Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings June 12, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1981-Major league baseball players begin a strike that will last 50 days, wiping out nearly two months of the season, and reducing the Reds schedule to 108 games MLB.COM Who will Reds take with No. 2 pick in Draft? By Mark Sheldon / 12:01 AM ET + 10 COMMENTS CINCINNATI -- The 2017 Draft will take place through Wednesday, beginning with the Draft preview show on MLB Network and MLB.com at 6 p.m. ET today. MLB Network will broadcast the first 36 picks (Round 1 and Competitive Balance Round A), while MLB.com will stream all 75 picks on Day 1. MLB.com will also provide live pick-by-pick coverage of Rounds 3-10 on Day 2, starting at 1 p.m. Then, Rounds can be heard live on MLB.com on Wednesday, beginning at noon. Go to MLB.com/draft to see the Top 200 Prospects list, projected top picks from MLBPipeline.com analysts Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo, the complete order of selection and more. And on Twitter to see what Draft hopefuls, clubs and experts are saying. Here's how the Draft is shaping up for the Reds, whose first selection is the No. 2 overall pick. In about 50 words For the second year in a row, the Reds have the second overall pick. The club is trying to put a rebuilding era in the rearview and prepare to contend. Several top prospects from the system have made their way to the bigs, and the next wave is needed to supplement the depth and keep growth trending upward. The scoop This will be vice president of amateur scouting Chris Buckley's 12th year of helming the Draft for the Reds. However, this will be the first year that Dick Williams will be overseeing the decisions as the president of baseball operations. It's not likely that there will be a major shift in philosophy as Buckley and the Reds have always taken the approach of selecting the best available athletes on their board -- regardless of the depth issues or need at a particular position. First-round buzz There is plenty of intrigue, of course, because of the high pick the Reds have, but they're somewhat at the mercy of the Twins, who hold the No. 1 overall pick. Recent mock drafts by MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo and Jim Callis have Cincinnati taking right-handed pitcher Hunter Greene -- a high school kid from Sherman Oaks, Calif. Another interesting option would be left-handed pitcher Brendan McKay, a two-way player nearby at the University of Louisville. McKay is an accomplished hitter and first baseman, but the Reds would likely want the left-hander to pitch. Money matters Under MLB's Collective Bargaining Agreement, each team has an allotted bonus pool equal to the sum of the values of that club's selections in the first 10 rounds of the Draft. The more picks a team has, and the earlier it picks, the larger the pool. The signing bonuses for a team's selections in the first 10 rounds, plus any bonus greater than $125,000 for a player taken after the 10th round, will apply toward the bonus-pool total. Any team going up to 5 percent over its allotted pool will be taxed at a 75-percent rate on the overage. A team that overspends by 5-10 percent gets a 75-percent tax plus the loss of a first-round pick. A team that goes percent over its pool amount will be hit with a 100-percent penalty on the overage and the loss of a first- and second-round pick. Any overage of 15 percent or more gets a 100-percent tax, plus the loss of first-round picks in the next two Drafts. Because the Reds have both the Nos. 2 and 32 (Competitive Balance Round A) overall picks, they will have a bonus pool of $13,658,400 to sign their top 11 selections.

