Season outlook With 16 newcomers, the 2003 Utah baseball team suffered through frustrating growing pains, finishing the season overall and in the Mountain West Conference, good for fifth place in the six-team league. With the addition of a new pitching coach and the return of six of eight starting position players, Head Coach Tim Esmay is extremely optimistic about the possibilities for the Utes in We have much more experience both on and off the mound this season, he claims. We ve had enough guys go through the fire experience the good and the bad. We all know that we re better now because we ve been through both. Esmay and the Utes have some pretty lofty goals for the season, including winning both the conference regular season crown and MWC Tournament, and winning 40 or more games. I believe these goals are realistic because of the combination of our experienced returners and a talented group of newcomers that we ve added, he says. Junior Matt Ciaramella is a two-time all-mwc outfielder. Leading the position players will be seniors Jared Pena and Eric Chevalier, and junior Matt Ciaramella, all three of whom enjoyed success last year. In addition, the Ute pitching staff returns all three of its regular starters from a year ago Doug Mackay, Jason Price and Clay Westmoreland. Below is a position-by-position breakdown of the 2004 Utes. Lefthander Jason Price got valuable experience on the mound last year as a freshman. He will be the Saturday starter this season. Price, the projected Saturday starter, posted the second-lowest opponent batting average (.285) on last year s team. Jason had a good freshman year and an outstanding fall, Esmay notes. It s nice to have a quality lefty in the rotation and he s already pitched in high pressure, big-time games and proven he s a winner. The Sunday starter will likely be freshman Eric Schaler, who went 7-0 with a 1.54 ERA last year as a senior in high school and was drafted in the 48th round by the Yankees. Eric is an unproven freshman with lots of talent, Esmay says. He matured faster than anticipated and we re excited to see what he s capable of doing. Westmoreland, a two-time MWC Pitcher of the Week in 2003, has been moved out of the starting lineup to a new role as a closer. Esmay s hope is that Westmoreland will address the loss to an LDS mission of Brady Martinez, Utah s primary closer and a second-team all-mwc pick last year. The decision was made to use Clay s abilities in more than one game each weekend, Esmay notes. Our hope is that when the eighth inning rolls around, the game is over when we give the ball to Clay. In addition, Esmay says that the other pitchers each have defined roles going into the season. We ve pieced together a staff that pitches to particular situations, he says. Every pitcher on our team will be a Senior Eric Chevalier ended last season in the midst factor and will get of a 23-game hitting streak and led the team in innings. Pitchers Bryan Conger, who has extensive coaching experience at the Division II and junior college levels, joined the Utes in the offseason and looks to turn around a pitching staff that posted a combined ERA of 6.20 last season. At his last school, Conger s pitching staff set school records for ERA, strikeouts, saves and appearances, and Esmay hopes Conger can have similar results here. Bryan has proven he s a winner everywhere he s been, Esmay notes. His experience and success definitely set him apart. We re very excited to bring him into the program. Conger will have plenty to work with as Utah returns Mackay, Price and Westmoreland. Mackay, who will be the Friday starter, led the team in strikeouts (70) last season. Doug has established himself as the catalyst of the pitching staff, Esmay says. We re definitely looking for him to start each weekend out on a positive for us. He is the leader of the pitching staff. batting average with a

season outlook Catchers Behind the plate, Utah returns senior Nate Schlieman, who saw time as a backup last season and appears to have battled through back problems. Nate is the leader of the defense, Esmay says. It s nice to know that he ll be counted on to be in the lineup after coming off an injury. Sharing the starting role with Schlieman will be junior Trevor Eastman, a transfer from Salt Lake Community College. Eastman was a second-team all-region pick last year and ranked second on the team with a.328 batting average. Trevor should continue the long line of tradition established at Utah as a very good hitting catcher, Esmay claims. We re looking for a big year for him. In addition, Shane Miles, a freshman from Carbondale, Kan., who posted a.427 batting average in high school, will also see time. Shane is a talented freshman who has a chance to learn from the other two. Senior second baseman Jared Pena was one of three Utes named to the allconference team last season. Infield Pena, a first-team all-conference second baseman last season, will anchor the Ute