The camp will still be held in the Dinklage Building on the Fairgrounds from 8:30 am to Noon. If you are signed up to help, are a counselor or your clover bud is signed up for this camp and can no longer attend, please contact the Office. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate everyone working with us through this change. If you can now participate on June 28 please pre-register by June 21. Regional Speech and Interview Contest Results Several area 4-H ers received awards at the Northeast Regional 4-H Public Speaking and Interview Contests held on May 26, 2016 at the Northeast Community College Lifelong Learning Center, in Norfolk. Contestants earn the opportunity to participate in Regional Public Speaking and PSA competition by qualifying in their age division at the county level. Contestants may compete in one or both categories, Speech and PSA (Public Service Announcement). 4-H members are required to prepare an original speech incorporating some aspect of 4-H in the content. The second category included 4-H members from those age groups recording a 60-second PSA promoting 4-H by using the theme 4-H Grows Confidence The Interview Judging Contest allows young people to practice real-life career preparation skills. This program was created in partnership with Trusted Choice Insurance. The contest involved a set of fictitious job descriptions that the members use to prepare for the process of applying and interviewing for a position. Deb and Larry can assist you in setting up a visit specifically designed to meet your interests. Campus visits can be set up to visit multiple departments or focus on just one department. This is a chance to become familiar with campus and the faculty that you will be interacting with during your post secondary education at UNL. Leaders Corner Funding for Clubs If your club has a special project that needs funding, apply for the Operation Round Up Grant from the Cuming County Public Power District, Cuming County 4-H Council Special Project Fund, and/or the Cuming County 4-H Foundation Kenneth D Lee Memorial Project Fund. Applications are available at the Extension Office and are due July 14 for next round of consideration. Communication & Expressive Arts 2016 State Photography Theme Nebraska Exhibit Print theme for both Unit 2 and Unit 3 will be: Help Us Celebrate the National 4-H Grows Here campaign. Capture photos of people and places that illustrate 4-H growing and thriving in Nebraska! Your photos should tell a story about how 4-H Grows Here in your local community. UNL Admission Application For the academic year, the University will start accepting applications for admission on August 1, This is a month earlier than previous years because they would like to encourage more early applications and enrollment to their new True Red program. Visit: to learn more about the True Red program! Presentation Contest Now is the time to begin working on your presentation contest entries for this year. If you would like assistance in brainstorming topics and ways to present your ideas please contact Deb Schroeder. The Cuming County Presentation Contest will be held July 14 th in the Courthouse meeting room beginning at 4:00 p.m. Deadline for entering the Presentation Contest is July11 th. All presentations given at the 4-H Presentations Contest at the Nebraska State Fair and county fair should relate to how 4-H youth are learning about 4-H science, agricultural literacy, career development/college readiness, citizenship and leadership, or healthy living, through their 4-H experiences or 4-H projects. Enrollment in the project area in which the participant is making a presentation is not required. (Cont. on Page 3)

3 Page 3 Practice Presentation Contest will be held July 11 th from 9:00 a.m. until noon if members would like help in how to present their topic. Deadline for signing up for the practice day is Friday July 8 th. Check out the many different opportunities to give a presentation. You may choose to present individually or as a team. There are two divisions, a junior division and a senior division. Categories in the contest include: Presentation using LCD, slide, video or overhead projector Presentation using posters. Presenter may use posters with a time limit up to 10 minutes for an individual and 15 minutes for a team. A major change to this year s contest is that the multimedia segment of the contest has been changed to the new 4-H Film Fest. Members may check out from the Extension Office, video camera and computer to develop your Film Fest entry. Video-Streaming Volunteers Needed Are you interested in technology? Would you like to test your skills at videotaping and video streaming live events? The Cuming County 4-H Council is looking for volunteers (members and or adults) to volunteer to assist with this project for the 2016 Cuming County Fair. If interested please contact Ellan at the Extension Office sharing the specific parts you are willing to help with and which days of the fair (Thursday, Friday or Saturday) that you will be available to work on the project. This is an exciting opportunity and we look forward to many members and adults getting involved. 4-H Film Fest (Digital Video Pro) Description: Digital Videos are films that display the recording, reproducing, and broadcasting of moving visual images. This competition will be held during the Presentation Contest on July 14. The pre-entry deadline is July 11. During the 4-H Film Fest, youth will provide a 1-minute oral introduction (name, background/goal of presentation, intended audience, where presentation could be shared, etc.) followed by the showing of their Digital Video. The following Digital Videos may be entered in the 4-H Film Fest: Video Public Service Announcement: A short video that communicates an educational message focused on a cause, activity, or event (Length: 60 seconds). Narrative: A video that tells a fact or fiction story (Length: 3-5 minutes). Documentary: A video that presents factual information about a person, event, or process (Length: 3-5 minutes). Animation: A video created by techniques that simulate movement from individual images (Length: 3-5 minutes). Digital Videos entered will be judged live at the 4-H Film Fest event during the Nebraska State Fair. The judging panel will view the videos live and engage in a question and answer session with the video