2 GAME NOTES FSU HOSTS MIAMI No. 14 Florida State (29-13) hosts Miami (17-23) for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles have beaten the Hurricanes 150 times, its most wins against any opponent. Head coach Mike Martin has been at the helm of 97 of those victories, his most against any team. Martin is three wins shy of becoming the winningest coach in college baseball history. The Seminoles and Hurricanes split a pair of games in Coral Gables in 2017 before Sunday s game was rained out. The Noles had the best offensive game of the season in game two vs. Stetson (4/18), hitting 7 HR, the most in a game since 2009 (7 at Miami). Junior catcher Cal Raleigh hit two home runs, his first career multi-hr game. FSU s 13-7 win (4/21) was played at Fenway Park as part of the Eagles annual ALS Awareness Game. The 5,433 attendance was the most in the seven-year history of the event. FSU has swept an ACC opponent every season since joining the league in WELLS EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS Right fielder Steven Wells had a week for the ages, hitting 14-for-17 (.824) with two home runs, two doubles, six walks, seven RBI, 11 runs scored and a slugging percentage in FSU s five wins against Stetson (4/17-18) and Boston College (4/20-22). Wells opened the week reaching base via hit, walk or error on his first 20 plate appearances. Wells reached base safely (not via error) on 13 consecutive plate appearances, one shy of Taylor Walls school record. Wells was 12-for-12 before reaching on an error at Fenway Park, breaking Brian Cox s 10-for- 10 run in the 1998 Regionals for most hits in consecutive at-bats in FSU history. Wells set a career high with four hits against Stetson (4/18) and tied that against Boston College at Fenway Park (4/21). Wells scored four runs, also a career high, against the Eagles. In addition to All-ACC honors, Wells was also a player of the week by Collegiate Baseball and the National Hitter of the Week by the NCBWA. COBI OHTANI JOHNSON Cobi Johnson, a pitcher who has 26 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched this season, had one career at-bat before game two against Stetson (4/18). Since then, Johnson has a three-run home run against the Hatters and a three-rbi game at Fenway Park as the starting designated hitter. Johnson is 3-for-10 with a single, triple, and home run. He has seven RBI. Against Boston College at Fenway Park (4/21), Johnson hit a two-run triple to right field and pitched the final three innings for his first career save. NOLES WIN BACK-TO-BACK DBL-DIGIT GMS For the first time since 2011 against Virginia Tech (15-11 & 18-12), FSU won consecutive games when allowing 10+ runs. FSU beat Stetson (4/18, 18-10) and BC (4/20, 13-12). 3 FSU vs OPPONENTS GAME NOTES Opponent All-time Martin POWER BATS SHOW UP FSU has 44 home runs this season, with 37 coming in the past 26 games. FSU tied the school record with seven home runs against Stetson (4/18). The Noles also hit four home runs at Florida (3/13) and have six games with at least three home runs this year. Last season, FSU did not have a four-home run game until the Super Regional final against Sam Houston State. Jackson Lueck hit his career-high 10th at Boston College (4/20). Lueck hit four as a freshman and nine last season. His 23 career home runs are second on the team (Cal Raleigh, 25). KARP MOVES TO WEEKEND Junior pitcher Andrew Karp leads the ACC with 7 wins, including two in one week against Stetson (4/17) and Boston College (4/22). On a pitch count against the Hatters, Karp allowed just one hit in five innings of FSU s 4-0 win. It was his third game this season, and sixth of his career, with at least eight strikeouts without allowing a walk. Karp made his first weekend start of the season against the Eagles, allowing just one run in six innings and notching seven more strikeouts. Karp has both of FSU s double-digit strikeout games this season and the Noles lone complete game (vs. Florida, 3/27). Karp and Jonah Scolaro combined for 16 strikeouts without a walk at JU (2/27), a feat FSU has accomplished just five times in school history. FSU vs. GT NOTES Cal Raleigh stole his first base of the season and third of his career (4/8). Cooper Swanson made his first career start in RF (4/7). He recorded his first outfield assist, and FSU s fifth of the season, in the fifth inning. Rhett Aplin and Steven Wells tripled Saturday (4/7), the first time since May 21, 2016, that FSU had two triples in one game. Entering the game, FSU had two triples on the season. FSU s win Friday (4/6) was the sixth straight against GT, tied for the longest FSU win streak in the series ( & ). SANDS HEATING UP Junior Cole Sands is 6-2 on the season, tied for the ACC lead in wins. He has thrown a career-high 7.0 innings in two of his last three appearances. Against Ga. Tech (4/6), Sands allowed a run in the first and eighth innings with nothing in between, leading FSU to a 10-2 victory. Sands has allowed 13 runs in the first inning (9.0 IP). He has given up just 14 runs after the first inning (41.2 IP). Entering 2018, Sands previous career high was 6.2 innings pitched against Duke in the 2017 ACC Tournament. NOLES TOP JU FOR SECOND TIME RHP Andrew Karp and Florida State