Senior QB Joel Stave has thrown for 1,974 yards and needs 26 to become the fifth quarterback in school history with multiple 2,000-yard passing seasons. With 6,922 for his career, he needs 78 yards to join Darrell Bevell ( ) and John Stocco ( ) as the only QBs in school history to throw for 7,000 yards Wisconsin has been successful on 24 of 46 third-down attempts over the last three games, a conversion percentage of 52.2%. UW has converted at least 50% of its tries in all three games. Over their first six games, the Badgers owned a thirddown conversion mark of 39.2% Heading into their first game at Maryland, the Badgers own an 11-2 record in their first road games against Big Ten opponents including a 3-1 mark in the modern era (see Page 8). UW has led the nation in scoring defense twice: the famed Hard Rocks defense allowed 6.6 points per game in 1951, and the 1998 Big Ten and Rose Bowl champion Badgers allowed 10.2 points per game. The Badgers also lead the country in relative scoring defense, holding opponents to just 36.4% of their points-per-game average on the season (via SportSource Analytics): RELATIVE SCORING DEFENSE, FBS 1. Wisconsin 36.4% 2. Michigan 42.0% 3. Alabama 48.1% 4. Florida 49.1% 5. Ohio State 51.3% The Badgers have held 6 opponents to 10 points or fewer, the best mark of any FBS defense this season. Michigan and Missouri each have held opponents to 10 points or fewer in 5 games. The Badgers have given up 12 total touchdowns on the year, matching Boston College for the fewest among teams that have played 9 games. The next-best total among teams that have pleyd 9 games belongs to Marshall (18). Wisconsin held Rutgers QB Chris Laviano to 4-of-14 (28.6%) passing for 31 yards and a 32.9 pass efficiency rating. He entered the game leading the Big Ten with a completion percentage of 67.2 and ranked third with an efficiency mark of In holding Rutgers to 82 passing yards and 83 rushing yards, Wisconsin kept an opponent under 100 yards in both categories for the first time since limiting Rutgers to 63 passing and 76 rushing yards on Nov. 1, The Badgers have held 3 opponents under 200 total yards: Miami (Ohio), 157; Purdue, 191; and Rutgers, 165. Only Boston College (4) and Michigan (4) have held more opponents under the 200-yard mark in UW held 4 of its 14 opponents under 200 total yards last season. UW is allowing 4.46 yards per play this season, which ranks No. 13 nationally. The Badgers have given up less than 5.0 yards per play in each of Dave Aranda s three seasons, making UW one of just five defenses to do so each year from Wisconsin joins Alabama, Louisville, Marshall and Utah State (Aranda s previous stop as defensive coordinator) in that club: ALLOWING LESS THAN 5.0 YDS/PLAY ( ) School Avg. Alabama Louisville Marshall Utah State Wisconsin The Badgers are making opponents work for their points: UW ranks in a tie for No. 2 nationally with Michigan in opponents plays per point, at Only Missouri (5.60) is making opposing offenses more inefficient than the Badgers. For reference, through eight weeks of the season, the average FBS defense is forcing opponents to run 2.87 plays for every point scored. Wisconsin opponents have scored on just 14.4% of their possessions this season, a mark that ranks No. 2 in the FBS. Michigan s defense leads the country, with opponents scoring on just 13.7% of their offensive drives: PCT. OF OPP. POSSESSIONS LEADING TO SCORE 1. Michigan 13.7% 2. Wisconsin 14.4% 3. Boston College 16.8% 4. Missouri 17.3% 5. Boise State 18.1% UW has allowed a TOTAL of 27 opponent plays to be run on its side of the 50 yard line in the second half of its five Big Ten games (5.4 plays per game). Against Iowa on Oct. 3, the Badgers contained all six of the Hawkeyes second-half drives to Iowa territory. The Hawkeyes did not run a play in Wisconsin territory in the second half. STOP ON RED Wisconsin has allowed opponents to reach the red zone just 15 times in 9 games, ranking the Badgers in a tie Louisville for No. 2 nationally in terms of fewest opponent red-zone chances. Only Michigan (12 in 8 games) has allowed fewer red zone trips. The Badgers have allowed just 10 scores on those 15 trips (66.7%). That makes UW one of six teams nationally with an opponents red zone scoring percentge of less than 70% (joining Toledo, Appalachian State, Florida International, Temple and Georgia). Including holding Illinois and Rutgers a combined 0-for-4 in terms of scoring touchdowns in the red zone over the last two weeks, the Badgers have allowed just 5 TDs in their opponents 15 red-zone trips. That touchdown percentage of 33.3% ranks in a tie for No. 3 nationally and leads the Big Ten. Toledo is the national leader at 26.3% (5-for-19), followed by Boston College at 27.8% (5-for-18). Over the last three seasons under defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, Wisconsin has allowed an average of just 2.22 opponent drives per game to enter the red zone the fewest of any team in the nation. Clemson (2.32), Iowa (2.41), Michigan State (2.43) and Alabama (2.49) round out the top five. NOWHERE TO RUN TEAM NOTES After giving up 238 rushing yards to Alabama in its season opener Sept. 5, Wisconsin has surrendered an average of 77.9 yards over its last 8 games. The Badgers have allowed just 20 runs of 10-plus yards, matching LSU for the second-lowest total of any FBS defense. Only Alabama (19) has allowed fewer. Opponents are averaging 3.21 yards per carry against UW, the Badgers best mark since giving up just 2.89 ypc in 2009 (the No. 5 mark in school history). Alabama averaged 6.4 yards per carry vs. Wisconsin on Sept. 5, but the Badgers subsequent 8 opponents combined to average 2.7 yards per rushing attempt. Wisconsin has allowed just eight players to rush for 100 yards in 36 games under defensive coordinator Dave Aranda. Offensively, Wisconsin has produced yard rushing performances in that time span. ARANDA S IMPACT In two-plus seasons under defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, who returns for his third season in 2015, Wisconsin has allowed an average of 16.7 points per game. That ranks No. 2 among FBS programs over that span, behind only Alabama (16.3). Under Aranda, UW has allowed an average of yards per game, the No. 2 total in the country over that three-year span behind only Louisville (286.9). Aranda s defenses allowed an average of passing yards, the No. 3 mark in the nation behind only San Jose State (167.6) and Clemson (176.8). UW also has allowed just rushing yards per game over the last three seasons, a mark that ranks No. 5 nationally in that time frame and trails only Michigan State (93.9), Alabama (98.4), Louisville (98.8) and Stanford (104.0). WISCONSIN DEFENSE UNDER ARANDA ( ) Category Avg. FBS Rk. Only Alabama (59), Louisville (62) and Florida (65) have allowed fewer offensive TDs since the start of the 2013 season. PASS-FIRST BADGERS? Wisconsin has averaged 34.8 passing attempts through its first nine games, the highest average in program history. Only twice in the modern era (since 1946) have the Badgers averaged more than 30 passes per game: in 1983 (30.6) and 1995 TEAM NOTES (30.2). From 1996 to 2014, UW averaged 23.7 passing attempts per game. The Badgers attempted at least 35 passes in four consecutive games 38 vs. Iowa, 50 vs. Nebraska, 39 vs. Purdue and 40 vs. Illinois. Going back to 1990, UW had thrown 35 passes in back-to-back games just once 39 each vs. Michigan State and Iowa in UW s average of passing yards per game puts the Badgers on pace to break the school record of ypg, set in Through nine games, Wisconsin s leading receiver (WR Alex Erickson, 748 yards) has amassed more yardage than its leading rusher (RB Dare Ogunbowale, 591). The Badgers have seen their leading receiver outgain their leading rusher in a season just 12 times in the modern era (since 1946) eight of which came over a 10-year stretch from Since 1990, Wisconsin s leading receiver has outgained its leading rusher just twice: WR Lee Evans had 1,213 receiving yards to RB Dwayne Smith s 857 rushing yards in Evans had a school-record 1,545 receiving yards to RB Anthony Davis 1,466 rushing yards in Prior to those seasons, it hadn t happened since WR Al Toon recorded 881 receiving yards and RB Gary Ellerson had 777 rushing yards in Wisconsin has produced at least one 1,000- yard rusher in 20 of