infield. Also returning are third baseman Cort Wilson, who was named to the MWC Championship alltournament team, sophomore shortstop Ryan Khoury, who started 46 games last year, and senior first baseman Mike Westfall, a two-time all-conference pick. We have a very mature, veteran infield, Esmay notes. Our defense should be the strength of our team. The Utes also have four players that will be used in Sophomore Ryan Khoury got valuable experience last backup roles in the season as the starting shortstop. infield. Leading the group is freshman Jay Brossman, who was a three-time first-team all-league shortstop in high school. Brossman will play shortstop, second base and third base. Jay is one of the most talented freshmen ever in our program, Esmay claims. He will be our utility guy. Clayne Garrett, who posted a.316 batting average in two seasons at Dixie State College, will see time at first base, third base and designated hitter. Clayne is a lefthander with a very good offensive bat, Esmay says. Jake Waldram, who redshirted last season, will be used at first base, as a designated hitter and in certain situations. Jake was the biggest surprise of the fall, Esmay notes. He has proven to be a top-quality Division I hitter. Rounding out the group is Mike Mitchell, a walk-on who will back up Pena at second base. Mike is a quality walk-on, Esmay claims. Outfield The Ute outfield is loaded with talent. This is the most talented outfield as a group that we ve had since I ve been here, Esmay says. Ciaramella, a two-time all-mwc outfielder and Chevalier, who led the Utes in batting average and didn t commit any errors last season, will lead the way. One of four newcomers junior transfers Tyson Olson, TJ Floyd and Tyler Kay, or freshman John Welsh will fill the third spot. Olson was a two-time all-conference pick at Dixie State College, while Floyd started 51 games last year at Utah Valley State. Kay was named team MVP and second-team all-region at Salt Lake Community College, and Welsh was a first-team all-state pick by the Deseret News in 2003 after hitting.458. Those four are all fighting for the left field spot and for quality overall backups, Esmay explains. There s a good chance that whoever s not playing left field will be our DH. Overall With the combination of experience, depth and new blood, Esmay is more excited about this season than any in recent years. We have all of the ingredients for success and I really think we re going to be able to put it all together this year, he explains. This year is going to be Utah baseball like you ve never seen it before. Third baseman Cort Wilson was named to the alltournament team at the MWC Championships last year. 3

HeaD CoAch In 2002, Esmay guided Utah to a overall and conference record. The 33 wins is the second most in school history since 1963, and the second-place league finish is the Utes best since joining the MWC in 99. Senior pitcher Mitch Maio garnered 2002 MWC Co-Player of the honors. The year also saw the fall of several team and individual records under Esmay s direction. Last season, the Utes went overall and in MWC play, with 12 of the Utes 32 losses coming by two runs or less. Three Utes Jared Pena, Matt Ciaramella and Brady Martinez were named to the all-conference team. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Arizona State. He stayed at ASU for five years as an assistant coach under Jim Brock and Jeff Pentland (the current hitting coach for the Kansas City Royals). Esmay coached for two years at Brophy College Prep High School in Phoenix, Ariz., before returning to Arizona State as a volunteer assistant to Brock in 94. He coached at Grand Canyon University in 1995, then made his move to Utah as Bill Kinneberg s assistant in 96. He also served as a head coach in the Arizona Summer Collegiate League from A talented player in his own right, Esmay played at Arizona State from and was a member of the ASU team that appeared in the 1987 College World Series. Esmay hit.308 in his two years as a Sun Devil and was named to the all-west Region team. He played at Scottsdale Community College from , where he was named a junior college All-American. Esmay earned a bachelor s degree in physical education from Arizona State in 88. The 38-year-old Esmay and his wife Joell are the parents of two sons, Tucker and Cooper. Tim ESmay Head Coach Eighth Arizona State 88 Tim Esmay enters his eighth season as Utah s head baseball coach. Esmay comes into the season with a overall record and a career conference mark. During his seven seasons at the U., 15 of his athletes have gone on to play professional baseball. Most recently, Sean Overholt, Nate Weese, Mitch Maio, Donnie Saba, Jason Wylie and Donald Hawes signed with professional teams. In his first season directing the Utah baseball program, Esmay did what no Ute coach had done in 32 years when he led Utah to a WAC division title and a record in The Utes posted a 22-8 record in the Northern Division that