Taylor logged 223 yards vs. Florida Atlantic, 249 yards at Nebraska and 219 yards vs. Purdue. Only 3 active FBS players own more 200- yard games in their careers than Taylor s 3: Old Dominion RB Ray Lawry (4), New Mexico State RB Larry Rose III (4) and Hawaii RB Diocemy Saint Juste (4). Each of those players are seniors. Taylor is just the sixth FBS freshman since 2000 to post 3 games of 200-plus rushing yards in a season, and the first since Oklahoma s Samaje Perine in He joins North Texas Jamario Thomas (6 games, 2004); Michigan s Mike Hart (3, 2004); Oklahoma s Adrian Peterson (3, 2004); Northwestern s Tyrell Sutton (3, 2005) and Perine (3, 2014) on that list. Taylor is the second true freshman in Wisconsin history to record multiple 200- yard rushing games. He joins 1999 Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne also a New Jersey native who had 5 games of 200- plus yards as a true freshman in In hitting the 200-yard mark in consecutive games vs. Nebraska and Purdue, Taylor became the first Big Ten freshman with back-to-back 200-yard games since Michigan s Mike Hart in Taylor has averaged 7.5 yards per carry, the second-best mark nationally among players with at least 125 carries on the season. He trails only Stanford s Bryce Love (10.3 ypc) in that category. The explosive Taylor has posted 37 runs of 10-plus yards, the most of any FBS player. He s followed by Louisville QB Lamar Jackson (36), Oregon RB Royce Freeman (34), Stanford RB Bryce Love (33) and Florida Atlantic RB Devin Singletary (33). GAME NOTES Including most recently a 67-yard TD run vs. Purdue on Oct. 14, Taylor owns 3 runs of 60-plus yards. Only Stanford s Bryce Love (6) and Notre Dame s Josh Adams (6) have more this season. Taylor made the first start of his career vs. Florida Atlantic on Sept. 9, becoming the Badgers first true freshman starter at running back since Zach Brown started the final 4 games of the 2007 season. He became the just the sixth true freshman to start at tailback for Wisconsin since 1990, joining Mark Montgomery (1990), Terrell Fletcher (1991), Ron Dayne (1996), Dwayne Smith (2002) and Brown (2007). SECOND HALF STARS The Badgers have outscored their opponents in the second half this season. That includes a margin in the fourth quarter. Opposing offenses have scored just 3 touchdowns on Wisconsin s defense in the second half of games this season, totaling 21 points. Not only has the Badgers defense been stingy after halftime, but the unit also has put up 18 points of its own in the second half of games: interception return TDs vs. Utah State (Joe Ferguson) and Northwestern (Natrell Jamerson) and safeties against BYU (Mike Maskalunas sack) and Northwestern (D Cota Dixon sack). Running behind that group, Wisconsin ranks 8th among Power Five teams in rushing, averaging yards per game. In terms of pass protection, the Badgers didn t yield a sack last Saturday vs. Maryland, marking the second time this season that UW didn t allow a sack (also vs. Florida Atlantic). The Badgers rank 8th among Power Five programs in terms of fewest sacks allowed, giving up just 1.14 per game (Mississippi State leads the nation, at 0.43, while Minnesota has the top number in the Big Ten, at 0.57). That continues a trend of steady improvement in the young unit s third year under the direction of offensive coordinator and O-line coach Joe Rudolph: SACKS ALLOWED, UW Season Sacks/Game FBS Rank T-53rd T-41st T-14th HORNIBROOK HITS THE TARGET Sophomore QB Alex Hornibrook ranks sixth among Power Five quarterbacks in pass efficiency rating (166.1) by completing 65.8% of his passes for 1,435 yards, 13 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Among Big Ten signal callers, only Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett has a better efficiency mark, at The Badgers have won Hornibrook s last 13 starts the nation s longest active win streak by a quarterback dating back to Oct. 22, Hornibrook owns a 14-2 (.875) record as the Badgers starter, including an 11-2 (.846) mark in Big Ten play. His 14 wins rank in a tie for eighth-most in school history. Hornibrook s average of 9.6 yards per attempt ranks third among Power Five QBs, behind Oklahoma s Baker Mayfield (11.6), and Oklahoma State s Mason Rudolph (11.0). Averaging passing yards per game, Hornibrook has thrown for 200-plus yards in 4 of the Badgers 7 contests and