Taylor leads the Big Ten and all FBS freshmen in rushing, at yards per game, and is averaging 7.0 yards per carry. Taylor s 1,806 rushing yards already rank as the 2nd-most recorded by a UW freshman (See list, Page 16) and rank 3rd in FBS history for a freshman. Taylor needs 120 yards to surpass Adrian Peterson at the top of the official FBS freshman rushing list (which excludes bowl game stats prior to 2002): NCAA FRESHMAN RUSHING LEADERS Att. That total would also be the 13th-best mark by any player in NCAA history. Taylor reached 1,000 rushing yards in his 7th game, matching the FBS freshman record for fewest games needed to hit 1,000. He joined Florida s Emmitt Smith (1987), San Diego State s Marshall Faulk (1991), Oklahoma s Adrian Peterson (2004), North Texas Jamario Thomas (2004) and Wisconsin s own P.J. Hill (2006). Taylor joined Smith, Faulk, Peterson and Thomas in achieving the feat as a true freshman. Taylor also became the fastest UW freshman to reach 1,000 yards in terms of carries. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark on his 130th attempt, breaking James White s freshman record of 138 carries from the 2010 season. FASTEST TO 1,000 YARDS, SEASON UW Att. DEFENSE DOMINATING AGAIN Wisconsin has had 3 defensive coordinators in as many seasons, but the Badgers are once again one of the nation s best units under first-year DC and Broyles Award semifinalist Jim Leonhard. The Badgers led the nation in scoring defense in 2015 (13.7 ppg), ranked 4th in that category in 2016 (15.6 ppg) and are once again fantastic in 2017 (12.0 ppg), ranking 2nd: WISCONSIN DEFENSE RANKS FBS Category Rank Avg. Defensively, UW has allowed only 12 TDs in 12 games (3 of the TDs scored on the Badgers have been defensive touchdowns). Over the last 7 games, UW's defense has allowed just 5 touchdowns. Wisconsin has held 6 of its 12 opponents to 10 or fewer points. Northwestern (24) is the only team to score more than 17 points on the Badgers' defense this season. Wisconsin has held 10 of its 12 opponents under 300 yards of total offense including each of the last 7. Georgia is the only other FBS team to hold 10 opponents under 300 total yards this season. The Badgers held 5 of 9 conference foes Northwestern (244), Purdue (221), Iowa (66), Michigan (234) and Minnesota (133) under 250 total yards. WORTH ANOTHER LOOK Looking back at Wisconsin's fantastic defense in its final 3 wins of the regular season over Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota: UW surrendered just 66 total yards to Iowa on Nov. 11, the fewest yards it has allowed to a Big Ten opponent and the second-lowest opponent yardage total in UW history (Temple had 45 in 2005). The Badgers held Iowa to 66 total yards just a week after the Hawkeyes rolled up 487 yards and scored 7 touchdowns in a win over Ohio State Iowa was 0-for-13 on third down and faced an average of 7.8 yards to go on its third-down attempts. UW held the Hawkeyes to just 25 rushing yards, its fewest allowed to a Big Ten opponent since Penn State managed 23 yards in Iowa s 41 passing yards is the lowest mark by a Badgers opponent since Western Kentucky had 28 yards in Wisconsin limited Michigan to 234 total yards and 10 points, both season lows, on Nov. 18. The Badgers limited Michigan to just 58 rushing yards, the Wolverines' lowest rushing total this season (previous low was 102 vs. Michigan State). Wisconsin held Minnesota to just 133 total yards, the third team that UW has held under 200 yards this season BYU 192, Iowa 66. BACKED UP, NO BACKING DOWN Wisconsin s defense has taken over in sudden change situations 18 times this season (following 9 interceptions, 8 fumbles and a blocked punt) and has allowed opponents to convert just 6 of those 18 opportunities into scores 3 TDs and 3 FGs. Wisconsin s defense has been at its best when defending a short field. Of the 14 opponent drives that have started in Badgers territory including a Maryland drive that originated on the UW 5-yard line only 3 have found the end zone. RED MEANS STOP The Badgers lead the nation in opponent touchdown percentage in the red zone at 30.0%, allowing TDs on just 9 the 30 opponent drives that have traveled