year. They also set nine school records as Esmay was named the 1997 Louisville Slugger WAC Coach of the. In his second year as head coach, the Utes finished with a 2331 record and went in the WAC to place third in the Northern Division. Esmay coached two major league draft picks in John Summers (12th round to the Dodgers) and Nate Forbush (15th round to the Tigers). In 99, the Utes finished with an 8-20 WAC record. That season, three of Esmay s former athletes played in the minor leagues: Lance Ericksen (Astros), Ryan Johnerson (Reds) and Jared Larsen (Toronto). During the 2000 season, Utah compiled a record while going in the new MWC. Esmay led the Utes to a third place finish in the league. The Utes finished third in the league posting a overall mark and a conference record in 01. Esmay led the Utes to one of the their biggest wins in history when they upset No. 7 Nebraska in a tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. In addition, the pitching staff set the school record for strikeouts in a season, set the conference record for strikeouts in a game, ranked third nationally in strikeouts per game (individual, 1999), and had two individual pitchers ranked in the Top 25 in the country in ERA. During his collegiate career, Conger was his team s Comeback Player of the in 94 and was named Most Valuable Pitcher in He then spent two years as a professional baseball player with Pine Bluff in the Texas-Louisiana League. Conger earned a bachelor s degree in speech communication in 1995, and a master s degree in education with an emphasis in exercise and sports studies in 1999, both from Tarleton State. Matt Eeles Assistant Coach Third Utah 97 Former Ute Matt Eeles enters his third season as an assistant coach. Eeles played outfield for the U. in 1996 and 97 and was team captain his senior year. Before transferring to Utah, he played two years at Cerritos Junior College in Norwalk, Calif. At Cerritos, Eeles was voted first-team allconference and was the Dallas Moon Award winner during his sophomore year. During the summer of 2003, Eeles served as an assistant coach for the Brewster Whitecaps of the prestigious Cape Cod League. The team, armed with the league MVP, went and tied for first place in their division. His team placed second in the 03 Jayhawk Conference Tournament and captured the school s first-ever postseason victories. His pitching staff set school records for ERA, strikeouts, saves and appearances, and he had two all-conference pitching selections. From , Conger served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colo. During his tenure there, the team won back-to-back conference championships, made the school s first-ever Junior College World Series appearance, earned a national ranking for the first time in the history of the program and set the school record for wins. Conger s pitching staff at Lamar also enjoyed great success, setting school records for ERA, strikeouts, saves, shutouts and appearances. He also had four pitchers rank in the top 20 nationally in strikeouts. Meanwhile, four of his pitchers were drafted, five signed with Division I programs and he produced six all-region selections. Prior to his work at Lamar, Conger served as the pitching coach at his alma mater, Tarleton State University. The U. was named 22 one of five finalists in the science category of the 1998 Computerworld Smithsonian Awards. Back in 1970, the U. became the fourth node on the Internet. The annual issue of U.S.News & World Report ranked Utah as one of 78 second tier Universities in 2002, which places the U. somewhere between among American colleges (rankings outside the top 50 are listed alphabetically). Only six schools in the Mountain West region made Tier 2: Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver and Brigham Young. According to the U.S. News data, Utah s 3.2 rating would place it No. 24 among all public institutions and No. 8 among its second-tier peers. U.S.News & World Report was also impressed with Utah s athletic department, placing the U. on its Honor Roll of College Sports along with 19 other schools in Utah was one of just three schools west of the Mississippi that made the list. The University of Utah, one of the state s largest employers, has the only medical, social work, architecture and pharmacy schools in a multi-state area. Its many top-flight facilities include a center for dance, a health sciences center, public radio and television stations, three libraries and numerous centers and laboratories devoted to research. The U. provides a lot of fun, too. Over a million people enjoy the University of Utah s athletic, entertainment and cultural offerings each year. And Utah is known as a site of championships in the athletic arena, having served as host to a number of national tournaments, including the 1979 NCAA Basketball Final Four, eight National Women s Gymnastics Championships, three NCAA Ski Championships and two National Women s Tennis Championships.