the last 22 years. Over that stretch, 12 players have combined for a total of 22 1,000-yard seasons. THIRD DOWN S THE CHARM? After struggling to move the chains on third down over a span of four games from Sept. 19 to Oct. 10 UW converted on just 10 of its 49 (20.4%) third-down attempts in that span the Badgers have bounced back in a big way. Wisconsin has been successful on 24 of 46 third-down attempts over the last three games, a conversion percentage of 52.2%. UW has converted at least 50% of its tries in all three games. Wisconsin s season mark of 44.0% would be its best third-down percentage since converting 54.7% on third downs in SPECIAL TEAMS DOWNRIGHT SPECIAL Senior P Drew Meyer earned Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honors after posting a season-best 46.8-yard average on his five punts at Illinois, his highest mark since registering a 47.8-yard average vs. Penn State on Nov. 30, Meyer has excelled at pinning opponents deep the last two weeks. Illinois average starting field position after a Meyer punt in the second half was its own 11.4 yard line. Rutgers had an average starting field position of its own 12.6 yard line following a punt. 4

For his career, Gaglianone is 21-for-27 in one-score games (UW leading or trailing by 7 or fewer points), including an 9-for-12 mark from 40-plus yards. Overall, the Badgers have made several noteworthy improvements on special teams, especially in terms of their coverage units: The Badgers are allowing an average of just 16.0 yards per kickoff return, a mark that ranks No. 2 in the Big Ten and ranks No. 6 nationally. Wisconsin allowed an average of 19.0 yards per return last season. Opponents average starting field position against Wisconsin after a kickoff is their own 22.9 yard line, the third-best mark of any FBS team behind only Boston College (22.3) and Ohio State (22.7). Last year, UW opponents average starting field position was the 25.1 yard line. UW is allowing 5.3 yards per punt return. Badgers opponents averaged 8.1 yards per punt return last season. EXPERIENCE... Three players played in their 50th career games last Saturday vs. Rutgers: WR Jordan Fredrick, CB Darius Hillary and P Drew Meyer. They became the 45th, 46th and 47th players in school history to play in at least 50 games. With three regular-season games and a bowl remaining on UW s schedule, all three have the opportunity to match the school record of 54 games currently held by five players. Senior S Michael Caputo will play in his 50th career game at Maryland....MEETS INEXPERIENCE A total of 24 players have seen their first collegiate action for Wisconsin in 2015, including 16 that have made their first career starts. Wisconsin has played a total of 21 freshmen (17 redshirt freshmen, 4 true freshmen) this season. Only Penn State (22) has played more among Big Ten teams. ALL-AMERICKSON Senior WR Alex Erickson has picked up 748 receiving yards on 58 receptions. Since being held to 30 yards on 3 receptions vs. Iowa (when he was forced to leave the game in the first half with an injury) Erickson has averaged 99.5 receiving yards over UW s last four games. Erickson posted his second 100-yard game of the season and the fifth of his career with 103 receiving yards on 10 catches vs. Rutgers. He has logged at least 85 yards in 6 of 9 games this season. OFFENSE NOTES Erickson is one of 24 FBS players and the only player from the Big Ten with at least 100 receptions and 1,500 receiving yards over the past two seasons. Erickson s 58 receptions are the most catches by a Badgers player through the first nine games of a season. Lee Evans ranks second with his 56 grabs through nine games in Evans went on to set a school record with 75 catches in 01. Travis Beckum had 53 receptions through nine games on his way to equaling Evans record with 75 grabs in Jared Abbrederis, who broke the record with 78 catches grabs in 2013, had 54 through nine games. Stave led the Badgers to points on four of their final five drives vs. Nebraska on Oct. 10 as UW overcame a fourth-quarter deficit. That included a 10-play, 70-yard drive to the Nebraska 21 yard line that ended with a missed field goal attempt with 1:26 