inside the Wisconsin 20 yard line. TCU ranks No. 2 nationally, at 35.7%. UW also ranks No. 4 among Power Five teams in overall red zone scoring defense, allowing points on 70.0% (21 of 30) of opponents red zone drives. That includes 9 TDs and 12 field goals. Only TCU (60.7%), Virginia Tech (66.7%) and USC (68.9%) have been more stingy inside the 20. PASS AT YOUR PERIL Wisconsin ranks No. 1 nationally in passing efficiency defense, holding opponents to a pass efficiency rating of just Alabama (98.9) is the only other FBS teams with an opponent rating of less than 100. Breaking down the components of passing efficiency, the Badgers defense ranks among the nation s top 15 in four categories: WISCONSIN PASSING DEFENSE RANKS FBS Category Mark Rank Opp. Completion Pct. 49.3% 4th Opp. Yards per Attempt 5.5 T-1st Passing TDs Allowed 8 T-2nd Interceptions By 15 T-15th Wisconsin has recorded 81 passes defended (66 pass breakups and 15 interceptions), the second-most of any FBS team. Iowa ranks No. 1 nationally, with 89 passes defended. The Badgers average of 6.8 passes defended per game is a major improvement over last season s mark of 5.7 an average that was still good enough to rank 11th among FBS programs in The Badgers have logged a combined 50 passes defended (43 PBUs, 7 interceptions) over their last 7 games, allowing opponents to complete just 42.1% of their passes during that stretch. Only 1 of those 7 opponents completed better than 50% of its passes (Indiana, 58.8%). Junior CB Nick Nelson is leading the way with a nation-leading 20 pass breakups, the best single-season total in UW history (see list, Page 15). That includes 10 PBUs over the last 5 weeks. Nelson leads the nation in pass breakups (20), leading Ohio's Bradd Ellis (18) and Iowa s Josh Jackson (18) in that category. Nelson is tied for 2nd nationally in total passes defended, with 20, trailing Jackson s total of 25 (18 PBUs and 7 interceptions). Nelson s current average of 1.7 passes defended per game would have been the nation s top mark in 9 of the last 10 seasons (Houston s William Jackson III had 2.2 to lead the country in 2015). PLAYING TAKEAWAY A year after matching the single-season program record with 22 interceptions in Leonhard s first season in charge of the secondary in 2016, UW has picked off 15 passes in its first 12 games of Wisconsin has turned 4 of those picks into quick points: INTERCEPTION RETURN TDs IN 2017 Player Opponent Distance Joe Ferguson Utah State 99 yards Natrell Jamerson Northwestern 36 yards Chris Orr Nebraska 78 yards T.J. Edwards Maryland 54 yards UW s 4 interception return TDs matching Duke and Iowa for the second-most of any team behind Texas (5) are the most for the Badgers in a season since at least Wisconsin also has defensive scores on a pair of safeties (Mike Maskalunas at BYU and D'Cota Dixon vs. Northwestern) and a fumble recovery TD (Leon Jacobs vs. Iowa). The Badgers have scored 118 points off their 23 forced turnovers this season (15 INTs, 8 fumble recoveries), while allowing opponents to score just 54 points off the 21 turnovers UW has lost. Dating back to last season, the Badgers have forced 37 turnovers over their last 17 games including 7 games in which UW recorded at least 3 takeaways. The Badgers have forced 10 turnovers in their last 5 games (5 interceptions and 5 fumbles), tallying 3 takeaways each vs. Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. SACK ATTACK The Badgers have spent more time in opponents backfields this season, racking up 37.0 sacks to lead the Big Ten and rank in a tie for 6th nationally. USC (41.0) and Northern Illinois (41.0) lead the nation, followed by Clemson (40.0), TCU (40.0) and Texas A&M (40.0). Wisconsin has logged 17 sacks over the last 5 weeks: 5.0 at Illinois, 4.0 at Indiana, 4.0 vs. Iowa, 2.0 vs. Michigan and 2.0 at Minnesota. UW s average of 3.3 is nearly a full sack per game better than its mark of 2.4 sacks per 6

