Scoring Defense 2nd 16.0 ppg Total Defense 2nd ypg Defense 2nd ypg Pass Efficiency Defense 2nd Defensively, UW has allowed only 15 TDs from scrimmage in 13 games (3 of the TDs scored on the Badgers have been defensive scores). That matches Alabama (15 in 12 games) for the fewest TDs allowed by a defense this season. Over the last 8 games, UW's defense has allowed just 8 touchdowns. Wisconsin has held 6 of its 13 opponents to 10 or fewer points. Wisconsin has held 10 of its 13 opponents under 300 yards of total offense including 7 of its last 8. Georgia is the only team to hold more opponents (11) under 300 total yards this season. The Badgers held 5 of its 9 foes in conference play Northwestern (244), Purdue (221), Iowa (66), Michigan (234) and Minnesota (133) under 250 total yards. BACKED UP, NO BACKING DOWN Wisconsin s defense has taken over in sudden change situations 19 times this season (following 10 interceptions, 8 fumbles and a blocked punt) and has allowed opponents to convert just 7 of those 19 opportunities into scores 4 TDs and 3 FGs. Wisconsin s defense has been at its best when defending a short field. Of the 15 opponent drives that have started in Badgers territory including a Maryland drive that originated on the UW 5-yard line only 3 have found the end zone. RED MEANS STOP The Badgers lead the nation in opponent touchdown percentage in the red zone at 30.3%, allowing TDs on just 10 the 33 opponent drives that have traveled inside the Wisconsin 20 yard line. TCU ranks No. 2 nationally, at 38.7%. UW also ranks No. 6 among Power Five teams in overall red zone scoring defense, allowing points on 72.7% (24 of 33) of opponents red zone drives. That includes 10 TDs and 14 field goals. Only TCU (64.5%), Virginia Tech (66.7%), USC (70%), Virginia (70.3%) and Northwestern (71.1%) have been more stingy inside the 20. PASS AT YOUR PERIL Wisconsin ranks No. 1 nationally in passing efficiency defense, holding opponents to a pass efficiency rating of just Alabama (98.9) is the only other FBS teams with an opponent rating of less than 100. GAME NOTES Breaking down the components of passing efficiency, the Badgers defense ranks among the nation s top 10 in four categories: WISCONSIN PASSING DEFENSE RANKS FBS Category Mark Rank Opp. Completion Pct. 49.1% 4th Opp. Yards per Attempt 5.7 3rd Passing TDs Allowed 10 T-7th Interceptions By 17 T-9th Wisconsin has recorded 85 passes defended (68 pass breakups and 17 interceptions), the second-most of any FBS team. Iowa ranks No. 1 nationally, with 89 passes defended. The Badgers average of 6.5 passes defended per game is a major improvement over last season s mark of 5.7 an average that was still good enough to rank 11th among FBS programs in The Badgers have logged a combined 54 passes defended (45 PBUs, 9 interceptions) on 209 opponent passing attempts over their last 8 games (25.8%). UW allowed an opponent completion percentage of 42.6% during that 8-game stretch and only 1 of those 8 opponents managed to complete at least 50% of its passes (Indiana, 58.8%). Junior CB Nick Nelson is leading the way with a nation-leading 20 pass breakups, the best single-season total in UW history (see list, Page 10). Nelson leads the nation in pass breakups (20), leading Iowa s Josh Jackson (18) and Ohio's Bradd Ellis (18) in that category. Nelson is tied for 2nd nationally in total passes defended, with 20, trailing Jackson s total of 25 (18 PBUs and 7 interceptions). Nelson isn't the Badgers' only ball hawk, with senior S Natrell Jamerson (10 PBUs, 2 INTs) logging 12 passes defended, junior ILB T.J. Edwards (7 PBUs, 4 INTs) adding 11 and senior CB Derrick Tindal (9 PBUs, 1 INT) recording 10. PLAYING TAKEAWAY A year after matching the single-season program record with 22 interceptions in Leonhard s first season in charge of the secondary in 2016, UW has picked off 17 passes in Wisconsin has turned 5 of those picks into quick points: INTERCEPTION RETURN TDs IN 2017 Player Opponent Distance Joe Ferguson Utah State 99 yards Natrell Jamerson Northwestern 36 yards Chris Orr Nebraska 78 yards T.J. Wisconsin also has defensive scores on a pair of safeties (Mike Maskalunas at BYU and D'Cota Dixon vs. Northwestern) and a fumble recovery TD (Leon Jacobs vs. Iowa). The Badgers have scored 136 points off their 26 forced turnovers this season (17 6

