The All- Big Ten honorable mention pick recorded 3 interceptions, a forced fumble and 11 pass breakups in his first season as a starter. Junior OLB Andrew Van Ginkel will be a contributor at outside linebacker following his transfer from Iowa Western Community College. Two years ago, Van Ginkel was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Freshman of the Year after logging 18.5 TFLs and 9.0 sacks as a rookie at South Dakota. CAPTAINS ORDERS Five players have been elected by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2017 season: Senior ILB Jack Cichy, who suffered a torn ACL during practice on Aug. 8 and will miss the season. Junior OL Michael Deiter, who has made the move to left tackle after spending his first two seasons as a starter at center and guard. Senior S D Cota Dixon, an inspirational leader of the Badgers secondary who is in his second season as the starter at strong safety. Senior TE Troy Fumagalli, a preseason All-American who has developed into a weapon for the Badgers offense both as a blocker and receiver. Senior DE Conor Sheehy, a lead-byexample cornerstone of the Badgers deep and powerful defensive line. WALK ON WAY Wisconsin is known for its walk-on program, which has produced numerous team captains and even NFL players. In Paul Chryst s first season as head coach in 2015, the Badgers leading passer (QB Joel Stave), rusher (RB Dare Ogunbowale), receiver (WR Alex Erickson) and defensive player (OLB Joe Schobert) were walk-ons. A total of 19 players that started their UW careers as walk-ons since 1990 have gone on to make NFL rosters, a list that includes three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt, among others. RB Dare Ogunbowale, a free-agent signee of the Houston Texans, could add to that list this season. FAMILIAR FACES Wisconsin s football staff includes 13 former Badgers players: head coach Paul Chryst; assistant coaches Jim Leonhard, Joe Rudolph and Mickey Turner; graduate assistants Jeff Duckworth, Kevin Claxton, Al Johnson and Pat Muldoon; quality control coordinators Jon Budmayr, Antonio Fenelus and Taylor Mehlhaff; and strength and conditioning coaches Ross Kolodziej and Kyle Costigan. The Badgers are one of two programs in the FBS to have alumni holding down their head coach (Paul Chryst), offensive coordinator (Joe Rudolph) and defensive coordinator (Jim Leonhard) positions. Air Force also features alums at its three top spots in head coach Troy Calhoun, OC Mike Thiessen and DC Steve Russ. CHRYST CALLS THE SHOTS UW head coach Paul Chryst is 21-6 (.778) through his first 27 games as head coach at UW, giving him the second-best record through 27 games of any UW coach in the modern era. Bret Bielema started 22-5 (.815) across the 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons. After leading the Badgers to a 10-2 regularseason record, including a 7-2 mark in the Big Ten and the West Division title, Chryst was named Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year last season by a vote of the league s coaches. Chryst is the third UW coach to be named Big Ten Coach of the Year, joining Barry Alvarez (1993 and 1998) and Bret Bielema (2006). With records of 10-3 and 11-3 in his first two seasons at the helm of his alma mater, Chryst is just the fourth Big Ten coach to win at least 10 games in his first two seasons, joining Michigan s Fielding Yost ( ), Ohio State s Urban Meyer ( ) and Michigan s Jim Harbaugh ( ). With a win in the Cotton Bowl, Chryst became the third coach in UW history to win 11 or more games in a season. Alvarez 6 WISCONSIN FOOTBALL 2017

7 GAME 1: WISCONSIN VS. UTAH STATE SERIES HISTORY: UTAH STATE Overall: Series tied, 1-1 In Madison: Series tied, 1-1 ALL-TIME MEETINGS Year Rank Result Score Location / - L 0-20 Madison / - W Madison SERIES HISTORY Wisconsin and Utah State will meet for the third time, with all three meetings coming in Camp Randall Stadium. The Aggies scored a 20-0 victory in the teams first meeting in 1968 before the Badgers claimed a win in That 1968 win over UW is the Aggies lone victory against a Big Ten team. Utah State is 1-13 all-time against the league s current membership and hasn t faced a Big Ten team since playing the Badgers in Friday s matchup marks the teams first meeting since Utah State joined the Mountain West