What do 4-H members earn by leading? the answers to: floyd@ag.tamu.edu to receive 5 points towas your jacket, patch, t shirt or senior scholarship FLOYDADA 4-H COMMUNITY SERVICE Floydada 4-H families are asked to meet Sunday, May 1 at 2:00, at the Jimmie Lou Stewart Park between the High School and the Massie Activity Center to clean the park and have an ice cream party. Come join the fun and help your community at the same time! STAR APPLICATIONS DUE Bronze, Silver and Gold Star applications are all due to the CEO on Friday, May 6 by 4 PM. Two awas are given for each age division. Information about these awas and the applications are poed on the Floyd County 4-H web site at floyd-co.tamu.edu. HALE COUNTY 4-H DANCE Hale County is hoing a 4-H Dance on Friday, May 6 at the Hale County Rodeo Grounds from 7-10 PM. There will be a $2 charge to get in. FLOYD COUNTY 4-H T-SHIRTS We have 2 adult small t-shirts in our office that may be purchased for $8 each. If you need a 4-H t-shirt give us a call or come by and pick one up.
2 LOCKNEY 4-H MEETING AND OFFICER ELECTIONS Lockney 4-H will meet Monday, May 9 at the Lockney Community Center at 6 PM. If you are intereed in running for an office, please let Beth Bramlet know. Please come prepared to make a short speech on why you think you would be a good officer. *** MEMORIALS Did you know that memorials for loved ones can be made to the Floyd County 4-H Scholarship fund? Memorials help fund our Gold Star scholarships. *** STAR INTERVIEWS Interviews for the Bronze, Silver and Gold Star Awas will take place on Tuesday, May 10 at the County Extension Office beginning at 4:30 PM. Come in church clothes and be prepared to answer queions and give a short presentation on what all you have done in 4-H. 4-H ers mu go through an interview and complete a reco book to be eligible for the Bronze, Silver or Gold Star Awa. To be eligible for the Gold Star Awa and $500 scholarship, you mu be 15 years old as of September 1 of the current year, mu have carried at lea 3 projects and mu have been in 4-H for at lea 3 years. *** COW PATTIE BINGO If you plan to attend a camp or State Roundup please come by and pick up a book of Cow Pattie Bingo tickets. Proceeds from Cow Pattie Bingo go to help pay your expenses. There are 10 tickets to a book and each ticket cos $5. You get 10 points towa your jacket, t-shirt, patch, blanket or senior scholarship. We give prizes of $200, $300 and $500 and a $50 cash prize to the 4-H er who sells the mo tickets. *** I DARE YOU Danforth I Dare You Leadership Awa - The I Dare You Awa is presented to two 4-H ers who exhibit excellence in character, personal development and leadership potential in honor of William H. Danforth. It is one of the mo preigious awas presented to an individual in any youth organization in the United States. The Floyd County Parent Leader Association selects the recipients. 1. Each year Floyd County will awa two (2) senior 4-H ers with the Danforth I Dare You Leadership Awa. 2. All senior 4-H ers are eligible to apply. Intereed 4-H ers mu complete the county I Dare You Leadership Awa application and submit it to the County Extension Office before the deadline. 3. No 4-H Reco Book is required to apply. 4. The Floyd County 4-H Parent/Leaders will select the winners each year, after reviewing all applications, by a secret ballot voting process H er may only receive the I Dare You Leadership Awa one time in his or her 4-H career. ****************************************** ELECTRIC CAMP June 2 - July 1, 2011 Aspendale Mountain Retreat Center, Cloudcroft, NM Ages: Mu be at lea 13 and not pa 19 as of 8/31/2010 Co: $140 SUMMER READING AT THE FLOYD COUNTY LIBRARY We are in need of help to lead programs at the Floyd th County Library, July 6, 13, 20, & 27. The purpose is to promote Reading all during the summer, but it is an excellent opportunity for 4-H members to develop leadership skills. Programs are conducted from 10-10:45. You tell about being a 4-H er, tell about the projects you are involved in, show books they could read that relate to your project area, read a ory, lead an activity, lead a craft project that relates to your project area. If you would be willing to help out, call ASAP. Elementary aged youth are encouraged to attend. They can earn Dairy Queen coupons for the hours of readng they do. 4-H members rengthen their leadership skills and get points towa their jackets, t-shirts, patches, blankets and senior scholarships. COUNTY COUNCIL DAY CAMP & OFFICER ELECTIONS All newly elected club officers for Lockney and Floydada are part of the County 4-H Council. The council will meet at the county extension office at 9:30 th am on Thursday, June 9. We will travel to the Plains Bapti Assembly Camp and be there from 10 AM - 2 PM. The Council will elect officers, we will have an officer training and we will make plans for County Camp. Lunch will be provided. The co for each council member will be $5. Please RSVP by Friday, June 3.