Watt (Pittsburgh) and fourth-round selection Vince Biegel (Green Bay). Wisconsin has not averaged 3.0 sacks per game in a season since 1998, when the Badgers finished their 12-game slate with 42 sacks (3.5 per game). Senior OLB Garret Dooley ranks 3rd in the Big Ten with 7.5 sacks on the season, trailing only Northwestern's Joe Gaziano (8.0) and Michigan's Chase Winovich (8.0). Wisconsin senior DE Alec James (5.5) and junior OLB Andrew Van Ginkel (5.5) rank in a tie for 12th in the league. Senior OLB Leon Jacobs also has logged 3.5 sacks and junior ILB Ryan Connelly has added 3.0. Dooley and Jacobs are first-year starters, while Van Ginkel is in his first season at UW after transferring from Iowa Western Community College. The trio mark the latest success story for Wisconsin OLBs coach Tim Tibesar, the 2015 Football Scoop Co-Linebackers Coach of the Year. In his first 2 seasons at UW, Tibesar mentored a trio of NFL draft picks in Biegel, Watt and 2015 Big Ten Linebacker of the Year Joe Schobert. Up front, Alec James' 5.5 sacks are the most for a Wisconsin defensive lineman since J.J. Watt racked up 7.0 sacks in his final season at UW in Wisconsin tallied 8.0 sacks vs. Northwestern, UW s highest sack total since logging 8.0 vs. Penn State in Dooley led the way vs. Northwestern, contributing to 5 of the Badgers 8 sacks (2 solo, 3 assist) to finish with a total of 3.5 sacks. Dooley s 5.0 TFLs vs. Northwestern rank in a tie for the fifth-highest single-game total in school history, and the most since Alex Lewis had a school-record 6.5 TFLs vs. Purdue on Oct. 18, Including a season-high 11 tackles for loss vs. Northwestern, the Badgers are averaging 6.9 TFLs per game on the year well ahead of last year s average of 5.3 TFLs per game. UW has recorded at least 8.0 tackles for loss 4 times this season, something the Badgers failed to do once in Wisconsin has recorded at least 6.0 TFLs in 10 of its 12 games this year. NOWHERE TO RUN The Badgers have held 8 of their 12 opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards including 4 straight while giving up an average of just 80.5 yards per game, the nation s No. 1 mark The only UW unit to allow fewer yards per game in a season was the famed "Hard Rocks" defense of 1951, which gave up just 66.8 rushing yards per contest. Wisconsin (966) is the only FBS teams to allow fewer than 1,000 rushing yards so far this season. Dating back to last season, UW has held 12 of its last 18 opponents under 100 yards. Wisconsin allowed Northwestern to rush for just 25 yards on Sept. 30, its fewest allowed to a Big Ten opponent since holding Michigan State to 25 rushing yards on Nov. 1, The Badgers then matched that performance by giving up just 25 rushing yards to Iowa on Nov. 11. Wisconsin has allowed just one individual 100-yard rusher Nebraska s Devine Ozigbo (112 yards on Oct. 7, 2017) in its last 25 games. UW has allowed just 4 rushing touchdowns on the year, the fewest in the FBS. NO BIG DEAL The Badgers are limiting big plays, having allowed just 32 plays of 20-plus yards. Among Power Five teams, only Washington (31) has allowed fewer explosive plays. Wisconsin is the nation's only team to not allow a run of 30 yards or longer this season. The longest run against the Badgers was a 28-yarder by Nebraska's Devine Ozigbo on Oct. 7. SECOND HALF STARS In 12 games, opposing offenses have scored just 5 touchdowns on Wisconsin s defense in the second half this season. Not only has the Badgers defense been stingy after halftime, but the unit also has put up 25 points of its own in the second half of games: interception return TDs vs. Utah State (Joe Ferguson) and Northwestern (Natrell Jamerson), a fumble return TD (Leon Jacobs vs. Iowa) and safeties against BYU (Mike Maskalunas sack) and Northwestern (D Cota Dixon sack). The Badgers have allowed only 387 rushing yards (32.3 per game) and 1 rushing touchdown in the second half of games this season. OFFENSE ON POINT The Badgers have topped the 30-point mark in 9 of their 12 games this season. Dating back to last year, the Badgers have reached the 30-point threshold in 13 of their last 17 games and a total of 19 times under Chryst. The Badgers rank third in the Big Ten in scoring offense (34.8 ppg), a mark that matches the 2013 UW squad for the thirdbest scoring average in school history. UW also stands third in total offense (426.0 ypg) among Big Ten teams this season, with Ohio State (529.8) leading the league. Wisconsin ranks second in the Big Ten in rushing, at yards per game, trailing only Ohio State (250.3). Wisconsin ranks second in the league in passing efficiency (155.4), trailing only Ohio State (164.2). UW also leads the conference at 8.8 yards per passing attempt (the Buckeyes own the No. 2 mark, at 8.4). 7 7

