STORM RIDERS CHAPTER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY H.O.G. 1 October 2015
By Rick Marinelli, Director Hello Storm Riders! Another Oklahoma State H.O.G. Rally has come and gone. The rally coordinator, Donna Hingtgen and her staff, moved up the date this year by about a month, and the weather was great. The guided rides were fun with lots of twisties and great routes. I am sad to say that we did have two Storm Riders, Tom Burke and Jina Myers, go down Friday afternoon, on 2 different rides. Tom had a broken collar bone and some cracked ribs. They first took him to Poteau and then medi-flighted him to Tulsa. He was released from the hospital on Sunday and is home recovering. Jina was treated in McAlester then released. She had some road rash and then had knee surgery last week. Let s keep praying that they have a speedy recovery and get back on two wheels as soon as they can. When Ira Frame called and told me about these two accidents, I got off the phone and called the best Harley Davidson dealership in the world and talked to Jesse Melton. I filled him in on what happened, I asked him if they could go down and pick the two bikes up, he said, I don't know why not, but I have to check with Kyle and see if they have time and if the truck is available Saturday morning and I will let you know. Within an hour I got a call back from Jesse telling me they would be leaving first thing Saturday morning to pick the bikes up. I hope that all of you Storm Riders appreciate everything that Jesse and his staff does for our chapter. He supports us 110 percent. There are many H.O.G chapters that don't even talk to their dealership s General Manager. I would like to thank you, Jesse, for everything that you do for YOUR Storm Riders H.O.G Chapter and how much I enjoy working with you and your staff. We are still trying to fill officer positions for the 2016 year. If you have ever thought about being a chapter officer, this is the year. We have some great officers that have been in their positions for several years, who are ready to just be members and enjoy riding the best built motorcycle in the world Harley-Davidson. That is why we bought them, isn't it? 3 Bear Tracks by Jeff Spitzer, Activities Officer - From Your Computer : Greetings, Storm Riders! Welcome to the fall riding season! Time to clean those leathers up and go see the fall foliage! The chapter will be doing a Toy Drive in November to raise donations to support Moore Fire Department s Santa Express. I challenge each of you to not only donate one new, unwrapped $10.00 toy per individual chapter member, but to encourage as many friends & co-workers to either give you their donation to bring in, or they can bring in their own donations to Fort Thunder. There will be a Donation Box in the foyer of Fort Thunder H-D from Monday November 2nd until the evening of Thursday, November 12th. If you cannot make it over to FTHD, I will also take donations at the chapter meeting on Wednesday, November 11th. The Weekly e-newsletter lists chapter rides, meetings and activities through the end of the year. It also tells how to get notifications pushed to your facebook newsfeed, how to sign up for text alerts, and how to find our Storm Riders' web page. - Bear Chapter Meeting September 9 3
Breakfast Ride to Gloria s Kitchen, Hinton, August 29 It seemed like fall was in the air, even though the calendar said it was still August; a perfect day for a ride through the country to eat breakfast with friends! Thirteen Storm Riders on 13 bikes met at OnCue at 7 am on a Saturday morning. We rode state Hiways 37 and 152 on a 65 mile route to Hinton, OK. was almost taken out by a combine that was hogging the entire road! Fortunately, he saw us in time to get over just enough for our bikes to get past him. Man, you need to watch out for those farmers! Gloria s Kitchen was busy that day and there must have been some problem in the kitchen, because it took us nearly an hour to get our food. But It was Vicki Wheeler s very first group ride on her own bike and she did a terrific job! Also noteworthy is the fact that Neil Myers, better half of Jina Myers (Moonflower) was able to ride with us. It was his first group ride after an accident last year. Coming out of a curve on the twisty leg of Hwy 37 between Cogar and Hinton, the whole group when it did come, it was fabulous. It was home cooking at its country best! I think it is worth a return trip in spite of the wait. Thanks to Jerry Hines and Lynn Cavin for helping me with the road captain duties and getting us there safely. 4
Safety Briefs by Lindell Smith, Safety Officer Hello Storm Rider family. I hope each of you are well and enjoying the fall weather. This is a great time of the year to get out and ride, so hope you can. The article this month is titled Limits, written by Jackie Vaughn. Hope you enjoy it. Everything in life has limits. As riders we have limits too, and these, unlike legal limits such as speed and right-of-way, can only be stretched so far before the consequences become very dire indeed. These limits are our personal limits, the limits of our machines, and the limits of our environment. To ride safely, we must know these limits and ride within them. This would be a fairly easy task if the limits were fixed and separate. However they are each highly variable and intertwined so that one can affect the others. Personal limits change constantly. They are slow, but perceptible signs of aging when we finally don glasses that eventually give way to bifocals and when hearing dims. As we reach the over-the-hill age of 40 night vision begins to lessen. With any luck, skill and experience provide some compensation. Not even the young among us are