February 2013 The Nautilus The Official News Letter of New Orleans Yacht Club 2012 News in brief The Nautilus returns After a year s break, the Nautilus is back in print. We have lots of news and to share with you, including several upcoming attractions at New Orleans Yacht Club. Over the course of 2012, NOYC hosted a number of events, on and off the water. Last year saw the continued success of Mardi Gras Race Week, a regatta which has quickly grown to be a major One- Design event. In 2012, 10 classes of boats registered for the One-Design portion of the regatta, and the 2013 regatta looks set to repeat this trend. The regatta attracts a national following, and this year we will host visitors from as far away as Chicago and Ohio. Of course, an event such as this takes a great deal of support, and thanks go to the many volunteers across the sailing community that made this event such a success. If you do not plan on sailing in the regatta, but would like to be involved, please consider volunteering. Please contact Greg Rubin or Gail Fraser if you are interested. The 2012 racing season finished with two races in which NOYC sailors placed. In October, the Lake Pontchartrain Racing Circuit (LPRC) was a hard-fought three day event that featured a wet and cold trip across the lake followed by a day of heavy winds. John Lee s Lesson #1 helmed by Ryan Bancroft and featuring a number of NOYC Members finished second overall in Spinnaker A division, followed by Dr. Alan Robson s Footloose Too in third place. NOYC sailors also fared well in the Allstate Sugarbowl PHRF race in December. Ryan Bancroft and crew sailed Defiance to a second place finish in Spinnaker A, finishing behind Chris Wientjes and his newly christened Melges 32, Stormvogel. In Non- Spinnaker B, Louis Lambou and the crew of Koala took the first place trophy, followed closely by Commodore Rickey Smith and his crew on board Easterly III. Off the water, New Orleans Yacht Club continues to provide great entertainment. In 2012 the club hosted a second series of Top Chef competitions, in which club members cooked a three course dinner, so members were treated to a number of very memorable meals. Thanks to Buzzy McFerrin for organizing the events, to all those who competed, and of course to the members who brought their appetites and voting cards. In the coming months, Entertainment Committee Chair Extraordinaire Diana Daigle and her team have assembled a number of events that are sure to provide members with some interesting memories. Among these is a St Patrick s Day Kickoff evening, with Irish Coffees and Desserts. March 29 marks Chef Louis Lambou s famous Oyster Night, an event that is always well-attended, so please make your bookings soon. This will be followed on March 30 by the NOYC Children s Easter Egg Hunt. Please see Page 10 for a list of upcoming events. Finally, we hope that you will contribute to future issues of the Nautilus. Please send details of your news that you would like to see printed to nautilus@noyc.org. We hope that you will look forward to another year of great racing and we look forward to seeing you around your Club in Fair winds and following seas and long may your big jib draw!" 1

The Nautilus Commodore s Comments First, a profound personal thank you to so many of you who have not only offered kind words of support and encouragement to me and to the new Board, but more importantly, have come forward to volunteer to Chair and/or work on the myriad committees that keep the Club running. As many of you know, the diesel engine on N.O.Y.C. II was burning more oil than fuel, and quotes for a new engine were extremely costly. Nick Hajdu, with the help of Rickey Smith and others, moved the engine to Rudy Smith s shop and with mammoth amounts of volunteer labor, Nick with the help of Rickey, R. J. Trejo, Roy Ross, Elliott Brett Morgan Mayberry and Brent Barnett are rebuilding the existing engine for pennies on the dollar compared to the cost of a new engine! Nick assures me that the new engine will still be running fine when I am not. (I would have chosen a different analogy.) Diana Daigle is putting together a great Entertainment Committee. As the heart of the social side of the Club, I am sure the Committee would welcome additional volunteers. Ellen Artopoeus, Jack Woynowski, and a crew of intrepid explorers are taking on the remaking of the Junior Room, showers, etc. I am going to be looking for a couple of hands to help on sprucing up the front balcony of the Club in the next few weeks. As many of you know, Dave Erwin, who has overseen NOYC.org with John Wolf for many years, is ready for a break. His tireless efforts to provide a content rich web site we could all be proud of will be missed. Besides having depth on the race course, we have found some volunteers with the computer skills to keep the website up and running. Thanks to Debbie Huntsman, Rob Stufflebeam, Dan Rubin and Buzzy McFerrin for taking on this task with John. Speaking of Racing, Mardi Gras Race Week One Design will be February and PHRF will be February This is a great opportunity to showcase the Club to the many racers and visitors. Running the event successfully requires enormous amounts of volunteer time. Check with Greg Rubin, Gail Fraser or Buzzy if you can contribute. As you know, yacht clubs around the country have faced challenges in attracting and retaining members. Several members have shared with me some interesting and innovative ideas of ways to recruit new members. Anyone interested in being part of that team, please contact me (jfenlaw@bellsouth.net). Finally, thank you, Fiona, for taking on the task of resurrecting the Nautilus. [You re welcome! Fiona] In addition to another source to keep everyone informed of upcoming events and I hope acknowledge the efforts of our volunteers, it can be a handy tool to explain who we are and what we do to new or prospective members. Regards, Jay Fenerty, Commodore. January 31, 2013 Save Time and Money! You can save time and money by going to billing! Electing to receive your bills via reduces waste and saves money that can be used for member benefits. If you do not already receive your bill via , please consider making the switch today. Please Buzzy McFerrin at buzzy@noyc.org 2