For the No. 2 pick in this year's Draft, the slot value is $7,193,200, which was reduced from $7,762,900. The No. 32 pick is valued at $2,084,400. As part of the new CBA, the bonus value for each of the top two picks was reduced to bring them more in line with the rest of the first round. Shopping list Inside the organization, there is a view that the system is fairly well balanced heading into the Draft. However, the desire to add starting-pitching depth is always a constant, and the Reds would also like to select more impact bats for the offense. Trend watch In recent years, the Reds have leaned toward selecting college players. The signing bonus demands are often less than that of high school prospects who have college as an alternative to turning professional. Also, there is often less development time needed for a collegiate player -- especially those taken in the upper rounds. That means prospects can get through the system quicker to potentially contribute sooner at the Major League level. Recent Draft history Rising fast Right-handed pitcher Tyler Mahle, 22, has had a dominant season for Double-A Pensacola and could be a candidate for the big league pitching staff before the season is done. Mahle, the Reds' No. 9-ranked prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, has already thrown a perfect game this season for Pensacola on April 22 and tossed a no-hitter last season for Class A Advanced Daytona. Cinderella story Second baseman Shed Long, who was taken in the 12th round of the 2013 Draft, is 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds, but he has played big in Long, 21, was recently named the Florida State League's Player of the Month for May after he batted.339 with five home runs and 14 RBIs in 27 games. Long is the No. 13-ranked prospect in the organization, according to MLBPipeline.com. In The Show As a small-market club that often shuns big expenditures in the free-agent market, the Reds have spent the last decade-plus cultivating talent through the Draft. Several homegrown picks fill the current 25-man roster, including Joey Votto, Zack Cozart, Billy Hamilton, Michael Lorenzen, Devin Mesoraco and Tucker Barnhart. More recent examples that have reached the Majors this season are Amir Garrett, Robert Stephenson, Jesse Winker and Cody Reed. Recent top picks 2016: Nick Senzel, 3B, Class A Advanced Daytona 2015: Tyler Stephenson, C, Class A Dayton 2014: Nick Howard, RHP, injured 2013: Phillip Ervin, OF, Triple-A Louisville 2012: Nick Travieso, RHP, injured Mark Sheldon has covered the Reds for MLB.com since 2006, and previously covered the Twins from Follow him on and Facebook and listen to his podcast. Arroyo, Reds open series vs. Padres By Austin Laymance / MLB.com June 11th, COMMENTS The Reds continue their six-game road trip on Monday when they visit the Padres for the opener of a three-game series at Petco Park. Bronson Arroyo will start for the Reds, while the Padres give the ball to Luis Perdomo. Arroyo, 40, is looking for his first winning decision since May 2 against the Giants. The Reds have won his last two starts, though. Arroyo has struggled on the road this season, going 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in five starts.

Perdomo is working to hone his ability to attack both sides of the plate, but he has struggled with command of his glove-side pitches (in against lefties, away to righties). Perdomo allowed five runs in four innings in his last start against the D-backs on Wednesday, after which Padres manager Andy Green said the right-hander needed to follow the game plan. "Clearly we need to be stronger with our message because it did not get across how we want him to attack in a Major League Baseball game," Green said. "If he's going to be successful -- which we think he is -- he cannot pitch the way he did. Chalk it up to a learning experience, but he's been in the league for a year and a couple months now, so it's time to start learning those things." Monday's game will be the first meeting between the Reds and Padres this season. Things to know about this game Arroyo last pitched in San Diego in 2014, when he fired seven shutout innings to beat the Padres as a member of the D-backs. Perdomo faced the Reds as a rookie last season, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits in a loss on the road. He struck out five and walked three. At age 40, Arroyo isn't going to blow anyone away with a fastball that tops out at 87 mph and more routinely sits at mph. But Arroyo's offspeed pitches don't seem to be fooling hitters either. The lanky right-hander has allowed 10 barreled balls on pitches of 80 mph or lower, the second-highest total in baseball entering Sunday behind another soft-tosser, Jered Weaver. Trio of Reds sluggers chasing MLB history By Austin Laymance / MLB.com June 11th, COMMENT LOS ANGELES -- The Reds are on pace to accomplish something only four Major League teams have done in history: Feature three players with at least 39 homers in a single season. Joey Votto, Scott Schebler and Adam Duvall all homered in Sunday's 9-7 loss to the Dodgers. Votto and Schebler are tied atop the National League with 18 homers apiece, putting them on pace to hit 47. Duvall hit his 15th homer, putting him on pace to finish the season with 39. All told, the trio of Votto, Schebler and Duvall are on pace to combine for 133 homers. That would be a Reds' franchise record for three players in a single season. The 1970 Reds got 119 homers combined from Johnny Bench (45), Tony Perez (40) and Lee May (34). "It means you're never out of a game, and that's what we've felt this year," Reds manager Bryan Price said of the club's potent offense. "That's the beauty of our lineup, you never really feel like we're too far out of the ballgame." Duvall opened the home run barrage with a solo shot to left field on the first pitch he saw from Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. Two batters later, Schebler slapped a 1-0 offering from Ryu for an opposite-field homer. Votto added a solo shot to left-center in the third, also off Ryu. "I think that we have an offense that can score on anybody, and that isn't afraid to come back," said catcher Devin Mesoraco, who went deep off Ross Stripling in the sixth for a two-run homer. "The at-bats that we've been putting together, specifically the middle of the order there, they've been impressive. That can't be an easy lineup for any pitcher or opposing team to get through." While the Reds smacked four homers Sunday afternoon, the Dodgers matched their output and overcame a 7-3 deficit with six runs in the eighth, taking the lead on Corey Seager's grand slam off closer Raisel Iglesias. "Tough to waste a seven-run effort by the offense, but it's really what we do as far as scoring runs," Price said. "That really has been a big part, the power portion. We got some great at-bats and some big add-on runs there to stretch the lead to four going into the eighth and we just couldn't shut it down." The other Major League clubs with three hitters with at least 39 homers in a single season include the 2015 Toronto Blue Jays (Jose Bautista, Josh Donaldson, Edwin Encarnacion), the 1997 Colorado Rockies (Vinny Castilla, Andres Galarraga, Larry Walker), the '96 Rockies (Ellis Burks, Castilla, Galarraga) and the '73 Atlanta Braves (Hank Aaron, Darrell Evans, Davey Johnson).

