This is the second consecutive meeting between ULM and Texas-San Antonio to open the regular season. The Warhawks and the Roadrunners split a four-game series last season at Warhawk Field. Joey Rapp earned All-Sun Belt Conference first team honors in his first season as a Warhawk in 2011 after transferring from Chipola College. The Sarasota, Fla. native belted a team-high 15 doubles and 13 home runs while adding 46 RBIs and scoring 46 runs. Caleb Clowers led ULM in multi-hit games for the second consecutive season, registering 19 such outings in 54 games played. Clowers struck out only 21 times in 216 at-bats in Clowers, a 2012 Preseason All-Sun Belt selection, was the second-most efficient fielder in the nation during his junior campaign, recording just one error in 250 chances to finish with a.996 fielding percentage. Corben Green opened 2011 with one or more hits in his first 12 games in a ULM uniform. Green will begin 2012 riding a 14-game on-base streak. Joey Rapp posted a team-best 47-game on-base streak in 2011 that spanned from Feb. 20 against Texas-San Antonio until the Warhawks faced UL- Lafayette May 19. The Warhawks have won 10 of their last 12 season openers, including a 3-2 win over Texas-San Antonio last year at Warhawk Field. The Warhawks return four of their top five offensive players from last season based on on-base percentage, only Caleb Knox (.300) is no longer on the ULM roster -- Corben Green (.547), Les Aulds (.447), Joey Rapp (.438) and Joey Cesario (.369). The Warhawks batted.292 during the 24-game non-conference slate in 2011, leading the team to a 15-9 record. ULM outscored its non-sun Belt opponents , drew 45 more walks (121-76), and held the edge in stolen bases (38-26). 1 ULM at Texas-San Antonio Feb sSan Antonio, Texas UTSA Roadrunners 2011 Record: Southland Record: Last 5 / Last 10: Streak: Ranking: BA: NR / CB: NR / NCBWA: NR / ESPN: NR Head Coach: Sherman Corbett Career Record: (11 Years) Record at UTSA: (11 Years) Stadium: Roadrunner Field Capacity: 800 (Seating) Radio: 540 AM Live Audio: N/A Live Stats: ulmwarhawks.com Live Video: N/A Probable Pitching Match-Ups (2011 Statistics) Friday, February 17 Casey Selsor LHP Sr. 5-5, 2.90 ERA, 99.1 IP, 79 K, 24 BB ULM Projected Lineup (2011 Stats / *JC Stats) C Joey Cesario.243, 2 2B, 6 RBI, 4 HP 1B Joey Rapp 2B Caleb Clowers SS Jeremy Sy 3B Judd Edwards LF Les Aulds.318, 15 2B, 13 HR, 46 RBI, 46 R.287, 11 2B, 3 HR, 39 RBI, 1 E in 54 G.246, 7 2B, 4 3B, 3 HR, 21 RBI.255, 8 2B, 2 HR, 21 RBI, 25 R.339, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 24 SB, 41 R CF Brandon Alexander*.237, 7 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 20 RBI, 26 R RF Chris Dudley* DH Corben Green Randy Zeigler LHP Jr. 5-5, 5.04 ERA, 84.0 IP, 69 K, 33 BB.333, 2 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R, 7 SB.491, 8 2B, 18 RBI, 11 R,.547 OBP ULM has posted a winning record at Warhawk Field in eight of the last 10 seasons. 3 Green Looks To Bounce Back ULM junior infielder Corben Green saw a dream season grind to a crushing halt when he suffered a season-ending injury running to first base against Southern Utah. Green opened 2011 with a.491 batting average (28- of-57), eight doubles, one triple, one home run and 18 RBIs. The transfer from Shelton State Community College hit for the cycle against Northwestern State, finishing 5-for-5 with seven RBIs. Green was granted a medical redshirt and has two years of eligibility remaining at ULM. More on Green In recognition of his efforts against Northwestern State, Green was named Pro-Line Hitter of the Week, Louisiana Hitter of the Week and Sun Belt Conference Hitter of the Week. The Tuscaloosa, Ala. native was further recognized by the College Baseball Hall of Fame for his achievement. Browning Also On the Mend Wil Browning will be using his fifth season of eligibility in 2012 after making only five appearances last season for the Warhawks. The right-hander allowed two runs over six innings in the first start of his career against then-no. 25 Southern Miss in his final outing of Off And Running ULM baserunners were credited with 61 stolen bases in 2011, nearly a 25 percent increase from the theft total of the Warhawks in 2010 (39 stolen bases). Les Aulds, last year s team leader with 24 steals in 30 chances, returns this season along with Jeremy Sy, whose 11 swipes in 14 attempts ranked second on the 2011 squad. The Man With The Golden Glove Senior infielder Caleb Clowers concluded his junior campaign a mere one percentage point behind Connecticut first baseman Mike Nemeth for the national lead in fielding percentage (.996). Clowers committed his only error of the season against Northwestern State, but was completely spotless over his final 34 games. The second baseman s prowess in the field earned Clowers a nomination to the 2011 Rawlings Gold Glove team. Only nine players in the country are chosen as Gold Glove recipients. The native of West Monroe was the sole ULM representative on the 2012 Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference baseball team. LAST SEASON S TEAM SPLITS (2011) ULM... Rapp was the first ULM player chosen to the conference s top team since Ben Soigner in What The Warhawks Are Bringing Back The cumulative totals reflect the amount the members of the 2012 team accounted for during the 2011 season. The Warhawks are all-time to start the season, but have won 10-of-12 season openers since The Warhawks are 23-5 all-time in season openers at home and are 11-1 in season openers at Warhawk Field -- the lone exception was an extra-inning loss to Northwestern State in ULM has won 13-of-14 season openers at home dating back to The first victory in the stretch of 13 straight was a 6-2 decision over Northwestern State -- it was the only time in the 198 previous meetings that the two schools played in a season opener prior to the 2009 season. On the road it has been a different story for the Warhawks. ULM is 6-20 in season openers away from Warhawk Field since 1972, but ULM has won its last