The Badgers have forced 13 turnovers in their last 6 games (7 interceptions and 6 fumbles), tallying 3 takeaways each vs. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Ohio State. SACK ATTACK The Badgers have spent more time in opponents backfields this season, racking up 39.0 sacks to tie for the Big Ten lead and rank in a tie for 8th nationally. Clemson (44.0), USC (43.0) and Miami (43.0) boast the nation's top sack totals. UW s average of 3.0 is well ahead of its mark of 2.4 sacks per game in Incredibly, the Badgers have made that jump despite the loss of both of their play-making outside linebackers from last season: firstround NFL draft pick T.J. Watt (Pittsburgh) and fourth-round selection Vince Biegel (Green Bay). Wisconsin has not averaged 3.0 sacks per game in a season since 1998, when the Badgers finished their 12-game slate with 42 sacks (3.5 per game). Senior OLB Garret Dooley ranks 3rd in the Big Ten with 7.5 sacks on the season, trailing only Northwestern's Joe Gaziano (8.0) and Michigan's Chase Winovich (8.0). Wisconsin senior DE Alec James (5.5) and junior OLB Andrew Van Ginkel (5.5) rank in a tie for 13th in the league. Senior OLB Leon Jacobs also has logged 3.5 sacks and junior ILB Ryan Connelly has added 3.0. Dooley and Jacobs are first-year starters, while Van Ginkel is in his first season at UW after transferring from Iowa Western Community College. The trio mark the latest success story for Wisconsin OLBs coach Tim Tibesar, the 2015 Football Scoop Co-Linebackers Coach of the Year. In his first 2 seasons at UW, Tibesar mentored a trio of NFL draft picks in Biegel, Watt and 2015 Big Ten Linebacker of the Year Joe Schobert. Up front, Alec James' 5.5 sacks are the most for a Wisconsin defensive lineman since J.J. Watt racked up 7.0 sacks in his final season at UW in Wisconsin tallied 8.0 sacks vs. Northwestern, UW s highest sack total since logging 8.0 vs. Penn State in Dooley led the way vs. Northwestern, contributing to 5 of the Badgers 8 sacks (2 solo, 3 assist) to finish with a total of 3.5 sacks. Dooley s 5.0 TFLs vs. Northwestern rank in a tie for the fifth-highest single-game total in school history, and the most since Alex Lewis had a school-record 6.5 TFLs vs. Purdue on Oct. 18, Including a season-high 11 tackles for loss vs. Northwestern, the Badgers are averaging 6.5 TFLs per game on the year well ahead of last year s average of 5.3 TFLs per game. GAME NOTES UW has recorded at least 8.0 tackles for loss 4 times this season, something the Badgers failed to do once in Wisconsin has recorded at least 6.0 TFLs in 10 of its 13 games this year. NOWHERE TO RUN The Badgers have held 8 of their 13 opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards while giving up an average of just 92.6 yards per game, the nation s No. 2 mark behind Washington (92.3 ypg). Dating back to last season, UW has held 12 of its last 19 opponents under 100 yards. Wisconsin allowed Northwestern to rush for just 25 yards on Sept. 30, its fewest allowed to a Big Ten opponent since holding Michigan State to 25 rushing yards on Nov. 1, The Badgers then matched that performance by giving up just 25 rushing yards to Iowa on Nov. 11. Wisconsin has allowed just 2 individual 100- yard rushers Nebraska s Devine Ozigbo (112 yards on Oct. 7, 2017) and Ohio State's J.K Dobbins (174 yards on Dec. 2, 2017) in its last 26 games. UW has allowed just 5 rushing touchdowns on the year, matching Clemson for the fewest in the FBS. That also matches UW's 1998 squad (5 in 12 games) for the fewest in school history. NO BIG DEAL The Badgers have allowed just 36 plays of 20-plus yards, matching