1 Selecting a Research Topic and Preparing its Synopsis: Current Techniques and Means for the Researchers in Islamic Studies Abstract There is ever-growing number of MS and PhD students along with general researchers in Pakistan who are in need of improved rules, principles, and sources to choose a researchable topic and prepare its logical synopsis in the vast area of Islamic Studies. Although there are authors who have written a number of books on research methodology in Urdu language, most of them address the researchers in Urdu language and literature. There are a few books written to guide the researchers in Islamic Studies. However, they neither cover the needs of current community of researchers nor they point out the support of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan for the researches. After reviewing the available literature and noting many deficiencies in the books of research methodology in Urdu language, this paper contributes to fill the gap to some extent. To save the time of the researchers in choosing a relevant topic, to enable them to start their work without any serious problem and to play their role in the development of the nation, this paper addresses three basic questions. They are: What are the current and researchable fields and areas in the vast discipline of Islamic Studies? What are the most logical steps and stages in choosing a researchable top in any specialization of Islamic Studies? How to write an acceptable synopsis for research in Islamic Studies? In this way, this paper is divided into three parts. In the first part, it points out various areas and fields of research; in the second part, it explores the steps, means and ways to choose an appropriate topic; and inthe third part, it points out the latest sources of data provided by HEC, HEC-approved supervisors and journals, magazines in Urdu and Arabic languages, and online libraries in Urdu and Arabic languages. In general, this paper is constructive, suggestive and instructive. 83
