The $3 enrollment fee is due at the time of enrollment, payable online. 4-H leaders (organizational and project leaders) are also required to do their registrations online and choose Volunteer projects (not member projects). No fee for leaders to register. All NEW leaders are required to complete a DHHS form and return it to the Extension Office. SPEECH & COMMUNICATION CONTESTS Registration forms for Speech and Presentation contests are included in this newsletter. The contests will be held on Thursday, April 26 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Central Community College, Columbus. This is a great opportunity for 4-H ers to begin and build on their public speaking skills that will last a life time! JR. CAMP ON-LINE REGISTRATION Jr. Camp is scheduled for June 6-8, 2018 at Whispering Cedars near Genoa. 4-H ers from Platte, Antelope, Boone, Merrick, Nance, Polk and York counties are welcome to attend. Jr. Camp is for 4-H ers age 8 11 and the cost is $75.00 per camper. Some of the fun activities at this camp include a zip line, repelling wall, swimming, singing, campfires, crafts and MORE! New for this year is to register for Jr. Camp on-line. The on-line registration for camp is now open but you must be enrolled in 4-H and payment must be received by our office in order to participate in Jr. Camp. A requirement to attend Jr. Camp is to have the 4-H Participant Permission and Health form completed in 4HOnline. Here is the link to complete the on-line registration form or it also can be found on our website. RECRUITMENT NIGHT RE-CAP We had a wonderful turn out at Pizza Ranch this year for our 4-H Kick-Off and Recruitment Night! It was great to see the familiar faces but also some new ones. A special thanks goes out to our awesome and helpful volunteers! Thanks for coming out to help bus tables and greet fellow and new 4-H ers! 2 2018 NE STATE 4-H INDOOR ARCHERY RESULTS Several 4-H members participated in the 2018 Nebraska State 4-H Indoor Archery shoot held in January in Columbus. Congratulations to the following 4-H members who placed in their respective divisions: Kaden Hellbusch of Columbus (6 th, BHFS); Justin Lutjelusche of Columbus (1 st, FSL); Connor Wurtz of Columbus (2 nd, BHFS). Also, job well done to the rest of the Platte County 4-H ers who participated in this event: Braiten Beck, Bo Behlen, Cody Muhsman, Emilee Price and Will Stuthman. CALLING ALL 4-H ERS! Tractor Supply is one of our key partners! Twice a year, they hold a Paper Clover drive to where all of the proceeds get put back into local 4-H clubs. Paper clovers are sold for $1 each at each of the Tractor Supply Stores. In order to help spread the word about 4-H and answer questions from the customers who buy paper clovers, we like to have a few 4-H ers at the store during the clover drive. The dates for this spring are April We are looking for some 4-H ers who are interested in staffing the paper clover booth at Tractor Supply in Columbus at some point during those dates. This could be for a 1-2 hour shift or whatever works best for you. It can be on any of those dates as well and during anytime the store is open. You can bring some of your projects to display or create a 4-H display board so that you can share your 4-H experiences with customers as they come into Tractor Supply if you would like to. If you are interested in helping out at this event on any of those days, please contact Jody Wendt at or jwendt4@unl.edu. You can get service hours from this event as well! RURAL RECOGNITION BANQUET MARCH 14 Congratulations to Platte County 4-H award recipients who will be recognized at the Rural Recognition Banquet on Tuesday, March 27. 3 Quality Assurance will be offered through the program YQCA, Youth for the Quality Care of Animals. 4 H youth, aged 8 18, who are enrolled in a livestock project (beef, dairy, goat, poultry, rabbit, sheep and swine) need to complete quality assurance in order to show at county fair. I will be offering face to face sessions at the Platte County Extension Office and am available to conduct training at club meeting as my schedule allows. You can contact Aliesha at adethlefs2@unl.edu to set up a time. The deadline for quality assurance is May 31. In person sessions offered at the Extension Office are March 9, :00 11:30 am and May 21, :00 11:30 am. Registering for quality assurance will be online at using the Family 4 H Online login information for active youth. If you are in both 4 H and FFA, please register through the 4 H login option. Face toface sessions cost $3 and online sessions cost $12. This is paid online when you register. Youth will need to register online prior to coming to the face to face session. Face to face sessions will last at least one and a half hours. New this year at AKSARBEN is a Breeding Sheep and Breeding Goat Show! If you have a breeding animal, consider taking part in this new opportunity at AKSARBEN. There is also a change to the nomination process for State Fair and AKSARBEN. Exhibitors are required to submit their