Alabama for the second-fewest in the FBS. Only Washington (31) has allowed fewer explosive plays. SECOND HALF STARS Wisconsin has outscored opponents in the second half this season, including a margin of in the fourth quarter. In 13 games, opposing offenses have scored just 5 touchdowns on Wisconsin s defense in the second half this season. Not only has the Badgers defense been stingy after halftime, but the unit also has put up 25 points of its own in the second half of games: interception return TDs vs. Utah State (Joe Ferguson) and Northwestern (Natrell Jamerson), a fumble return TD (Leon Jacobs vs. Iowa) and safeties against BYU (Mike Maskalunas sack) and Northwestern (D Cota Dixon sack). The Badgers have allowed an average of just 38.3 rushing yards in the second half of games this season while surrendering only 1 rushing touchdown after halftime. After Ohio State used 3 big plays to put 21 points on the board in the first half of the Big Ten Football Championship Game, the Badgers' defense held the Buckeyes to just 6 points and 140 total yards after halftime. OFFENSE ON POINT The Badgers have topped the 30-point mark in 9 of their 13 games this season. Dating back to last year, the Badgers have reached 7

Wisconsin ranks 3rd in the league in passing efficiency (145.9), trailing Ohio State (161.8) and Penn State (153.5). UW also ranks in a tie with Ohio State for the conference lead at 8.4 yards per passing attempt. THIRD DOWN LOOKING UP The Badgers have converted 48.8% of their third-down attempts on the year the best mark by a Power Five school. Ohio State (48.6%) is second on that list. Conversely, the Badgers defense has allowed opponents to convert just 29.6% of their third-down attempts, the 7th-best mark in the FBS (Washington State leads the nation, at 24.8%). UW set a school record last season by holding opponents to 27.9% on third down. HORNIBROOK HITS THE TARGET Sophomore QB Alex Hornibrook has completed 61.6% of his passes for 2,386 yards, 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, good for a pass efficiency rating of Among Big Ten signal callers, only Ohio State's J.T. Barrett (162.0) and Penn State's Trace McSorley (153.6) have a better efficiency mark. The red zone has been a comfortable place to pass for Hornibrook, who owns a pass efficiency rating of inside the 20 the second-best mark of any FBS player with at least 20 red-zone attempts behind only Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield (256.6). He s gone 24-for-38 (.632) for 228 yards, 17 TDs and 2 interceptions in the red zone. Hornibrook's 21 TD passes are tied for the 3rd-best single-season total in UW history. He owns 30 career TD passes, which ranks 9th all-time at Wisconsin. See lists, Page 10 Hornibrook's 3,648 career yards rank him 11th in UW history. He needs 51 yards to crack the Badgers' all-time top 10. UW's loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten Football Championship Game snapped an 18-game win streak for Hornibrook as the Badgers' starter, which was the nation s longest active win streak by a quarterback and the longest since Florida State's Jameis Winston won 26 straight from Hornibrook owns an 19-3 (.864) record as the Badgers starter, including a 16-2 (.889) mark in Big Ten play. His 19 wins rank as the seventh-most in school history, while his.864 win percentage is the best of any UW quarterback with at least 15 starts. See list, Page 10 GAME NOTES Hornibrook has thrown for 200-plus yards in 5 games this year and missed that mark by 1 yard vs. Purdue (199) and 3 yards vs. Northwestern (197). He entered the season with 1 career 200-yard game (214 vs. Ohio State on Oct. 15, 2016) to his credit. Hornibrook s 18-for-19 (.947) passing performance at BYU on Sept. 16 put him in elite company alongside former Badgers QB Russell Wilson as the only major college quarterbacks since 2000 to complete at least 94 percent of their passes in a road game. Wilson went 16-for-17 (.941) at Minnesota on Nov. 