Only 3 of the 130 FBS teams Army, Wisconsin and Colorado State (50.6%) have converted at least 50.0% of their third-down tries this season. Conversely, the Badgers defense has allowed opponents to convert just 28.8% of their third-down attempts, the 7th-best mark in the FBS (Washington State leads the nation, at 24.8%). ALL ON THE LINE Wisconsin s offensive line which includes a starting five comprised of two juniors (LT Michael Deiter and RG Beau Benzschawel), two sophomores (LG Jon Dietzen and RT David Edwards) and a redshirt freshman (C Tyler Biadasz) was named to the midseason honor roll for the Joe Moore Award, which honors the nation s outstanding offensive line. Running behind that group, Wisconsin ranks 10th among Power Five teams in rushing, averaging yards per game. In terms of pass protection, the Badgers didn t yield a sack at Minnesota on Nov. 25, marking the third time this season that UW didn t allow a sack (also vs. FAU and vs. Maryland). The Badgers have allowed just 17 sacks, the fewest of any Big Ten team. Deiter got the chance to flash his athleticism at Illinois on Oct. 28, taking a lateral from QB Alex Hornibrook the first touch of his career and charging in for a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. HORNIBROOK HITS THE TARGET Sophomore QB Alex Hornibrook ranks 10th among Power Five quarterbacks in pass efficiency rating (155.9) by completing 63.9% of his passes for 2,157 yards, 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Among Big Ten signal callers, only Ohio State's J.T. Barrett (165.0) has a better efficiency mark. Hornibrook's efficiency mark of is the 3rd-best single-season mark in school history, trailing only Russell Wilson (191.8, 2011) and Scott Tolzien (165.9, 2010). Hornibrook s mark of 8.8 yards per attempt ranks 8th among Power Five QBs, a list led by Oklahoma s Baker Mayfield (11.8). The red zone has been a comfortable place to pass for Hornibrook, who owns a pass efficiency rating of inside the 20 the best mark of any FBS player with at least 20 red-zone attempts. He s gone 24-for-35 (.686) for 228 yards, 17 TDs and 1 interception in the red zone. Hornibrook's 21 TD passes are tied for the 3rd-best single-season total in UW history. He owns 30 career TD passes, which ranks 9th all-time at Wisconsin. See lists, Page 16 Hornibrook's 3,419 career yards rank him 11th in UW history. He needs 280 yards to crack the Badgers' all-time top 10. The Badgers have won Hornibrook s last 18 starts the nation s longest active win streak by a quarterback dating back to Oct. 22, Hornibrook owns an 19-2 (.905) record as the Badgers starter, including a 16-2 (.889) mark in Big Ten play. His 19 wins rank as the seventh-most in school history, while his.905 win percentage is the best of any UW quarterback with at least 15 starts. See list, Page 16 Hornibrook has thrown for 200-plus yards in 4 games this year and missed that mark by 1 yard vs. Purdue (199) and 3 yards vs. Northwestern (197). He entered the season with 1 career 200-yard game (214 vs. Ohio State on Oct. 15, 2016) to his credit. Hornibrook s 18-for-19 (.947) passing performance at BYU on Sept. 16 put him in elite company alongside former Badgers QB Russell Wilson as the only major college quarterbacks since 2000 to complete at least 94 percent of their passes in a road game. Wilson went 16-for-17 (.941) at Minnesota on Nov. 12, Hornibrook's 18-for-19 showing set UW's single-game completion percentage record at 94.7%, breaking the record held by Darrell Bevell from a 17-for-18 (94.4%) performance vs. Northwestern in IT S GOOD FOR GAGLIANONE Junior K Rafael Gaglianone is 12-for-14 on field goal attempts this season. Gaglianone, who missed all but 3 games last season due to injury, has converted 22 of his last 25 field goal attempts, dating back to the 2015 Holiday Bowl. The Badgers