beat Jacksonville for the second time this season, beating the Dolphins 6-2 in Tally (4/4). Karp pitched 7.0 innings, the third straight game and sixth time in his career he has gone at least 7.0 innings. FOSTER WALK-OFF LEADS FSU TO SERIES WIN Junior catcher Jonathan Foster hit a two-run, pinch-hit walk-off home run to beat No. 18 Louisville, 8-7 (3/30). Foster s home run was FSU s first walk-off HR when LOSING a game since Mike McGee s tworun HR gave FSU a 7-6 win over Miami in 2010 (have had five walk-off home runs in tie games in that span). Both of Foster s home runs this season have come as a pinch hitter - his first was in his first career AB as a Seminole, a three-run HR against Troy (2/23). LUECK LOOKS TO JOIN ELITE COMPANY Junior outfielder Jackson Lueck has led the Seminoles in batting average each of his first two seasons, hitting.379 in 2016 and.318 in Lueck is attempting to become just the third Seminole to win three-consecutive team batting titles, following Doug Mientkiewicz ( ) and DJ Stewart ( ). Lueck hit.368 with three home runs and 10 RBI against UCF and North Carolina to earn his first career ACC Player of the Week honor. Lueck hit FSU s only home run in three games at Boston College, a two-run home run in the series opener (4/20). Lueck had a season-high four RBI in the game. At Fenway Park (4/21), Lueck just missed a home run over the Green Monster, settling instead for a double. FSU WINS SERIES AT NORTH CAROLINA Florida State allowed a pair of big innings in the opener at North Carolina (3/23), giving up five runs in the first inning and seven in the seventh inning. The Tar Heels combined to score just seven runs in the final two games of the series. FSU beat UNC 6-3 in 10 innings in the second game, the Noles first extra-innings game this year. FSU beat North Carolina 9-4 to win the series (3/25). Cal Raleigh, Nick Derr and Jackson Lueck combined for 8 RBI on three HR, including Derr s grand slam, the first of the year for FSU. Freshman CJ Van Eyk pitched 4.2 innings and allowed just two hits and no runs for his first collegiate win. VAN EYK COMING ON STRONG Freshman pitcher CJ Van Eyk threw a career-high innings in consecutive appearances at North Carolina (3/25) and 6.0 vs. Louisville (3/31). Van Eyk allowed just two hits in each of those games. He was the winning pitcher against UNC, holding the Tar Heels scoreless while striking out 5 in FSU s 9-4 win. He allowed a run against UofL in his first inning but retired 11 straight between the fourth and eighth innings. 4 GAME NOTES SALVATORE RISING FAST Shortstop Mike Salvatore hit 7-for-13 in three games at Georgia Tech. He tied a career high with three hits in each of the final two games against the Yellow Jackets. Salvatore is the 22nd toughest player to strikeout, doing so just once every 13.7 at-bats. NOLES PUT TOGETHER GOOD AT-BATS As a team, FSU struck out just eight times in the three-game series against Notre Dame, including just once in game one (3/16). It was the first time since April 1, 2016 that FSU batters recorded just one strikeout against an ACC opponent (Boston College). The eight strikeouts in the series were FSU s fewest since tallying seven strikeouts in three games against Villanova March 1-3, NOLES HOT START FSU s 14-0 record to start the season was the fourth-best in school history, trailing only opening stretches in 1975, 2007 and FSU s 14-game winning streak was the longest at any point in the season since the 16-0 start in Longest Wins Streak to Open Season RALEIGH DURABLE BEHIND THE PLATE Catcher Cal Raleigh has started 166 consecutive games, with 163 of those coming at catcher. Raleigh started all 69 games behind the plate in APLIN GETTING HOT Senior first baseman Rhett Aplin is hitting.346 in ACC play to open the season with six doubles, a triple and 11 RBI. He had six hits at Georgia Tech. His.346 average in conference play is nearly 70 points higher than FSU s next best hitter (Steven Wells,.279). Aplin hit his first two home runs of the season at Florida, the first multi-hr game of his career and first for a Seminole this season. Aplin homered in his first two ABs at UF, the first player since Drew Mendoza in the ACC Championship Game in 2017 to hit home runs in consecutive at-bats. Aplin hit a pair of doubles against UCF (3/21) and Boston College (4/20). He has now had two doubles in a game four times in his career. Aplin and catcher Cal Raleigh are tied for the team lead with 39 walks. That ranks 10th nationally and third in the ACC. FIRST STARTS ON THE MOUND Sophomore Clayton Kwiatkowski and freshman CJ Van Eyk made the first starts of their career this season. Starting pitcher Cole Sands missed his scheduled start at Boston College and will not start against the Hurricanes this weekend. He left the Duke game with biceps tendonitis but is available out of the bullpen against the Hurricanes. MENDOZA BACK AT THIRD Sophomore Drew Mendoza leads FSU with a.320 batting average and 49 hits. He went 5-for-6 against Stetson (4/18) to snap a 4-for-48 skid over his previous 13 games. Mendoza had at least one extra base hit in nine consecutive games, the longest streak in the country this season. Mendoza s 16-game hitting streak is the longest for a Seminole this year.
