2 GAME NOTES FSU WINS SERIES AT NORTH CAROLINA Florida State (20-5) is coming off a series win at North Carolina. The Seminoles allowed a pair of big innings in the opener Friday (L, 16-8), giving up five runs in the first inning and seven in the seventh inning. The Tar Heels combined to score just seven runs in the final two games of the series. FSU beat UNC 6-3 in 10 innings in the second game Friday, the Noles first extra-innings game this year. FSU beat North Carolina 9-4 Sunday to win the series. Cal Raleigh, Nick Derr and Jackson Lueck combined for 8 RBI on three HR, including Derr s grand slam, the first of the year for FSU. Freshman CJ Van Eyk pitched 4.2 innings and allowed just two hits and no runs for his first collegiate win. LUECK LOOKS TO JOIN ELITE COMPANY Junior outfielder Jackson Lueck has led the Seminoles in batting average each of his first two seasons, hitting.379 in 2016 and.318 in Lueck is attempting to become just the third Seminole to win three-consecutive team batting titles, following Doug Mientkiewicz ( ) and DJ Stewart ( ). Lueck hit.368 with three home runs and 10 RBI last week against UCF and North Carolina to earn his first career ACC Player of the Week honor. The Orlando native co-leads FSU (with Nick Derr) with five home runs on the season. After an 0-for-18 stretch, Lueck hit in the 7-hole for just the second time in his career against Notre Dame. He had a pair of hits that day before hitting a home run against UCF and two at North Carolina. Lueck has a hit in six straight games. FSU GETS FIRST RANKED WINS FSU is 2-1 this year against Top 25 opponents (USA Today poll) after sweeping UCF in mid-week action. North Carolina was ranked No. 27 when FSU took two-of-three last weekend, but the Tar Heels had an RPI ranking of six. The Knights entered the series winners of 16 of 17, but Andrew Karp struck out 10 batters without allowing a walk in FSU s 6-4 win. It was Karp s fourth win of the season, doubling his win total from a year ago. On Wednesday, the Noles scored 13 runs, the most this season. Mendoza had a nine-game stretch with an extra-base hit and has added five sacrifice flies on the season. Mendoza has both of FSU s walk-off hits this season, singles against Troy and UNC Asheville on consecutive Saturdays. Mendoza is playing third base this season and playing 40 of 43 games at first base in He has made 68 consecutive starts. Mendoza hit his first home run of the season two weeks ago at Florida. POWER BATS SHOW UP FSU has 24 home runs this season, with 17 coming in the past nine games. The Noles hit a season high four home runs at No. 2 Florida on March 13. Nick Derr and Jackson Lueck have combined for 10 home runs (five each). Lueck hit three in the past week and Derr had a pair. The two went back-to-back in the eighth inning Sunday at UNC to break a 4-4 tie en route to FSU s 9-4 win. Before the current power barrage, FSU had just seven home runs in the first 16 games of the year. Last season, FSU did not have a four-home run game until the Super Regional final against Sam Houston State. KARP DOMINATES AT JACKSONVILLE Junior pitcher Andrew Karp was lights out at Jacksonville, allowing four hits and no walks and striking out a career-high 12 batters in FSU s 4-0 win. 3 FSU vs OPPONENTS GAME NOTES Opponent All-time Martin KARP HITS DOUBLE-DIGIT K s AGAIN Andrew Karp has a pair of double-digit strikeout games this season without allowing a walk. Against the Dolphins, Karp struck out a career-high 12 in six innings. Against UCF, Karp struck out 10 in a career-high 7.1 innings pitched. As a team, FSU struck out 13 Knights that game without allowing a walk. Last season, Karp struck out 11 Florida batters without allowing a walk. In total, in all three of Karp s career games with 10 or more strikeouts, he has not allowed a walk. He was one of four Seminoles to have a 10+ strikeout game last year (Tyler Holton-6, Drew Parrish, Will Zirzow, Karp). He has both such games this year. 10+ Strikeouts, 2018: Date Pitcher K s Opponent 2/27/18 Andrew Karp 12 at Jacksonville 3/20/18 Andrew Karp 10 UCF NOLES PUT TOGETHER GOOD AT-BATS As a team, FSU struck out just eight times in the three-game series against Notre Dame, including just once on Friday night. It was the first time since April 1, 2016 that FSU batters recorded just one strikeout against an ACC opponent (Boston College). The eight strikeouts in the series were FSU s fewest since tallying seven strikeouts in three games against Villanova March 1-3, Mike Salvatore is the 8th-toughest player to strike out in Division I and toughest in the ACC. He has not struck out in 34 at-bats in nine ACC games this season. Salvatore set career highs with three hits and two RBI in FSU s 6-3, 10-inning win at UNC. His two-run double in the 10th inning provided the winning runs. NOLES HOT START FSU s 14-0 record to start the season was the fourth-best in school history, trailing only opening stretches in 1975, 2007 and FSU s 14-game winning streak was the longest at any point in the season since the 16-0 start in Longest Wins Streak to Open Season RALEIGH DURABLE BEHIND THE PLATE Catcher Cal Raleigh has started 149 consecutive games, with 146 of those coming at catcher. Raleigh started all 69 games behind the plate in The streak ran up to 129 before starting the third game of the UNC Asheville series this year as the designated hitter. He was also the DH in the last game at Wake Forest. Offensively, Raleigh hit.500 over the past five games and reached base in all five plate appearances Sunday (3-for-3, 3-R HR, 2 BB). Raleigh ranks second on the team with a.333 average and 22 RBI (both trailing Drew Mendoza). He has struck out just 14 times while drawing 23 walks. APLIN GETTING HOT Senior first baseman Rhett Aplin is hitting.333 in ACC play to open the season with four doubles. Aplin hit his first two home runs of the season at Florida, the first multi-hr game of his career and first for a Seminole this season. Aplin homered in his first two ABs at UF, the first player since Drew Mendoza in the ACC Championship Game in 2017 to hit home runs in consecutive at-bats. Aplin hit a pair of doubles against UCF (3/21), the third time in his career with two doubles in a game.
