Webster County fair books and fair entry forms will be distributed during May club meetings. Please review the fair book carefully for class rules, schedules, and basic fair information. Fair entries are due to the office by June 12 at 4:30 p.m. Late entries will not be accepted. Please tr y to tur n them in sooner than later. 2 Club Leaders Please distribute packets with fair books to your 4-H families during your May meetings. Club pictures will be used in fair promotional materials. Please or text photos to Lindsay by May 31. Also, it is time for clubs to donate to the 4-H ers for 4-H program. There is a recommendation of $3 per member, but clubs may decide on the amount they choose to give. Donations need to be turned into to Lindsay by May 31. Thank you to those clubs who have already donated! Conference Orientation & County Council Orientation 4-H members attending Youth Conference on June need to attend orientation on June 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Webster County Fairgrounds. County council orientation for enrollment year to follow. Annual Volunteer Training Thank you to our club and project leaders for attending the annual volunteer training in March. Those who could not make it to the training must complete the online option by May 31. Contact Lindsay with any questions. Aerospace Aerospace project members will meet on Sunday, May 20 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Webster County Fairgrounds Auditorium. Demonstration of launch safety procedures and first launch for safety approval will occur. Cat Project Cat project members will not meet in May. Their next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 20 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Extension Office. Dog Project Dog project practices are scheduled for Tuesday, May 8 and Tuesday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the east side of the auditorium at the fairgrounds. Please bring dogs to this meeting. If you have any questions, please call Jennie Dencklau at , Katie Schelle at , or Emily Dencklau at Goat Project Goat project members are invited to a hands on clinic on June 2 at 1:00 p.m. at the Walrod Farm. If any questions please contact Heather Stewart or Katie Walrod at Horse Project Horse project members will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, May 10, May 17, May 24, and May 31 at the Webster County Fairgrounds Arena. Poultry Poultry project will meet on Wednesday, May 23 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the east auditorium at the fairgrounds. If you have any questions, please contact Laura Ross at Rabbit Project members have a meeting on Wednesday, May 23 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the east auditorium at the Fairgrounds. Topics include fair rules, how to handle heat and stress at the fair, showmanship, and identifying rabbits. Shotgun Discipline Shotgun discipline starts in May! Practices will be held on Sunday, May 6 and Sunday, May 20 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Practices are held at Iowa Central s Trap Range (located west of Tom Thumb at 2091 Richmill Road). To help cover the costs of clay targets and shot shells, there will be a $50 fee to participate in the program. Please bring payment to the first practice. Please contact Lindsay before the first practice if interested in this project area. Solider Garden Project The next Soldier Garden Project meeting will be Saturday, May 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the garden. Rain date will be Sunday, May 13 at 2:00 p.m. Livestock ID s Due May 15 All 4-H members exhibiting breeding sheep, dog, cat, horse, breeding beef, bucket bottle, feeder calf, and swine need to ID their animals in 4-H Online by May 15 at 11:59 p.m. A help sheet is available on your 4-H Online account if you need assistance. Members can start the ID process now. Please do not wait until the last minute. Bring any ID questions to Janel in the office during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or her at janels@iastate.edu. YQCA Certification Reminder all beef, bucket botte, swine, sheep, dairy cattle, dairy goat, meat goat, rabbit, and poultry 4-H exhibitors are required to be YQCA certified by June 1 to exhibit at the county fair and State Fair. 3 Sheep & Goat Weigh-In A total of 117 sheep and 16 goats were weighed in at the Fairgrounds on April 28. Thank you to those who helped with the weigh-in: Brad Oeltjenbruns, Owen Oeltjenbruns, Jim Rees, Kerry Rees, Scott Spangler, Amie Kallunsrud, Heather Stewart, and Katie Walrod. 4-H Legislative Day On March 28, nine Webster County 4-H members traveled to Des Moines for the annual 4-H Legislative Day trip. The group started the day with a tour of the Iowa Hall of Pride, lunch at Spaghetti Works, a tour of the Iowa Capitol, followed by a visit with Senator Tim Kraayenbrink and Page Haley Ledford. Webster County 4-H members also enjoyed spending the day with 4-H ers from Hardin and Hamilton counties too. Thank you to chaperones, Sid Bodholdt and Audra Fisher. 