USC is coming off an emotional victory on Tuesday over No. 3 Cal State Fullerton, 6-1. In a true team effort, three Trojan pitchers, Brent Wheatley, Sean Adler and James Guillen held the typically potent Titan offense to just four hits. The Trojans offense combined for six runs on nine hits, behind a 3-for-4 day for sophomore Vahn Bozoian, who also launched his second home run in as many games, this time a solo shot to left field. Arkansas Dedeaux Field You knew there had to be something special about Dedeaux Field from the day it first opened its gates on March 30, Righthander Russ McQueen threw a no-hitter that afternoon in the first game ever played at Dedeaux Field as USC swept a doubleheader from California. The Trojans went on to win the national championship that year and Dedeaux Field has been their home ever since. The 2014 season marks the 40th season of play at Dedeaux Field. One of the country s finest collegiate baseball structures, Dedeaux Field has continually been improved over recent years with the grandest project taking place before the 2002 season. A $4 million project signified the largest improvement made to the facility as a new clubhouse and players lounge were added on the first base side. Expanded offices for the coaching staff and new Hall of Fame were also part of the project, along with a new restroom pavilion. A new bleacher section was added on the first base side, pushing capacity to 2,500 at Dedeaux Field. The 2008 season brought a new scoreboard, along with the million-dollar Rod Dedeaux Research for Baseball Institute (RDRBI) which adds batting cages, a new weight room and state-of-the-art video motion analysis. Prior to the 2011 season, a $600,000 project added new lights to Dedeaux Field to bring the facility to NCAA-mandated standards for hosting postseason play. With dimensions of 335 feet down the right and left field lines, 365 in the right field power alleys and 375 to the left field power alleys, and 395 to straightaway center, Dedeaux Field is a natural grass field. Dedeaux Field has also been used extensively by the entertainment industry. It has been the site of MTV s Rock-and-Jock softball game and was used in the production and filming of several motion pictures, including Mr. Baseball, The Big Leaguer, A League of Their Own and For Love of the Game. Arkansas All-Time (.652) victory on Friday, the Trojans played the longest game in program history since 1995, as they took 15 innings to defeat Northwestern, 2-1. Finally, the Trojan bats came alive on Sunday, collecting 18 hits for 13 runs as the series sweep was complete with a 13-6 victory. Sophomores Vahn Bozoian and AJ Ramirez led the way at the plate for the Trojans on Sunday, as Bozoian blasted the Trojans first home run of the year, while Ramirez went 4-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBI. On the weekend, Garrett Stubbs led the team at the plate, going 6-for-14 (.429). Ramirez and Kevin Swick are next with five hits on the season. Freshmen Jeremy Martinez and Frankie Rios showed a seamless transition from high school to the college game, starting all three games and batting.307 with 2 RBI and.231 with 1 RBI, respectively. NORTH DAKOTA STATE NOTES The Bison will be opening their season on Friday at Dedeaux Field. They return eight starters, including the top eight hitters from last year s postseason lineup, including a pair of first team All-Summit League players in outfielder Kyle Kleinendorst and second baseman Wes Satzinger. The Bison were picked to finish third in the Summit League by a vote of the league s five coaches. Last season the Bison were overall, in conference to finish fourth in the league. SERIES HISTORY This is the first time the Trojans and Bison will meet on the diamond. SEASON OUTLOOK This season s tight-knit squad may seem young with 23 freshman and sophomores, but with 15 of those student-athletes gaining significant playing time on the diamond as freshmen in 2013, second-year head coach Dan Hubbs is looking for the Trojans to use that experience to propel the program back to winning ways in The Trojans return all but 25 innings on the mound from last season, and that experience will be key to the team s success. This spring expect a lot of familiar faces out on the diamond for the Trojans as they are expected to be a lot stronger because of their experience. In 2013, the Trojans lost 12 games by one or two runs and were in countless other games where the scored was either tied or a one-run game in the seventh that they eventually lost. One reason for this was the Trojans entered the season with only about 120 innings of collegiate experience on the mound. This spring it s a different story, as the Trojans return