3 4 Greetings from the Mayor General Information / Welcome to the 2019 Spring/Summer Activity Guide. The arrival of the Spring/ Summer Activity Guide is a sure sign that spring is just around the corner and the cold weather is behind us. We can now start looking forward to longer days and more time outside enjoying Orangeville s 35 parks that include two splash pads, a skateboard park, a BMX park, an off-leash dog park, an outdoor sports pad and parks with accessible play equipment. Make sure to visit Bravery Park with its new Indigenous Medicine Wheel Garden. You can share a family meal using our picnic tables and shelters and walk over 20 kilometres of our trail system. In January we opened the Saputo Health & Lifestyle Centre at Alder Recreation Centre with financial contributions from Saputo and Humber College. This 5,000-square-foot multi-purpose program space with a 3 on 3 basketball court, pickleball court and rooms for a variety of health and lifestyle programs including the new POUND class inspired by the fun of playing the drums, is a great addition to all the activities offered by Orangeville. We also offer a wide variety of summer camps for all ages at reasonable rates. Everything you need to know about our camps is in the Activity Guide which is also available at orangeville.ca. 5 6 Registration & Policy Information General Information / Program Fees and Refund Information Program rates and fees vary from program to program. Program fees are listed without tax. Drop-in program fees include tax. The Town reserves the right to change, cancel or alter any classes, times, fees, or location without notice in the event of low enrolment, change of facility or instructor availability. Non-Resident Rate Non-residents are subject to a 20% surcharge on programs, services and registrations. Dropin fees may vary. The Town reserves the right to request proof of residency. Age Requirement Children must be the minimum age required by the start of the program. Age requirements are program-specific and are indicated for each program. Program Cancellations There will be no registered programs scheduled on statutory holidays including Family Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Victoria Day, Canada Day and the August Civic Holiday. Your registration confirmation outlines any other cancellations specific to your program. Missed Classes In the event that a participant cannot attend a class(es), the Town regrets that make-up classes, credits, or refunds will not be offered. Program Transfers Program transfers will be permitted before the start of the third scheduled class, provided space is available. Family Discount Families registering three or more children in the same session are eligible for 15% family discount. Registration for all three children must be completed at the same time and can only be processed in person at either recreation centre. Applies only to Orangeville residents. Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) An administration fee of $25 will be charged for NSF cheques or payments. Adverse Weather Closures All efforts will be made to ensure that all recreation facilities remain open during regular hours of operation, with programs and services operating as normal. In the event of extreme weather, please contact Customer Service at or check for cancellations online at Single Visit Drop-in Valid for one continuous visit on the day of purchase only, with no in-and-out privileges. Single-visit, drop-in payments are not refundable or transferrable. 3 and 6 Month Passes, and 10, 20 and 50 Visit Passes Refunds are not available for passes. Refund requests for medical reasons will be considered and may require written documentation from a medical practitioner. Passes may be put on hold for medical reasons. Holds may be placed only once per pass term. Refund Policy Refund requests five days or more before the course start date will be issued a full refund. Refund requests within five days of the course start date, and up to the third scheduled class, will be issued a pro-rated refund, less a $10 administration fee. After the third scheduled class, refunds may be issued for medical reasons only. Written documentation may be required. If a program is cancelled by the Town, a full refund will be issued. Refunds for Camps (Holiday, March Break & Summer) Refund requests five days or more before the camp start date are subject to $25 administration fee. Refund requests within five days of the program start date are subject to a refund of 50% of the camp fee.