on-campus living There s a new style of living at the University of Utah, which became a residential campus in the fall of 2000, when students moved into the beautiful new Heritage Commons. The living-learning community, home to some 2,500 students, is the heart of campus activity and exudes a vibrant, energetic college town atmosphere. Situated in historic Fort Douglas at the mouth of Red Butte Canyon, and located on 70 acres of land, the expansive 912,000 square foot residential complex boasts picturesque views of Salt Lake City and the surrounding mountain ranges. Heritage Commons received world-wide acclaim last winter when it served as the Athletes Village during the XIX Olympic Winter and Paralympic Games, hosted by Salt Lake City. Some 3,500 athletes and officials called Heritage Commons home during that time. After the Games, Heritage Commons reverted to its intended role as a student residential center. Heritage Commons consists of 21 buildings 20 residential and one for dining and support services. 26 salt lake city Salt Lake City, home to the University of Utah, is one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in America. Its location between two magnificent mountain ranges and a booming economy made Salt Lake City the natural choice to host the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Salt Lake City beckons major events like the Olympics with its beauty, location, economic strength, cultural and recreational opportunities and accessibility to the world. Money Magazine agreed, naming Salt Lake the West s most livable city in its December 2000 issue. Surrounded by awe-inspiring geographical landmarks, Salt Lake City offers majestic views in all directions. To the east are the 11,500-foot peaks of the Wasatch Mountains ( mountains of many waters, as named by the Paiute Indians), the western-most Rocky Mountain range. To the west soar the Oquirrh Mountains (pronounced Oaker and meaning the shining mountains ). In between is the Great Salt Lake, also known as America s Dead Sea. It is the world s second largest saltwater lake and is nine times saltier than an ocean. Salt Lake s economy matches its natural wonders in impressiveness. City and State magazine, which is published for local government officials, ranked Salt Lake No. 1 among 195 cities in terms of economic strength. With a metropolitan population of 1,333,914, Salt Lake is the financial, educational, distribution, warehousing, commercial, cultural and communications hub of the Intermountain region. It is also center to world-renowned medical and technological industries. Of the 50 states, Utah has the second-largest concentration of computer software firms, one of the four largest concentrations of biomedical firms and 450 high tech firms employing 13,000 people. Tourism is also a big employer. Skiing is a $500 million annual industry in Utah and most of those dollars are generated in the Salt Lake area. The 2002 Winter Olympics added millions of dollars to an already burgeoning Salt Lake economy. Seven world-class ski resorts are located within 30 minutes of Salt Lake International Airport and downtown Salt Lake, with four more less than an hour s drive away. Cultural activities also flourish in Salt Lake City. The area enjoys a broad base of cultural, ethnic and religious diversity. Salt Lake has more professional dance companies than any city other than New York City and also boasts professional symphony, opera and theater. Fifteen art galleries are located in the downtown area. Hispanic, Native American and Asian/ Pacific residents have higher numbers than the national average in Salt Lake City, while the African-American community is vibrant and growing. Professional sports are big in Salt Lake City, with a National Basketball Association franchise (the Utah Jazz), Triple A baseball (the Salt Lake Stingers) and AHL hockey (the Utah Grizzlies). Recreational opportunities abound, with 11 national parks less than a day s drive from Salt Lake City. Fly fishing, backpacking, mountain biking and river running are a part of life in Salt Lake City. 24 The Weather s Great 237 days of sunshine per year 15 percent humidity average Average Temperature Highs August September October November December January February March April May June July LIFE Magazine has ranked Salt Lake City one of the top vacation getaways in the country. With four distinct seasons, a humidity average of 15 percent and mostly sunny days, Salt Lake offers pleasant weather conditions year round. Salt Lake City s charms are easily accessible even to those from out of state. Salt Lake International Airport, the 25th busiest in the United States, is less than three hours flying time from half the population of the U.S. There are more than 500 daily arrivals and departures and eight major airlines operate from the airport. It is closer to the heart of the city it serves than any other major airport in the United States.

T he University of Utah is committed to both academic and athletic excellence. The committment has been proven by the effort to stay up to date with its facilities, both on and off the field.