closer to 600 innings of college pitching experience. IMPRESSIVE AT THE PLATE The Trojans will have to replace their top three hitters from a year ago, but senior third baseman infielder Kevin Swick owns the highest returning batting average from 2013 of.305, along with a healthy junior infielder Dante Flores. The Trojans will also rely heavily on five sophomore bats in outfielders Timmy Robinson, Vahn Bozoian and Bobby Stahel, along with infielders AJ Ramirez and Blake Lacey. Lacey leads all returners with 26 RBI from A healthy Omar Cotto Lozada is also an asset for the Trojans because of the speed on the base paths that he provides. IN THE PAC-12 By a vote of the Pac-12 coaches, the Trojans are picked to finish ninth in the conference. The Trojans were picked to finish higher than Washington and Utah. Oregon State was picked to win the Pac-12, followed by Oregon, UCLA, Arizona State, Arizona, Stanford, California and Washington State. IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD Follow the Trojan baseball all year long on twitter, with the baseball specific twitter handle, USC_Baseball. The Trojans are also on Instagram, with the handle SCTrojans_Baseball. BALLPARK FUN For all Friday games, there will be free hot dogs for all USC students. On Sundays this season, there will be an autograph session available to all fans, starting 15 minutes after the game has been completed. Tuesday games will also be Taco Tuesdays. 3 Wyatt Strahan was ranked No. 44 in the junior class, Nigel Nootbaar was ranked 86th. Dan Hubbs is in his second season as head coach at Troy, after spending one season as associate head coach in He becomes only the sixth head coach at USC since Prior to that, he spend 12 seasons as pitching coach at California. Hubbs was a 3-year ( ) letterman at USC. He currently is fourth on the Trojans career saves list (22) and eighth on the career strikeouts per inning chart (9.19). He posted a career record of with a 3.58 ERA in 81 appearances (64 in relief). In his 12-year ( ) tenure at Cal, the 42-year-old Hubbs regularly produced team ERAs among the lowest in the Pac-10. Three times, his pitching staff set a school record for season strikeouts, including 475 in 2011 when the Golden Bears--a program that was slated to be discontinued after 2011 due to budget cuts but was saved through fundraising efforts-- advanced to the College World Series for the first time since His 2011 staff was second in the Pac-10 with a 2.90 team ERA, posted 11 shutouts and at one point went 47 innings without allowing an earned run. Besides being a top recruiter, he helped develop some of the greatest pitchers in Cal history, including current major leaguers Brandon Morrow, who became the school s highest draft pick ever (fifth in 2006), and Tyson Ross, Freshman All-Americans Kevin Miller (2008), Justin Jones (2010) and Kyle Porter (2011) and 2011 All-Pac-10 first teamer Erik Johnson. He produced Pac-10 save leaders in 2001 (Matt Brown) and 2004 (Jesse Ingram) and the school s career strikeout leader (Trevor Hutchinson). He had 4 pitchers drafted in 2011 and 3 in 2008, and saw 25 of his pitchers sign professional baseball contracts. Before going to Cal, Hubbs was the pitching coach of the Yakima Bears (a short-season single A minor league Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate in Yakima, Wash.) and assisted Pepperdine during the 1999 season. After seeing action in just 4 games as a 1990 freshman, he had a 7-2 record with a 3.60 ERA as a relief pitcher in 1991 as the Trojans won the Pac-10 title. He went 7-6 in 1992 with a 3.97 ERA as a starter. He returned to the bullpen in 1993, setting the since-broken USC season saves record (a national-best 18) while going 5-5 with a 2.96 ERA and a team-high 90 strikeouts as he earned All-American first team and All-Pac-10 first team honors. The Trojans advanced to the NCAA Regionals in 1990, 1991 and Hubbs earned a bachelor s degree in finance from USC in Dan Hubbs Head Coach 2nd year 3rd year at USC He had a seven-year ( ) minor league career with the Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. He finished second in the Dodgers organization with 126 strikeouts in In 1996, he went a combined 16-1 between AAA Albuquerque (7-1) and La Romana (9-0) of the Dominican winter league, and was named to Baseball America s Winter League All-Star Team. He led the Pacific Coast League in appearances in 1997, taking the mound 62 times in a 144-game season. He finished his career with a record with nine saves and a 3.75 ERA. In 427 innings, he struck out 436 while walking only 172. He was born on Jan. 23, He and his wife, Alison, a USC graduate, have two sons, Patrick and Charlie. YOUTH MOVEMENT The Trojans