The Trojans went on to win the national championship that year and Dedeaux Field has been their home ever since. The 2013 season marks the 39th season of play at Dedeaux Field. One of the country s finest collegiate baseball structures, Dedeaux Field has continually been improved over recent years with the grandest project taking place before the 2002 season. A $4 million project signified the largest improvement made to the facility as a new clubhouse and players lounge were added on the first base side. Expanded offices for the coaching staff and new Hall of Fame were also part of the project, along with a new restroom pavilion. A new bleacher section was added on the first base side, pushing capacity to 2,500 at Dedeaux Field. The 2008 season brought a new scoreboard, along with the million-dollar Rod Dedeaux Research for Baseball Institute (RDRBI) which adds batting cages, a new weight room and state-of-the-art video motion analysis. Prior to the 2011 season, a $600,000 project added new lights to Dedeaux Field to bring the facility to NCAA-mandated standards for hosting postseason play. With dimensions of 335 feet down the right and left field lines, 365 in the right field power alleys and 375 to the left field power alleys, and 395 to straightaway center, Dedeaux Field is a natural grass field. Dedeaux Field has also been used extensively by the entertainment industry. It has been the site of MTV s Rock-and-Jock softball game and was used in the production and filming of several motion pictures, including Mr. Baseball, The Big Leaguer, A League of Their Own and For Love of the Game. The Trojans were able to plate the eventual game-winning run in the top of the 10th from an RBI single from Kevin Swick. In the rubber match, the Trojans got a stellar start from freshman lefty Kyle Twomey, who went the distance, throwing all nine innings for the Trojans, allowing only three runs on five hits, while striking out five in just his second collegiate start. The outing was key for the Trojans, giving the USC bullpen some much-needed rest after two extra-inning contests. Freshman Andre Ramirez looked strong in the series at the plate, hitting.417 in his first three collegiate starts at designated hitter. Overall he was 5-for-12, with one double, three RBIs for the Trojans. In the midweek contest versus Loyola Marymount, the Trojans played small ball, bunting runners into scoring position, to put up runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to defeat the visiting Lions, 2-1. Freshman Vahn Bozoian drove in the game run for the Trojans in the bottom half of the eighth inning. The Trojans also got stellar pitching from a quartet of Trojans freshman starter Brent Wheatley at the top, followed by Matt Munson, Nigel Nootbaar and Kyle Davis. Nootbaar earned his first victory of the season, while Davis tallied the save, the first of his young career. FRESNO STATE NOTES -- Fresno State, a NCAA Regional team from a year ago, is a dangerous squad, much better than their current 1-6 record indicates. He has looked strong through 11.1 innings and two starts, striking out seven and only allowing three earned runs. Wyatt Strahan (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park HS), Saturday s projected starter boasted 22 appearances as a freshman last season, second-most on the squad behind the left-handed specialist who had 29. He finished 3-3 with two saves and a 1.37 ERA through 26.1 innings pitched. So far this season, Strahan has impressed in his new starting role. He has two nodecisions, but leads the team with 11 strikeouts through 11.1 innings. He boasts a 1.59 ERA. Last week he no-hit Cal State Northridge through the first 4.2 innings on the road. Freshman LHP Kyle Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) enters the season as the Sunday starter after an impressive fall camp with the Trojans. He was selected in the 3rd round of the 2012 Major League Draft by the Oakland A s. He is now 1-0 on the year and tallied a complete game in just his second career start. He has a 2.93 ERA and is second on the team with nine strikeouts. FRESHMAN STEPPING UP The Trojans will be looking towards a strong crop of freshman in 2013 to really play key roles this season. The class, featuring Twomey and Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS), both MLB draft picks out of high school, was ranked No. 19 nationally by Baseball America. Blake Lacey (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) and