GAME NOTES missed that mark by 1 yard vs. Purdue (199) and 3 yards vs. Northwestern (197). He entered the season with one 200-yard game to his credit (214 vs. Ohio State on Oct. 15, 2016). The red zone has been a comfortable place to pass for Hornibrook, who owns a pass efficiency rating of inside the 20. He s gone 16-for-22 (.727) for 168 yards, 10 TDs and 0 interceptions in the red zone. Hornibrook s 18-for-19 (.947) passing performance at BYU on Sept. 16 put him in elite company alongside former Badgers QB Russell Wilson as the only major college quarterbacks since 2000 to complete at least 94 percent of their passes in a road game. Wilson went 16-for-17 (.941) at Minnesota on Nov. 12, Hornibrook's 18-for-19 showing set UW's single-game completion percentage record at 94.7%, breaking the record held by Darrell Bevell from a 17-for-18 (94.4%) performance vs. Northwestern in THIRD DOWN LOOKING UP On the season, Hornibrook is 28-for-46 for 449 yards with 6 TDs and 3 INT on third down. That s good for a pass efficiency rating. Only Georgia s Jake Fromm (208.7), TCU s Kenny Hill (201.6), Oklahoma State s Mason Rudolph (175.1) and Ohio State s J.T. Barrett (168.1) have better marks among Power Five QBs with at least 30 attempts. Hornibrook was a perfect 8-for-8 for 114 yards with 3 TDs (343.5 pass efficiency rating) on third down vs. BYU on Sept. 16. Thanks in part to Hornibrook's efforts (27 first downs on 54 third-down passing attempts 50.0%), the Badgers have converted 55.2% of their third-down attempts overall on the season. That ranks No. 2 nationally, behind only TCU (56.2%). Only 7 of the 130 FBS teams have converted at least 50.0% of their third-down tries this season. Conversely, the Badgers defense has allowed opponents to convert just 30.9% of their third-down attempts. DEFENSE DOMINATING Wisconsin has had 3 defensive coordinators in as many seasons, but the Badgers are once again performing like one of the nation's best units under first-year coordinator Jim Leonhard. Only Alabama (14.4 ppg) has allowed fewer points over that 5-year stretch. Ohio State (18.6), Clemson (19.0) and Michigan (19.7) round out the top 5 scoring defenses of the past 5 seasons. The Badgers have allowed just 9 touchdowns this season, matching Penn State and Alabama for the second-fewest of any FBS team. Only Washington (8) has allowed fewer total TDs. Wisconsin has held 4 of its 7 opponents under 250 yards of total offense, including conference foes Northwestern (244) and Purdue (221). BACKED UP, NO BACKING DOWN Including following a first-quarter fumble that set Maryland up at the UW 5-yard line but resulted in only a field goal last Saturday, the Badgers defense has taken over in sudden change situations 13 times this season (following 6 interceptions, 6 fumbles and a blocked punt). UW has allowed opponents to convert just 5 of those 13 opportunities into scores 2 TDs and 3 FGs. Overall, the Badgers defense has allowed touchdowns on just 3 of the 10 opponent possessions that have started in UW territory this season. RED MEANS STOP The Badgers lead the nation in opponent touchdown percentage in the red zone at 27.3%, allowing TDs on just 6 the 22 opponent drives that have traveled inside the Wisconsin 20 yard line. UW also ranks 5th among Power Five teams in overall red zone scoring defense, allowing points on 68.2% (15 of 22) of opponents red zone drives. That includes 6 TDs and 7 field goals. Only TCU (62.5%), Virginia (63.2%), Ohio State (64.7%) and Penn State (66.7%) have been more stingy inside the 20. LEAVING THEM AT A LOSS The Badgers have spent more time in opponents backfields this season, averaging 3.1 sacks per game. That total ranks in a tie for 13th nationally and second in the Big Ten with Michigan (Penn State leads the league, at 3.4) and is a major jump from UW s average of 2.4 sacks per game last season. Wisconsin s average is buoyed by the 8 sacks the Badgers tallied vs. Northwestern, matching Washington (8 vs. Cal on Oct. 7) for the third-most by a Power Five team this season (Clemson had 11 sacks vs. Auburn on Sept. 9 and Cal had 9 vs. Washington State on Oct. 13). The performance marked UW s highest sack total since logging 8 vs. Penn State in The Badgers finished with a season-high 11 tackles for loss vs. Northwestern and are averaging 6.7 TFLs per game on the year. UW has recorded at least 8 tackles for