have 23 freshmen and sophomores on the roster this season. The sophomores, although only in their second year of college ball, logged significant minutes as true freshmen that should pay off for Troy this year. The freshmen standouts include catcher/designated hitter Jeremy Martinez, infielder Frankie Rios and two-way athlete Jeff Paschke. Martinez is slated to start as the team s designated hitter and will see time behind the plate. Rios will be the Trojans starting shortstop as Blake Lacey rehabs his back injury. Paschke is an athletic righty with some pop in his bat, but is also strong off the mound, where he may see playing time first. TROJANS IN THE MAJORS In the history of the USC baseball program, a total of 108 players had made it to the major leagues. Current major leaguers include pitchers Ryan Cook and Tommy Milone (Oakland A s); Brad Boxberger (Tampa Bay Rays); Grant Green (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim); Lucas Duda (New York Mets); Ian Kennedy (San Diego Padres); JP Howell (Los Angeles Dodgers); Nick Buss (Los Angeles Dodgers). BRINGING HIS SKILLS BACK Former USC shortstop Gabe Alvarez enters his fourth season as assistant coach for the Trojans. Alvarez played at USC as a shortstop from and had a career.338 batting average for the Trojans with 28 home runs and 163 RBI. In 1994, he was a first team All-America pick by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after batting.326 with seven home runs and 51 RBI. He was a second-round selection in the 1995 major league baseball draft by the San Diego Padres and played three seasons in the major leagues ( ). COACHING THE TROOPS Dan Hubbs has also brought in a very capable assistant coach in 2014, Matt Curtis, who formerly was the head coach at Cal State Northridge. He will run the offense for the Trojans and brings a load of experience, both as a player and a coach. Another newcomer on the coaching front is volunteer assistant Vinny Lopez, who brings coaching experience from the professional ranks. BROTHERLY LOVE The Trojans boast two sets of brothers on their roster, with the Aguirre brothers, senior J.R. Aguirre (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and sophomore Carl Aguirre (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and the Wheatley brothers senior Bob Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) and sophomore Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS). Both Aguirre brothers favor play in the outfield, although Carl is a versatile utility player, while the Wheatleys prefer the mound. Bob is a lefty, however, while Brent is a righty. MAKING THE GRADES Academics is highly important at USC, and senior third baseman Kevin Swick (La Canda, Calif./Loyola HS), who boasts a 3.83 GPA as a business administration major was a third team Academic All-American, along with being an All-Academic Pac-12 selection. Interested in finance, Swick held an internship in Alaska while he played summer ball for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in 2012 and this past summer he held an internship with Fidelity Investments in Boston. DEDEAUX FIELD DEDICATIONS Prior to the start of the 2011 season, the scoreboard at Dedeaux Field was renamed the Mike Gillespie Scoreboard in honor of former USC player and head coach Mike Gillespie (now the head coach at UC Irvine). Gillespie, who was a player on USC s 1961 national championship, spent 20 seasons as USC s head coach ( ). He led USC as head coach to the 1998 national championship, as well as four trips to the College World Series during his tenure. The batting cages were renamed for the Boone Family, in honor of the Boone family that included former USC players Aaron and Bret Boone. The Boone family became the first family in baseball history to send three generations to the major league All-Star Game (grandfather, Ray, and father, Bob). Bret Boone played at USC from while his brother Aaron played at USC from Both played in the 2003 All-Star Game as a total of five former Trojans (Geoff Jenkins, Barry Zito and Mark Prior) participated in the game. OPERATION: OMAHA From 1948 to 1978, USC dominated the world of college baseball with 11 national championships in 17 appearances at the College World Series (the 1948 CWS was held in Kalamazoo, Mich., with the CWS moving to Omaha, Neb., in 1949). After the 1978 season, the Trojans went through a drought and did not return to Omaha until 1995, when Troy reached the national championship game. Since 1995, the Trojans have made four trips to Omaha ( ), winning their 12th CWS title in USC has the second-most wins (74) at the CWS and is tied for third for most appearances (21). 3 University of Southern California Baseball usctrojans.com3