Reds unable to hold late lead vs. Dodgers By Joshua Thornton / MLB.com June 11th, COMMENTS LOS ANGELES -- Using an eighth-inning rally capped off by Corey Seager's first career grand slam, the Dodgers worked a comefrom-behind victory and series sweep of the Reds in a 9-7 decision on Sunday afternoon. "That inning right there, that ability to win pitches, you can go down the list of at-bats, the exclamation mark with Corey hitting the homer was just typical," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. Leading 7-3 heading into the eighth, the Reds brought in closer Raisel Iglesias to try and keep their lead. However, Iglesias walked three straight Dodgers batters, aided by a 13-pitch at-bat by Enrique Hernandez to set up Seager's grand slam. "Today was a tough day for me," said Iglesias, who entered the game with a scoreless streak of 20 consecutive innings. "I didn't have the feel for my pitches today. I made a mistake." Kenley Jansen closed out the ninth for the Dodgers, earning his 200th career save and stretching his record of consecutive strikeouts without a walk to 43. "He's one of the leaders on the ball club," Roberts said. "You take a look at his young career and 200 saves, he's a championship type player. For us, to help us win baseball games, he's a large part of it." The Reds were in a groove at the plate, hitting four home runs in the game. Scott Schebler and Devin Mesoraco hit two-run home runs, and Joey Votto and Adam Duvall hit solo shots. "Tough to waste a seven-run effort by the offense, but it's really what we do as far as scoring runs," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "That really has been a big part, the power portion. We got some great at-bats and some big add-on runs there to stretch the lead to four going into the eighth and we just couldn't shut it down." Cody Bellinger hit a pair of home runs for the Dodgers, a two-run shot to right-center in the second, and a solo homer in the eighth. Chase Utley added a solo shot of his own in the fifth inning. Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu was chased after four innings, giving up six hits and four runs. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Giving them a spark: Before Seager's grand slam, Bellinger helped the Dodgers cut into the Reds' lead. The rookie smacked his second home run of the game to 7-4, marking his third multi-home run game of the season. Staying the course: After Iglesias walked Yasiel Puig in the eighth with one-out, Hernandez headed to the plate looking to spark the Dodgers' rally. Hernandez, who came in the game for Adrian Gonzalez, worked a 13-pitch at-bat, that would help set up a grand slam after Utley was walked. "You have to give him a lot of credit," Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco said of Hernandez. "He put together a really good at-bat against a really tough pitcher. You've got to keep throwing strikes, and we tried there for a while and he kept fouling them off. I would give a lot of the credit to him." QUOTABLE "I think it's something where there's a process, there's a fight in that clubhouse. When you look at a season, a winning season, a championship season, these are games that are a reason why we're going to be right there in the end." -- Roberts, on his team's ability to come from behind in games "Outside of the skill set and the confidence is the ability to control the pulse and the heartbeat. He's a guy that hits good pitches and performs in big spots and he did it again today." -- Roberts, on his Seager's ability to come up clutch SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS Votto, Schebler and Duvall are on pace to combine for 133 homers, which would set a Reds' franchise record for a trio in a single season.

