4 2010 Outlook The Northern Illinois University softball team took its first step toward returning to prominence in the Mid-American Conference last season as the Huskies posted their best conference record since 2003 and made a run in the 2009 MAC Softball Tournament, advancing to the semifinals. This season, the task at hand for the Huskies is to build off the success of last year and take that next step in becoming a power in the league. The way the girls played at the end of the year not only showed them what they re capable of, but showed them how hard work and sticking to the program works and pays off for them, NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. When they look back on last year, they look at that and it keeps them motivated. In order to take that next step, the Huskies will have to replace the production of last year s five seniors. The class of 2009 accounted for 40 percent of the Huskie offense, driving in 61 of NIU s 150 runs and totaling 119 of the team s 305 hits. Aside from their numbers, the seniors also provided a great deal of leadership. We graduated some seniors that were big contributors and great leaders for us, Chouinard said. They really helped the freshmen and sophomores develop. This year, we re looking to reap those benefits. Infield The area hit hardest by graduation was the NIU infield. The Huskies lost three of their four starting infielders from a year ago, including All-MAC performers Bailey Ouellette at first base and third baseman Emily Gooding. Despite the losses, Chouinard is confident the Huskies will be able fill the vacancies. In the infield, we have so much more depth than in the two years I ve been here, she said. We have some people that have had significant experience [in the infield] to add with the two other middle infielders brought in this year. Anchoring the infield for Northern Illinois this season is Andrea Colosimo. Colosimo played predominantly in the outfield last year, but made five starts at first base, including the final three games of NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard enters her third season at NIU looking to build on the success of the 2009 season. the MAC Tournament where she was named to the conference s all-tournament team. Andi is just a wonderful person and anybody would be happy to have her on their team, Chouinard said. She does everything you ask of her. She s a very diligent worker and understands the vision. She followed wonderfully behind the seniors and wants to lead now. As a junior, that s exactly what I need her to do. Sophomore Krista Matsui is the lone returning full-time starter in the infield for NIU. She made 42 starts at shortstop for NIU last season and has worked hard on her offense this offseason, making the switch from a left-handed to a right-handed batter. Carly Norton started 29 games at catcher and 16 at third base last year, showing her versatility, will vie for playing time at the hot corner in Freshman Amanda Sheppard and Adriana Sanchez are two talented newcomers that are expected to contribute immediately. Sheppard is capable of playing anywhere in the infield, while Sanchez provides some pop with her bat. Another freshman, Alex Wulbecker, plays both corner positions adding to the Huskies infield depth. Adriana is extremely powerful and she loves softball, Chouinard said. She loves to play, she loves to hit, and she loves to grind it. Those kinds of players are hard to find; the people that understand the grinding portion of it and love the grind. When I saw Amanda I knew immediately I had to have her. She s athletic in the field. She never has a problem leaving her feet, takes pride in the way she plays and has worked very hard on the offensive side of her game. At catcher, senior Michelle Williams and Norton split time behind the plate last season with Williams making 25 starts. Senior Allie Parker, who will be playing her fourth and final season at NIU, also provides a veteran presence behind the dish. Andrea Colosimo was named to the 2009 MAC Softball All-Tournament Team, going 5-of-10 from the plate with a double and three RBIs. Outfield With Colosimo moving to the infield and the graduation of centerfielder Jenna Roberts, there are two openings in the outfield 2010 NIU Softball 2