3 ISSUE IDENTIFICATION FORUM A big thanks goes to the 4-H ers and their families who provided food, participated and helped serve at the Issue Identification Forum on Monday, April 18 at the Floyd County Friends Unity Center. Those who helped included: Food: Korleigh Webb Mallory, Jacob & Rachel Graham Jake, Brett & Clay Moore Kylie & Remington Ricketts Neal Potts Hunter Lefevre Stephen & Lyndee Setliff Luke & Lauryn Carroll Participated and Served: Sammie & Lyndee Setliff Winfield & Jianna Davenport Kriie, Luke & Lauryn Carroll Beth Bramlet Kriy Lefevre **** DISTRICT FASHION SHOW Mallory Graham, senior 4-H er from Floydada 4-H advanced to State by winning fir place at the Dirict 4-H Fashion Show held Tuesday, April 12 at Abernathy Elementary School. Mallory participated in the Senior Buying Formal Division and placed fir enabling her to participate in State 4-H Roundup held on the Texas A&M campus at College Station, Texas. Other Floyd County 4- H ers who participated in the Dirict Show in their respective categories and their placings included: Junior Conruction Specialty: Caitlin Bishop - 3 place; Junior Buying Casual: Lauryn Carroll - 3 place; Junior Buying Specialty: Payton Teeple - 1 place; Junior Embelished or Recycled: Korleigh Webb - 3 place and Intermediate Buying Casual: Rachel Graham - 3 place. The objectives of the 4-H Fashion Show are to apply the knowledge of fibers and fabrics to warobe selection, learn conruction techniques or comparison shopping skills, become aware of fashion interpretation and yle and practice presentation and modeling techniques. DISTRICT STORYBOARD COMPETITION Twelve Floyd County 4-H ers participated in the Dirict II Fashion Story Boa competition. Fashion Story Boas were displayed at the Dirict Fashion Show held Tuesday, April 12 at the Abernathy Elementary School and awas were presented. Floyd County 4-H members, their respective categories and placings were as follows: Junior Pet Clothing - Lauryn Carroll - 3 place; Junior Non Wearable - Payton Teeple - 1 place and Luke Carroll - 3 place, Kortney Campbell - participation; Junior Wearable - Payton Teeple - 1 place, Kylie Ricketts - participation, Carly Lehman - participation, Caitlin Bishop - participation and Korleigh Webb - participation. Intermediate Wearable - Rachel Graham - participation, Catharine Kemp - participation; Intermediate Non Wearable - Remington Ricketts - 1 place. Senior Jewelry - Jianna Davenport - 3 place. 4-H ers participating in the 4-H Fashion Design project were asked to create a look in one of the five categories inspired by nature s four elements - Fire, Water, Earth or Wind. Fashion Story Boa is one of the many projects offered through Texas AgriLife Extension and Floyd County 4- H. Fashion Story Boa was led by Patty Davenport. * COUNTY ARCHERY MATCH The Floyd County 4-H Archery Match was held Sunday, April 03, Competitors shot six rounds of six arrows indoors and then had one shot at each of the twelve 3-D targets. All competitors shot barebows. Participating as Clover Kids were Ryder Glass, Carson Miller and Lindee Miller. Fir year junior participants nd were Corbin Lehman, 1 place; Cutter Smith, 2 place and Carly Lehman, 3 place. In the junior division, 1 nd place was Kaleb Whittle, 2 was Caleb Miller and 3 was Luke Carroll. Intermediates were Alex Glass, 1 nd and Rachel Graham, 2. Seniors were Jianna nd Davenport, 1 and Jacob Graham, 2. High point individual overall was Kaleb Whittle with 310 points. The Dirict 2 4-H Archery Match will be held on Satuay, April 30 in Littlefield. 4-H is an educational program for youth ages 9 to 19. The 4-H archery project teaches safety and the fundamentals of archery. It also builds self-confidence and self-eeem. Bows, arrows and targets are provided for youth to use. The Floyd County 4-H archery project has been the recent recipient of two grants. The fir was a $500 grant from the Texas Friends of 4-H. This grant was used to purchase five bows for the members to use. The second grant was a $4,600 grant from Eaon Archery. Bows, arrows, 3-D targets and indoor foam targets were purchased with the Eaon grant. The grant money is greatly appreciated. We can now equip more youth with better equipment. The archery project meets October through April. The coaches are Bill Glass, Winfield Davenport and Patty Davenport and the newly certified youth assiant, Jianna Davenport