SUAREZ FLASHES LEATHER Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez continued to show off his improved defense, making a barehanded play on a chopper from Hernandez for the final out of the sixth inning. "It's the norm now," Price said. "Instead of it being something that stands out because it wasn't happening as frequently as you'd like to last year as he was learning the position, now it's the norm. You want to make sure that you don't take for granted that the plays that he makes are sensational. I think we all make a point to go over there and give him a pat on the back every time he comes in after an outstanding play, because he makes it look easy." WHAT'S NEXT Reds: Bronson Arroyo takes the mound when the Reds open a three-game series in San Diego on Monday. Arroyo is seeking his first winning decision since May 2 against the Giants. The Reds have won his last two starts. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 p.m. ET. Dodgers: The Dodgers have Monday off and travel to Cleveland for their first interleague series of the season. Ace Clayton Kershaw will get the ball in the series opener and is coming off a win against the Nationals in his last outing. Kershaw is 8-2 on the year, with a 2.20 ERA. Trent Rosecrans, crosecrans@enquirer.com Published 5:52 a.m. ET June 12, 2017 Updated 1 hour ago For the second year in a row, the Reds own the No. 2 pick in Monday s Major League Baseball Draft. In 2016, the Reds had a plethora of choices before selecting Tennessee third baseman Nick Senzel with the second pick. This year the Reds are down to three players for the second pick Louisville first baseman and left-handed pitcher Brendan McKay, Vanderbilt right-hander Kyle Wright and California prep right-hander and shortstop Hunter Greene. The Enquirer talked to Dan O Dowd about the draft. O Dowd is the former Rockies general manager and will be one of MLB Network s analysts for the broadcast of Monday s first round and competitive balance picks. The broadcast starts with an hour-long preview at 6 p.m. on MLB Network and the draft begins at 7 p.m. Here is what O Dowd had to say about each of the top three candidates for the Reds with the second pick: Hunter Greene Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) High School Shortstop/Right-handed pitcher 6-foot-4, 200 pounds Hunter Greene is one of those physical freaks that looks like Dwight Gooden when he s pitching and A-Rod when he s playing a position. You re not going to have many of these conversations when you re talking about these kids. When I first saw him, I thought this kid s going to be a pitcher, but the more you watch his video defensively, he centers the ball well, his glove s out in front of him. His hand-transfer is consistent. He can throw from different angles. He moves really well like Rodriguez did. On video, there s some swing-and-miss to his game offensively. There s more power than hit-ability right now, that would be my only concern. That may be the fact he hasn t had enough reps hitting. Pitching-wise, it s a pretty complete package. It s great rhythm on the mound, the internal clock of understanding where to separate and finish. He does this as if he s already been in pro ball a couple of years or a college junior. His maturity as a pitcher is pretty far along. (On the Gooden comp): Hunter Greene looks like Dwight Gooden on the mound he s got the same delivery, same internal rhythm, same spin on his breaking ball. Very, very loose with the arm. Very similar guy, to me, anyway. I didn t put another comp on Greene, because I couldn t think of another guy at this age, as a high school kid, that when I looked at him, that s the name that came immediately to mind, because I m old enough to have seen Dwight when he was young. So, Dwight

was one of the best high school pitchers to ever come out. This kid, at this stage, his ability and maturity-wise and what he s been exposed to is much further along, from a mental capacity. Brendan McKay University of Louisville First baseman/left-handed pitcher 6-foot-2, 220 pounds O Dowd: It s easier to profile as a pitcher and DH similar to the (Shohei) Otani kid coming over from Japan. It s a first baseman with plus power and more walks than strikeouts this year. And he s a left-handed pitcher that reminds me of a Mark Mulder-type guy. He s a little cruder, I think, from a pitching development standpoint. I don t think it s anything that can t be cleaned up relatively quickly because he s got such a good arm and such a good secondary pitch. I ve struggled with (a hitting comp) a little bit, I ve gone from John Olerud to a little bit of Todd Helton. It s a left-handed bat that has a feel for hitting, but he s got plus power. They talk about launch angle, he s got really good launch angle. Kyle Wright Vanderbilt University Right-handed pitcher 6-foot-4, 220 pounds O Dowd: I got a chance to see him a lot because my daughter graduated from Vanderbilt. He s really evolved for me a lot this year as a pitcher. I think he s the best college arm that there is. I m not big on putting guys close to the big leagues. At the beginning of the year, he was a four-seam