have won 22 consecutive games and are 33-3 overall when Gaglianone has converted a field goal. Gaglianone converted a career-long 52-yard field goal on Oct. 28 at Illinois. The kick was the third 50-yarder of Gaglianone s career (51 vs. LSU on Aug. 30, 2014; 50 vs. Iowa on Nov. 22, 2014), matching Taylor Mehlhaff and Philip Welch for the most 50-yarders in school history. The field goal made Gaglianone just the fourth player in school history to score at least 300 points (see list, Page 16), and he now has 331 for his career. Gaglianone also holds the Badgers school record for game-winning field goals, with 4. FAMILIAR FACES Wisconsin s football staff includes 13 former UW players: head coach Paul Chryst; assistant coaches Jim Leonhard, Joe Rudolph and Mickey Turner; graduate assistants Jeff Duckworth, Kevin Claxton, Al Johnson and Pat Muldoon; quality control coordinators Jon Budmayr, Antonio Fenelus and Taylor Mehlhaff; and strength and conditioning coaches Ross Kolodziej and Kyle Costigan. 8

LAST MEETING STATISTICAL MATCHUP: WISCONSIN VS. OHIO STATE #2 OHIO ST. 30, #8 WISCONSIN 23 OT OCT. 15, 2016 MADISON, Wis. After leading for three quarters, No. 8 Wisconsin fell to No. 2 Ohio State, 30-23, in overtime at a sold-out Camp Randall Stadium. Tied up at the end of regulation, OSU s J.T. Barrett threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to receiver Noah Brown to capitalize on the Buckeyes' overtime possession and earn the go-ahead score. Wisconsin s ensuing drive down to the 4-yard line ended with a sack of quarterback Alex Hornibrook on fourth-and-goal to the end the nighttime nailbiter. Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst dug deep into the playbook to throw off the Buckeyes in the first half, running receiver Jazz Peavy on jet sweeps and passing out of tight formations. The Badgers created third-down situations for Hornibrook, including picking up another first down in the fourth quarter after faking a run before he threw a shovel pass to tight end Troy Fumagalli for a 4-yard gain. Corey Clement ran for 164 yards on 25 carries for Wisconsin, earning yards for the Badgers balanced offense. Wisconsin collected 236 yards rushing and Hornibrook compiled a career-high 214 yards passing. 10 HEAD COACH PAUL CHRYST HEAD COACH PAUL CHRYST 2016 HAYES SCHEMBECHLER BIG TEN COACH OF THE YEAR Wisconsin football continues to thrive under Paul Chryst s leadership. In his first season as head coach at his alma mater, Chryst led Wisconsin to a 10-3 record in 2015 a run that concluded with a victory over USC in the Holiday Bowl. For an encore, he directed the Badgers to an 11-3 finish in 2016, including a win in the Cotton Bowl and Big Ten West Division championship. Chryst was named the 2016 Hayes-Schembechler Big Ten Coach of the Year and for leading the Badgers to an 11-win season against a schedule that included six matchups with top 10-ranked teams was a national finalist for both The Dodd Trophy and Paul Bear Bryan Coach of the Year awards. A former Wisconsin player and assistant coach and a Madison native, Chryst returned to his roots when he was named the Badgers 30th head coach on Dec. 17, Since then, Chryst has become one of just four coaches in Big Ten history to post double-digit win totals in each of his first two seasons as head coach, joining Michigan legend Fielding Yost and current cotemporaries Jim Harbaugh of Michigan and Urban Meyer of Ohio State. Chryst s 21-6 (.778) overall record marked the best start by a Badgers coach through two seasons, and he is the first UW mentor to win consecutive bowl games to begin a tenure as head coach. UW went 13-4 (.765) in Big Ten games over his first two seasons, with only Ohio State (15-2) posting a better mark in league play across the 2015 and 16 campaigns. Including two seasons at the helm of the program and seven years as the Badgers offensive coordinator, Chryst has overseen some of the nation s best units on both sides of the ball. Across his first two seasons as head coach, Wisconsin boasted one of the nation s truly elite defenses. The Badgers allowed just 14.7 points per game over the 2015 and 2016 seasons, a mark that ranked No. 2 