainton Rick Stainton was appointed the third head coach in program history following the 2013 season, returning to Seton Hall after previously serving as an assistant coach for the Pirates for two seasons. In his first season on the sidelines for The Hall, the Stainton-led Pirates vaulted back into the NSCAA Northeast Regional poll for the first time since August 2012 when Stainton was on staff as an assistant. The Pirates went on to establish themselves as a stout defensive unit, posting six clean sheets in 18 outings and surrendered one goal or less 13 times - including eight of nine non-conference matches. No stranger to South Orange, Stainton made his way back to The Hall where he was charged with directing the program s recruiting, training and in-match strategy as well as overseeing the team s budget in his time as an assistant under former head coach Kazbek Tambi. During his first season on staff, the Pirates posted their largest win total since the turn of the millennium, recording nine victories and earning a home match in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament. The match proved to be a memorable one as Seton Hall scored the second postseason win in school history and the first via shutout with a 1-0 defeat of St. John s. Following a 2012 season in which Seton Hall registered seven more victories, five of which were of the shutout variety; Stainton took over as the head women s soccer coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University. During his brief stint in Teaneck, Stainton led the Knights to one of the most successful seasons in the history of a young program. He took over a squad whose senior class had registered only 11 wins in the previous three years and engineered a rapid turnaround, guiding the Knights to an record that included a mark in Northeast Conference (NEC) play and the #2-seed in the conference tournament. A seasoned professional with extensive coaching experience at a variety of levels, Stainton holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) A License and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Premier Diploma, as well as a NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma. His coaching résumé is an impressive one, and features a stretch in which he was onstaff for the Garden State-based women s professional side Sky Blue FC. While with Sky Blue FC, Stainton was elevated to head coach and worked with some of the most prominent women s players in the world, coaching a total of 12 players who competed in the 2011 FIFA World Cup including United States internationals Tobin Heath, Carli Lloyd, Heather O Reilly and Christie Rampone. That quartet went on to play an integral role on the United States side that captured its third FIFA World Cup title in 2015.