fastball, slider guy. He got hit a little bit, he was very predictable in his counts, leaving balls over the middle of the plate. Mentally the game moved quickly on him early in the year. As the year went on, he made incredible adjustments. He started throwing his two-seamer more, pitch-to-contact, pitch-tosituation, got ground balls when needed. He introduced his breaking ball on a regular basis where I think it s on its way to being a plus pitch and well above average. He started using his changeup in fastball counts. You really saw that against Clemson in his start in the regionals. That shows you this kid s got intelligence, aptitude and process thoughts extremely well, problem solves on the mound. He s an athlete, he s got an Aaron Sanchez body type, but much stronger. He deadlifts 700 pounds in the weight room. He s got a power approach, like Gerrit Cole, but with a better feel at the same age. Two-way players headline MLB draft C. Trent Rosecrans, crosecrans@enquirer.com Published 5:51 a.m. ET June 12, 2017 Updated 1 hour ago Almost as interesting as the name that the Reds will call Monday night with the second overall pick the Major League Baseball draft will be the position that goes along with it. According to multiple sources, the Reds are down to three names for the second pick in the draft, and two of those are legitimate candidates to play either in the field or on the mound, Louisville left-hander/first baseman Brendan McKay and California prep shortstop/right-hander Hunter Greene. There is no such question for the third of the Reds selected trio, Vanderbilt right-hander Kyle Wright. But with McKay and Greene, the question of where they will play is still up in the air. According to sources, the Reds prefer both on the mound, but that could change depending on what happens once they get their hands on the player. With those two, the Reds have had to do twice the work scouting as they d normally do, said Chris Buckley, the team s vice president for amateur scouting. You have to determine which way your group like better, Buckley said. You watch Kyle Wright, nobody says we like him as a hitter. You have to realize when he s doing two things, he s taking away from the other things. Brendan McKay pitches every Friday and bats fourth. Then on Saturday and Sunday, he plays first and that s taxing. You have to weigh that in with a guy that s just a hitter or pitcher. Louisville s Brendan McKay an accomplished two-way college star According to many reports, teams are split on McKay. Some teams would like him to be a pitcher, others a hitter. Some, especially American League teams, may let him do both.

Greene, who was on the cover of Sports Illustrated this year, has hit 102 mph on the radar gun, so there are few, if any, teams that see his future anywhere but the mound. In April, Greene stopped pitching for his California high school team in an attempt to avoid injury before the draft. Greene has publicly expressed interest in playing both spots as a pro. Current Reds reliever Michael Lorenzen has said similar things even as a big-leaguer. Entering his junior year, Lorenzen didn t want to pitch because he was afraid he d be drafted as a pitcher. Alas, his Cal State-Fullerton team needed him, so he served as the team s center fielder and closer. That s why Lorenzen had mixed emotions on draft day in Although he was a first-round pick of the Reds, 38th overall, Lorenzen was disappointed when he heard the position pitcher called along with his name that night. It is tough that everyone else is in control of what you re going to do, Lorenzen said. I think it s really the first time that you experience it at this level is what do we get paid for? We re an employee and we listen. It s my style to listen and say, yes sir and do what I m told to do. It s tough for sure. A closer for the Titans, Lorenzen pitched out of the bullpen his first year in pro ball, advancing from low-a Dayton to high-a Bakersfield and all the way to Double-A Pensacola in his first minor-league season. He was sent to the Arizona Fall League that same year and said afterward the Reds sat down with him to discuss his future. It took until we sat down with the front office and I told them I wanted to play a position, but I said I ll trust whatever you tell me to do, I ll do, Lorenzen recalled. They decided I d just pitch, and so I said, OK and decided to give it everything I ve got. At that point, he decided he d dedicate himself to being a pitcher. He was in the big leagues by Lorenzen fits a type the Reds like, Buckley said, athletic pitchers who are more than just pitchers. With pitching I like to start with the athlete, whenever possible, Buckley said. Most times the pitchers we draft are very athletic. Good athletes repeat their delivery better. I look at Zack Grienke, I scouted him playing shortstop. Buckley also noted that Mike Leake played in the field for Arizona State, while Raisel Iglesias and Aroldis Chapman were also position players in Cuba who became pitchers. The Reds have also liked multi-sport athletes for many of the same reasons. Amir Garrett, of course, played basketball at St. John s. Devin