5 2010 Outlook Segura and Whitney Owens, to the staff, providing depth to the position they didn t have last year. They re both primarily pitchers and that s wonderful, Chouinard said. They all do different things. Monica had a great fall. She threw really well against DePaul and Eastern Illinois. She s working towards consistency. Whitney throws different than the other pitchers I have on staff. She brings a different dimension. Morgan Bittner was named to the MAC s All-Freshman Team and earned second team All-MAC honors in that need to be filled. It is a battle Chouinard anticipates lasting all season long. The outfield is going to be a grudge match all year, she said. We have a lot of different styles and a lot of people that have worked really hard. Zoe Sinner started 35 games in the outfield for Northern Illinois last season and provides experience at the corner outfield slots. Three other returners and a freshman will compete for the other two outfield spots. Sophomores Ashley Cann and Dani Parrish have impressed the coaching staff with their work ethic in the offseason. Parrish started 32 games for the Huskies in 2009, 22 in the outfield and 10 as designated hitter and Cann made three of her eight starts last season in the outfield. Senior Kate Welsh adds experience, while freshman Jennifer Barnett brings a solid offensive game. Pitching While Chouinard feels the 2010 Huskies are stronger offensively and deeper defensively, she knows NIU will go only as far as its pitching takes it. At the end of the day, it s going to come down to pitching, said the former DePaul All-American pitcher. Anybody who plays our sport knows that. Sophomore Morgan Bittner leads the way for the Huskie pitching staff. She was a second team All-MAC honoree and was also named to the MAC s All-Freshman Team in 2009, after posting a record and compiling an ERA of She struck out 166 batters, placing her fourth on the school s all-time list for strikeouts in a season. Morgan is coming back in a good place, Chouinard said. Aligning a good defense around our pitching where the pitchers know that things are going to get taken care of is going to put their minds at ease. The more we can get them to focus in on what they are doing, the more success we re going to have. In addition to Bittner, the Huskies add newcomers, Monica Schedule With all the openings in the line up to fill, Northern Illinois preseason schedule is as important this year as it has ever been. The Huskies will be competing in five tournaments this season, opening the season in San Marcos, Texas. Chouinard feels they are an outstanding opportunity for her to evaluate her talent, but also for the players to distinguish themselves. That s what the preseason is about for us, Chouinard said. Of course, we would love to win every game in preseason, but really it s about finding the line up that works best for everybody, that works best defensively and people are in positions in the line up where they are comfortable to perform. Everybody s going to get an opportunity. Everybody s going to get a shot. It s the people that step up and grab it and run with it that will be the ones that are going to be relaxed and slide right in when we go to conference. In the end, the conference schedule is really what matters to Chouinard and the Huskies At the end of the day, conference is a big deal, she said. We get one automatic bid from the conference tournament. The girls did a great job last year in conference. We won 12 games. That s the most we ve won, as a program, since Again, it speaks to the fact that they are understanding that it s mostly about conference. If the Huskies can navigate another challenging MAC campaign successfully, they will find themselves not only competing for a MAC championship but a bid to the NCAA Tournament. 8 Lindsay Chouinard Head Coach 3rd Season DePaul, 2003 Building a successful program is a challenge any coach relishes. It is a process that contains many steps. Developing a philosophy, finding the right personnel, getting your players to buy into that philosophy and time to pull it all together are all key components. Northern Illinois third-year head coach Lindsay Chouinard spent her first season laying the foundation for the future of Huskie softball and it paid dividends last season. Last year, Northern Illinois advanced to the semifinals of the 2009 Mid-American Conference Tournament and posted its best conference record since The Huskies success on the field did not go unnoticed as three players earned All-MAC honors in Seniors Bailey Ouellette and Emily Gooding ended their careers garnering first team honors, while freshman pitcher Morgan Bittner earned second team accolades and a spot on the MAC s All-Freshman Team. Bittner flourished under Chouinard s tutelage in her first season of collegiate softball. She led Huskies in ERA (3.26) and led the league in complete games with 29. She has already made her mark on the NIU record books as her 166 strikeouts rank fourth on the Huskies all-time list. Bittner is just one of the outstanding pitchers Chouinard has influenced. As DePaul s pitching coach from , Chouinard produced two NCAA All-America pitchers in 2007 in Tracie Adix and Becca Heteniak. Her expertise helped the Blue Demon pitching staff finish in the top 50 in team ERA every year of her tenure. Her 2007 pitching staff recorded an earned run average of 1.32 to rank sixth in the nation. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association honored the coaching staff as the Mideast Coaching Staff of the Year in 2005 and 2007 after leading DePaul to the Women s College World Series in both seasons. In 2007, the Blue Demons went and finished fifth in the country, the second-best finish in school history. As a student-athlete at DePaul, Chouinard was a four-year starting pitcher for one of the top teams in the nation. A two-year team captain, she led the Blue Demons to four Conference USA championships, four NCAA regional tournaments and a Women s College World Series appearance in The Blue Demons finished among the nation s top 20 from with Chouinard on the mound, ranking seventh, 19th, 11th and ninth. In 2003, the Blue Demon pitching staff had the third lowest ERA (0.83) in the nation and in 2002, Chouinard ranked second individually in ERA with a 0.47 mark. Chouinard, a native of Fresno, Calif., was honored nationally as a three-time NCAA All-American, two-time NCAA Regional MVP and two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American for her efforts on the field and in the classroom. She was a finalist for the National Player of the Year honor in In Conference USA, Chouinard was a fourtime first-team all-conference honoree, Player of the Year in 2003 and Pitcher of the Year in 2002 and Chouinard holds 10 of the 13 DePaul pitching records, including career marks for wins with 108 and strikeouts with 858. 9 Coaching Staff Megan Ciolli Assistant Coach 3rd Season Notre Dame, 2004 Amber Patton Assistant Coach 1st Season DePaul, 2009 During her three-year tenure at Northern Illinois University, Megan Ciolli has blossomed as a coach. She has helped develop NIU s young talent, while also refining the skills of the Huskie veterans. NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard is impressed by her knowledge of the game and her ability to pass that knowledge onto the players. Megan knows the swing in and out, Chouinard said. She is a great instructor. Over the past couple of years, she has done a great job of transitioning from being specifically an instructor to more of a coach. Chouinard credits Ciolli with the development of former NIU outfielders Jenna Roberts, who tied the NIU single season record for stolen bases in 2009, and Katie Colby, who hit her first career home runs last season. Ciolli has also had an impact on current Huskie outfielders Dani Parrish and Zoe Sinner and 2009 MAC All- Tournament team honoree Andrea Colosimo. Ciolli came to NIU after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Loyola University (Chicago) from Ciolli trained multiple All-Region players during her tenure with the Ramblers while helping transform Loyola from a middle-of-the-road conference finish in 2005 and 2006 to regular-season champions of the Horizon League in At the culmination of the 2007 season, the Rambler coaching staff was voted the Horizon League Coaching Staff of the Year. A standout collegiate player for Notre Dame, Ciolli was twice honored as team captain and was named third-team Louisville Slugger All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In 2004, Ciolli was selected as the Big East Player of the Year. In her senior season, she led the team in batting average (.386), slugging percentage (.500), on-base percentage (.424) and runs scored (40). She broke the school record for stolen bases in a single season with 32. Ciolli s offensive efforts helped the 2005 Irish to a record of overall, while their Big East mark of 16-2 won the conference regular season title. Notre Dame earned its fourth straight bid to the NCAA Tournament. While playing centerfield for the Fighting Irish, Ciolli s consistent offensive output landed her on many pages of the Irish record book. She became the sixth Notre Dame softball player to earn multiple All-America honors in a four-year career and is the all-time leader in hits (284) and stolen bases (76). Following her career at Notre Dame, Ciolli was drafted with the first pick in the second round by the NPFSL Chicago Bandits where she teamed with Chouinard to win back-to-back regular season championships in 2005 and As centerfielder for the Bandits in 2005, Ciolli had a perfect fielding percentage while starting every game. In May 2005, Ciolli received her bachelor s degree in managerial consulting from the University of Notre Dame. In May 2007, she received her master s of business administration in healthcare administration from Loyola. NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard added one of DePaul s most decorated student-athletes, when she hired Amber Patton to the Northern Illinois coaching staff this past off-season. There is no doubt in my mind that Amber is going to be a wonderful asset, mentor and coach here at NIU, Chouinard said. Her softball career is a direct reflection of her drive and work ethic. Amber understands what it takes to be successful at our level of play both offensively and defensively, and that makes her an excellent teacher of the game. A two-time Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American, Patton completed her senior season with the Blue Demons in 2009 with a school-record.497 batting average which