12, Hornibrook's 18-for-19 showing set UW's single-game completion percentage record at 94.7%, breaking the record held by Darrell Bevell from a 17-for-18 (94.4%) performance vs. Northwestern in IT S GOOD FOR GAGLIANONE Junior K Rafael Gaglianone is 14-for-16 (.875) on field goal attempts this season. Gaglianone, who missed all but 3 games last season due to injury, has converted 24 of his last 27 field goal attempts, dating back to the 2015 Holiday Bowl. Gaglianone converted a career-long 52-yard field goal on Oct. 28 at Illinois. The kick was the third 50-yarder of Gaglianone s career (51 vs. LSU on Aug. 30, 2014; 50 vs. Iowa on Nov. 22, 2014), matching Taylor Mehlhaff and Philip Welch for the most 50-yarders in school history. The field goal made Gaglianone just the fourth player in school history to score at least 300 points (see list, Page 10), and he now has 338 for his career. Gaglianone holds the UW record for gamewinning field goals, with 4, including kicks to win the Outback Bowl and Holiday Bowl. FAMILIAR FACES Wisconsin s football staff includes 13 former UW players: head coach Paul Chryst; assistant coaches Jim Leonhard, Joe Rudolph and Mickey Turner; graduate assistants Jeff Duckworth, Kevin Claxton, Al Johnson and Pat Muldoon; quality control coordinators Jon Budmayr, Antonio Fenelus and Taylor Mehlhaff; and strength and conditioning coaches Ross Kolodziej and Kyle Costigan. The Badgers are 1 of 2 FBS programs to have alumni as head coach (Paul Chryst), offensive coordinator (Joe Rudolph) and defensive coordinator (Jim Leonhard). Air Force also features alums at its three top spots in head coach Troy Calhoun, OC Mike Thiessen and DC Steve Russ. POLL POSITION Wisconsin has been ranked among the top 10 in each of the last 22 Associated Press Top 25 polls (dating back to Oct. 30, 2016), marking the longest run in school history. Slotted No. 3 for the week of Nov. 26, Wisconsin reached its highest ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 since being ranked 2nd over the course of 2 polls from Oct , 1963.

Sweeping rivals Iowa (Heartland Trophy), Minnesota (Paul Bunyan's Axe) and Nebraska (Freedom Trophy) for the second consecutive season, Wisconsin has won 17 of its last 18 trophy games, dating back to Wisconsin's win over Iowa on Nov. 11 put the Badgers at in Big Ten play, lifting UW's all-time league record above.500 for the first time in 50 years since they were entering a game at Indiana on Nov. 4, By the end of the 1992 season, the Badgers were 62 games under.500 ( ) in Big Ten play all-time. In the 25 seasons since, Wisconsin has posted a record of (.661) in conference play and claimed 6 Big Ten championships. DUAL SPORT SUCCESS Wisconsin has qualified for a bowl game in football and the NCAA tournament in men s basketball for 15 consecutive years the longest streak in NCAA history. The next longest belongs to Texas, which qualified for a bowl and the NCAA tournament 12 straight seasons from to Currently, the next-longest active streak is 4 years, held by North Carolina and Baylor. The Badgers have won a bowl game in football and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men s basketball tournament in each of the last three seasons, making the Badgers only the third team in history to do so in three consecutive years. UW joins Notre Dame ( to ) and Michigan State, which did so in four straight seasons ( to ), in accomplishing that feat of dual-sport success. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS GAME NOTES Wisconsin posted an Academic Progress Rate score of 990 for , the sixthbest mark of any Power Five program. The Badgers had the nation s second-highest mark for (992) and led the FBS in with a score of 998 that remains the highest score by a football team in the 12-year history of the NCAA s APR program. Wisconsin joins Duke, Northwestern and Stanford as the only FBS football teams to earn APR Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA in each of the last five years. 9 9