February 2013 Obituaries Phil Pizzeck Early on Saturday December 29, 2012, Phil Pizzeck died in the home where he and Debbie Waguespack shared their lives in River Ridge. Phil touched so many of us so deeply that we now feel that there is a hole in our lives. Phil was born and raised in the Gentilly area of New Orleans. He had an early attraction to the water and sailing. His first boat was a styrofoam Sea Snark that he and one of his diaper buddies Larry Pasquale Schedler would sail on Bayou St. John. Many years later he became enamored of the Rhodes 19. The critical event was an evening sail with long-time friend L.G. Sullivan They sailed from West End to the casino boat in the Miss Amy and on the return sail a squall surprised them. In the high wind and seas that little boat held up beautifully. Phil was sold. A few years later Phil learned that L.G. had agreed to sell Miss Amy and he pleaded with L.G. to sell it to him. Phil now had his first real boat and set about the task of rebuilding her. Five years later, with the assistance of Gary Gizmo Jenkins and many others, he was satisfied with his effort and he splashed Rhode Hawg. Rhode Hawg was actively campaigned on Lake Ponchartrain, the Gulf coast and even Marblehead, MA primarily with John Wolf, Barry Hurlburt and Tirza T Dabdoub. As a result of health problems, Phil had not raced his R19 in about 2 years, but was excited about getting back in the game and performing well in the 2013 Nationals to be held in New Orleans. In addition to racing his own boat, Phil crewed on several other local PHRF boats, including Siren, Easterly 3, Juggernaut, Blueprint, Fidgety and Heavy Water. With regard to Heavy Water, he was essentially a partner with Barry FBO Hurlburt. Besides keeping the boat working, he was an Patrick Albert Patrick Albert of Valrico, FL passed away peacefully on January 1, Born June 16, 1961 in New Orleans, Patrick graduated from St. Paul's Catholic High School in Covington and received a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Loyola University. Patrick was an avid member of Theta Xi Fraternity, the Beta Xi chapter at UNO where he helped conduct the annual 'Pole Sit' for the benefit of charity. He was a lifetime member of New Orleans Yacht Club where he engaged in his second love; racing sailboats. He assisted with relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina and organizational tour d force when it came to big events like LPRC or Race to the Coast. The between him and crew could be almost overwhelming at times. Phil was also a major contributor to the sailing program at New Orleans Yacht Club where he, John Wolf and Vernon Peewee Sheldon were Race Committee for more races than most of us can imagine. His reputation as a quality PRO earned him several invitations to run out of town regattas. Phil was also stubborn as the day is long, passionate about those things he cared about and one of the funniest story tellers you would ever want to meet. If you didn t have the pleasure of listening to him describe his limo driving days, you really missed out. On Saturday January 12 a memorial service was held at NOYC. As a testament to how many people Phil had an impact on hundreds turned up to honor his life and share stories. You will be missed Phil Hello Lady! Pizzeck! Barry Hulburt then relocated to Valrico, FL where he was privileged to work as director of maintenance for St. Stephen Church. There he joined the Men's Club and Knights of Columbus and shared his New Orleans style cooking at the Spring Jubilees & Lenten fish fries. On Nov. 25, 2012 Patrick received the St. Jude's Award, for volunteering, from the Diocese of St. Petersburg. Patrick is survived by his first love, his wife of 25 years, Sylvia and their four sons; Nathan, Kevin, Brian and Jason. A memorial service will be held in New Orleans in the summer of