loss in 3 of its 7 games this season, something the Badgers failed to do once in GAME NOTES Senior OLB Garret Dooley led the way vs. Northwestern, contributing to 5 of the Badgers 8 sacks (2 solo, 3 assist). Dooley finished with 3.5 sacks, a total eclipsed by only 4 FBS players this season: Clemson s Austin Bryant (Sept. 9 vs. Auburn), SMU s Justin Lawler (Sept. 30 vs. UConn), Arizona s Kylan Wilborn (Oct. 14 vs. UCLA) and Central Michigan s Joe Ostman (Oct. 21 vs. Ball State) who each recorded 4.0 sacks. Dooley s 5.0 TFLs in the game rank in a tie for the fifth-highest single-game total in school history, and the most since Alex Lewis had a school-record 6.5 TFLs vs. Purdue on Oct. 18, NOWHERE TO RUN The Badgers have held 4 of their 7 opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards while giving up an average of just 88.0 yards per game the nation s fifth-best mark behind Alabama (66.4), Washington (73.0), TCU (80.7) and Georgia (82.1). Dating back to last season, UW has held 8 of its last 13 opponents under 100 rushing yards. Wisconsin allowed Northwestern to rush for just 25 yards on Sept. 30, its fewest allowed to a Big Ten opponent since holding Michigan State to 25 rushing yards on Nov. 1, Wisconsin has allowed just one individual 100-yard rusher Nebraska s Devine Ozigbo (112 yards on Oct. 7, 2017) in its last 20 games. Opponents have managed just 2.95 yards per rushing attempt against the Badgers defense. UW has surrendered just 2 rushing touchdowns on the year. Only Notre Dame (1) has allowed fewer rushing scores. NO BIG DEAL The Badgers are limiting big plays, having allowed just 18 plays of 20-plus yards. Among FBS teams, only Washington (13) has allowed fewer explosive plays on the season. PLAYING TAKEAWAY A year after matching the single-season program record with 22 interceptions in Leonhard s first season in charge of the secondary, UW has already picked off 10 passes in its first 7 games of Wisconsin has turned 4 of those picks into quick points, with senior S Joe Ferguson scoring on a 99-yard pick-six vs. Utah State, senior S Natrell Jamerson returning a 36-yard INT for a score vs. Northwestern, sophomore ILB Chris Orr returning an INT 78 yards for at TD at Nebraska and T.J. Edwards going 54 yards with a pick-six vs. Maryland. Wisconsin joins Duke, Northwestern and Stanford as the only FBS football teams to earn APR Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA in each of the last five years. Wisconsin, Duke and Northwestern are the only programs to post a score of at least 990 in each of the last three years. 8 HEAD COACH PAUL CHRYST HEAD COACH PAUL CHRYST 2016 HAYES SCHEMBECHLER BIG TEN COACH OF THE YEAR Wisconsin football continues to thrive under Paul Chryst s leadership. In his first season as head coach at his alma mater, Chryst led Wisconsin to a 10-3 record in 2015 a run that concluded with a victory over USC in the Holiday Bowl. For an encore, he directed the Badgers to an 11-3 finish in 2016, including a win in the Cotton Bowl and Big Ten West Division championship. Chryst was named the 2016 Hayes-Schembechler Big Ten Coach of the Year and for leading the Badgers to an 11-win season against a schedule that included six matchups with top 10-ranked teams was a national finalist for both The Dodd Trophy and Paul Bear Bryan Coach of the Year awards. A former Wisconsin player and assistant coach and a Madison native, Chryst returned to his roots when he was named the Badgers 30th head coach on Dec. 17, Since then, Chryst has become one of just four coaches in Big Ten history to post double-digit win totals in each of his first two seasons as head coach, joining Michigan legend Fielding Yost and current cotemporaries Jim Harbaugh of Michigan and Urban Meyer of Ohio State. Chryst s 21-6 (.778) overall record marked the best start by a Badgers coach through two seasons, and he is the first UW mentor to win consecutive bowl games to begin a tenure as head coach. UW went 13-4 (.765) in Big Ten games over his first two seasons, with only Ohio State (15-2) posting a better mark in league play across the 2015 and 16 campaigns. Including two seasons at the helm of the program and seven years as the Badgers offensive coordinator, Chryst has overseen some of the nation s best units on both sides of the ball. Across his first two seasons as head coach, Wisconsin boasted one of the