to play. Getting the ball back with 1:03 to play, Stave then orchestrated a 6-play, 42-yard drive to the Nebraska 28 that set up the game-winning 46-yard field goal with 0:04 remaining. Stave went 9-for-14 for 132 yards in the fourth quarter vs. Nebraska, including a 6-for-9 mark for 98 yards on the Badgers final two drives. Stave has yard games to his credit, the second-most in school history. Only John Stocco (17) has more. Junior RB Dare Ogunbowale recorded the first receptions of his career vs. Alabama, tallying six catches for 39 yards. He is now the Badgers third-leading receiver with 249 yards on 27 catches this year. Sophomore TE Troy Fumagalli caught his first touchdown pass at Nebraska on Oct. 10 and now owns 22 catches for 235 yards on the year. After making his first career catch vs. Alabama, sophomore WR Jazz Peavy owns 12 grabs for 139 yards. Senior FB Derek Watt has 11 catches for 95 yards in eight games. He had three receptions in 2013 and none in NO COMBINATION LOCK A year after fielding the same starting five in each of the Badgers 14 games, Wisconsin s offensive line has seen five different starting combinations in nine games this season (See chart, Page 27). The constant has been senior LT Tyler Marz, who has started all nine games this year, and 36 straight dating back to the beginning of the 2013 season. Redshirt freshman Michael Deiter also has started all nine games, seven as UW s left guard at two at center. Senior Walker Williams has started at both guard positions, as has redshirt freshman Micah Kapoi. The Badgers have had three starters at right tackle, with sophomore Hayden Biegel starting the first four games, redshirt freshman Jacob Maxwell earning the start against Iowa and redshirt freshman Beau Benzschawel making the start in UW s last four games. WINNING WAYS At (.739), Wisconsin is one of just 11 Power Five programs to win 100 games since the start of the 2005 season and ranks No. 8 in terms of winning percentage: WINNING PERCENTAGE, 2005-PRESENT (POWER 5) Rk. With their running game rolling, the Badgers (5-2, 2-1 Big Ten) overpowered Maryland (5-3, 2-2) in every facet of the game. Gordon had his three scores in the first half, when Wisconsin raced out to a 24-0 halftime lead on a picture-perfect fall afternoon. Joel Stave threw for two scores in the second half. Wisconsin brought Maryland s five-game road winning streak to an emphatic end. The Terps were held to 175 yards of total offense, 227 below their season average. Most of the yardage came late in the blowout loss. Fresh off a bye, the Badgers even dusted off a couple trick plays, including punter Drew Meyer s floating pass to open tight end Troy Fumagalli over the middle for a 17-yard gain on fourth-and-9 from the Maryland 36. It set up a 36-yard field goal by Rafael Gaglianone to give Wisconsin a 10-0 lead at 3:46 of the first quarter. Maryland fumbled the ball away on the next drive after a handoff bounced off running back Brandon Ross chest. Linebacker Vince Biegel pounced on the ball, and Gordon barreled in from a yard out six plays later for a 17-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter. STATISTICAL MATCHUP: WISCONSIN VS. 9 GAME 10: WISCONSIN VS. MARYLAND HEAD COACH PAUL CHRYST HEAD COACH PAUL CHRYST FIRST SEASON It turns out you can go home again. At least that s the case for Paul Chryst, the Madison native, three-time Badgers letterwinner and eight-year assistant coach at Wisconsin. On Dec. 17, 2014, Chryst returned to his roots when he was introduced as the 30th head coach in UW history. Before spending the last three seasons as the head coach at Pittsburgh, where he led the Panthers to three consecutive bowl appearances, Chryst oversaw the most explosive offenses in Wisconsin history. During his last two seasons as UW s offensive coordinator (2010 and 2011), the Badgers set a multitude of school and Big Ten records. With current Green Bay Packers quarterback Scott Tolzien at the helm in 2010, UW averaged more than 40.0 points a game for the first time in school history, ranking fifth in the country with 41.5 points per contest. On the way to their first Big Ten title since 1999, the Badgers scored