Notre Dame has emerged with a record at or above.5 in the opening tournament of each season dating back to the 23 campaign. TOUGH TOURNEY SLEDDING AHEAD Beginning with this weekend s ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Raleigh, each of the next nine games on the Notre Dame schedule will feature opponents either ranked in or on the cusp of the national top 25 polls. For reference, in a nonconference slate of games since 995, the most ranked foes the Irish have played consecutively was three in 996 and again in 25. Upcoming Notre Dame opponents include current No. 3 Minnesota (twice), No. / Michigan (twice), No. RV Texas, No. 7/9 Missouri, No. NR/2 Arizona State, No. 2 Georgia and No. 4/6 Oklahoma. IRISH AGAINST THE BIG TEN Entering its first ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Notre Dame brings a rich tradition to the softball diamond against Big Ten foes. Against the current Big Ten membership the Irish own a -8 (.579) record, and have faced every league team with the exception of Illinois (only current P5 softball team never to have played Notre Dame). REED ROCKS OUT OF THE GATES Junior infielder Morgan Reed started red hot out of the blocks for the Notre Dame offense during the opening weekend of the 27 season, batting a team-high.643 (9-for-4) with three, an.857 slugging percentage and two runs over her first five starts. Reed began the year 2-for-3 with a stolen base against Weber State on Feb., adding two hits, including an triple, and two runs later that day against Long Beach State. She then collected four hits in six at-bats the following day in a sweep of South Dakota and San Diego State before notching a base knock to close the weekend at No. 8 UCLA. A two-time NFCA all-region and all-acc selection, Reed has the longest active hit streak among Notre Dame players (nine games) dating back to last season. Under Gumpf s guidance the Irish have made 5 consecutive trips to NCAA Regionals, claiming four conference tournament titles during that span. Even more, Notre Dame staked claim to the BIG EAST Conference s regular season championship during her first four seasons on the bench (22-5). The Irish hoisted BIG EAST regular season hardware again in 2, 2, and the program s final year as a conference member in 23 before transitioning to the Atlantic Coast Conference prior to the 24 campaign. The Notre Dame coaching staff has received eight prominent honors during Gumpf s tenure, being tabbed as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Mideast Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 22 and 24, the NFCA Mid- Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 24 and 26, and the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year in 22, 24, 2 and 23. Gumpf has compiled a career record of (.79) in her 5-plus seasons at Notre Dame, placing her among the elite skippers in the NCAA. Gumpf joined legendary fencing coach Michael DeCicco and Hall of Fame women s basketball coach Muffet McGraw as the only varsity athletics mentors to win 6 or more games during their Notre Dame tenures with a 5- victory over Central Florida on Feb. 26, 26. Gumpf reached the summit as the all-time winningest Irish softball/baseball coach after surpassing longtime baseball skipper Jake Kline (934-75) with her 559th career win against Missouri on Feb. 27, 25. Gumpf also ranks in the top 2 in winning percentage among all active NCAA Division I softball coaches with a career clip of.78. During Gumpf s tenure, 4 different Notre Dame players have earned NFCA All-America honors, with Andrea Loman (22-3), Megan Ciolli (24-5), Emilee Koerner (23-5) and Karley Wester (24 & 26) being recognized as multi-time All- Americans. Koerner, the 25 ACC Player of the Year, became the first player in program history to earn three All-America citations by being named to that season s NFCA All-America third team after earning second team honors in 23 and a third team citation in 24. The Irish have also produced 64 NFCA all-region performers, six conference players of the year, four conference pitchers of the year, two conference freshman of the year selections, 96 all-conference recipients, three USA Softball National Player of the Year finalists (Karley Wester 25-6, Emilee Koerner 23), and two NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year finalists (Ali Wester 26, Karley Wester 24) since 22. A native of La Palma, California, Gumpf (née Mays) played at the University of Nebraska from while earning a degree in business management. Gumpf was an all-big Eight Conference second team selection in 99 and an honorable mention pick in both 989 and 99. Prior to her collegiate success in Lincoln, Gumpf enjoyed an outstanding prep career with Gordon s Panthers, one of the most dominating Amateur Softball Association teams in Southern California.