nation s truly elite defenses. The Badgers allowed just 14.7 points per game over the 2015 and 2016 seasons, a mark that ranked No. 2 nationally over that span and trailed only Alabama s mark of 14.1 points allowed per contest. Over those two years, Wisconsin also ranked No. 4 in total defense (285.6 yards per game), No. 3 in rushing defense (97.1 ypg) and No. 3 in pass efficiency defense (102.1). During Chryst s seven years as offensive coordinator from , Wisconsin averaged 34.1 points and yards of total offense per game. Both marks were the best in the Big Ten over that span and powered the Badgers to conference titles in 2010 and 2011, remarkable offensive seasons in which UW averaged 41.5 and 44.1 points per game, respectively. Wisconsin had won 10 or more games in a season just three times before Chryst joined the Badgers coaching staff as offensive coordinator in In his nine seasons on staff since, the Badgers posted double-digit win totals seven times and had an overall record of (.765). Before spending the previous three seasons as the head coach at Pittsburgh, where he led the Panthers to three consecutive bowl appearances, Chryst oversaw the most explosive offenses in UW history as the Badgers offensive coordinator. During those seven seasons, Wisconsin claimed a pair of Big Ten titles while piling up a (.761) overall record. Chryst was a three-time letterwinner at UW, where he earned a degree in political science. He and his wife, Robin, have three children: Katy, JoJo and Danny. 9 THE CHRYST FILE Career Record (6th Season): (.653) Record at Wisconsin: 28-6 (3rd Season) Big Ten Record: 17-4 (3rd Season) Bowl Record: 3-1 (.750) Birthdate: Nov. 17, 1965 Hometown: Madison, Wis. Originally opened in 1917, the venerable venue celebrates its centennial in What now stands as the oldest stadium in the Big Ten, Camp Randall was originally used as a Civil War training site. This hallowed ground has seen many upgrades since officially becoming the home of the Badgers in During the Civil War, nearly 70,000 soldiers trained at Camp Randall, which also included a hospital and a prison for Confederate soldiers on its grounds. Named for Alexander Randall, the state of Wisconsin s first wartime governor, the Camp Randall land was returned to state fair property after peace was restored nationally. The fair later moved to Milwaukee, and Wisconsin s Civil War veterans urged the legislature to purchase the land. In 1893, the state presented the site to the university as a memorial athletic field. Since then, Camp Randall Stadium has grown from a small venue with wooden bleachers to one of the largest stadiums in the Big Ten with a capacity of 80,321. One of the nation s most historic college football venues, Camp Randall Stadium also happens to be one of the intimidating for opposing teams, and Wisconsin has made the most of the home-field advantage that the raucous atmosphere provides. Though it has only been a tradition at Camp Randall Stadium since 1998, Jump Around is now a defining part of UW game day. Between the third and fourth quarters, Jump Around by House of Pain is played and the 80,000-plus fans delight in doing as the tune instructs. Jump Around was crowned the winner of Sports Illustrated s Greatest College Football Traditions bracket in 2012 and was named the nation s best tradition in votes contested by SiriusXM College Sports Nation in 2014 and Since the start of the 2004 season, the Badgers have compiled a record (.892) at Camp Randall Stadium. Among Power Five programs, only Ohio State (86-10,.896) has won a higher percentage of its home games in that time frame, with Oklahoma (73-9,.890) just behind. Opened in 1917, Camp Randall is the fourth-oldest stadium in the FBS. The only older on-campus facilities are: Georgia Tech (1913), Mississippi State (1914) and Cincinnati (1916). The Camp Randall grounds were used as a Civil War training site. It also held Confederate soldiers, many of whom died and were laid to rest on the west side of Madison. The area known as soldiers rest is the northernmost Confederate cemetery in the United States. Camp Randall Stadium served as a living quarters for students and military personnel during the 1940s. Dormitories were built underneath the east side stands. Approximately 150 men lived there. OLDEST STADIUMS Camp Randall is among the oldest facilities in the FBS: 1.
