2 NOLES FACE UNDEFEATED WOLFPACK No. 6 Florida State (-2) faces No. 2 NC State (7-0) for a three-game ACC series in Raleigh. The Seminoles won of 4 against the Wolfpack in 208, including back-to-back walk-off wins in the regular season and a 5-2 win in the ACC Tournament. In 207, NC State won 2 of in Raleigh the last time FSU visited Doak Field. FLOWERS HOMERS & EARNS SAVE vs. VT Junior J.C. Flowers, who has started 5 games in centerfield at FSU, made his first appearance on the mound against Maine (2/7). He picked up his first career save against Youngstown State (2/22) and also pitched a perfect ninth inning against Mercer (/). Against Virginia Tech, Flowers notched his third career walk-off win on a three-run double with FSU trailing 8-6 in the 0th inning. In Saturday s win vs. VT, Mike Martin s 2,000th of his career, Flowers earned a two-inning save and hit a home run. The last player to hit a home run and save a game for Florida State was Mike McGee against Florida in the 200 World Series. McGee was named that season s John Olerud Award winner as the nation s best two-way player. Flowers hit his third HR of 209 at Florida, his first career grand slam. COOP THERE IT IS Sophomore first baseman Cooper Swanson has five home runs, tied for the team high. Against Mercer, Swanson hit three home runs (one in each game) and tallied six RBI. The Fort Myers native hit a pinch-hit HR against the Bears Friday, broke a - tie with a three-run homer on Saturday and extended FSU s lead with a HR Sunday. Swanson hit first-inning home runs in both of FSU s wins against Virginia Tech. MENDOZA SHINES VS. BEARS Junior captain Drew Mendoza hit three home runs against Mercer, including two in Sunday s series finale, and is tied for the FSU lead with five on the season. Mendoza tied FSU s game vs. VT (/8) with a two-run double off the CF wall (FSU won in 0th). He had FSU s only hit against VT in game 2 (/9) and broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the 7th inning against the Hokies (/9). Martin hit his first collegiate home run against the Penguins (2/2). He was a combined 7-for-8 with 8 RBI in the doubleheader. Martin was named the ACC Player of the Week (2/25) for his efforts. He is the first FSU freshman since DJ Stewart in 20 to earn Player of the Week honors. FSU s 24 runs against Youngstown State (24-2 win, 2/2) were the most for FSU since also scoring 24 against USF in 205. NOLES NO-HIT MAINE IN SEASON OPENER Three Florida State pitchers combined to throw Florida State s 0th no-hitter in program history against Maine (2/5). FSU beat the Black Bears -0. Drew Parrish (-0) went 5.0 innings and allowed one walk and struck out 5; Conor Grady threw a career-high.0 innings and struck out 4; and junior Chase Haney, making his first appearance since 207 after Tommy John surgery, pitched a scoreless ninth inning. The no-hitter was FSU s first since 206 and fourth under head coach Mike Martin (solo nono s in 988 and 998). It was FSU s 7th shutout in a season opener and the first since a 2-0 win over VMI in 20. It is the second known no-hitter on Opening Day - Davidson s Wes Self tossed one in 200. FRESHMEN STAND OUT FOR NOLES Robby Martin leads FSU with a.79 batting average, but Nander De Sedas (.295) and Elijah Cabell (.95) are also hitting the ball well. Those three freshmen all homered in FSU s 24-2 rout of Youngstown State (2/2). FSU s fourth freshman starter, Mat Nelson, hit his first collegiate home run in the second game of the Youngstown State doubleheader. Martin had 6 RBI against Youngstown State, all in the first three innings. It was FSU s first 6-RBI game since Drew Mendoza did it in 207 and the most in the ACC this season. Martin s 5 RBI against Maine (2/5) were the most for a Seminole freshman in a season opener. His five RBI were the most on Opening Day for any Nole since junior Gage West had five in 206. NEWCOMERS PRODUCE AT PLATE AND MOUND Twelve total players made their FSU debuts in the season-opening series against Maine. Carter Smith (B/DH) and Nico Baldor (B) started for the Noles. Alec Sanchez and Tim Becker made plate appearances, and McGuire Weaver saw time at second base and as a pinch runner. On the mound, FSU s newcomers combined to throw 7.0 innings, allowing a run on four hits and striking out five. 209 FSU Baseball Media Policies Coach Martin and players will be available postgame for a press conference in the Tradition Room. He went 5- in 208 with a 2.52 earned run average and 28 strikeouts over 07 innings pitched. Mendoza is FSU s leading returning slugger, with 7 home runs over his first two seasons. Mendo hit. in 208 with seven home runs and 44 runs batted in. Mendoza and Parrish were two of four Seminoles named to the All-ACC team after helping lead the Noles to a second-straight ACC Championship. Parrish tied the FSU ACC Tournament record with 4 strikeouts against NC State. Mendoza had the game-winning, two-run double in the 0th inning in the title game against Louisville. VAN EYK READY FOR MORE IN YEAR 2 Sophomore CJ Van Eyk finished 208 with a perfect 7-0 record and a 2.89 earned run average on his way to freshman All-America honors. Van Eyk allowed just one run in a career-high 7. innings against Miami (4/28), striking out a career-high 0 hitters. He earned his second career win in FSU s 0- win. Van Eyk is - in 209, with his first career loss coming against Virginia Tech (/9). Van Eyk had eight K s and no walks against Mercer, the first such game of his career. VELEZ WINS FIRST TWO APPEARANCES Junior college transfer Antonio Velez won his first two appearances as a Seminole, throwing 4.0 innings in wins against Maine and Youngstown State. Velez tallied a 0.90 ERA over his first 0.0 innings out of the bullpen. FOSTER WALK-OFF LEADS FSU TO SERIES WIN Catcher Jonathan Foster is one of just four seniors on the 209 team. In limited action last season behind All-American catcher Cal Raleigh, who was drafted in the third round of the MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners, Foster hit.24 with two home runs. None of Foster s hits were bigger than his pinchhit, two-run walk-off home run against Louisville on March 0. Foster s home run was FSU s first walk-off HR when TRAILING a game since Mike McGee s two-run HR gave FSU a 7-6 win over Miami in 200 (had five walk-off home runs in tie games in that span). Both of Foster s home runs in 208 came as a pinch hitter - his first was in his first career AB as a Seminole, a three-run HR against Troy (2/2). Foster hit his first home run of 209 against Virginia Tech (/8). STADIUM IMPROVEMENTS Over the past two seasons, Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium has seen two important renovations. Prior to the 208 season, a new video board was unveiled. At the time, it was the second largest in college baseball. Prior to the 209 season, the weight room under the grandstands was renovated with state-ofthe-art equipment and over,800 square feet of workout space. PLATE DISCIPLINE & EFFICIENCY For the seventh time in the past nine seasons, Florida State again led the country in walks drawn by a sizeable margin in 208. Led Florida State to an unprecedented 2 consecutive 50- plus win seasons from Led Florida State to the NCAA Tournament and at least 40 wins in all 9 seasons as head coach.