topped the BIG EAST Conference and was second in the nation. A four-year letterwinner at third base, she holds DePaul s career records in assists (556) and sacrifice hits (58) and the single-season marks in hits (87), batting average, games started (69), games played (69) and at bats (216). Patton earned all-big EAST honors all four years, as a first team selection in 2008 and 2009 after being named to the second team in 2006 and In addition to her collegiate career, Patton has competed on the professional and international levels. The native of Forsyth, Ill. played for the Chicago Bandits this past summer and competed for USA Softball in the Japan Cup, becoming the only DePaul softball player to compete for USA Softball. The Amateur Softball Association named Patton an alternate to the 2010 USA Softball Women s National Team in January Patton also excelled in the classroom. She was a Lowe s Senior Class first team All-American, a second team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American, a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection and was named to DePaul s Dean s List and to the Athletic Director s Honor Roll in all eligible quarters. She graduated from DePaul in November 2009 with a bachelor s degree in marketing with a concentration in sales NIU Softball

Mid-American Conference The Mid-American Conference was founded as a fiveschool league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. Today the Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only, and sponsors 23 sports. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 63-year history of the league this past March. Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving for six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference. 25 Mary M. Bell Field When Northern Illinois University s softball complex began a new era as both the home of the Huskies and the IHSA Class AA Tournament in 1992, it was the perfect time to dedicate the facility in honor of the founding mother of NIU women s athletics, Dr. Mary Bell. Bell began her association with the university in 1957 as she worked to usher Northern Illinois women s athletics into the forefront. Her coaching experience ran the gamut of sports on the NIU campus. At one time or another, she coached field hockey, basketball, badminton, volleyball, swimming, and softball between 1957 and The Northern Illinois softball program s original diamond was located near the Anderson Hall physical education complex. The NIU women then moved to the former baseball field when that sport was curtailed in However, when baseball was reinstated in 1991, the softball program was able to start from scratch and build its current home. By 1993, the current raised-aluminum bleacher seating structure behind home plate was added. The 600-capacity grandstand features an enclosed press box with lights, electricity, and phone lines with radio and television capabilities. The public address system and the scoreboard computer are operated from that space and a reinforced roof serves as a camera deck as well. In addition, a media deck was added above the third-base dugout to create more space during the state tournament, and field lighting was added to allow for night games and practices. Already considered one of the best playing facilities in the Midwest, Mary M. Bell Field received an upgrade in the Fall of 2009 when the infield s calcine clay was replaced with Hilltopper, a synthetic playing surface. Hilltopper is a polymer coated dirt that does not react to water. Water literally beads up like it would on a freshly waxed car. As a result, the NIU grounds crew will not be using drying agents such as Turface, Diamond Dry or even chalk lines as drying agents would mix with the material and clump making it ineffective, saving man power and money. Mary M. Bell Field has played host to three conference tournaments. The 1994 Mid-Continent Conference Tournament was played at the facility, while the 1996 Huskies won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference title with the home field advantage. Mary M. Bell Field has been the home of two Mid-American Conference Tournaments, most recently in There isn t a bad seat in the house at Mary M. Bell Field. From a lazy fly ball to a play at the plate, the grandstands behind home plate offer fans an unencumbered view of all the action while the berm in left centerfield offers a unique vantage point to take in a game. 30 The 1988 season was a very special time in Huskie softball history. Head coach Dee Abrahamson s Huskies were ranked as high as No. 10 nationally by mid-season and between April and May, NIU embarked on a school-record 16-game winning streak. The potent Northern Illinois line-up featured a three-time, first-team All-America selection and four Academic All-America picks. The overall record represented the best team winning percentage (.761) in the program s history. By season s end, not only did NIU go 9-0 at