For all other camps, children must be 6 years of age by the first day of the camp program We are Nut Aware nut-free lunch and snacks are to be sent daily with your child Additional Support All summer day camp programs offered by the Town of Orangeville provide an inclusive environment. More details online Aliquam Campfire Night Qualified Staff We strive to provide the best for your child. Our staff have been certified in HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development. This national program strives to ensure that staff has the knowledge and tools necessary to offer the best program for your child. Training includes creative program design to ensure safe, diverse, unique and age-appropriate programming. Our staff are also trained in First Aid, positive child management techniques, parent communication and of course how to have lots of FUN! Extended Hours If our day camp hours are not long enough for you, try our extended care program! Extended care provides supervised activities before and after regular camp hours. Advanced registration is required. Before/ After Care is available from 7:30-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.* *Island Lake / Rotary Park 8-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Before Care weekly $26.00 After Care weekly $36.00 Before & After Care weekly $52.25 On Thursday August 15 at 7 p.m., join our summer camp team at the beautiful Island Lake Conservation Area for the annual Camp Aliquam campfire night. 9 10 Summer Camps / Welcome to Camp Aliquam The Town of Orangeville is excited about another summer of CAMP ALIQUAM! Summer is a time for fun and friendships and to build lifelong memories. Camp Aliquam offers opportunities for campers to experience what summer camp is all about. Orangeville is a unique community with much to offer and our camps are sure to please. Aliquam is latin for Orange...nothing rhymes with ORANGE! Mini Camps Aqua Camp Mini Get wet, get active and learn to swim. Campers will have the opportunity to improve their swimming skills while participating in certified Lifesaving Swim for Life swimming lessons. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs, special activities, and outside water games. Art Attack Mini Fun with art mini campers will get their hands messy as they finger paint, glue, cut, rip, tear and create a variety of art masterpieces. Mini campers will create their own art gallery exhibit for viewing by family, friends and other campers. Individual and group projects will be featured throughout the week. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as group games, songs, special activities and outside water games. Bugs, Slugs & Goo A great opportunity for young campers to get in touch with nature. This camp is offered at beautiful Island Lake Conservation Area and provides outdoor activities such as hikes, nature crafts, and exploring the environment for bugs, slugs and goo. A great way for campers to enjoy getting down and dirty with nature. Remember to dress for the weather as this is an outdoor camp. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs, special activities and outside water games. Icky Sticky Learn about the world of science with icky sticky experiments. Campers will try their hand at age-appropriate science activities and participate in a wide variety of camp activities such as active games, songs and crafts, special activities and outside water games. Kids Camp Mini This camp is perfect for the first-time camper. Campers will experience what camp is all about through interactive active and passive games, songs, stories, crafts, and of course, lots of fun. Campers can even dress up on theme days! Campers will also enjoy outside water games. Mini Learners School is almost here and this camp provides young campers the chance to get ready for the upcoming school year. Children will be provided with a variety of activities such as counting, shapes, letters, colours and weather to exercise their young minds by nurturing positive self-awareness. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs, special activities and outside water games. Junior, Senior & Pre-teen Camps Aqua Camp Campers will have lots of pool time as they participate in certified Lifesaving Swim for Life swim lessons as well as junior guarding skills, water polo and synchronized swimming skills. Skills development and water safety will be a focus in this camp. A great way to spend two weeks of the summer; getting wet and learning new skills. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs and special activities. Art Attack Attack art in a fun and interactive way! Campers will get creative with a variety of art mediums and create their own masterpieces as well as designing an art gallery exhibit for viewing by family, friends and other campers. Individual and group projects will be featured throughout the week. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as group games, songs, special activities and swimming. Bike & Swim Explore the Town on an urban bike adventure. Campers will learn basic bike safety and take part in planning daily excursions throughout Orangeville, including Island Lake Conservation Area. A great way to be active while exploring our beautiful town. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs, special activities and swimming. 10 11 Bikes & Trails Explore Island Lake on bike. Campers will learn basic bike safety and take part in planning daily trail excursions. A fun way to be active in a great environment. Remember to dress for the weather, as this is an outdoor camp. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs, special activities and swimming. Camp 3D Dance, Drama & Design A great combination of arts including creative dance, dramatic arts and artistic designs for that creative camper. Campers will create dance routines, skits and large format art projects to round out their 3D experience. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as group games, songs, special activities and swimming. Kids Camp Looking for a camp that offers a lot of variety? This is it! Campers will enjoy traditional camp activities such as group games, sports, arts & crafts, and swimming. Lots of activity and a fast-paced day will keep campers busy and engaged. Leadership Zone Spend some time this summer learning skills that will last a lifetime. Campers will learn leadership qualities and how to motivate others through interactive and co-operative games. A very hands-on camp with discussion groups and the chance to lead the younger campers in activities. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as group games, songs, special activities and swimming. Nature Quest Get back to nature! This camp aims to inspire commitment to conserving and sustaining our environment while engaging in outdoor adventure. Explore Island Lake Conservation Area while participating in trail hikes, group games, outdoor pursuits, and much more. Remember to dress for the weather, as this is an outdoor camp. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, songs, special activities and swimming. Reaction Attraction Campers will discover and explore the world of science through hands-on experiments that will spark their curious imaginations. Solids, liquids and other forms of matter will be explored along with scientific facts and data collection. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs, special activities and swimming. Sports Mania Teamwork and fair play are key essentials of Sports Mania. Campers will play traditional and non-traditional sports in a friendly non-competitive environment. Activities and drills will be planned to help campers master skills at their own pace. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs, special activities and swimming. Trip Trekkers Find that sense of adventure on a weekly off-site trip. Campers will participate in a variety of camp activities to keep them busy and active throughout the week, including games, crafts and swimming. Theatre Arts Camp Orangeville s own Broadway production right at camp! This camp offers drama-related activities in which campers can write their own scripts, create backdrops and showcase their talent with a short performance for family, friends and other campers at the end of the two weeks. Special workshops will be hosted by Theatre Orangeville. Depending on availability, campers may take a trip to see behind the scenes at a live stage production and dress rehearsal. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs, special activities and swimming. Wilderness Camp Get back to nature and learn about the environment, basic survival skills, orienteering and overall appreciation of nature. Island Lake Conservation Area is the perfect backdrop for this camp. Campers will work toward earning badges for mastering survival skills. Remember to dress for the weather, as this is an outdoor camp. Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs, special activities and swimming. Young Chefs Campers will learn a variety of cooking techniques and methods including how to read a recipe, use of basic kitchen tools, measuring and preparing food. Campers will learn about the Canada Food Guide and learn nutrition tips while creating their own recipe book, and, of course, campers will enjoy eating their own creations! Campers will also enjoy a variety of camp activities such as arts & crafts, group games, songs, special activities and swimming. Running shoes and a CSAapproved hockey helmet with full face mask are required. Sticks with plastic blades are provided. Participants will enjoy different themes at each monthly social, including cooking, swimming, skating and more! Ages 7-14 years. Participants will be encouraged to let their creativity flow. The session will end with an art exhibit for family and friends. The course covers topics such as street-smarts, people safety, online and Internet safety, home fires, emergencies and other situations, and basic First Aid skills. 