October 1 st marks the beginning of the H year. I m looking forward to the New Year and working with all of our families to accomplish their objectives for this 4-H year. Have your 4-H ers set their goals yet? It is much easier to set project goals at the beginning of the year than any other time, AND it helps you start on your new record books! New things for the H year: Health Participation Forms This year families will be filling out their Health Participation Forms on 4-H online. 4-H enrollment will still be on 4-H online this year. These systems will be open for enrollment on October 1 st. Please make sure to go back in and check your youth s projects after you log out. Sometimes a box that was checked doesn t get saved. The program will be November 14 th at Washburn Rural High School doors open at 6pm and the program will start at 6:30pm. You will receive a formal invite in the mail if you were enrolled in 4-H online for the year. New members in Oct are invited to come as well! To encourage youth to submit record books and to attend the program Events Council is sponsoring door prizes this year. The prizes will be a Kindle Fire, a Lego Minecraft Set and a bike! The door prize winners will be determined by a drawing at the conclusion of the program. You have three ways to get your name into the drawing. 1.) Attend Achievement Night, you will get one entry just for coming. (You must be present to win a prize) 2.) Submit a non-competitive record book. Not only will this get you a Gold Award at Achievement Night but it is good for one more entry into the prize drawing. (You can do several non-competitive record books but you will still only get one entry) 3.) Submit a competitive record book. These books are judged on the county level and will also get you into the prize drawing. (You can do several competitive record books but you will only get one entry into the drawing.) You can do all three of these things for a total of 3 chances at the door prizes. Each 4-H er will only be allowed to win one prize. I m looking forward to seeing all of you on Nov. 14 th. There will be snacks and a dance after the program. Kansas 4-H Leadership Weekend The Kansas Youth Leadership Forum (KYLF) and the Kansas Volunteer Forum information are on the 4-H online CVent Registration System and are ready for you and your 4-H members and volunteers to register. The Forums will be held November 20-22, 2015 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. KYLF is for youth ages before January 1, 2016 and KVF is for all Kansas 4-H Volunteers. KYLF will feature leadership workshops, Youth Council Elections, and opportunities to learn and have fun. The Kansas 4-H Volunteer forum will feature training from the Kansas Leadership Center. This year participants in both forums will register through the same system. Registration deadline is October 15, 2015 for both events. Click here for the link to the state registration site. KYLF Scholarships Thanks to Mid-Kansas Co-op and Land O Lakes Corporation Shawnee County has $1,000 in scholarship money for Kansas Youth Leadership Forum! At the close of registration we will take the number of youth registered from our county and divide the $1,000 scholarships and then bill the balance to the youth. KYLF is Nov. 20 th (evening) through Nov. 22 nd. and is held at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Youth get to hear speakers and take workshops on leadership. They also meet other 4-H youth from across the state. Youth ages are invited to attend. The cost before scholarship dollars are applied is $200 per person. I really hope youth take advantage of the scholarships our youth have been offered to go to this leadership weekend! 2016 Kansas 4-H Ambassador Training News The Kansas 4-H Ambassador Action team is a group of 4-H members, volunteer leaders, and Extension staff enthusiasts who give leadership and guidance to presenting the annual Kansas 4-H Ambassador Training. 5 Shawnee County Page 5 Club News Officer Induction and a Picnic to Boot! On September 22, 2015, Deer Trail had a picnic in Gage Park to kick off the new 4-H year. Recreation committee members led a game of capture the flag and a relay race. We then ate all of the hotdogs and hamburgers (grilled by Mr. Shawn Black and Mr. Louis Funk) we could hold! Our new officers, as listed in the September Chatterbox, were officially inducted during a ceremony led by Kendra Stover. It was a sweet night as she applied a certain type of candy to the duties of each office. A Mr. Goodbar represented the office of the President because the President is the leader of the club, giving guidance and direction to members. The Vice President received a Crunch bar because, if the President is absent, the VP will have to take over in a crunch! The Second Vice President received Smarties because this office is responsible for knowing and understanding parliamentary procedure and ensuring that the meeting is run according to Robert s Rules of Order. The Secretary received Rolos because he will have to take roll at every meeting, and the Treasurer got a Payday because he is in charge of all of the money for the club. Members received packages of M&M s and Skittles because they add so much color to our meetings. We had a lot of fun and look forward to what our new leaders will bring to the club in the coming year! ~Blythe Landon, Reporter Shawnee Riders 4-H Club Members from left to right: Back row: Sam Shonka, Hailie Culp, Haley Tillery, Merideth Burgess, Calista Covel.