John Clay had 121 yards rushing and two touchdowns, powering No. 24 Wisconsin past 14th-ranked Miami in the 2009 Champs Sports Bowl. Clay ran through, over and around the Hurricanes to help the Badgers (10-3) earn their first victory over a ranked opponent this season and claim a big win for the Big Ten. Scott Tolzien threw for 260 yards, and Montee Ball added 61 yards rushing for a Wisconsin team touted as too big and too slow for the dynamic Hurricanes. None of that seemed to matter when the Badgers were powering the ball down the field. Miami's Jacory Harris struggled before throwing a touchdown pass to Thearon Collier with 1:22 remaining. The Hurricanes recovered the onside kick, but Harris threw incomplete on fourth down to end any hope of a comeback. Harris, who threw for 188 yards, was slowed by an injured right thumb, a brace around his left leg and a Badgers team that smothered him with five sacks. Wisconsin's running game helped it hold the ball for nearly 40 minutes, leaving little time for Miami to work. WISCONSIN BOWL GAME HISTORY SERIES HISTORY This will be the fifth meeting between Wisconsin and Miami and the second time the two teams have squared off in a bowl game. The last time the two teams met was in the 2009 Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando. Miami opened the scoring with a touchdown just 23 seconds in to the game but UW's defense limited the Hurricanes to just 249 yards of total offense in a victory. The Orange Bowl will be Wisconsin's ninth bowl game in which both teams are ranked in the top 15 of the Associated Press Poll. UW is 3-5 in the previous eight instances, including a win over No. 12 Western Michigan in last year's Cotton Bowl. 13 HEAD COACH PAUL CHRYST HEAD COACH PAUL CHRYST 2016 & 2017 HAYES SCHEMBECHLER BIG TEN COACH OF THE YEAR Wisconsin football continues to thrive under Paul Chryst s leadership. A back-to-back Big Ten Coach of the Year selection, Chryst has become one of just three mentors in league history to post double-digit win totals in each of his first three seasons as head coach, joining Michigan legend Fielding Yost and current Ohio State coach Urban Meyer. He also has piloted UW to a pair of Big Ten West Division crowns and berths in the Big Ten Football Championship Game. In his first season as head coach at his alma mater, Chryst led Wisconsin to a 10-3 record in 2015 a run that concluded with a victory over USC in the Holiday Bowl. For an encore, he directed the Badgers to an 11-3 finish in 2016, including a win in the Cotton Bowl and the Big Ten West Division championship. Chryst was named 2016 Hayes-Schembechler Big Ten Coach of the Year by a vote of his league peers and for leading UW to an 11-win season against a schedule that included six matchups with top 10-ranked teams was a national finalist for both The Dodd Trophy and Paul Bear Bryan Coach of the Year awards. He swept the league s top coaching honors in 2017 after leading the Badgers to another West Division crown, a 12-0 regular season and a No. 3 ranking the program s highest in the AP poll since In addition to repeating as Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year, Chryst was named Dave McClain Big Ten Coach of the Year by a vote of league media. A former Wisconsin player and assistant coach and a Madison native, Chryst returned to his roots when he was named the Badgers 30th head coach on Dec. 17, Including his time as head coach and a stint as the Badgers offensive coordinator, he has overseen some of the nation s best units on both sides of the ball. Across his first three seasons as head coach, Wisconsin boasted one of the nation s truly elite defenses. The Badgers allowed just 14.7 points per game over the 2015 and 2016 seasons, a mark that ranked No. 2 nationally over that span and trailed only Alabama s mark of 14.1 points allowed per contest. Over those two years, Wisconsin also ranked No. 4 in total defense (285.6 yards per game), No. 3 in rushing