4 RECORD BOOK TRAININGS If you are intereed in learning to compile a Reco Book, we are offering a series of trainings to help you get arted. We will offer work days to come and work on our books at the County Extension Office beginning on Monday, May 16. We will meet May 16, 5:30-7:00; 23, 5:30-7:00; 26, 12:00-1:00; June 7 11:30-1:00; and June 20, 5:30-7:00. Please RSVP if you plan to attend so we will know how many handouts are needed. 4-H ers and parents are encouraged to attend and a variety of dates and times are offered, May 16, May 23, May 26, June 7, and June 20. ** 2011 DISTRICT 2 4-H EVENTS CALENDAR Date Event Location May 1 Roundup/Grass ID/ Ento ID/Beef & Horse Quiz Bowl Levelland May 31- July 2 Leadership Lab, Levelland June 21 Dirict Horse Show, TTU June Texas 4-H Roundup College Station June 27-July 1 Electric Camp, Cloudcroft, NM July 13 Dirict Recobook Judging Lubbock *** MULTI COUNTY DOG PROJECT The Floyd County 4-H Dog project club will be sponsoring a 4-H Dog Play day scheduled for Satuay, May 21 at 3 pm in Plainview. The play day will be held at the Lloyd Wood Park on the corner of Fifth & Joliet. Dog trainers will be on hand to assi 4-H members in training their dogs in obedience and agility. Members are asked to bring nylon collars and leashes for their dogs. Floyd County 4-H dog project leader CJ Jacobs also reminds members to bring their lawn chairs, water for dogs and water for 4-H members. CJ will also have her dog Barlow on hand to do a freeyle demonration. All 4-H members in the area are invited to bring their dog to the event. The event is sponsored by the 4-H Clubs in Floyd and Hale counties. ** 2011 GOLF CHALLENGE The 2011 Texas 4-H Golf Challenge for the north region will be held July 6, 2011 at the Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock. Youth between the ages of are encouraged to attend. Participants do not have to be a member of 4-H to participate. Teams will consi of three members and each team will pay a $90 entry fee. The one day event will cover the rules & etiquette of golf, golf course/turf grass management and sport nutrition curriculum. PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT RESULTS Congratulations to Luke Carroll, Lauryn Carroll, Korleigh Webb and Catharine Kemp on their county and dirict photography entries. Lauryn had a white awa for her Plant/Flora entry. Luke had a red awa for Animals/Domeic, red for Elements of Design, red for Nature and Landscape and white for Details and Macro. Korleigh Webb had a red awa for her People entry. Catharine Kemp had a red awa for her People entry, a white awa for Animals/Wildlife, red for Elements of Design, blue for Nature & Landwscape, blue for Details and Macro, red for Night Photography, blue for Dominant Color and blue for Catch All. Jake Bramlet and Neal Potts have entered photographs in the State Photography Conte. Placings will be announced at State Roundup. COUNTY 4-H ROUNDUP Floyd County 4-H ers participated in County Roundup on Tuesday, April 19 at the Floyd County Friends Unity Center in preparation for dirict competition to be held Satuay, May 7 at Levelland Middle School. 4-H ers participating and their respective categories included: Juniors: Open Educational Presentation - Kortney Campbell and Lauryn Carroll; Shooting Sports Educational Presentation - Kaleb Whittle and Luke Carroll; Share The Fun Musical - Payton Teeple; Share The Fun Vocal - Brooklyn Golden and Share The Fun Choreographed Routine - Korleigh Webb. Intermediates: Share The Fun Musical - Kirby Nixon and Share The Fun Vocal - McKenna Johnson. Seniors: Healthy Educational Presentation - Jianna Davenport and Merritt Johnson and Family Life Educational Presentation - Jake Bramlet. Receiving the Mo Prepared Awas for the evening included Junior - Brooklyn Golden; Intermediate - McKenna Johnson and Seniors - Jianna Davenport and Merritt Johnson. County Council President SyAnn Foer introduced the acts and Beth Bramlet recognized participants. * WATER CAMP The Texas AgriLIife Extension office in Wa County will be hoing the annual water camp in Monahans on July The camp introduces participants to the many uses of water and how it impacts our daily lives. The camp includes field trips, water projects, gue speakers, home water use and plenty of recreational water activities. The camp cos $150 and the th regiration deadline is May 20. Please call if you have any queions regaing this camp.