Reggie Southall (Gardena, Calif./Junipero Serra HS) are up-and-coming middle infielders for the Trojans, while Vahn Bozoian (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) and Turner Clouse (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley HS) will look to contribute in the outfield. On the mound, the Trojans have junior college transfer LHP Sean Silva (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) and true freshman lefties Marc Huberman (Los Angeles/Hamilton HS) and Sean Alder (Chatsworth, Calif./Sierra Canyon). MAKING THE RETURN Redshirt senior outfielder Greg Zebrack (Northridge, Calif./ Campbell Hall/UPenn) returns to USC after playing for the Trojans as a true freshman in As a true freshman he appeared in 21 games, making five starts. He then transferred to UPenn, and after sitting out the season due to transfer rules, Zebrack appeared in 78 games, earning All-Ivy League and All-Big Five honors as a redshirt sophomore in and a redshirt junior in During his time as a Quaker, Zebrack led the team in many offensive categories. Last season he batted.343 and led the team in on-base percentage (.448), slugging percentage (.657), RBI (28), runs (34), stolen bases (10), doubles (18) and home runs (7). MISTER ROBERTS Junior shortstop James Roberts (Cupertino/Archbishop Mitty HS) batted.289 (54-for-187) with 24 RBIs while starting all 54 games as a sophomore. In just two seasons at Troy, Roberts has tallied 110 starts. SETTING THE EXAMPLE Senior infielder Adam Landecker (Calabasas/Calabasas HS) provides sure hands for the Trojans in the infield, as he has only made 10 errors over the past two seasons, where he has started in 82 total games. Landecker also leads all returners with a.329 batting averag, starting 39 games as a junior before being out the last 16 games with an injury. BROTHERLY LOVE The Trojans boast two sets of brothers on their roster, with the Aguirre brothers, senior J.R. Aguirre (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and freshman Carl Aguirre (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and the Wheatley brothers junior Bob Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) and Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS). Both Aguirre brothers favor play in the outfield, although Carl is a versatile utility player, while the Wheatleys prefer the mound. Bob is a lefty, however, while Brent is a righty. SUMMER FUN The Trojans spread across the country to play summer baseball, and brought home many accolades to Troy. Competing in the Alaska League for the Peninsula Oilers was sophomore pitcher Nigel Nootbaar (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS). He appeared in 13 games, compiling a 3-3 record with a 3.41 ERA in 31.2 innings pitched. He tallied 35 strikeouts, good for second on the team. Touted as potentially the most athletic player in the league, the switch-hitting Nootbaar also played 17 games at third base, collecting 10 hits and driving in two runs. Both Baseball America and Perfect Game ranked Nootbaar was the third-best prospect in the Alaska League, and he also competed in the Alaska League All-Star Team. Junior catcher Jake Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) made his mark in the Cape Cod League, suiting up for the Orleans Firebirds. Hernandez was named a Cape League All-Star, starting for the East squad and earned the league s Manny Robello 10th Player Award, given to the player who performs above and beyond expectations. Named after long-time volunteer Manny Robello, who served as the director of both the Cape League and the Cotuit Athletic Association, the award recognizes a player in the league who shows the highest level of continuous leadership and dedication throughout the length of the season. Hernandez played in 33 games, hitting.239 and driving in 19 runs, while showing some pop with five home runs and five doubles. He was joined by James Roberts (Cupertino, Calif./ Archbishop Mitty), who suited up for the Cotuit Kettleers and batted.306 with 25 RBIs, and Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) of the Chatham Anglers, where he appeared in 20 games and drove in three runs. MAKING THE GRADES Academics is highly important at USC, and five Trojans last season earned All-Academic Pac-12 honors. The only returner of the five is junior third baseman Kevin Swick (La Canda, Calif./Loyola HS), who boasts a 3.77 GPA as a business administration major. Interested in finance, Swick held an internship