4-H ers from Webster County who attended included: Isabelle Berger, Morgan Bodholdt, Scott Boro, Katie Delaney, Sidney Lowry, Hope Miller, Mike Miller, Alyssa Speck, and Chloe Speck Omaha Zoo Trip 4-H members from Hamilton, Hardin, Humboldt, Webster, and Wright Counties explored the Omaha Zoo on April 6-7. The trip provided memorable experiences such as a night hike, guided tour, IMAX movie along with meeting 4-H members from other counties. Those selected from Webster County to attend the trip included: Isabelle Berger, Alyssa Speck, Emma Sytsma, Paige Weiland, Silvia Heldorfer, Brylie Butrick, Mike Miller, Nathan Beekman, Sylvia Hess, Ellie Driscoll, Harley Eckert, and Morgan Bodholdt. Thank you to Guy Miller for chaperoning! 4-H Recognition 4-H members participated in the State 4-H recognition interview process on March 24 at Iowa State University. Those selected for a state award will be recognized at the Iowa State Youth Conference during closing ceremonies on Thursday, June 28. Congratulations to our members selected for the following: State 4-H Award Reagan Black (leadership) & Morgan Border (leadership) Shooting Sports Ambassador: Alexis Stuhrenberg State Council Jarrett Loseke Archery Tournament 4-H members from Webster County competed in the 9 th annual North Iowa 4-H Archery Tournament on Sunday, April 8 in Mason City. Congratulations to the following: Sasha Hess- 1st place in Junior Traditional Class Mike Miller- 7th place in Intermediate Compound Class Mykenzie Stuhrenberg- 1st place in Intermediate Traditional Class Mykaela Stuhrenberg- 2nd place in Intermediate Traditional Class Hope Miller- 3rd place in Intermediate Traditional Class Alexis Stuhrenberg- 2nd place in Senior Compound Class Zachary Popp- 3rd place in Senior Compound Class Jake Miller- 1st place in Senior Freestyle Class Jeannie Boro- 2nd place in Senior Freestyle Class State 4-H Youth Conference Every June, almost 900 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for three days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. This year youth conference will be held on June Karrigan Mentzer, Haley Ledford, and Brooklin Border, State 4-H Council members from Webster County, have been working hard to plan this exciting event with other State Council members. Youth who have completed 8th grade are eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! Regular registration for a fee of $180 closes on June 1 with late registration for $200 available until June 11. The Webster County 4-H Foundation will pay $80 of the registration fee for those who attended county interviews. Payment for registration is handled through the Webster County Extension Office and is due by the June 1 registration deadline. 4 Fair T-Shirts Fair t-shirts can be ordered through your club for $15 each and must be pre-paid for. Club leaders will submit final t-shirt orders to the office by June 12. These shirts just for fun and not allowed to be worn when your 4-H er is exhibiting at the fair. Wildlife Adventure Camp When: June 11 th 13 th from 9:00 a.m. Noon Who: Completed 4 th 6 th Graders What: Youth will spend their time outdoors learning about wildlife while exploring the county parks by hiking, fishing, canoeing, bird watching, and much more! Where: Kennedy Park (1415 Nelson Ave, Fort Dodge, IA 50501) at the Playscape Cost: $10 4-H members / $15 Non 4-H members RSVP: Monday, June 4 th to the Webster County Extension Office. Clover Kids Cooking Camp When: June 25 th 27 th from 9:00 a.m. Noon Who: Completed 2nd-3rd Graders What: During this day camp, youth will have the opportunity to learns the basic of cooking (measuring, food science, etc.) while baking fun and delicious recipes. Where: Webster County Fairgrounds Old Hwy 169, Fort Dodge Cost: $15 4-H members / $20 Non 4-H members RSVP: Friday, June 15 th to the Webster County Extension Office. Space is limited! Webster County Fair Information The 2018 Webster County Fair is July County Council and Youth Committee selected the fair theme to be Battle of the Clubs. Battle of the Clubs allows you to show your heart and greater loyalty to your club. Each club should design a mascot based on their club name and decorate their club booth accordingly. Like the Webster County Fairgrounds Facebook page and you will be notified of all events occurring at this year s fair The Fair planning committee has been working hard to plan new and exciting events including a carnival, bands, hypnotist, rock climbing wall, and much more! Check out the map included in the newsletter for more details on a new layout and flow of traffic. To make the fair run smoothly, there are several volunteer opportunities available for the different events.
