Damon Hotz had secured, Jive, our homegrown talent, but also talent from ISK and Brookhouse and the stunning Beatbox who got everyone up from their picnic blankets dancing to end the event. There is much excitement in the air as Hillcrest continues to excel in hockey. Not only have the U15 boys reached the finals but the delayed finals for the U19 boys and girls against Peponi will now be played next week. Hillcrest was also successful in the regional hockey tournament last Saturday winning through to the final in both the girls and boys sections. The boys eventually being crowned as the overall winner. This Saturday we host the 7 a side version of the game so please come along and support our students. Today we are raising money for the drought in this part of Africa. We had a most moving assembly led by the Red Cross of Kenya that clearly laid out how fortunate we are and the need for action now. We also plan to donate the funds raised from the Cultural Day on Saturday 25 th March to the same cause. 2 MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD TEACHER continued Please do mark this significant day in your diaries. I am already very excited at the prospect of seeing hearing and tasting the cultural delights that will be served up on this day. If you missed last year please do ask others who came to let you know what an inspiring experience it is to witness the diversity we have in this school. I am in the process of interviewing for posts needed for next year. It is currently consuming much of my time along with a panel, trying to ensure the best possible teaching staff join our already strong staff team for the next academic year. Finally, next week all parents are invited to the Governor s Coffee morning which will take place on Wednesday 22 nd between 8 am and 9 am at Secondary. This is an opportunity for you to meet and chat with members of the SLT and some of our Governors. John Eveson Head Teacher MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY HEAD TEACHER Thank you to all the parents who have offered to participate in Cultural Day by taking a stall and selling food, as well as displaying arte-facts, to represent your nationality and culture. We do need more parents though, to make this day a huge success. All our proceeds are going towards "The Kenya Red Cross Drought Appeal'. Thank you to the South African, Somali, Kenyan, Chinese and European 'Mums' who have started to create a committee and are organising themselves. Hillcrest has over forty nationalities; we need to come together to celebrate this diversity as we raise money towards a very worthy cause. Please get in touch with me or front office if you would like a stall on Cultural Day on the 25 th March from pm onwards. If you are manning a stall, you should be here by 9.00 am to start setting up. Razwana Kimutai Deputy Head Teacher MIDDLE SCHOOL Congratulations to the U15 Boys and Girls Hockey teams for their excellent performances in their league matches last week. The Year 11 students are now deep into revision. I would like to encourage parents to be involved in their children's revision to ensure that it is being done properly. Some students need support in this area. All teachers have completed their syllabus and have involved students in structured revision programmes. Please ensure that students are in school so that they can benefit from this. Next term, they will be in school for the first two weeks, after which the official study leave begins on 28 th April. Jane Akelola Head of Middle School Jane.akelola@hillcrest.ac.ke ALUMNI NEWS Zain Verjee Class of 1992 Founder of Akoma and former CNN news Anchor, shared her favourite quote from Wangari Maathai s words to live by on International Women s Day In the course of history, there comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness, to reach a higher moral ground. A time when we have to shed our fear and give hope to each other. That time is now. Those of us who have been privileged to receive education, skills, and experiences and even power must be role models for the next generation of leadership. If we absorb the message of what Wangari Maathai had to say, then we will live in a much better world. Jackie Guest Alumni Coordinator Hillcrestians@hillcrest.ac.ke 2

4 SIXTH FORM Attendance Policy Continual lateness and/or absence will have a markedly bad effect on your studies, so you are strongly advised to avoid it. The school year has approximately 15 weeks of holiday time programmed in to it, when you can take your vacations. Make the most of the term time for continuing your learning. When you are absent or are aware you will have to miss school then a letter of explanation must be brought in signed by your parent or legal guardian. It is your responsibility to catch up with any work missed. Unauthorised lateness and absences are recorded and may have to be written in references. This does not look good to prospective universities or employers who are filling oversubscribed courses! For the Year 13 students please note that lessons are ongoing and you are missing the final blessings from your teachers in terms of exam techniques and preparation. Any day missed is recorded in your file and still falls under the attendance policy which could jeopardise your chances later at university or for any reference required from the school. Swimming Gala The weather looks great for this event next Thursday and I am counting on the seniors to show leadership to the entire school. For the Year 13s, it is the last swimming gala of your high school life - let s go for it. May the best House win! Examinations All students in Years 12 and 13 taking the examinations in May/June have been given their CIE statement of entry by the Examinations Office. This document shows when a student is to sit for a paper (AM/PM) and must be carried to the examination room. It has to be kept safely until the results are published. Please ask your son or daughter for a copy, so that you know when they are scheduled to take an examination. Have a good weekend. Maurice Otieno Head of Sixth Form Maurice.otieno@hillcrest.ac.ke 4