home, but managed an impressive 10-4 ledger vs. the country s Top 20. The Huskies became the first Division I program to advance to the softball Final Eight in its initial NCAA appearance. The Huskies finished the season ranked No. 11 in the NCAA in team batting average (.302) and team earned run average (0.88) and No. 13 in team fielding (.964). The idyllic trip into the nation s Top 20 and the College World Series was fueled by a mixture of chemistry, strong talent, a balance of offense, defense and pitching, heads-up play, a strong goal-oriented focus and dedicated coaching. From the start of March, Abrahamson thought her team could be good. Northern Illinois had 13 lettterwinners back from a team that tasted some success by placing seventh at the National Invitational Championships in The club also boasted four experienced seniors: catcher Pat Faletti, first baseman Sue Kause, second baseman Laura Peterson, and shortstop Amy Veld. The Huskies finished runner-up at the Florida State Invitational, splitting with the nationally-ranked hosts. A month later, Northern Illinois won the Iowa State Cyclone Classic by beating No. 8-rated Illinois State, No. 16 Iowa State and No. 19 Nebraska. Two days later, Abrahamson s club ascended to the No. 10 spot in the NCAA Division I poll. The Huskies dominated the North Star Conference Tournament as that event turned into the Northern Illinois Invitational for more reasons than its DeKalb location. Junior pitcher Beth Schrader, who won 24 of 29 decisions and ranked among the NCAA leaders in ERA (No. 12 at 0.58) and victories (No. 15 with 24) that spring, earned the W in three straight NSC triumphs against Dayton (16-0), Valparaiso (3-1) and DePaul (8-1). Six Huskies---Jill Justin, Schrader, Faletti, Kause, Lisa Gilfoy and Julie Sexton---made the all-tourney squad. Justin and Faletti shared the NSC Most Valuable Player honors. At the NCAA Regional, Northern Illinois 1988 World Series Team beat host Bowling Green, 4-3, before losing to Illinois State by a 1-0 margin and falling into the loser s bracket in the doubleelimination format. Thanks to a triple play, Northern Illinois topped ISU in the rematch, 3-1, and then Gilfoy s home run spelled the difference in the 2-0 final in the title game. Justin, Faletti, Schrader, and Gilfoy all made the All-Midwest team. The Huskies joined the country s softball elite, No. 1-ranked UCLA, Fresno State, Texas A&M, Adelphi, Arizona, Cal Poly- Pomona, and Nebraska in Sunnyvale, Calif. Seeded No. 8, Northern Illinois was matched against eventual champion UCLA in the first round. An unearned run in the first inning proved to be the difference as the Huskies fell, 1-0. NIU s best was certainly enough to draw a compliment from UCLA head coach Sharon Backus, whose Bruin team claimed its fourth national crown in seven years. I didn t have any idea about Northern Illinois except what I read in their guide and in the papers, she said. I was quite impressed with their confidence and the way they came to play. The dream season ended two days later in a 3-0 setback to defending champion Texas A&M. The tough thing about making the (NCAA) tourney is that you either end on a loss or as a national champion, Abrahamson said. Making the tournament was a big step. The son of Tom and Katie Freidel, Christopher grew up with the Huskie softball team as his family shared living space with the NIU coaches. He was certainly the team s No. 1 fan, often attending practices and cheering on the team at nearly every home event of his tragically-shortened life. Christopher died in a car accident at age five on February 8, Although he was unable to physically follow the team he loved in its first NCAA Tournament appearance, he was definitely with the team in spirit. A message from his parents to the 1988 team read,...he didn t really understand winning and losing, but he did know about putting his whole self into something and doing the best he could to do it right. He learned that, in part, from watching you. To honor the memory of this special young fan, the players decided to make their tribute a lasting one by establishing the Christopher Thomas Freidel Memorial Award. The annual award, voted on by the seniors, is given to the Huskie player who best exemplifies the characteristics Christopher was learning. 