at least 70 points three times. As a team, Wisconsin set a Big Ten record with a.732 completion percentage while also tying the conference record for rushing touchdowns (48). The following season, UW did the unthinkable and improved upon that dynamic season. In the one and only year they were united, Chryst and quarterback Russell Wilson combined on a season for the ages. Wilson set the FBS record for pass efficiency (191.8) while setting school records for passing yards (3,175) and passing touchdowns (33 - second-most in Big Ten history). Not to be outdone, junior running back Montee Ball etched his own name in the NCAA record book, tying Barry Sanders single-season record with 39 touchdowns. Ball ran for 1,923 yards and was a Heisman Trophy finalist. For the second-straight season, the Badgers had three first-team All-Americans with center Peter Konz and guard Kevin Zeitler joining Ball. The Badgers averaged 44.1 points per game, sixth-best in the country. Not only was that a school record, but it s the third-best mark in the Big Ten since In fact, UW led the conference in scoring in each of Chryst s last three seasons, with the final two both ranking among the top five in the league since Chryst s last stint in Madison lasted seven years, serving as UW s co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach in 2005 and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from During those seasons, Wisconsin compiled a (.761) record, winning at least 10 games five times. Chryst-led offenses are responsible for six of the top 10 total offense seasons, three of the top four scoring offenses, three of the top five third-down conversion percentages, three of the top four completion percentage seasons and five of the top seven individual pass efficiency seasons in school history. In total, the Badgers averaged 34.1 points and yards of total offense in Chryst s seven years at the helm. Both of those were tops in the Big Ten over that span. Each of UW s top four quarterbacks in terms of single-season passing yards were tutored by Chryst. In his seven seasons as offensive coordinator, Wisconsin ranked fifth in the country and best in the Big Ten in pass efficiency (148.1). UW s 8.5 yards per pass attempt over those seven seasons was second-best in the country. On the ground, the Badgers averaged yards per game, tops in the Big Ten and fourth among Power Five conference teams. Since the start of the 2004 season, the Badgers have compiled a 73-8 record (.901) at Camp Randall Stadium. Ohio State (75) and LSU (73) are the only teams with at least 73 home wins over that span. The Badgers have allowed 10 or fewer points at home on 30 occasions since the start of the 2004 season. Eight of Wisconsin s eight shutouts since 1999 (65-0 vs. Temple in 2005; 14-0 vs. San Diego State in 2006; 37-0 vs. Purdue in 2009; 35-0 vs. Oregon State in 2011; 45-0 vs. UMass and 48-0 vs. Tennessee Tech in 2013; 58-0 vs. Miami (Ohio); 28-0 vs. Hawai i in 2015) have occurred at Camp Randall Stadium. Including its win over Ohio State in 2010 Wisconsin owns a 4-5 record all-time against No. 1 teams in Camp Randall Stadium. Including its unblemished home record in 2014, UW has compiled a 7-0 record at Camp Randall Stadium five times (2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011). Wisconsin won 21 consecutive games at Camp Randall from Oct. 31, 2009 to Oct. 27, That is the secondlongest home winning streak in school history, trailing only the 25 in a row the Badgers won from Camp Randall Stadium, which opened in 1917, is the fourth-oldest Bowl Subdivision stadium in the nation. The only older on-campus facilities are: Georgia Tech (1913), Mississippi State (1914) and Cincinnati (1916). The Camp Randall grounds were used as a Civil War training site. It also held Confederate soldiers, many of whom died and were laid to rest on the west side of Madison. The area known as soldiers rest is the northernmost Confederate cemetery in the United States. Camp Randall Stadium served as a living quarters for students and military personnel during the 1940s. Dormitories were built underneath the east-side stands. Approximately 150 men lived there.