defense (97.1 ypg) and No. 3 in pass efficiency defense (102.1). During Chryst s seven years as offensive coordinator from , Wisconsin averaged 34.1 points and yards of total offense per game. Both marks were the best in the Big Ten over that span and powered the Badgers to conference titles in 2010 and 2011, remarkable offensive seasons in which UW averaged 41.5 and 44.1 points per game, respectively. Wisconsin had won 10 or more games in a season just three times before Chryst joined the Badgers coaching staff as offensive coordinator in In his 10 seasons on staff since, the Badgers posted doubledigit win totals eight times and had an overall record of (.780). Before spending the previous three seasons as the head coach at Pittsburgh, where he led the Panthers to three consecutive bowl appearances, Chryst oversaw the most explosive offenses in UW history as the Badgers offensive coordinator. During those seven seasons, Wisconsin claimed a pair of Big Ten titles while piling up a (.761) overall record. Chryst was a three-time letterwinner at UW, where he earned a degree in political science. He and his wife, Robin, have three children: Katy, JoJo and Danny. 13 THE CHRYST FILE Career Record (6th Season): (.667) Record at Wisconsin: 33-7 (3rd Season) Big Ten Record: 22-4 (3rd Season) Bowl Record: 3-1 (.750) Birthdate: Nov. 17, 1965 Hometown: Madison, Wis. Originally opened in 1917, the venerable venue celebrated its centennial in What now stands as the oldest stadium in the Big Ten, Camp Randall was originally used as a Civil War training site. This hallowed ground has seen many upgrades since officially becoming the home of the Badgers in During the Civil War, nearly 70,000 soldiers trained at Camp Randall, which also included a hospital and a prison for Confederate soldiers on its grounds. Named for Alexander Randall, the state of Wisconsin s first wartime governor, the Camp Randall land was returned to state fair property after peace was restored nationally. The fair later moved to Milwaukee, and Wisconsin s Civil War veterans urged the legislature to purchase the land. In 1893, the state presented the site to the university as a memorial athletic field. Since then, Camp Randall Stadium has grown from a small venue with wooden bleachers to one of the largest stadiums in the Big Ten with a capacity of 80,321. One of the nation s most historic college football venues, Camp Randall Stadium also happens to be one of the intimidating for opposing teams, and Wisconsin has made the most of the home-field advantage that the raucous atmosphere provides. Though it has only been a tradition at Camp Randall Stadium since 1998, Jump Around is now a defining part of UW game day. Between the third and fourth quarters, Jump Around by House of Pain is played and the 80,000-plus fans delight in doing as the tune instructs. Jump Around was crowned the winner of Sports Illustrated s Greatest College Football Traditions bracket in 2012 and was named the nation s best tradition in votes contested by SiriusXM College Sports Nation in 2014 and Since the start of the 2004 season, the Badgers have compiled a record (.894) at Camp Randall Stadium, matching Oklahoma (76-9,.894) for the second-highest winning percentage among Power Five programs. Only Ohio State (89-10,.899) has won a higher percentage of its home games. Opened in 1917, Camp Randall is the fourth-oldest stadium in the FBS. The only older on-campus facilities are: Georgia Tech (1913), Mississippi State (1914) and Cincinnati (1916). The Camp Randall grounds were used as a Civil War training site. It also held Confederate soldiers, many of whom died and were laid to rest on the west side of Madison. The area known as soldiers rest is the northernmost Confederate cemetery in the United States. Camp Randall Stadium served as a living quarters for students and military personnel during the 1940s. Dormitories were built underneath the east side stands. Approximately 150 men lived there.
