THIRD, FOURTH OR FIFTH? The Rays, Orioles and Red Sox all have matching records, which means the Rays could finish anywhere from third to fifth place in the AL East according to the Elias Sports Bureau, no three teams from the same division have finished with identical records in the divisional era (since 1969) from , Tampa Bay finished last in nine of 10 seasons, but they haven t finished last since becoming the Rays in 2008 in fact they ve finished 3rd or better in six of those seven seasons. This year s AL East will be only the third division to have all its teams finish with 78 or more wins since the current divisional format began in 1994 also the 2005 NL East (all five teams with 81 or more wins) and 2006 AL West (all four teams with 78 or more wins). TUNE-UP AT THE TROP This will be the eighth time in 18 years the Rays have finished the regular season against a team that was playoff-bound and all eight opponents already clinched a postseason berth the Rays have won the last five such series (see below) all but one of these series (1998 at NYY) was played at Tropicana Field four of the seven past opponents advanced to the World Series, and three won it all. A DIFFERENT LEAGUE, ALL RIGHT The Rays yielded only 6 extra-base hits (all doubles) in their 3-game sweep of the Marlins, holding the Fish to a.224/.280/.286 line by comparison, in getting swept last weekend in Toronto, they yielded 20 XBH (11-2B, 1-3B, 8-HR), their 2nd most ever in a 3-game series (21, April 7-9, 2000 vs. CLE) Toronto hit.317/.402/.683 (32-for-101). EVERYONE S A HITTER The Rays offense recorded 16 hits last night, their 2nd-highest tally this season and most at Tropicana Field since Aug 2, 2014 vs. LAA it was only the second time in club history they recorded 4 runs or fewer on 16-plus hits also May 30, 2002 vs. OAK (19 hits in a 4-3, 13-inning win) the Elias Sports Bureau notes that last night was the fourth game in Rays history in which the top six hitters of the starting lineup recorded multiple hits in a 9-inning game: also July 6, 2007 at KC, June 24, 2004 at TOR and July 8, 2003 at OAK all told, seven Rays had multi-hit games last night, tying the season high (May 17 at MIN). Rays are batting.276 since Aug 1 (2nd in MLB to Boston-.287) to raise their season avg. from.239 (28th in majors thru end of July) to.252. First 100 Games (thru July 26): The Rays recorded double-digit hits 25 times, and scored 5-plus runs 30 times. Last 59 Games (since July 27): The Rays have recorded doubledigit hits 32 times, and scored 5-plus runs 27 times. DIVISION OF POWER The Rays have a club-record 14 players with at least 5 HR this season, tied with Cleveland for most in the majors and one shy of the major league record (2013 Cubs, 2012 Astros, 2007 Rangers, 2002 A s) the Rays have three more players sitting at 4 HR apiece: DH John Jaso, 1B James Loney and INF Richie Shaffer. The Rays have 22 HR from the No. 9 spot in the batting order, which leads the majors and is most of any team since the 2005 Indians tied the major league record of 24 (also 2003 Red Sox and 1987 Orioles) the 22 HR are the Rays 2nd most of any batting order position this year they have 25 HR from the No. 6 spot. The Rays have 20 HR from their catchers, tying the club record (1999). The Rays haven t had a grand slam in their last 227 games, since Kevin Kiermaier on July 9, 2014 at KC off Yordano Ventura the Rays are in danger of their first season ever without a grand slam, and are one of two teams (Rangers) without one this year. 60 SAVES TIE 1991 BLUE JAYS Last night the Rays converted their 60th save of the season, tied for 7th most in major league history and tying the 1991 Blue Jays for most ever by an AL East club prior to the Rays, the most saves ever recorded by a team without a winning record was 54 by the 2014 Braves the Rays have earned a save in 60 of their 78 victories (76.9 pct.), compared to 52.3 pct. by the rest of MLB this is currently the highest mark in major league history, topping the inaugural 1993 Marlins (48 of 64, 75.0 pct.). The Rays have used 8 different pitchers to earn a save, tied with Toronto, Arizona and Colorado for most in the majors, and one shy of the club record Brad Boxberger will be the Rays 10th different saves leader in 11 years. BRAD BOXBERGER Last night took over the AL lead with his 41st save, passing LAA Huston Street, who s been sidelined with a groin strain Box looks to join Rafael Soriano (45 in 2010) as the only Rays pitchers to lead the league in saves he saved all 3 games vs. Miami, and has saved the Rays last 6 victories he is second pitcher in ML history to record 40 saves and 10 losses in a season, joining COL Jose Jimenez (41-SV, 10-L) in OUTLAW IN SEARCH OF GOLD Last night CF Kevin Kiermaier threw out the tying run (J.T.
