Shawnee County 4-H A G E NT REPORT Hello 4-H Families! I hope everyone is enjoying this fun back to school time when youth meet new teachers, make new friends and discover new interests. It is an exciting time for students! Another exciting time is around the corner for 4-H. The Kansas State Fair is Sept. 11 th -20 th in Hutchinson. The pre-entries for Shawnee County have been submitted as well as our State Fair Volunteer list. We will notify all families via when tickets, parking hang tags and entry cards are received. If we are transporting entries for you please do not bring them to the office until Sept. 8 th -10 th. There is more information about that process in this Chatterbox. Another thing to get on your calendar is 4-H Achievement Night! Achievement Night is for all members to be recognized for their hard work for the H year. Our program will be November 14 th at Washburn Rural High School. It is an evening program and you will receive a formal invite in the mail closer to the event. To encourage youth to submit record books and to attend our program Events Council is sponsoring door prizes this year. The prizes will be a Kindle Fire, a Lego Minecraft Set and a bike! The door prize winners will be determined by a drawing at the conclusion of the program. You have three ways to get your name into the drawing. 1.) Attend Achievement Night, you will get one entry just for coming. (You must be present to win a prize.) 2.) Submit a non-competitive record book. Not only will this get you a Gold Award at Achievement Night but it is good for one more entry into the prize drawing. (You can do several noncompetitive record books but you will only get one entry.) 3.) Submit a competitive record book. These books are judged on the county level and will also get you into the prize drawing. (You can do several competitive record books but you will only get one entry into the drawing.) You can do all three of these things for a total of 3 chances at the door prizes. Each 4-H er will only be allowed to win one prize. So mark your calendar and ask your club leader when record books are due! There is also more information about record books in this chatterbox! ~Candis

Clothing items should be placed in dry cleaning bags. Geology and Entomology boxes should be packed in the following manner: Cover the top with cardboard, foam core or a carpet sample and secure with heavy string. Avoid putting boxes inside another box if at all possible. Also make sure to have your entry cards completely filled out and secured to your project. You will get the entry cards at the office when you drop off. If you are taking your own exhibit let us know so we can mail entry cards to you. Transportation for animals, large woodwork, large electric, large rockets or any open class exhibits is your responsibility. 7 Shawnee County Page 7 Club News Ambassadors Representing Shawnee County 4-H at the Rebound Physical Therapy Back to School was Megan Essman, Thomas Schulz, and Robert Schulz. We set up a table with the question of Do you have to live on a farm, have lots of land, or own an animal to be in 4-H? As you all know the answer is No anyone can be in 4-H. Many Topeka kids learned that answer as we talked with kids at this event. We shared project stickers as reminders about various projects that can be done in 4-H, displayed some projects like Photography, Construction Zone, and Geology/Lapidary that can be done by kids anywhere. We also let them know about the 4-H Sewing Group and the upcoming Fall Kick Off Event we are putting on October 4th at the Reynolds Lodge at Lake Shawnee, from 2-4pm. We also wanted to thank our graduating Seniors this year. Pictured below from left to right are; Chelsey Johnston, Kayla Hernandez; Thomas Schulz and Tony Pruitt. You all have been wonderful to work with and done some amazing things! Best Wishes! Events Council At the Events Council Meeting on Thursday, August 13th, we opened nominations for a new Vice President and elected Leah Hudson of Rossville Rustlers 4-H Club to finish out the year. Congratulations Leah! We also discussed the upcoming Achievement Night on November 14th and instead of a pie in the face for one of the Events Council Executive members, we decided to do something different this year. We are going to get some door prizes that will be given away at the end of the Achievement Night Program by a drawing of names. Your name goes in the selection box if you have turned in a Competitive Record Book, a Non-Competitive Record Book, and by attending Achievement Night for a total of 3 chances at the door prize drawings.