own nominations online at Market Beef DNA Envelopes are still due to the Extension Office by April 5. The Market Beef online nominations are due by April 15. There will be no late nominations accepted on Show Stock Manager. Step by step instructions on how to nominate an animal can be found at programs/plattecounty 4 h/. A fee of $6 will be paid online for the nominations of market animals. There is no fee for breeding animals or FFA Feeder Calves. Spring Rabbit Show at the Lancaster Event Center Exhibit Hall in Lincoln, Nebraska. The show begins at 9 am, with registration from 7:30 to 8:30 am. The show is open to youth aged 8 18 as of January 1. There are three rabbit classes available, as well as, a pee wee class. For more information, contact Bob at or Kate at Show Pig Show Feed Clinic with Central Plains Milling at 6:30 pm at Ag Park in the Upstairs Club Room. In order to show at State Fair and AKSARBEN, nominations must be completed online along with a DNA payment at by deadline. Registration Deadline April 13 LIVESTOCK PROGRESS SHOWS, ANIMAL SHOWS & CLINICS NEW to our website is a listing of Nebraska 4-H/Extension livestock progress shows, animal shows and clinics. This includes horse, rabbit, poultry, small pet, beef, swine, sheep and goat. Will post to the website progress shows, camps, clinics and other shows sponsored by Nebraska Extension and 4-H clubs. EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF RED Join us on March 15th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and be a part of the East Campus community for a day! An event where you ll learn how CASNR prepares students for careers in everything from animals to plants, soil to climate, golf to business, mechanization to leadership, and food to forensic science. You ll meet faculty, staff, and current students to explore campus in person, learn what life at Nebraska is really like, and get a true sense of being a Husker. RSVP by March 8th at or contact Sue Ellen Pegg with questions at (402) HELP NEEDED FOR CAMP LUTHER PETTING ZOO The staff at Camp Luther is inviting any 4-H club or family to share their animals with the visitors during their annual Camp Luther Weekend on June 3 rd from 12:00 4:00 pm. They are open to 4-H members sharing any animals that people of all ages would like to see, pet and learn more about. Examples include: goats, sheep, rabbits, ponies, chickens and small animals. This is a great opportunity for 4-H members to share their animal projects with members of the community and visitors of Camp Luther. BAKE & TAKE March is Bake & Take month, a time when wheat organizations encourage others to bake a wheat good and share it with family, friends, neighbors, coworkers and shut-ins. In honor of the month, the Nebraska Wheat Board (NWB) is again sponsoring recipe cards and stickers for any 4-H groups or other organizations that wish to participate. This year s recipes mini dessert tacos and crockpot cherry chocolate lava cake. Those interested in participating or who have questions can contact the NWB office at (402) or wheat.board@nebraska.gov. There is no cost for the supplies, and no limit on the number that can be requested. Those wishing to preview the recipes before requesting materials can find them listed on our website homepage starting week March 1.

6 Speech Category Rules (Junior, Intermediate, Senior) All speeches must be original and include 4-H as the major component of the speech. Many speakers in the Public Speaking Contest have given speeches in other contests. This is fine; however, previous speeches may not be used verbatim for the 4-H contest. It is okay to use the same ideas from a speech previously delivered in competition, but it must be 4-H related. Enough changes should be made to make that speech new to the speaker and the audience. 4-H public speakers may not use an old speech written by a sibling, other 4-H member, or anyone else. Acknowledge the source of information used in the speech. For example, an article from a magazine may be used for reference, but should not be quoted directly unless you tell the audience your source. Organization: Introduction, body and conclusion. Use of visual aids and props are not allowed. Delivery: Eye contact, timing, gestures and posture. Voice: Clear tones, correct volume and good pronunciation. Dress appropriately. Do not wear costumes or special effect clothing. No team speeches are allowed. 