5 INSPIRATION FROM THE HEXAGON GRAMMAR MATTERS Exam fever is running high across school. You're balancing equations, cooking up a feast, painting fantastic works of art and writing essays. 7 GIRLS SPORTS The 2017 Hockey season has come to a befitting end as Hillcrest has not disappointed, but has shown its sporting prowess. As the season comes to a close I salute all the players who sacrificed their time to train and represent Hillcrest during league matches. Indeed they carried the flag high and with every result, they carried their pride on their sleeves like a medal of honour. The U14 Girls gave a good account of themselves sending a warning of their intent for the 2018 season. They played six league matches; won 3, drew 1 and lost 2. In their maiden year in Secondary school the team has shown a lot of promise and brought with them the kind of talent, passion and enthusiasm that is associated with sports at Hillcrest. They were grouped with U15 teams so their achievement is worthy of all accolades. They were semi-finalists in the Peponi School U14 Girls Hockey tournament. I must commend the captains; Sara Bottura, Anesu Mlambo and Chelsea Matu for leading the team with passion and by example. They had a retinue of talented strikers in Joan Njuguna, Nina Redinger, Anna Nora, who were lethal forwards taking every chance in the D area to convert the shots into goals. In midfield Chelsea Matu, Sara Bottura, Dorris Nsanzimana and Florence Bierens were a formidable team with Chelsea and Sara doing most of the spade work with their excellent stick skills. At the back, Anesu Mlambo was indefatigable; Rosa Kimweli, Mumbi Maina, Ashley Karanja and Chiara Roux ensured that they supported her as fellow defenders. The goalkeepers, Sia Were and Rachael Hurn, both showed good understanding of tactical aspects of the game and were instrumental in ensuring that the goal tally was kept low. Well done to the team for their effort. The U15 Girls have come a long way and improved immensely during the season, showing that they were not a push over side. They played six matches; won 4; lost 1 and drew 1. This put them in the top 4 out of 12 teams. In the semi-final they were pitted against Peponi School at Peponi. The match was evenly matched and at the end of 60 minutes we were nil all. Unfortunately we lost 2-1in the penalty shoot- out. It was a hard fought match and sadly we had to bow out of the championships, however our passion for Hockey was slammed on our foreheads. The team represented Hillcrest in the most honourable manner, ably led by the captains Miracle Denga, Michelle Harderwijk and Lillian Sorensen. I tip my hat to these amazing balls of energy and tell them that they started strong and finished stronger. Our success is from the whole team; Yvonne Kimani and Nicole Kranck (Goalkeepers); Sara Janmohamed, Lucrezia Belpietro, Fartun Hosh, Mariam Kimutai, Lillian Sorensen (Defenders); Michelle Harderwijk, Kayla Hotz, Elsa Marrian (Midfielders); and Luca Humphreys, Miracle Denga, Safiya Hannan-Parker, Domenique Terblans, Wacera Macharia, Noa Oz, Shefali Kachra and Shivangi Krishna (Forwards). You Rock Girls! The U17 Girls became infamous for their ability to rock up for a match without attending any training sessions and still pull a good win. In the preliminary stages, they played five matches and won all of them by comfortable margins. In the finals against Rusinga School whom they had earlier beaten 2-1, it was not going to be easy as Rusinga came back with an arsenal in their holsters. We were in charge of the game in the 60 minutes played, but luck was not on our side and with an early goal, Rusinga were able to keep us at bay. There was such concerted and laudable effort from the captains Anushka Madan-Handa, Noa Ohana and Ivy Gitonga (who played so well despite an injury she picked up the previous Saturday in a Football match). They were an indefatigable trio and held their own against Rusinga School. Suraya Charters, Joanna Dyer, Megan Taljaard, Acacia Mathews, Vie Bierens, Kaitlyn Harris and Amani Gardner were there to ensure that none of the opponents passed through our defence or had contact with our hardworking goalkeeper Lyanca Ellis. We were just unfortunate to concede the solitary goal that sealed our fate, their second of the season - Such an achievement is no mean feat. Ivy Gitonga and Noa Ohana worked tirelessly in the midfield -they were exceptional and on point; always at the right place at the right time. The forward line of Diana Vargas, Nicole Terblans (who was also the team s top scorer with 8 goals) and our never tiring Anushka Madan- Handa who always acts like a centre forward linking the forward line and the midfield; they were just unfortunate not to score on the day. I wish them well in their forthcoming IGCSEs and in their future endeavours. I know they will always be Hillcrestians wherever their sojourn takes them. They leave a part of themselves at Hillcrest, as they take a part of Hillcrest with them for their A Level study. Well done girls and kudos to all of you. The U19 Girls sailed through to the finals of the season by beating ISK 1-0. Unfortunately the final match has not been played. The result of the deliberations will be relayed as soon as possible. The teams are in high gear preparations for the Annual Joab Omach Memorial Hockey Tournaments for U19 Boys and Girls tomorrow at Hillcrest School. Please come and cheer our Year 13 boys and girls as they play for their teams for the last time - help them to give a good account of their illustrious hockey career at Hillcrest School. Dorcie Agundah-Oyaro Head of Girls Games Dorcie.agundah@hillcrest.ac.ke 7
8 BOYS SPORTS The U15 Boys Hockey team emerged as the KAIISSO league runners-up for the second time in two years. The boys put up a good fight against rivals Peponi School but were unlucky to lose 0-2. I would like to mention that the team did their very best and that this is one of the most amazing teams that I have worked with at Hillcrest. The U19 Boys Hockey final match has now been rescheduled to be played on Wednesday next week at Hillcrest starting at 11:00 am. Last Weekend, the Hillcrest Boys Hockey team finished winners of the Nairobi North regional games. The team has had such a good campaign. On Saturday, we beat Moi Forces School 3-0 before smashing Dagoretti boys 7-0. On Sunday, we played in the semi-final match against Upper Hill School and we emerged on top after the match drew 1-1 in normal time and beating them 3-1 on penalty shoot outs which were scored by Gisa, William and Ledama. The team then met traditional rivals Lenana School in the final. Even though our opponents dominated the match possession in the first half, we were able to up our game and ended up winning 1-0 in full time with Ryan Anthony scoring the winning goal with only 10 minutes remaining. I would like to thank all the students who have remained committed to playing in these matches and the parents who have always cheered us along. The next round of competition will be the Nairobi Regional games which will be hosted at Nairobi School on Friday 24 th, Saturday 25 th and Sunday 26 th March. The winning school in this round will proceed to the National games which will be held in April. Joseph Otieno Head of Boys Sports Joseph.otieno@hillcrest.ac.ke 8