two season openers on the road -- a 1-0 victory at Nicholls State to start the 2008 season and a 6-5 win at No. 17 Ole Miss to start the 2010 season. The victory at Ole Miss was the Rebels first Opening Day loss since The Pros Are Already Watching Three ULM players have previously been chosen in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Newcomers Brandon Alexander (29th Round, 2009-Baltimore Orioles) and Alex Hermeling (43rd Round, 2011-Los Angeles Dodgers), and 2011 All-Sun Belt first teamer Joey Rapp (41st Round, 2009-Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; 28th Round, 2010-Washington Nationals) were drafted by Major League Baseball clubs but elected not to sign. Broadcast Information The Warhawks games this season will be broadcast live on 540 AM in Northeast Louisiana and worldwide on ulmwarhawks.com. Bruce Hanks returns for his eighth season as the Voice of the Warhawks. Warhawks All*Access returns for its fourth year and fans will be able to watch all 30 of ULM s home games and select road games live on ulmwarhawks.com. Keeping The Local Flavor Head coach Jeff Schexnaider hasn t ventured far to find a lot of the talent on the Warhawk roster. Nine players on the 33-man roster are from the Monroe- West Monroe area. 4 Warhawks to Watch >>>> Shake Climbing The Ladder ULM head coach Jeff Schexnaider passed George Luffey ( ) for fifth place on the all-time ULM wins list at Middle Tennessee last season. The sixth year skipper of the Warhawks and 2008 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year enters 2012 with 136 career victories. Lou St. Amant has the most career coaching victories with 414, while Smoke Laval has the highest winning percentage at.603 ( ). Shake needs 15 more victories to pass Brad Holland for fourth on the all-time Warhawk wins list. ULM All-Time Coaching Wins 1. ULM has posted at least 15 home victories at Warhawk Field on 22 different occasions, winning over 20 games in nine separate seasons. The Warhawks have 16 players on the 33-man roster that spent time playing at a junior college. Pitcher Andrew Richardson transferred from four-year New Orleans. New Bats Impacting Offense With the introduction of a new metal bat design just prior to the 2011 baseball season, many predicted that offensive totals in college baseball would be affected. Last season, the wood-like bats made their impact on the ULM offense. The Warhawks batted.267 with 32 home runs and 243 RBIs with the new bats after posting a.273 average with 41 round-trippers and 280 RBI in Conversely, the team s ERA dropped from 7.88 in 2010 to 5.55 in Sun Belt Standings (As of 2/17/12) Team SBC Pct. Schexnaider, the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, guided the Warhawks to a Sun Belt regular season conference championship in just his second season. He followed that success by leading the Warhawks to the 2009 Sun Belt Tournament Championship Game. ULM s march to the title game featured an elimination game against third-seed and host Troy and two elimination games against regular season cochampion Western Kentucky. Those two accomplishments are elevated by the fact that the Sun Belt consistently ranks among the top seven conferences in the NCAA based on RPI. Schexnaider has amassed a record in his five seasons on the Bayou. During his five seasons as ULM s skipper, the Warhawks have posted the three highest home run totals in school history. In fact, ULM combined for more home runs in 2008 and 2009 (178) than it did in the four seasons ( home runs) before Schexnaider took over the club. The Warhawks put together their most successful backto-back seasons since the 2000 and 2001 campaigns with a combined 66 victories in 2008 and Over the past three seasons the Warhawks have knocked off four ranked teams - all on the road - including a victory over No. 5 Arkansas in ULM became the first team to defeat Ole Miss on opening day since 1981 when it defeated the No. 17 Rebels 6-5 to open the 2010 season. ULM defeated a pair of teams that advanced to the 2009 College World Series - Arkansas and Southern Miss - and came within two extra-inning losses of sweeping their series against both schools. The offensive and defensive transformation under Schexnaider has been remarkable to say the least. ULM has posted the top two team batting averages, the top two hits totals, two of the top three runs scored totals, two of the top three doubles totals, the top two RBI totals, two of the top four fielding percentage totals and the top two double plays turned totals in school history. Under his guidance Ben Soignier became one of the best players in ULM history and one of the best players in the NCAA. Soignier, who is ULM s only three-time All-American, holds the ULM career records for at-bats, hits, doubles and total bases, while ranking second in runs scored, third in home runs, third in RBIs, fourth in stolen bases and 10th in saves. ULM has had a player earn All-America honors in each of the last three seasons under Schexnaider s guidance. Judd Edwards joined the list of elite players in Warhawk history in 2010 when Ping!Baseball tabbed him to their Freshman All- America squad. Two Warhawks have been selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Player s Draft in three of Schexnaider s four seasons as head coach. The 2009 Warhawks featured a trio of All-Sun Belt selections and Boomer Blanchard was named Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year. Blanchard tallied the second most hits in a single-season in ULM history in addition to scoring the third most runs and accumulating the seventh most total bases. ULM finished 18th in the country in double plays turned (64), 27th in runs scored (485), 29th in home runs (85), 33rd in slugging percentage (.519), 34th in hits (685) and 38th in batting average (.325). In 2008, the Schexnaider led Warhawks set school records in hits (697), doubles (139), home runs (93), RBIs (465), total bases (1,141) and double plays turned (76). Shake Year-by-Year Overall Pct.