in Alaska while he played summer ball for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots. The other four Trojans all graduated and earned their degrees last season. Redshirt senior transfer Greg Zebrack (Northridge, Calif./Campbell Hall/UPenn) comes back to Troy with a B.A. in communication and commerce, and is currently a graduate student working on his MBA at USC. While at UPenn he earned All-Academic Big Five and Ivy League honors. He had a 3.4 GPA as a undegrad, and also earned that in his MBA program so far. DEDEAUX FIELD DEDICATIONS Prior to the start of the 2011 season, the scoreboard at Dedeaux Field was renamed the Mike Gillespie Scoreboard in honor of former USC player and head coach Mike Gillespie (now the head coach at UC Irvine). Gillespie, who was a player on USC s 1961 national championship, spent 20 seasons as USC s head coach ( ). He led USC as head coach to the 1998 national championship, as well as four trips to the College World Series during his tenure. The batting cages were renamed for the Boone Family, in honor of the Boone family that included former USC players Aaron and Bret Boone. The Boone family became the first family in baseball history to send three generations to the major league All-Star Game (grandfather, Ray, and father, Bob). Bret Boone played at USC from while his brother Aaron played at USC from Both played in the 2003 All-Star Game as a total of five former Trojans (Geoff Jenkins, Barry Zito and Mark Prior) participated in the game. OPERATION: OMAHA From 1948 to 1978, USC dominated the world of college baseball with 11 national championships in 17 appearances at the College World Series (the 1948 CWS was held in Kalamazoo, Mich., with the CWS moving to Omaha, Neb., in 1949). After the 1978 season, the Trojans went through a drought and did not return to Omaha until 1995, when Troy reached the national championship game. Since 1995, the Trojans have made four trips to Omaha ( ), winning their 12th CWS title in USC has the second-most wins (74) at the CWS and is tied for third for most appearances (21). TROJAN BASEBALL HALL OF FAME On Feb. 1, 2003, the USC Baseball Hall of Fame opened to the public for the first time. The Hall of Fame was the final part of a $4 million Dedeaux Field renovation project that included a new locker room, seating pavilion on the first base side and stadium seating. All 12 national championship trophies are permanently displayed as well as the awards won by former Trojan pitcher Mark Prior during his 2001 national player of the year season. Prior made a sizable donation to help complete the project. The major league uniforms of former Trojans are also on display. THE OTHER HALLS OF FAME Former USC pitcher Tom Seaver was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992 with a 98.8% vote, which remains the highest percentage ever for an inducted member. In the summer of 2006, legendary coach Rod Dedeaux (who passed away on January 5, 2006) was a member of the inaugural class for the College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock, Texas. Another USC addition was made in 2007 when former outfielder Fred Lynn is inducted. He appeared on three consecutive USC national championship squads (1971, 1972 and 1973) and had a career.320 average with 28 home runs and 111 RBI. He also earned 1971 All-College World Series honors for the Trojans. CHANGES At the helm for the Trojans will be first-year head coach Dan Hubbs, who was named to the position on Wednesday, Feb. 13, by athletic director Pat Haden after two-year head coach Frank Cruz was terminated for knowingly violating NCAA Countable Athletically-Related Activities limitations within the program. Those CARA rules restrict the number of hours student-athletes can spend in activities directed by or supervised by the coaching staff. In addition, the University has self-imposed a reduction in the number of practice session hours for the USC baseball team this season and next year. USC has alerted the NCAA and Pac-12 of the infraction and the University-imposed actions. 4 University of Southern California Baseball usctrojans.com4