52 Dr. John G. Peters is the 11th president of Northern Illinois University, a post he has held since June As NIU s chief executive officer, Dr. Peters provides strategic direction and oversight for a nationallyrecognized, comprehensive university serving more than 25,000 students in 120 areas of study at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Under his leadership, NIU has both expanded and refined its institutional vision to more closely align teaching, research and outreach efforts with emerging needs of the northern Illinois / Chicagoland region. A native of Strongsville, Ohio, Dr. Peters earned his bachelor s degree in political science at Cleveland s John Carroll University, and a master s in government from Ohio University in Athens. In 1974, he received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to assuming the NIU presidency, Dr. Peters was provost and chief operating officer at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. His distinguished academic career also includes 20 years in teaching and administrative roles at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned numerous awards for work in and out of the classroom. Dr. Peters presidency at NIU has been marked by substantial increases in the university s reputation and the discovery of new sources of funding. In his first year as president, he gained admission for Northern Illinois University to the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), an honor reserved for the top five percent of universities nationwide. That same year, Dr. Peters secured NIU s largest-ever private gift: $20 million for a new College of Business building. Since that time, President Peters has led efforts to expand federal funding of select NIU research programs a campaign that has garnered more than $60 million, strengthened key partnerships with state and federal research programs, and enhanced NIU s standing in the prestigious Carnegie Foundation rankings of research institutions. NIU s longstanding commitment to regional service has also received new attention and support under Dr. Peters leadership. His vision of NIU as the nation s premier regional public university has been the basis for substantial enhancement of regional partnerships with schools, businesses, health care and local governmental agencies. In 2005, Dr. Peters established an ambitious five-year plan that leverages historic NIU strengths by connecting regional engagement and applied research to the university s well-known focus on realworld learning experiences. Fortified by that plan and more than $100 million in NIU President Dr. John G. Peters The school year is the 10th for Dr. John G. Peters as president of Northen Illinois University. Dr. Peters is a fixture on NIU sidelines during Huskie football games. private donations, NIU launched its first-ever comprehensive capital campaign and began a campus-wide strategic planning process to focus university resources and efforts in the years ahead. Among its more ambitious components is creation of a proton therapy cancer treatment and research center that integrates NIU s respected physics program with cutting-edge nuclear medicine. Dr. Peters reputation as a consensus-builder and education policy expert puts him in demand for leadership roles in statewide and national organizations. He currently serves on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and is a member of the Mid-American Conference s executive committee. His leadership in the area of intercollegiate athletics also includes membership on the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee representing the coalition conferences. Dr. Peters served as Illinois representative to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). He is a member of the U.S. Abraham Lincoln Commission on International Education; NASULGC s Commission on Women in Higher Education; and is co-chair of Illinois Center for Child Welfare and Education. In 2004, the U.S. Department of Education named Dr. Peters to a special task force studying math and science education, providing a national perspective for his ongoing work with education and economic development groups throughout the Midwest. A political scientist by training, Dr. Peters specializes in studies of public policy and Congress. He has published widely, including articles in the Journal of Policy Studies, American Politics Quarterly, American Political Science Review, and Legislative Studies Quarterly, and has coedited two books on American politics. He is a Fellow of the Center for Great Plains Studies and has served as the associate editor of the Great Plains Quarterly. V.P./Director of Athletics Jeff Compher Since taking over as associate vice president and director of athletics at Northern Illinois University on June 1, 2008, Jeff Compher has made strategic decisions to keep the athletics program moving forward while planning for the future and engaging with Huskie student-athletes. U.S. News & World Report ranks the NIU Master s in Public Administration (MPA) program in the top 10 nationally in the field of city management and for public finance. About one-third of Illinois city managers are graduates of the NIU MPA program, a major force behind efforts to professionalize municipal staffs in Illinois and advance the national good government movement. 