nationally over that span and trailed only Alabama s mark of 14.1 points allowed per contest. Over those two years, Wisconsin also ranked No. 4 in total defense (285.6 yards per game), No. 3 in rushing defense (97.1 ypg) and No. 3 in pass efficiency defense (102.1). During Chryst s seven years as offensive coordinator from , Wisconsin averaged 34.1 points and yards of total offense per game. Both marks were the best in the Big Ten over that span and powered the Badgers to conference titles in 2010 and 2011, remarkable offensive seasons in which UW averaged 41.5 and 44.1 points per game, respectively. Wisconsin had won 10 or more games in a season just three times before Chryst joined the Badgers coaching staff as offensive coordinator in In his nine seasons on staff since, the Badgers posted double-digit win totals seven times and had an overall record of (.765). Before spending the previous three seasons as the head coach at Pittsburgh, where he led the Panthers to three consecutive bowl appearances, Chryst oversaw the most explosive offenses in UW history as the Badgers offensive coordinator. During those seven seasons, Wisconsin claimed a pair of Big Ten titles while piling up a (.761) overall record. Chryst was a three-time letterwinner at UW, where he earned a degree in political science. He and his wife, Robin, have three children: Katy, JoJo and Danny. 11 THE CHRYST FILE Career Record (6th Season): (.675) Record at Wisconsin: 33-6 (3rd Season) Big Ten Record: 22-4 (3rd Season) Bowl Record: 3-1 (.750) Birthdate: Nov. 17, 1965 Hometown: Madison, Wis. Originally opened in 1917, the venerable venue celebrates its centennial in What now stands as the oldest stadium in the Big Ten, Camp Randall was originally used as a Civil War training site. This hallowed ground has seen many upgrades since officially becoming the home of the Badgers in During the Civil War, nearly 70,000 soldiers trained at Camp Randall, which also included a hospital and a prison for Confederate soldiers on its grounds. Named for Alexander Randall, the state of Wisconsin s first wartime governor, the Camp Randall land was returned to state fair property after peace was restored nationally. The fair later moved to Milwaukee, and Wisconsin s Civil War veterans urged the legislature to purchase the land. In 1893, the state presented the site to the university as a memorial athletic field. Since then, Camp Randall Stadium has grown from a small venue with wooden bleachers to one of the largest stadiums in the Big Ten with a capacity of 80,321. One of the nation s most historic college football venues, Camp Randall Stadium also happens to be one of the intimidating for opposing teams, and Wisconsin has made the most of the home-field advantage that the raucous atmosphere provides. Though it has only been a tradition at Camp Randall Stadium since 1998, Jump Around is now a defining part of UW game day. Between the third and fourth quarters, Jump Around by House of Pain is played and the 80,000-plus fans delight in doing as the tune instructs. Jump Around was crowned the winner of Sports Illustrated s Greatest College Football Traditions bracket in 2012 and was named the nation s best tradition in votes contested by SiriusXM College Sports Nation in 2014 and Since the start of the 2004 season, the Badgers have compiled a record (.894) at Camp Randall Stadium, matching Oklahoma (76-9,.894) for the second-highest winning percentage among Power Five programs. Only Ohio State (89-10,.899) has won a higher percentage of its home games. Opened in 1917, Camp Randall is the fourth-oldest stadium in the FBS. The only older on-campus facilities are: Georgia Tech (1913), Mississippi State (1914) and Cincinnati (1916). The Camp Randall grounds were used as a Civil War training site. It also held Confederate soldiers, many of whom died and were laid to rest on the west side of Madison. The area known as soldiers rest is the northernmost Confederate cemetery in the United States. Camp Randall Stadium served as a living quarters for students and military personnel during the 1940s. Dormitories were built underneath the east side stands. Approximately 150 men lived there.