producer(s). Video Submission Information: Transfer your film fest entry to a DVD or jump drive. The only file formats that will be accepted include:.mpeg,.wmv,.mp4,.mov,.ppt,.pptx, or.avi. Contestants are encouraged to bring their own laptop where your entry will play with ease. To insure that your entry will play on the Extension Office equipment please bring it in to do a practice run several days before the county contest. Additional Information: The video may include photos, clip art, animation, text, and/or audio/sound. Any freeware/software program may be used to create the presentation. The Extension Office has a video camera that you may check out to create your Film Fest exhibit with. Family & Consumer Science Complete, Wearable $15 Challenge Outfit A new contest that will be open to all 4-H members boys and girls - the Complete, Wearable $15 Challenge Outfit. The outfit can be for any occasion (examples hunting, sports, dress up, winter, summer, work at home, work at a business, costume, western, horseback riding, etc.) You can shop at garage sales, thrift stores, discount stores, on-line and etc. To compete in the Complete Wearable $15 Challenge members must be enrolled in Attention Shoppers or Shopping Style. Competition will be divided at age 12 on January 1 and there will be both the Fashion Revue and static exhibits for the Consumer Challenge. The Complete Wearable $15 Challenge requires that contestants complete a special form, due July 29, 2016, that is available hard copy from the Extension Office or on line at: Additional details for the Consumer Challenge: (1) participants must model a complete outfit - all pieces of the garment must be purchased; (2) the outfit will be modeled at the fashion show judging and public fashion show to be eligible for premiums; (3) exhibit must be pre-entered for Fashion Revue by completing the $15 Challenge from and (4) judging of the written report is worth 50% of the total score. It is judged on content, completeness, accurate information and neatness. This contest is not State Fair eligible.

4 Page 4 Favorite Foods Revue Attention all 4-H members, you are invited to show off your favorite food at the annual Favorite Foods Revue. Bring your favorite food along with a recipe card and table decorations for the occasion where you plan to serve your food. The judge will visit with you about your display and why you chose this food and occasion. The contest will be held at Wisner Pilger High School on Thursday, June 30th. Displays will be set up from 9:00-9:30 a.m. Participants will draw for their judging order. The contest is divided into three divisions: novice (ages 8-9), junior (ages 10-12) and senior (ages 13 and older). All ages are based as of January 1, All contestants will receive a ribbon and top entries in each division will win a trophy. All contestants are expected to participate in or help with Carousel of Fun when they are not involved in the Favorite Foods Revue judging process. Pre-entry forms and details of the contest are available in the Extension Office, on the website, or from your club leader. Pre-entries are due by Noon on June 27 th. If you need some ideas on how to decorate your table, stop by the Extension Office to view pictures of last year s contest. Cook-Off Contest All 4-H members are invited to participate in all three Cook-Off Contests by entering one exhibit in each of the beef, pork, or poultry. Details of the contests and the pre-entry form are available at the Extension Office or our website. The 2016 Cook-Off Contest will be held on Thursday June 30th, at Wisner Pilger High School. This is the same day as Favorite Foods Revue and Carousel of Fun. All contestants are expected to participate in or help with Carousel of Fun when they are not involved in the Cook-Off Contest. Pre-entries are due by Noon, June 27 th. Contestants from West Point are welcome to ride to and from the contest with Deb Schroeder. Carousel of Fun Add some fun to your summer by jumping in on Carousel of Fun to be held at Wisner Pilger High School. It will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 30th, wrapping up at 2:00 p.m. This event is open to all 4-H members. The cost is $6.50 per person, which will cover the cost of activities and the noon meal. Contestants in Favorite Foods Revue and Cook Off Contests do not have to pay the $6.50 registration fee. Preregistration is due to the Extension Office by June 27th. Fair Book Changes for 2016 There have been several changes and additions to the State Fair 4-H Fair Book this year. Changes in the following areas were made: STEAM Clothing, Home Environment, Culinary Challenge, Photography, Entrepreneurship and Consumer Management/Shopping in Style. To view the State Fair 4-H Fair Book please visit: If you have any questions about these changes please feel free to give us a call. The Cuming County Fair Book will be available soon. Livestock Premise ID Number Needed Swine exhibitors will need a premise ID. Hormel is requiring the premise ID number for all swine marketed to them. If you don't have an ID number please call to get one State Horse Show State 4-H Horse Show at Fonner Park is scheduled for July State Fair Entry Deadline Animal entries are due August 10th by 5:00 pm. (Beef, Sheep, Swine, Rabbit, Poultry, Goat, Dairy, Dog, Companion Animals). Fair Information Fremont 4-H Fair Fremont 4-H Fair will be held July 6-9, 2016 at Christensen Field on the west side of Fremont. All details of the Fremont 4-H Fair are available online by going to cuming.unl.edu, clicking on the Cuming County 4-H tab and selecting Fremont 4-H Fair on the right hand side of the page. Entry cards will be available at the Extension Office. *Volunteers are needed to assist with the static exhibit judging and display. Bring completed entry cards and animal identification sheets and/or registration papers (for registered animals) to the designated check-in table during the designated weigh time or check-in time for each species. Identification sheets and registration papers will be checked. EXHIBITORS of SWINE EXHIBITS NON TERMINAL SHOW: The Fremont 4-H Fair Market Swine show will be a non-terminal show. The exhibitor will be taking home their animal after the market show is over. If you choose to market your animal it is your responsibility. The Fremont 4-H Fair Board will not be marketing swine to sell to Hormel.