16 Intro to Skating This program teaches the fundamentals of skating in a group lesson format, for beginners to advanced skaters. Participants are assessed and divided into levels based on skating ability. CSA-approved hockey helmets are mandatory. Full face masks are strongly recommended. No bob skates. Our pools offer the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program with a focus on skills development and safety in and around the water. Group classes, private and semi-private lessons are available. All classes are listed on RecConnect at Registration is easy with a few clicks. What level is most suitable? Participating in the proper swimming lesson level is imperative to your swimmer s success. Please have your child assessed to determine the appropriate level. Swim assessments are available at Alder Recreation Centre and Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre during any public swim. Did you miss a lesson? Swimming lessons may be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Make-up lessons will not be available due to participant absence. Ask about your swimmer s progress and any skills that may be worked on during a recreational swim. Opportunity creates mastery. Play and have fun! Please shower with soap and warm water before entering or re-entering the pool deck. Wear appropriate footwear. Bring clean flip flops or sandals to wear on the pool deck. Street shoes are not permitted / Not feeling well? Swimmers should refrain from using the pool when ill or if they have experienced diarrhea in the past week. Please refrain from feeding children or eating large meals before swimming. All swimmers are encouraged to visit the washroom before entering the pool. Those without bowel control are required to wear a swim diaper. Food-free zone. Only water is permitted on pool decks in a plastic, reusable container. Strollers are not permitted on the pool deck or in the showers. Parents and guardians are reminded that children should never be left unattended. The use of any devices capable of rendering a photographic image is prohibited in the showers, change rooms, washrooms and pool area. 19 20 Learn to Swim Descriptions Aquatics Preschool 2 Ratio 1:4 These preschoolers learn to jump into chestdeep water by themselves, and get in and out of the water wearing a PFD. They ll submerge and exhale underwater. Wearing a PFD, they ll glide on their front and back / Parent & Tot 1 Ratio 1:12 Designed for the 4 to 12-month-old, this level is all about helping your child feel and explore the water by floating, splashing, reaching and paddling. You ll learn how to help your child play in and with the water with comfort and confidence. Parent & Tot 2 Ratio 1:12 Designed for the 12 to 24-month-old, this level teaches children to get their faces wet and blow bubbles (the first step to breath control). With your guidance, your child will try to recover objects below the surface, perform front and back floats and learn how to travel at the surface by kicking. Parent & Tot 3 Ratio 1:12 This is an advanced level for 2 to 3-year-olds. They ll have fun jumping into the water and getting out without assistance. They learn to hold their breath and open their eyes underwater to recover objects from the bottom. Mastering front/back floats in starfish and pencil positions, as well as moving through the water, provide the building blocks for swimming stroke development in the preschool program. Preschool 1 Ratio 1:4 This level requires parent participation for the first 3-5 weeks of the program, until the children are comfortable and can safely participate by themselves. These preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. They ll float and glide on both their front and back. They ll also learn to get their faces wet and blow bubbles in the water. Preschool 3 Ratio 1:4 These youngsters will try both jumping into and treading in deep water while wearing a PFD. They ll try to recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water as well as work on kicking and gliding through the water. Preschool 4 Ratio 1:5 These preschoolers will practice floating by themselves for seven seconds! They ll do sideways entries wearing a PFD and master a short swim on their front wearing a life jacket, as well as gliding and kicking on their side without assistance. Preschool 5 Ratio 1:5 These advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They will get more adventuresome with a sideways entry wearing a PFD, tread water for 15 seconds, then swim 5m as one continuous sequence. They ll work on front and back crawl swims for 5m, and glides for 7m. Their toughest challenge may be treading water for 10 seconds unassisted. Preschool 6 Ratio 1:5 These advanced preschoolers will learn the forward roll entry with a PFD, and build on their Swim to Survive sequence from the previous level. They ll tread water for 15 seconds, and even do a 15m swim: that s over half the distance of the lap pool! Swimmer 1 Ratio 1:5 These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water, both with and without a PFD. They ll learn to open their eyes, blow bubbles and hold their breath underwater. They ll work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back.

