CY WILLIAMS- Player (played with Cubs and 13 with Phillies) Born in Wadena, Indiana 1887-remembered both for 19 years as standout professional ball player and many architectural works in Three Lakes, WI area. Architecture student at Notre Dame-fine collegiate sprinter and hurdler and played football with Knute Rockne. It was strong hitting centerfielder that he gained attention of the Cubs who brought him directly to major leagues after graduation. From 1915 through 1927 he was one of the National Leagues most prolific sluggers, winning or sharing four home run titles and finishing among the league s top three in homers 11 times. He tied New York s Dave Robertson for NL lead with 12 HR in Nevertheless, in one of the worst deals in Cubs history he was traded, after less productive 1917 season, to Philadelphia for Dode Paskert. He starred for the Phillies and his dead pull left-handed stroke was ideally suited to Baker bowl. It was for Cy that the first Williams shift was created; managers would load up the right side with fielders knowing it was unlikely he would hit the ball to left. His 15 HR s in 1920 won him his second crown and in 1923 he hit 41 HR, 19 more than NL runner up to tie Babe Ruth for the ML lead. He shared his last homers title with Chicago s Hack Wilson hitting 30 in He hit 12 inside the park homers and seven grand slams, and his 11 pinch hit homers was record until From 1918 through his last season he raised his career batting average every year. He topped the.300 mark six times with high of.345 in Williams had lived in Three Lakes, WI during the off season and returned there for good after his career was over. Became a well known designer and builder with many of his works still notable today. Died April 23, 1974 at age of 86 in Eagle River, WI. 5 December 2018 INDIANA H.S. BASEBALL NEWS Page 5 FUTURE S GAME NOMINATION PROCEDURE The IHSBCA will be replacing the Junior Showcase with a Futures Game. This is because college coaches not only want to see the players workout, but also see them involved in competition. We will still be taking recommendations for the showcase / futures game from college coaches, as in the past, and high school coaches can still recommend players via the district meetings at the state clinic. We will continue to compile our player list, as in the past, and all of this will be done through your district rep. Our coaches do an outstanding job of getting the player list information to our reps and we thank you for that! Please continue to recommend players and classify them for recruiting purposes. This is valuable information for the college coaches. PASSWORD SOURCE Passwords will no longer be issued at the state clinic. Passwords are necessary to submit team and game information. Please contact Brian Abbott (babbott@ctlnet.com) for a password. IHSBCA Line-Up Cards Line-up cards will again be available at the clinic in the lobby area near the registration table. Cost is $10 per pack of 40 line-up cards. You save $5.00 postage per packet if they are purchased at the clinic. INSURANCE BOOKMARK Each member coach can print off insurance information from our website when they join the coaches association for It outlines all the coverage you receive with your annual IHSBCA dues. This coverage is also good if you give baseball lessons. VICTORY CLUB During the 2018 season, I won my th Varsity Game. I have been coaching for years. COACHES NAME: Current High School: this information to Jeff McKeon (jmckeon@plainfield.k12.in.us) DEADLINE DECEMBER 31st College coaches are encouraged to notify us of your victory levels achieved.
6 Page 6 INDIANA H.S. BASEBALL NEWS Volume XLVI ISSUE 2 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR UPDATE AND HOF DONATIONS Seasons Greetings! Christmas is a time to give thanks for all of the blessings we have experienced throughout the year and to embrace the joy of giving. I pray that each of you has a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Your IHSBCA leadership has been busy meeting and planning the year s upcoming events. The January clinic will soon be upon us and the registration process is well underway. Plan on attending and bringing your staff! This is an excellent time to start getting ready for the spring season, network and fellowship with other coaches, and hear some great speakers. Our clinic rates have not increased for many years and we are still offering staff discounts to help make it affordable to attend. We would love to see you in January! We are always looking for sponsorships to help keep our clinic costs down, especially with the Hall of Fame Banquet. If you have suggestions for individuals and / or groups that would be interested in sharing in the mission of the IHSBCA please put them in contact with me. I would welcome the opportunity to speak with them. The Hall of Fame fundraising project for the expansion in Jasper is still underway. We have asked schools to give either $50 or $100 donations as a part of the clinic registration process and multiple schools have jumped on board. Thank you very much! I apologize for all of the financial information, but I learned a long time ago to share one s needs with others..if you never ask, people never know. There are two major changes this year with the state finals and the North-South all-star series. The state finals will be on a Monday / Tuesday (June 17-18) format this year only and the all-star series will be the following weekend (June 21-23). We decided to move the all-star series to accommodate the summer shutdown of senior players by the colleges. This is something we have considered for several years and are finally going to implement it. Due to this change, the spring nomination meetings will the Sunday BEFORE Memorial Day this year so stay tuned. The recent games survey that was sent out by the district reps has received approximately 200 responses as of the posting of the newsletter. We will be taking input until December 21 so please contact your district rep if you have not received the survey links via . Your comments have been excellent so far and show that our coaches are well thought, well spoken, and passionate about the game of baseball. Finally, a personal thought. Recently, I had the privilege of sharing at the funeral for one of our Hall of Fame members who was a good friend of mine. I was impressed by how many lives this man impacted through the game of baseball. Don t ever underestimate the value that your life brings in your role as a coach. You touch people in a way that other human beings cannot. I know the days are long and the battles are trying somedays, but, remember, your presence and guidance has a lifelong impact on those that you serve. In Baseball, Brian Abbott IHSBCA Executive Director babbott@ctlnet.com ASSISTANT COACH AWARDS Head Coaches help us recognize your assistants for all their dedication and years of service. If you have an assistant coach who is in his th year of coaching, please send the coaches name and years of service to Coach Dudley so that we can recognize him at the State Clinic in January.