8 2013 Game Recaps Feb. 22- Cal State Northridge Dedeaux Field Feb #22 Cal State Fullerton Fullerton, Calif. USC CSF x WP - Eschelman (1-0) LP - Wheatley, Bo. (0-1) S - Lorenzen (1) Records: USC (0-1), Cal State Fullerton (1-0) The Trojans were getting no-hit for 4.2 innings, before Kevin Swick broke up Eschelman s no-hitter with a single to third base. Wheatley had a strong outing in just his third career start, while James Roberts tagged a ball over the left field wall for a two-run home run that gave the team a short-lived 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Feb CSU Bakersfield Bakersfield, Calif. USC CSUB x WP - Brattvet (1-0) LP - Gonzales (0-1) S - Aikenhead (1) Records: USC (0-2), CSU Bakersfield (2-0) Wyatt Strahan had an excellent outing in his first colleigate start, going 5.0 innings, allowing only four hits and three runs (2 earned), while striking out four. Greg Zebrack tatooed a ball to deep center field for a two-run home run, his first as a Trojan. Despite taking the loss, freshman righty Shane Gonzales looked good in his collegiate debut. CSUB s Cael Brockmeyer put away the game with a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the eighth. NEB USC WP - Davis (1-0) LP - Vogt (0-1) Records: USC (1-2), Nebraska (0-4) Feb Nebraska Dedeaux Field The Trojans needed last-second heroics from Adam Landecker, with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to score Kevin Swick and give the Trojans the 4-3 victory. Garrett Stubbs also delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to tie things up, 3-3. Starter Kyle Twomey, making his first collegiate start, went a strong 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out three. This was the Trojans first double-digit hits game of the year. Feb Loyola Marymount Dedeaux Field LMU USC x WP - Nootbaar (1-0) LP - Florer (0-1) S - Davis (1) Records: USC (2-2), Loyola Marymount (2-2) The Trojans saw solid pitching from a quartet of pitchers, including starter Brent Wheatley, Matt Munson, Nigel Nootbaar and Kyle Davis, as they had late-inning heroics to take a victory for the secondstraight game. In the bottom of the eighth, Greg Zebrack singled to third base, and was moved around on a bunt by James Roberts to second. That set the table for a two-out single by Vahn Bozoian to score the go-ahead run. CSUN USC WP - Goosen-Brown (1-0) LP - Davis (1-1) S - None Records: USC (2-3), Cal State Northridge (4-1) Another strong outing by starter Bob Wheatley propelled the Trojans to an early 4-1 lead. However, the Matadors were able to get to the Trojan bullpen after the sixth inning, forcing extra innings, where they tacked up five in the top of the 11th to give the Matadors the victory. Feb Cal State Northridge Northridge, Calif. USC CSUN WP - Munson (1-0) LP - Salas (0-1) S - Adler (1) Records: USC (3-3), Cal State Northridge (4-2) Starter Wyatt Strahan, in just his second career start held the Matadors hittless through the first 4.2 innings. The Matadors took advantage of USC s poor defense, that made four errors and allowed four unearned runs to cross the plate, tying things up and forcing extra innings for the second-straight game. Kevin Swick drove in the eventual game-winning run for USC in the top of the 10th inning. Adler came in to strikeout two and earned the save in the bottom of the 10th. Feb Cal State Northridge Dedeaux Field CSUN USC x WP - Twomey (1-0) LP - Copping (1-1) S - None Records: USC (4-3), Cal State Northridge (4-3) Freshman starter Kyle Twomey went the distance in his first collegiate victory, throwing all 9.0 innings, allowing only two runs on five hits, while striking out five. The outing was big, to save the taxed Trojan bullpen that had participated in two-straight extra inning contests. Offensively, freshman designated hitter AJ Ramirez went 3-for-4, tallying two RBIs in the victory. Sophomore first baseman Dante Flores also drove in a run, on 2-for-4 hitting. Feb Long Beach State Dedeaux Field LBSU USC x WP - Wheatley, Brent (1-0) LP - Sabo (1-1) S - Adler (2) Records: USC (5-3), Long Beach State (5-4) Freshman righty Brent Wheatley earned his first collegiate win, going 6.1 innings and allowing only one run on four hits, as he masterfully pitched out of jams in just his second collegiate start. Sophomore first baseman Dante Flores launched a solo shot to right field in the bottom of the third innings, to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead that they would never look back from. Flores home run was the first of the year at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans were able to take advantage of wild Dirtbag pitchers to pad their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Long Beach walked in one run and hit and batter to bring in the second of the inning. 8 University of Southern California Baseball usctrojans.com8