Mesoraco was a good football player, Todd Frazier an accomplished prep basketball player. You love to have that complete baseball player, Buckley said. If you ask Bryan Price, he likes when his starting pitchers can give him three competitive at-bats. We always try to get as many of those guys as we can. No matter who the Minnesota Twins take with the top pick, and most mock drafts and early reports have them leaning toward Wright, the Reds will have a chance to take one of those complete players at No. 2. Dodgers storm back against Raisel Iglesias to sweep Reds Zach Buchanan, zbuchanan@enquirer.com Published 8:49 p.m. ET June 11, 2017 Updated 11 hours ago LOS ANGELES For the second game in a row, Corey Seager killed the Cincinnati Reds. Saturday night, he d tallied his first-ever walk-off hit to clinch the game for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Less than 24 hours later, he clubbed an eighth-inning grand slam to send the deflated Reds to a 9-7 loss and a series sweep at Dodger Stadium. But though Seager ultimately drove a dagger all the way into their hearts, it was really Kiké Hernandez who mortally wounded the Reds. It was Hernandez that drew a 13-pitch walk in the eighth, sucking a bit of life out of Cincinnati closer Raisel Iglesias with each foul ball. The battle of wills ended with Hernandez on first and the bases loaded, and the Reds up 7-4. Within seven pitches a Chase Utley walk and Seager s first-pitch blast the Dodgers had claimed a two-run lead. Facing all-world Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen in the top of the ninth, the Reds went down in order. Those are the tough ones, man, Reds manager Bryan Price said. You re going to have a few of those, hopefully only a couple a year where those leads get away late. But they happen every year, and they don t feel any better year-to-year.

The Reds entered the eighth leading 7-3, an advantage built on the back of four home runs from Cincinnati s deep, never-say-never lineup. Price turned to rookie Austin Brice to protect it in the eighth, but Brice teed up a solo homer for fellow rookie Cody Bellinger to trim the lead with one out. Yasmani Grandal singled immediately after, and Price called for his closer. Few pitchers in baseball had been enjoying as strong a run as Iglesias entering the game. The 27-year-old right-hander began the day with a 0.57 ERA and hadn t allowed a run since April 23. In that span, he had held batters to a.134 average. Still, it quickly became apparent that Iglesias wasn t himself. He walked Yasiel Puig on four pitches, bringing up Hernandez. Iglesias first pitch to the Dodger infielder dotted the low-and-inside corner but was called a ball. He rebounded with a fastball for a low called strike. The right-handed hitting Hernandez fouled away the next pitch, and also the following six. Despite a put-away count at 1-2, many of those pitches filled up the strike zone. A couple sliders dove outside, but not my much. I think there were a lot of close pitches that were on the corner but not off the corner, Iglesias said, via interpreter Julio Morillo. It was more a strike. It wasn t like a chase pitch. Hernandez then laid off a slider below the zone and another one yanked into the opposite batter s box to bring the count full. After another foul ball, catcher Devin Mesoraco and the rest of the infield converged on the mound to change signs and give Iglesias a breather. The next pitch just missed low, loading the bases. Chase Utley laid off four obvious balls to force in a run, and Seager hammered a first-pitch change-up, hanging at his sternum, for a grand slam that sent the assembled 42,674 fans into a frenzy. Iglesias rebounded to escape the inning without further damage, although anything more would have been insult rather than injury. Despite the meltdown, his ERA rose to only He s confident he ll be able to put the outing behind him. Price echoed the sentiment. This game, you play it every day, Price said. If you beat yourself up every single day, even if you have a decent year, half the time you re going to go home and beat yourself up. It shortens the lifespan. Reds recap: Cincinnati falls victim to comeback by Dodgers Zach Buchanan, zbuchanan@enquirer.com Published 7:19 p.m. ET June 11, 2017 Updated 12 hours ago LOS ANGELES - The Reds slugged their way to an early lead, but the Dodgers stormed back, handing the Reds a 9-7 loss on Sunday at Dodger Stadium. Here are the main storylines. Raisel Iglesias had a meltdown. The Reds entered the eighth with a healthy 7-3 advantage, but the Dodgers quickly narrowed it when Cody Bellinger smacked a solo homer off rookie right-hander Austin Brice. It was Bellinger s second of the game. After Brice gave up a single to his next hitter, Reds manager Bryan Price pulled him for closer Raisel Iglesias. Iglesias simply didn t have it. He walked his first batter on four pitches, and then found himself locked in a death match with Kike Hernandez, who fouled off seven straight pitches at one point. After the 12th pitch of the at-bat, the Reds infield convened around Iglesias for a chat. The 13th pitch was ball four, loading the