20 Learn to Swim Descriptions 21 Swimmer 2 Ratio 1:6 These advanced beginners will jump into deeper water without a PFD for the first time. They will also learn to fall sideways into the water wearing a PFD. They ll be able to support themselves at the surface without an aid for 10 seconds, and swim 7m on their front, back & side. This will be their first attempt at interval training. Swimmer 3 Ratio 1:6 These junior swimmers will learn to dive from a sitting position, and do in-water front somersaults & handstands. They ll work on 10m of front crawl & back crawl and work on treading water for 15 seconds. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4x5m. Swimmer 4 Ratio 1:6 These intermediate swimmers will swim 5m underwater and 13m of front & back crawl. This is the first level they will be introduced to whip kick. Their new skills will continue to work towards the Canadian Swim to Survive standard. Swimmer 5 Ratio 1:8 These swimmers will continue working on shallow dives, treading water, and in-water forward somersaults. They ll refine their front and back crawl over 15m swims of each, and whip kick for 10m on their back. Swimmers will have their first introduction to elementary backstroke. Swimmer 6 Ratio 1:8 These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of some sophisticated aquatic skills including standing dives, treading water for one minute, and the Canadian Swim To Survive standard. Swimmers will continue to practise lengths of front & back crawl and will refine their whip kick to work towards breaststroke. Swimmer 7 Ratio 1:10 Swimmers continue stroke development with 50m swims of front & back crawl. They will attempt some advanced skills such as sculling, scissor kick, tuck jumps, eggbeater, and dolphin kick. They will be challenged to swim breaststroke for the first time. Swimmer 8 Ratio 1:10 Swimmers develop better strokes over m swims of each stroke. They tackle lifesaving sport skills such as head-up swims and stride & compact jumps. Swimmers will have their first attempt at the butterfly stroke. They may complain about the 300m distance swim that s 12 lengths! Swimmer 9 Ratio 1:10 Swimmers are challenged with a variety of lifesaving skills such as lifesaving kicks, selfrescue techniques, in-water object carries and basic First Aid skills for conscious victims. Fitness improves with 350m workouts and 100m timed swims. Swimmer 10 Ratio 1:10 These advanced swimmers will continue to refine their strokes over long distances. They will combine a variety of lifesaving skills from previous levels to perform basic rescues. First Aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, choking and treatment for shock. Adult/Teen Swimmer 1 Ratio 1:12 These beginner swimmers will learn the base skills to build their comfort in the water. They will learn entering and exiting the pool safely, floats, breath control, submersion, and glides through the water while kicking. Adult/Teen Swimmer 2 Ratio 1:12 These intermediate swimmers will learn skills such as diving in the deep end, somersaults, handstands, underwater swims, and whip kick. They will build endurance and refine their strokes through 10-15m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. 21 22 Recreational Swimming Aquatics Recreational swimming is a great way to keep active, have fun and socialize in a friendly atmosphere. Swimming is a great way to improve your fitness and stay healthy and is a great low-impact exercise. Our pools offer a variety of programs to suit all ages and abilities. Recreational programs are offered as drop-in or instructor-led programs, pay-as-you-go or purchase a pass. Schedules are available online or stop by the Customer Service desk at our recreation centres. Leisure Pool The leisure pool located at Alder Recreation Centre provides ramp access entry as well as a wide gradual stepped entry. This pool has two water spray features that are used during a variety of program times. This pool also features a jet area. Water Slide Located at Alder Recreation Centre, this slide is a three-storey water slide and exits into a trough-style water basin. The slide is open during a variety of drop-in swim times. Riders must be 122 cm (42 inches to ride). Family Change Room A family change room is available at Alder Recreation Centre.

23 24 Aquatics Town of Orangeville Swimming Admission Standards The Town of Orangeville requires swimmers to meet the following admission standards and caregiver ratios. Swimmers who do not meet these standards will not be granted admission to the pool. Stop! Children six (6) years of age or younger, regardless of swimming ability, must be directly supervised in the water by a parent or guardian at least fourteen (14) years of age, who is within arm s reach, and able to render immediate assistance. Maximum of two (2) children per parent/ guardian. A facility swim test may be attempted to use the slide and participate in deep end activities. Age 14+ within arm s reach Ages / Caution! Children ages seven to nine (7 9) who are nonswimmers and are unable to complete the facility swim test are required to wear an orange wristband, and must be directly supervised in the water by a parent or guardian at least fourteen (14) years of age who is within arm s reach, and able to render immediate assistance. Age 14+ Maximum of two (2) children per parent/guardian. within arm s reach Children ages seven to nine (7 9) who are comfortable swimmers and able to complete the facility swim test are required to wear a green wristband, and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at least fourteen (14) years of age who maintains visual contact and remains in the pool viewing area at all times.
