FRANCO S FINEST: The Florida State League announce Fire Frogs RHP Enderson Franco as the Pitcher of the Week for the week of Aug The native of Anaco, Venezuela held the Daytona Tortugas off the scoreboard on Aug. 25 in a 2-1 victory at Osceola County Stadium, while setting a career-high with eight innings pitched, and tying a career-high with nine strikeouts... The 24-year-old allowed five hits and walked two, while dishing in 98 pitches (65 strikes). HIT THE SHOWERS: Monday marked the 16th time in the second half a Fire Frogs game had been either canceled or postponed due to rain/wet grounds/inclement weather...florida had nine games in the first half called due to weather, with the first occurence happening on May 2 against the Palm Beach Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium...Two other road games this season have been affected by weather (July 12 at Lakeland and July 28 at Jupiter), with one game being completed early due to rain (Aug. 11 at Jupiter - L, 2-1 in six innings). LAGO WALKS IT OFF FOR 5-4 VICTORY: Alay Lago smacked a line-drive single into center field, driving home Alejandro Salazar and Anfernee Seymour to cap off the Florida Fire Frogs, 5-4 comeback in game one of Sunday s rain-shortened doubleheader against the Daytona Tortugas at Osceola County Stadium...The win gave the Fire Frogs their first sweep of an opponent in a series of two games, or more. KEEP ON KROLLING: MLB rehabber Ian Krol tossed two scoreless innings of relief for Florida...The southpaw gave up a double to Blake Butler in the third with Chris Okey at first, but Alejandro Salazar s relay throw to the plate nailed to run to leave a run off the board. RACE TO THE TOP: Alay Lago enters the final eight games of the season with an outside chance of finishing with the best average in the Florida State league during the entire 2017 campaign...after picking up a hit on Sunday, the second baseman kept his average at.299 (tops among active FSL players)...if the native of Cuba averages four at-bats per game over the final nine contests, the 26-year-old will need to finish with at least 15 hits (133-for-427) to tie Brandon Lowe (CHA) with a.311 mark for first place in the league (minimum 2.7 PA/team game)... 8 Manager, Rocket Wheeler COACHING STAFF After spending his first 14 seasons in the organization as a minor league manager, Rocket Wheeler moves into an on-field advisor role for the 2017 season. Wheeler spent six seasons, from 2011 to 2016, skippering the Braves High-A affiliate. In his 14 seasons as a minor-league manager, he has amassed a (.473) record with the Braves organization Overall, his managerial record is 1,343-1,470 (.477) spanning 24 seasons. His managerial stops within the Braves organization include rookie-level Danville (2015), rookie-level Gulf Coast League ( ), Double-A Mississippi (2011), High-A Myrtle Beach/Carolina ( and 2016) and Low-A Rome ( ). In 2009, he managed the Carolina League All-Star Game. In 2008, Wheeler garnered the prestigious honor of being named by Baseball America as the Minor League Manager of the Year, as well as the Carolina League Manager of the Year after leading Myrtle Beach to a franchise-record 89 regular-season wins. In 2003, he led Rome to the South Atlantic League Championship, earning Braves Minor League Manager of the Year honors. During the 2008 off-season, Wheeler piloted the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League. Prior to joining the Atlanta organization, he spent 26 seasons ( ) in the Toronto Blue Jays organization as a player, coach and manager. He was named the 1999 Florida State League Manager of the Year (Dunedin Blue Jays) and in 1996 while at St. Catharine, he was awarded the inaugural Bobby Mattick Award for excellence in player development after being named the Manager of the Year in the New York-Penn League. His coaching career began in 1981 while he was a full-time player at Florence (A) of the South Atlantic League. In 1997, he was a 13th-round draft pick by the Toronto Blue Jays out of the University of Houston He went on to play six seasons in the Toronto farm system While playing baseball for the Cougars, he majored in health and physical education. Rocket resides in the Myrtle Beach, S.C., area and has one son, Marty, and a daughter, Kate. Hitting Coach, Carlos Mendez The 2017 season marks Carlos Mendez s 10th season overall in the Braves organization and his fourth season as a hitting coach with the Club s High-A affliate. Mendez joined the organization in 2008 and has spent his first eight seasons as a hitting coach at four different levels across the farm system. In 2014, he opened the season with rookie-level Danville before being assigned as the hitting coach for the Lynchburg Hillcats in mid-april. From 2011 to 2012, Mendez served as the Rome Braves hitting coach...he spent the 2013 season with the Gulf Coast League Braves in the same role. Spent his first three seasons with the club, 2008 to 2010, as the hitting instructor for the rookie-level Danville Braves. The former first baseman and designated hitter was originally signed by the Kansas City Royals as a non-drafted free agent in During his 16-year ( ) career, Mendez posted an overall minor-league batting average of.297 while playing with five organizations including Kansas City, Detroit, Oakland, Baltimore and Atlanta. In 2003, Mendez spent nearly four months with the Baltimore Orioles over two stints and played in 26 games for the Club. Carlos and his wife Cortney have two children, Carlos Jr., and Tatiana, and reside in Wilmington, Del. Pitching Coach, Dennis Lewallyn The 2017 season marks Dennis Lewallyn s 46th season in professional baseball, including his 35th year in a coaching role. Lewallyn joined the organization in 2013 and worked his first four seasons as the club s Double-A pitching coach 2017 marks his first season as Atlanta s High-A pitching coach. He spent six seasons, from 2007 to 2012, as a part of the Chicago Cubs farm system, spending his final two years as their minor league pitching coordinator. From 2007 to 2010, he served as the Cubs Double-A pitching coach. He spent 11 years ( ) as a coach with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization...he originally joined the D-backs when the team was formed through expansion in 1996 as the pitching coach for the Lethbridge Black Diamonds (Rookie). He was Arizona s Major League bullpen coach during the second half of the 2004 season. From 2002 to 2006 he was the D-backs minor league pitching coordinator. From 1996 to 2001 he worked as a pitching coach in the D-backs system: Lethbridge (R, 1996), South Bend (A, 1997), High Desert (A, 1998) and El Paso (AA, ). Lewallyn began his coaching career in 1983 with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and spent the next 13 seasons (through 1995 season) in various pitching coach roles. A former first-round draft selection (eighth overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers, he pitched for three teams (Los Angeles, ; Texas, 1980; Cleveland, ) over an 11-year career, including parts of eight seasons at the Major League level.