bases. Chase Utley worked another walk to tighten the Reds cushion to just two runs, and pitching coach Mack Jenkins made a visit to the mound. The next batter was shortstop Corey Seager, the walk-off hero from the night before. Seager clobbered his first pitch from Iglesias, a hanging change-up, for a grand slam to give the Dodgers a 9-7 lead. Iglesias regained his control in time to strike out Justin Turner and Adrian Gonzalez to staunch the bleeding, but the Reds went down in order against Los Angeles closer Kenley Jansen in the ninth. The Reds are on pace to make some homer history. The Reds have had several players sitting high up on the major-league home run leaderboard, and several of them took a step higher Sunday. Adam Duvall started things off in the second by clubbing the first pitch he saw in the game to left for his 15th of the year. Scott Schebler followed two batters later with a two-run shot to the opposite field, giving him 18 and sole possession of the National League lead. A teammate joined him an inning later, when Joey Votto produced an opposite-field home run of his own to give the Reds a 4-2 lead. Catcher Devin Mesoraco closed things out with a two-run homer in the sixth No. 5 on the year for him that made it 7-3.

Votto and Schebler are now on pace for 47 home runs, and Duvall is on pace for 39. Only four teams in baseball history have produced three players with at least 39 home runs. The Reds have never done it. The franchise records for homers from a trio of players is 119, and those three are on pace to hit 133. Tim Adleman made due with stuff that wasn t his best. Adleman gave up three runs two earned in five innings, which might be a minor miracle as much as he fought his command throughout the game. At one point, Adleman had thrown 61 pitches and only 33 of them were strikes. Bellinger hurt him for a two-run homer in the second, and in the fifth Utley clubbed a solo shot to center that Billy Hamilton just missed on a leap at the fence. But Adleman also stranded runners in scoring position in the first and third innings, and left another runner on in the fourth. He had just a two-run margin most of the time, and didn t relinquish it. He walked two and struck out four, and was removed at just 75 pitches for left-hander Wandy Peralta to start the sixth. Eugenio Suarez had a pair of web gems. Neither play came in a particularly tense situation, but the Reds third baseman certainly saved a couple hits with his quick glove work and accurate arm. In the fifth, he dove past the foul line to stop a speeding grounder from Chris Taylor, rising to his feet and firing to first just in time to record the final out. He closed out the next inning in impressive fashion as well, charging a slow grounder from Hernandez, barehanding it and throwing to first to beat Hernandez by a fraction of a second. Adam Duvall, Billy Hamilton return to Reds lineup Zach Buchanan, zbuchanan@enquirer.com 3:27 p.m. ET June 11, 2017 LOS ANGELES The Cincinnati Reds have already been playing with a short bench in recent weeks, and Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers it was essentially down to two players. Left fielder Adam Duvall was out sick for the second straight day, and center fielder Billy Hamilton was banged up and in need of a day off. Both felt much better Sunday, and Reds manager Bryan Price inserted each back into the lineup. Hopefully both these guys are much closer to full-speed today than they would have been yesterday, Price said. Duvall s illness has been the more persistent issue for the Reds. The 28-year-old first experienced symptoms of what he called an intestinal virus last Monday, and things worsened throughout the week. He had trouble sleeping, keeping food down and staying hydrated. But Sunday morning he was able to eat breakfast and came to the park rejuvenated. He s not at 100 percent just yet, but is feeling the best he has all week. I was able to eat something this morning and I ve got some energy back, Duvall said. I m not nauseous. Hopefully I continue getting better. Despite being under the weather, Duvall was needed to pinch-hit Saturday night in the ninth. Leading up to that moment, he was able to take some swings in the batting cage and informed Price that he could handle a plate appearance. He was greeted by perhaps the game s most dangerous closer in Dodgers right-hander Kenley Jansen, who entered the game with 41 strikeouts and no walks on the season. Duvall made solid contact on a 1-2 cutter on the high outside corner, but flied out to left for the final out of the inning. I feel like I just missed that pitch, Duvall said. Obviously, he s a tough pitcher. He s got good stuff. I felt like I saw the ball pretty good and made a good move on it. ASSOCIATED PRESS Seager, Dodgers rally for 9-7 win against Reds Today LOS ANGELES (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers got back in the game with a little patience, and then Corey Seager finished the rally with one big swing. Seager capped Los Angeles six-run eighth inning with his first career grand slam, helping the Dodgers sweep the Cincinnati Reds with a 9-7 victory on Sunday.

