Hill is the fi rst major league pitcher since 1900 to make a season debut in September or later and have 10-strikeout starts in his first 3 games of that season. Hill is the only pitcher in the last 100 years with at least 10 SO in each of his fi rst 3 starts for any single AL team...elias says Hill is the 1st pitcher since 1900 to strike out at least 10 in his fi rst 3 starts immediately following a gap of 5+ years since his previous start. Hill is the fi rst ever Red Sox pitcher to record 10 SO in his fi rst 3 starts for the team...he is the only Sox pitcher in the last 100 years to have 3 consecutive starts at any point of at least 7.0 innings with 10+ strikeouts in each and 1 or 0 walks in each. STARTING DEBUT: Today Craig Breslow, who turned 35 years old in August, will make the fi rst start in 523 career major league games...he will be the fi rst pitcher to make his fi rst start that late in a career by games played since Troy Percival in his 639th career game on 9/30/07 with St. Louis, and the fi rst left-hander to do it since Chuck McElroy in his 604th career game on 9/20/2000 with Baltimore. According to Elias, he will pass Scott Atchison as the oldest ever Red Sox pitcher at the time of his fi rst career major league start...atchison did it at 34 years, 75 days old on 6/12/2010 vs. PHI. Elias also says Breslow will be the oldest pitcher to make his fi rst major league start at age 35 or older and do it for an AL team since Danny Boone at 36 years old for the Orioles on 9/30/90. LEFTY RECORD: Today Craig Breslow will become the 6th different left-handed pitcher to start for the Red Sox this year, along with Rich Hill, Brian Johnson, Wade Miley, Henry Owens, and Eduardo Rodriguez. This is just the 2nd time Boston has featured as many as 6 different left-handed starters in a single season... They also had 7 lefties start in 1934 (Lefty Grove, George Hockette, Spike Merena, Fritz Ostermueller, Herb Pennock, Rube Walberg, and Bob Weiland). BATTLING BIRDS: Tonight the Red Sox and Orioles continue their 19-game season series, which Boston trails 6-games-to-11 despite being outscored in those 17 games by just 3 runs (76-79)...Boston is 4-4 against the Birds at Fenway this year, winning 3 of their last 5 matchups here.