Conference in The Aggies were on their way to winning the final championship of the now-defunct Western Athletic Conference when they came to Madison in Since the league formed in 1999, Wisconsin is 7-2 vs. the MWC. That mark includes a loss to TCU in the 2011 Rose Bowl Game. BADGERS AGGIES CONNECTIONS When the Badgers and Aggies last met on Sept. 15, 2012, Utah State was led by head coach Gary Andersen. Just over three months later, Andersen was named head coach at Wisconsin, a position he would hold for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Chasen Andersen, who redshirted the 2014 season as a freshman while playing for his father at Wisconsin, is now a junior linebacker for the Aggies. Four members of Wisconsin s current football staff were players during the Badgers last meeting with Utah State in Graduate assistant Jeff Duckworth started at wide receiver and assistant strength and conditioning coach Kyle Costigan saw action on the offensive line. Graduate assistant Pat Muldoon (a defensive lineman) and quality control assistant Jon Budmayr (quarterback) were on the Badgers roster for the game, as well. Wisconsin junior OL Micah Kapoi and Utah State redshirt freshman OL Viliamu McMoore both attended Kapolei (Hawai i) High School. LAST MEETING MATCHUP WISCONSIN 16, UTAH STATE 14 SEPT. 15, 2012 MADISON Utah State s Josh Thompson missed a 37-yard field goal with seconds remaining, allowing Wisconsin to hold on for a victory at Camp Randall Stadium. Trailing 14-3 at halftime, the Badgers got an 82-yard punt return touchdown from Kenzel Doe to begin their comeback, and Montee Ball scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 17-yard run late in the third quarter. Ball carried 37 times for 139 yards. Utah State built its first-half lead on a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Chuckie Keeton, who was 18 of 34 for 181 yards. Wisconsin finally got a drive going late in the first quarter, but Ball was stuffed on third-and-goal from the 2 and the Badgers had to settle for a 19-yard field goal by Kyle French to cut the lead to 7-3 early in the second quarter. The Badgers switched quarterbacks at halftime, with redshirt freshman Joel Stave taking over for Danny O Brien. But it took Doe s return to make it a game again, cutting the lead to in the third quarter. After a short punt by Utah State, Wisconsin put together a drive that included Ball finding plenty of room to run on a 17-yard touchdown. 8 GAME 1: WISCONSIN VS. UTAH STATE HEAD COACH PAUL CHRYST THIRD SEASON HEAD COACH PAUL CHRYST Wisconsin football continues to thrive under Paul Chryst s leadership. In his first season as head coach at his alma mater, Chryst led Wisconsin to a 10-3 record in 2015 a run that concluded with a victory over USC in the Holiday Bowl. For an encore, he directed the Badgers to an 11-3 finish in 2016, including a win in the Cotton Bowl and Big Ten West Division championship. Chryst was named the 2016 Hayes-Schembechler Big Ten Coach of the Year and for leading the Badgers to an 11-win season against a schedule that included six matchups with top 10-ranked teams was a national finalist for both The Dodd Trophy and Paul Bear Bryan Coach of the Year awards. A former Wisconsin player and assistant coach and a Madison native, Chryst returned to his roots when he was named the Badgers 30th head coach on Dec. 17, Since then, Chryst has become one of just four coaches in Big Ten history to post double-digit win totals in each of his first two seasons as head coach, joining Michigan legend Fielding Yost and current cotemporaries Jim Harbaugh of Michigan and Urban Meyer of Ohio State. Chryst s 21-6 (.778) overall record marked the best start by a Badgers coach through two seasons, and he is the first UW mentor to win consecutive bowl games to begin a tenure as head coach. UW went 13-4 (.765) in Big Ten games over his first two seasons, with only Ohio State (15-2) posting a better mark in league play across the 2015 and 16 campaigns. Including two seasons at the helm of the program and seven years as the Badgers offensive coordinator, Chryst has overseen some of the nation s best units on both sides of the ball. Across his first two seasons as head coach, Wisconsin boasted one of the nation s truly elite defenses. The Badgers allowed just 