Rookie Cody Bellinger sparked Los Angeles rally with one-out drive against Austin Brice. Rasiel Iglesias (2-1) replaced Brice with a runner on first and walked three straight batters to force in a run, trimming Cincinnati s lead to 7-5. Seager then hit a drive to center for his ninth homer. You just kind of got to slow it down, Seager said. Just try to get to the next guy, keep the line moving and try to get a win. Seager also beat Cincinnati on Saturday night with an RBI double in the ninth for his first game-ending hit at any level. Outside of the skill set and the confidence because you ve obviously got a very confident young player it s his ability to be able to control the pulse, manager Dave Roberts said. He s a guy that hits good pitching and performs in big spots, and he did again today. Bellinger also homered in the second and Chase Utley connected in the fifth for the Dodgers, who have won four straight. Luis Avilan (1-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win, and Kenley Jansen got three outs for his 200th career save. Adam Duvall, Scott Schebler, Joey Votto and Devin Mesoraco homered for the Reds, who dropped their sixth consecutive road game. Those are the tough ones, manager Bryan Price said. You re going to have a few of those. Hopefully only a couple a year where those leads get away late. But they happen every year. Duvall led off the second with a drive to left and Schebler added a two-run homer, helping the Reds to a 3-0 lead. It was Duvall s 15th homer and No. 18 for Schebler. After Votto connected for a solo shot in the third, Utley belted a solo drive in the fifth that went off the glove of center fielder Billy Hamilton. The Reds opened a 7-3 lead on Mesoraco s three-run homer off Ross Stripling in the sixth. TRAINER S ROOM Reds: Duvall made his first start after missing two games with an illness.... LHP Brandon Finnegan (shoulder strain) made his first rehab start for Double-A Pensacola, throwing three scoreless innings. Dodgers: LHP Scott Kazmir (hip) remains at the team s Arizona facility, building up arm strength through a weighted-ball program. Roberts said he was up to throwing mph but they were working on him being able to maintain it. Roberts said they expect him to make a rehab start soon. CLASSIC WALK Enrique Hernandez put together a 13-pitch at-bat against Iglesias in the eighth, one that included eight foul balls, before walking to load the bases. The Hernandez at-bat was as good as you can get, really, Price said. I thought he just did a tremendous job. Fought off some tough pitches. GONZALEZ HURTING Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez left in the seventh after complaining his back locked up again. He said he has two herniated disks and an MRI is scheduled. Tried my best to put together good at-bats and keep hitting pitches that I normally hit, but my body s not letting me get there, so you ve got to do what s best for the team, he said. UP NEXT Reds: RHP Bronson Arroyo (3-4, 6.25 ERA) is scheduled to pitch the series opener Monday in San Diego. Arroyo, 40, missed two seasons following elbow and shoulder surgeries. In his 13 starts this season, he has yet to pitch past the sixth inning. Dodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (8-2, 2.20 ERA) pitches Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series in Cleveland. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner is having another dominating season. He has held opponents to a.204 batting average.