4-H Resource: Public Service Announcement (PSA) Category Rules All PSA s are 60 seconds in length. The state theme for the 2018 Public Service Announcement is "4-H Grows True Leaders and should be incorporated into the PSA. All radio PSA s must promote 4-H and be general enough to be used anywhere in Nebraska at any time of the year. All 4-H PSA s must include the following tag line within the last ten seconds of the PSA: Learn more about Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development Program at 4h.unl.edu. The tag line is included in the 60 second time limit. Sound effects and public domain music may be used. Copyrighted material may not be use. All PSA s must be the original work of the presenter. Contestants may not use PSA s written and provided by the state or national staff. No team PSA s are allowed. Scoring is based on the content of the material and delivery. Appearance and gestures are not judged. For county contest only, PSA s may be read in person or submitted on CD using.wav or.mp3 formats. IF selected to go onto Regional Contest, radio PSA s will be submitted electronically utilizing.wav or.mp3 formats when recording the PSA. 7 4-H Presentation Contest Thursday, April 26, :30 p.m. West Education Center - Central Community College, Columbus GENERAL RULES: All 4-H Presentations should be related to how the 4-H youth is learning about science, healthy living, citizenship and agricultural literacy 4-H Presentations must include an introduction (the "why" portion of the topic), a body (the "show and tell" portion of the topic) and a conclusion/summary (the "what" portion of the topic). All equipment will be provided for the participants. A computer equipped with MS Office 2013, MS Windows Media Player and Adobe Acrobat/Reader will be provided. Presentations may be brought on a CD-ROM, DVD or a USB drive that is PC formatted. Participants may also provide their own computer. Each participant is required to wear the 4-H chevron, 4-H emblem or 4-H shirt. All classes require the presence of the contestant. Only 4-H ers who are years old on January 1, 2018 will be eligible for State Fair. Classes 2-7 are state fair eligible if a purple is received at county contest. 8 Class 1: Show 'n Tell (County Only) Description: A live presentation with a formal talk where youth will use visual aids (such as props, posters, computer-based visuals, handouts, video, etc.) to show and tell others how to do something. Age: 5 7 years old as of January 1 st. Clover Kids Only. Time Limit: up to 5 minutes individual, no team presentation available for this class Class 2, 3, 4: Illustrated Presentation (State Fair Eligible) Description: An Illustrated Presentation involves one or two 4-H ers giving a live presentation with a formal talk where the presenter(s) will use visual aids (such as props, posters, computer-based visuals, handouts, video, etc.) to show and tell others how to do something. Judging Style: Judge views entire presentation and may engage in question and answer session following presentation. Time Limit: 6-8 minutes individual, 8- minutes team Class 5, 6: Teaching (Trade Show Exhibit) Presentation (State Fair Eligible) Description: The Teaching (Trade Show) Exhibit Presentation involves one or two 4-H ers sharing a live, interactive, trade show style presentation where the presenter(s) will continuously engage a constantly-changing/moving audience for 30 minutes by showing and telling them how to do something while answering questions. Resources can be found at Judging Style: Judge may occasionally stop to view presentation, ask questions and observe audience engagement. Time Limit: 30 minute Class 7: Digital Video 4-H Film Fest (State Fair Eligible) Description: The 4-H Film Fest is the display of digital videos that show the recording, reproducing, and broadcasting of moving visual images; digital videos may be created by one or two 4-H ers. Youth will provide a 1-minute oral introduction (name, background/goal of presentation, intended audience, where presentation could be shared, etc.) followed by the showing of their digital video. The following Digital Videos may be entered: o Video Public Service Announcement: A short video that communicates an educational message focused on a cause, activity, or event (Length: 60 seconds). o Narrative: A video that tells a fact or fiction story (Length: 3-5 minutes). o Documentary: A video that presents factual information about a person, event or process (Length: 3-5 minutes). o Animation: A video created by techniques that simulate movement from individual images (Length: 3-5 minutes). Judging Style: Will be judged live during the contest. Time Limit: varies Video Submission Information: The only file formats that will be accepted include:.mpeg,.wmv,.mp4,.mov,.ppt,.pptx, or.avi. Additional Information: The video may include photos, clip art, animation, text, and/or audio/sound. Any freeware/software program may be used to create the presentation. The Special Gardening Project lets 4 H members try their hand at growing unusual vegetables and flowers. The project allows experienced 4 H gardeners to grow something fun, new, and different while letting those new to gardening get their feet wet in this project area. 4 H ers enrolled in the Special Garden Project will: * Receive a packet of Delft Blue Nigella (one packet per youth) in April * Receive a newsletter about: Planting & growing Nigella, Nigella problems & insects Harvesting & using Nigella, Exhibiting flowers * Be able to enter this unique flower or related exhibits at County Fair $3.00 per Family Enroll on line in Special Garden Project by April 2nd.