14.7 points per game over the 2015 and 2016 seasons, a mark that ranked No. 2 nationally over that span and trailed only Alabama s mark of 14.1 points allowed per contest. Over those two years, Wisconsin also ranked No. 4 in total defense (285.6 yards per game), No. 3 in rushing defense (97.1 ypg) and No. 3 in pass efficiency defense (102.1). During Chryst s seven years as offensive coordinator from , Wisconsin averaged 34.1 points and yards of total offense per game. Both marks were the best in the Big Ten over that span and powered the Badgers to conference titles in 2010 and 2011, remarkable offensive seasons in which UW averaged 41.5 and 44.1 points per game, respectively. Wisconsin had won 10 or more games in a season just three times before Chryst joined the Badgers coaching staff as offensive coordinator in In his nine seasons on staff since, the Badgers posted double-digit win totals seven times and had an overall record of (.765). Before spending the previous three seasons as the head coach at Pittsburgh, where he led the Panthers to three consecutive bowl appearances, Chryst oversaw the most explosive offenses in UW history as the Badgers offensive coordinator. During those seven seasons, Wisconsin claimed a pair of Big Ten titles while piling up a (.761) overall record. Chryst was a three-time letterwinner at UW, where he earned a degree in political science. He and his wife, Robin, have three children: Katy, JoJo and Danny. 9 THE CHRYST FILE Career Record (6th Season): (.615) Record at Wisconsin: 21-6 (3rd Season) Big Ten Record: 13-4 (3rd Season) Bowl Record: 3-1 (.750) Birthdate: Nov. 17, 1965 Hometown: Madison, Wis. Originally opened in 1917, the venerable venue celebrates its centennial in What now stands as the oldest stadium in the Big Ten, Camp Randall was originally used as a Civil War training site. This hallowed ground has seen many upgrades since officially becoming the home of the Badgers in During the Civil War, nearly 70,000 soldiers trained at Camp Randall, which also included a hospital and a prison for Confederate soldiers on its grounds. Named for Alexander Randall, the state of Wisconsin s first wartime governor, the Camp Randall land was returned to state fair property after peace was restored nationally. The fair later moved to Milwaukee, and Wisconsin s Civil War veterans urged the legislature to purchase the land. In 1893, the state presented the site to the university as a memorial athletic field. Since then, Camp Randall Stadium has grown from a small venue with wooden bleachers to one of the largest stadiums in the Big Ten with a capacity of 80,321. One of the nation s most historic college football venues, Camp Randall Stadium also happens to be one of the intimidating for opposing teams, and Wisconsin has made the most of the home-field advantage that the raucous atmosphere provides. Though it has only been a tradition at Camp Randall Stadium since 1998, Jump Around is now a defining part of UW game day. Between the third and fourth quarters, Jump Around by House of Pain is played and the 80,000-plus fans delight in doing as the tune instructs. Jump Around was crowned the winner of Sports Illustrated s Greatest College Football Traditions bracket in 2012 and was named the nation s best tradition in votes contested by SiriusXM College Sports Nation in 2014 and Since the start of the 2004 season, the Badgers have compiled a record (.886) at Camp Randall Stadium. Among Power Five programs, only Ohio State (83-9,.902) and Oklahoma (71-8,.899) have won a higher percentage of their home games in that time frame. Opened in 1917, Camp Randall is the fourth-oldest stadium in the FBS. The only older on-campus facilities are: Georgia Tech (1913), Mississippi State (1914) and Cincinnati (1916). The Camp Randall grounds were used as a Civil War training site. It also held Confederate soldiers, many of whom died and were laid to rest on the west side of Madison. The area known as soldiers rest is the northernmost Confederate cemetery in the United States. Camp Randall Stadium served as a living quarters for students and military personnel during the 1940s. Dormitories were built underneath the east side stands. Approximately 150 men lived there. OLDEST STADIUMS Camp Randall is among the oldest facilities in the FBS: 1.