56 The Jeffrey & Kimberly Yordon Center is a state-of-theart facility in every way. From the Midwest Orthopaedic Training Room to the Chet and Teresa Young Equipment Room, the strength & conditioning center to the Frances and George Wilkins Academic Support Center, every Huskie student-athlete is provided with the resources necessary to excel in the classroom and in competition. While all 450 NIU student-athletes utilize the Yordon Center throughout the year, the facility is the full-time home of the Huskie football program, with locker rooms for players and coaches, meeting rooms, a spacious football equipment room and office space. The heart of the 62,000-square foot Yordon Center, the Frances and George Wilkins Academic Support Center (honoring Carole & Joe Novak), features one-on-one tutorial rooms, a group study room and a fully-equipped computer lab, as well as offices for the counselors of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) unit. This area brings the staff of SAASS into more direct daily contact with NIU s student-athletes and is a constant hub of activity in the building. The 12,500-square foot strength & conditioning center allows NIU s professional sports performance coaches to avoid scheduling conflicts between teams while allowing space for warm-ups, plyometric exercises and speed and agility activities. The spacious area features brand new equipment with a variety and multitude of machines, as well as a three-lane sprint track. All Huskie student-athletes benefit from the spacious and technologically-advanced facilities used by NIU s professional athletic training staff and team doctors to prevent, treat and rehabilitate injuries in the Yordon Center. Doctors and trainers have been provided with all the tools they need, as the Yordon Center s state-of-the-art health center features an X-ray room, doctor s office, two rehabilitation pools, a drug testing area and offices for staff. The spacious computer lab (left) provides all Huskie student-athletes with a comfortable learning environment in which to further their academic pursuits.

57 The Huskie Indoor Training (H.I.T) Center is the newest athletic training facility to open on Northern Illinois University s campus. Joining the Jeffrey and Kimberly Yordon Center, which opened in August of 2007, the H.I.T. Center serves as the indoor practice home for NIU s baseball, men s and women s golf and softball programs which opened November 1, Located southwest of the Convocation Center in what was formerly known as the John Deere Building, the H.I.T. Center provides student-athletes a place to develop their skills during the winter months. The H.I.T. Center measures 9,800 square feet and features an Astroturf carpet floor and sport specific lighting. Space is divided equally for baseball/softball and golf. Retractable netting allows for the redistribution of practice space. Four full-size batting cages are located on the baseball/ softball side of the facility, while the golf side features space for six practice tees surrounded by netting. A putting green has also been installed. Prior to the opening of the H.I.T. Center, NIU s spring sport studentathletes used space in the Rec Center or on the east side of Huskie Stadium. Now they have a place of their own to call home. Executive Vice President Eddie Williams spoke to a group of student-athletes and coaches at the opening of NIU s most recent athletic training facility. Several student-athletes expressed their gratitude for the H.I.T. Center at its opening including former softball player Krista McPherson. The H.I.T. Center provides NIU coaches and student-athletes with a spacious, comfortable, on-campus facility for one-on-one instruction or team practices.

58 When a Northern Illinois University student-athlete steps onto campus in DeKalb, Illinois, they are stepping onto the national stage. Located just 65 miles west of downtown Chicago, the nation s third-largest media market, Huskie student-athletes are a part of one of this country s great sports towns. During the season, the NIU football team took on Iowa at Soldier Field in the fall, while the baseball team faced Notre Dame at U.S. Cellular Field in the spring. In 2011, the Huskies will return to Soldier Field to play Wisconsin. DeKalb s proximity to Chicago also affords local citizens, including NIU students, the opportunity to experience all that the city has to offer, from cultural events and festivals, to restaurants and theatres. Three airports O Hare, Midway and Rockford are within an hour s drive of NIU. While it is close to the Windy City and the city s ever-expanding western suburbs, DeKalb maintains a unique character and offers a quality existence to its nearly 45,000 residents. DeKalb is successfully combining the old and the new as brick-paved streets and historic homes co-exist with a growing business sector and brand new residential and commercial developments. In addition to many activities, including Huskie athletics, available on campus, DeKalb is famous for its annual CornFest, welcoming students back to town in late August. Soldier Field (right), the home of the Chicago Bears, is the Huskies home away from home. NIU opened the 2007 season there against Iowa and will play Wisconsin in 2011 at the site.