The Nautilus Introducing the Board of 2013 The election in 2012 brought some new faces to the Board for Filling new positions for this year are: Jay Fenerty (Commodore), Ellen Artopoeus (Vice Commodore), Jay Smith (Rear Commodore), Elliott Brett (Member at Large), Greg Rubin (Member at Large) and Jessica Quinn (Member at Large). After completing two terms of Commodore, Rickey Smith is retained on the board as Past Commodore, leaving big shoes to fill. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Rickey for all his efforts to keep the club running so well. A full list of officers and committee chairs can be found on Page 14. The 2013 Board. From left to right: Elliott Brett, Jay Smith, Dan Rubin, Greg Rubin, Commodore Jay Fenerty, Commodore Rickey Smith, Fiona Inglis, Rudy Smith, Ellen Artopoeus. Many of these members bring with them significant sailing and boat handling experience which we are sure will be an invaluable asset to the club. We hope that each enjoys taking part in the many activities that NOYC has to offer. Boat of the Year NOYC has a new Boat of the Year trophy, kindly donated by Kid Falcone. The 2012 Boat of the Year is Pier Pressure, with Koala taking second place, and Wind Shift rounding out the top three in a closely fought race. The Boat of the Year award is based on performance in NOYC-sponsored races (full series scores). Congratulations to all for their achievements throughout the year. In 2013, the Boat of the Year trophy will be awarded based on the US Sailing High Point Percentage Scoring System. 4

February 2013 Report from the Gulf Yachting Association Winter Meeting The GYA Winter Meeting was held at Fairhope Yacht Club 12 and 13 January. New Orleans Yacht Club was well represented by several officers and members, who attended an array of interesting workshop sessions. Benz Faget gave some great ideas regarding the Capdevielle Boat Replacement, and was re-elected to the Offshore Council. Vice-Commodore Ellen Artopoeus represented the club at the Sunday morning Board of Directors Meeting. There were several points of note. First, The GYA Commodore will be appointing a new Ad Hoc committee to continue the progress towards the new Capdevielle boat. There are many things to consider, and no single boat design is a clear frontrunner at this point. Second, the 2013 Challenge Cup will be reverting back to the 2011 ratings bands, dispelling the Sport/Displacement Bands that were used in The regatta will be held in Gulfport. A strong GYA representation is expected at the upcoming Mardi Gras Race Week, the first GYA Regatta of the New Year. Ashley Sukalski, Fort Walton, Florida Sailing Camp introduces young sailors to the sport For the last two years, New Orleans Yacht Club has held sailing camps for young sailors interested in getting out on the water. In 2012, the Club hosted 30 students, teaching them various skills including instruction in basic boat handling and boating safety. The sailing camps were a great hit, and this year, the Club plans to host another two sailing camps. Sailing instruction is provided by experienced instructors with US Sailing certificate, first aid and CPR training. On the water instruction is performed in Optimist and Flying Scot boats. Sailing camp is open to all children ages 7-14, and costs $350 per participant, including lunch. The camp runs Monday through Friday, from 9am to 3pm. Participants must be able to pass a swim test, and must provide a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device. If you are interested in taking part in sailing camp this coming summer, please contact NOYC Manager Buzzy at buzzy@noyc.org for precise dates and details. Sailing Camp participants learn how to right the boat during capsize drill. 5

February 2013 Club Members work to rebuild NOYCII Engine At the end of the last sailing season, it became apparent that the committee boat, NOYCII, was suffering from engine problems. Saving the Club the expense of a replacement engine, several members have been working almost round the clock to rebuild the engine in time for the upcoming racing season. Our thanks are extended to Commodore Rickey Smith, Nick Haidju, Mo Mayberry, Roy Ross, RJ Trejo and Brian Weir, each of whom has donated many hours of hard work to rebuild the engine for the Race Committee Boat NOYCII in time for Mardi Gras Raceweek. If you see them at the Club, please thank them for their efforts in completing this monumental task. Nick Haidju leads a crew of workers to restore the NOYCII engine to its former glory 7

The Nautilus Top Chef comes to the New Orleans Yacht Club Inspired by our own resident chef, Buzzy McFerrin, the NOYC top Chef brought out the culinary instincts of several of our members. Armed with the obligatory knives and a tight budget, contestants lined up to cater their three-course specialties for a group of hungry members. Guests were asked to evaluate dishes on a number of categories, including appearance, flavor, texture and originality, as well as the timeliness of serving. Proving that he is not just a pretty face nor a one track pony, Top Chef 2012 was won by none other than Commodore Rickey Smith, successfully defending his 2011 title with his Crawfish Fettucini. The Second Place spot was won by Lisa Schully and Rob Stufflebeam, who served up Pork Ribs, and Third Place went to Jack Woynowski for his braised pork cutlet. Below are the full menus of the winners and other participants, in order of participation. If you have interest in taking part in future dining events, please check with Buzzy for details and dates. Thanks to all those who laid their culinary experience on the line, and to those who gave up a couple of inches of their waistline to judge these delightful meals.