6 Page 6 General 4-H Opportunities & News 4-H Food Stand Policy The 4-H Country Kitchen (food stand) in the Watson Pavilion is one of the primary fund raising activities for the 4-H Council who are then able to support all Cuming County 4-H members. This year each club will be will be required to work a shift in the 4-H Country Kitchen at County Fair! Clubs will be responsible for providing 2 adult volunteers and all club members 14 and older on January 1, 2016 will work one 3 hour shift in the 4-H Country Kitchen. Contact the Extension Office to sign up for the time you prefer. Those who do not sign-up by June 19th will be assigned a shift and will be responsible for working that shift. Independent families will be paired up for shifts. Each independent family will be responsible for providing 1 adult and 1-2 youth members. These names should be turned into the Extension Office by July 15 th. The 4-H Council policy is that clubs or families who do not have the adult (s) work their assigned shift in the food stand, will be billed $ This fee is to be paid to the 4-H Council by Oct. 1 st. The H Country Kitchen schedule will be sent to 4-H Organizational Leaders and Independent families after the Drop/Add deadline. Please volunteer to cover the time that your club is assigned. Online Horticulture Judging Contest This year's Horticulture Judging Contest will be available online from June 10th at 8:00 a.m. to June 20th at 8:00 a.m. The contest is composed of three parts: General knowledge questions Plant parts and seed identification Judging portion This contest is open to all youth, as well as adults who would like to participate. Study materials can be found at the State Fair book ( or at the Jr. Horticulture Association ( horticulture-identification-judging-contest/) If you have any questions about this contest, please contact the Extension Office. Tractor Safety Course The 2016 Tractor Safety Trainings will be offered in Nebraska. Any youth 14 or 15 years of age who works on a farm or ranch other than his/her parents is required to be certified through a tractor safety course. Extension Educators and field specialists will teach the 2-day courses. The trainings in this area will be June at the Fairgrounds in Wayne. Cost for the course is $60, which includes all course materials, lunch both days and breaks. Registration is requested a week prior to class. For details or to register, contact: Nebraska Extension Office in Wayne, H Silent Auction Items Needed In order to continue the success of the Cuming County 4-H program we need your help with our annual Silent Auction. Our goals is to raise $2000 this year. The 4-H Council is asking each 4-H club as well as any family or individual to donate items which will be put on a silent auction at the County Fair. Examples of items to donate or make could be: a first aid kit, a box of fitting and grooming supplies, basket of sewing supplies, a grocery basket, a voucher for a pair of 4-H members to work for a day, club projects like pillows, tie blankets, or purses. No gift certificates please. Remember all 4-H members will benefit from this money-making event. Science Saturday s at Raising Nebraska Celebrate the International Year of the Pulse through Science Saturdays, a free and open to the public event, at Raising Nebraska located on the State Fairgrounds in Grand Island, NE. Science Saturday occurs the second Saturday of every month with the facility open from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The highlighted program consists of an educational, interactive and fun 25 minute session. 7 Page 7 3rd Annual Youth Crop Scouting Competition Join youth on Aug. 2 at the ARDC for the Annual Youth Crop Scouting Competition! Youth will learn how to scout soybeans and corn, obtain knowledge helpful for potential careers and network with University and industry professionals. The deadline to register for the contest is July 15. Download an entry form at: youth. For more information, contact Brandy Vandewalle at Culinary Challenge The 2016 Culinary Challenge will be held at the Nebraska State Fair on August 27. In this contest, youth will demonstrate healthy decision making through nutrition, menu planning, food preparation and food safety. This contest is open to 4-H youth, years as of Jan. 1, Youth must be enrolled in a Foods & Nutrition project. Youth can register in teams of 2 and the fee is $5 per 4-H er.