immune to personal limits. We are all susceptible. These limits can be imposed by physical conditions such as fatigue or emotion or by medications, both over-the-counter and prescription. New prescriptions can have unexpected side effects, and drug interactions can produce terrifying reactions. Medications should be discussed with doctors and pharmacist before we ride. Getting all prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy lessens the chance of a conflict or overdose not being spotted. Recreational drugs create dangers that should be obvious. Over-the-counter drugs frequently pose problems. Almost every label on allergy medications carries the warning, May cause drowsiness. Do not operate heavy machinery while taking this medication. By heavy machinery they don't mean bulldozers or tanks. They mean cars and trucks and motorcycles and riding lawnmowers and anything else where a drowsy, dizzy or uncoordinated operator could have an accident. Almost every skill needed to safely operate a motorcycle is affected by such medicines. Even when we're at our physical best, our motorcycles pose limits. Obvious ones are type and power. A fully loaded touring bike is not made to ride over sand dunes at the beach, nor is two-up 125cc bike safe on the interstate. Even the best-maintained bike is subject to routine wear and tear. New tires are slick until the mold release wears off. Cheap tires can offer poor traction under even optimum conditions. Brake pads wear. A poorly cared for bike is a twowheel disaster. When our bikes and we are in tip -top condition, the environment can sharply define our limits. A twisty back road is a joy on a warm sunny day. The same road on a cold, wet night is a rider's nightmare. Cold can dull our reflexes and slow our reaction times. Numbed hands operate controls more slowly and with less feed back, making full-braking stops less effective. Nature can brush a road with sand or mist it with rain or fog. Our only choice is to slow down and to avoid any sudden changes in speed or direction. Our limits, the limits of our machines, and natural limits, all combined in endless permutations, are part of the challenge of motorcycling. Knowing these limits and riding within them are part of the responsibility of motorcycling. And that is part of the joy of motorcycling. See you on the road soon. Ride Safe, Ride Often and Repeat! 5
OK State H.O.G. Rally, Poteau, September (Continued from p. 2) So here is what is open and I also will let you know if I have any letters of intent to fill them. Assistant Director, (Jerry Hines and Ira Frame) Treasurer, (Darrell Howard) Ladies of Harley Activities Officer Safety Officer Secretary I need letters of intent as soon as possible. If you want to come to the officers meeting on October 6th, you are welcome. Your letter of intent doesn t have to be any thing big. It is easy. Here s an example. Rick, This is Joe Blow and I would like to be considered for the Safety Officer. All candidates will have a meeting with Jesse Melton and me. It is nothing bad and it will only last about 15 minutes. Remember, this is your chapter, and you can make a difference. The weather should start cooling down a bit so get out, come on chapter rides, put some food in your belly, meet new friends, and have fun. But the most important thing: Keep the rubber side down. Ride and have fun. Your Director, Rick 6
Mid-Week Ride to Steak and Catfish Barn, OKC, September 16 What a great day for the last official Hole in the Wall Gang ride of the year. was beautiful, and as any dyslexic SNL fan knows, you can never have enough Bell Cow! We wound back through Chandler, picked up 66 again and headed back to the city. We made it to the Steak and Catfish Barn at just the right time. The lunch rush was just winding down and we were seated right away. Most of us ordered the catfish; the portions were huge, the food was great and we all took some home. Under sunny skies and a nice breeze on steroids, six of us took off from the Fort for a 120-mile loop that brought us back to Oklahoma City for lunch at the Steak and Catfish Barn. We went east to Harrah-Newalla Road, up to 62 out of Harrah to 102 and up to Route 66. A few miles north on 177 was the turnoff to Chandler Recreation Area, a nice scenic road that took us past Bell Cow Lake. It I am so glad the Tickles could finally join the Hole in Wall Gang. And I m also glad Diane Loser soloed, while Wayne was hanging out in the alley. And of course, thanks to my man, Lindell, for sweeping. Chapter Picnic, Red Rock Canyon, August
Dinner Ride to Eischen s, Okarche, September 19 What a great bunch of people came out to make the trip to the oldest bar in Oklahoma, Eischen's in Okarche. Thanks to my Road Captains Darrell Howard and Ray Sarchet for the assist!! By Brad Nelson Road Captain We had a total of 14 bikes and 17 people, with temperatures in the 70's. It was a little overcast but perfect riding conditions!!. We had the bar pretty much to ourselves as the lunch bunch had pretty much cleared out by the time we got there. Their fried chicken and okra was as usual delicious!!!! It s been a while since we've made a run to Eischen's. Hope we do it again soon, because it s always a great place to eat!! Thanks to the Storm Riders that came out...you guys and gals are the greatest!!!! Over Easy ride Breakfast Ride to Tiffany s in Noble, September 5 The final SMOE ride (Sunday Morning Over Easy) for this year was September 5. We had 10 members on 10 bikes go 75 miles to Tiffany s in Noble, Ok. It was a really nice weather and good ride to close out the 2015 SMOE season. These breakfast rides will return in July and August We also got a lot to eat and, as always, was delicious. 8
