In his lone season in Norman, he helped OU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since Johnson made an immediate impact on the Sooner pitching staff last season. Oklahoma pitchers surrendered the least amount of home runs in the Big 12 in 2017 and combined for 531 strikeouts to rank fourth in the league and fourth in OU single-season history. The Sooners 9.26 strikeouts per nine innings ranked second in the conference. As a team, OU pitchers struck out 10 or more batters on 24 occasions. Johnson was hired as the pitching coach at Texas for the 2007 season under Augie Garrido. In 10 seasons, Johnson helped the Longhorns to seven NCAA Regional appearances, four Super Regionals and three CWS. During his tenure in Austin, 32 pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft, including 14 in the first 10 rounds and three first-round picks. Johnson oversaw the development of six UT pitchers to make it to the majors. The Texas pitching staff produced a team ERA below 3.00 on five occasions and struck out better than 7.5 per-nine-innings in five of his last eight seasons. Prior to his time in Austin, Johnson was the head coach at Navarro College of the NJCAA s Texas Eastern Athletic Conference. From , he guided the Bulldogs to 13 NJCAA Regionals, nine TEAC championships and four regional titles, while compiling 450 wins. A standout baseball player at Denton High School, Johnson began his collegiate playing career at Ranger (Texas) College. After a two-year career there, Johnson moved on to play baseball at the University of North Texas in 1988 before the school dropped its baseball program. He completed his collegiate playing career at UT-Pan American, lettering for the Broncs in 1989 and receiving his bachelor s degree in Johnson earned a master s degree in education from UT-Tyler in A native of Denton, Texas, Johnson and his wife, Cathy, have two sons, Tyler and Garrett. Scouting the Shockers... Wichita State is 13-4 overall and ranked No. 26 by Collegiate Baseball News. The Shockers, whose Friday series opener was cancelled, split a two-game series against former Missouri Valley Conference rival Creighton in Omaha over the weekend. Wichita, which is playing its first season in the American Athletic Conference, owns quality series wins over Nebraska and UT Arlington. Third baseman Alec Bohm is hitting a team-high.344 with five home runs and 18 RBI. Center fielder Greyson Jenista is hitting.288 and matches Bohm for the team lead in homers at five to go with 14 RBI. Lefty Alex Segal gets the start for the Shockers on Tuesday. He sports a 5.68 ERA and has struck out 12 in 6.1 innings with no record. Last Time They Met... The Shockers came in to Norman and snapped No. 13 Oklahoma s 13-game win streak with a 4-2 decision on March 7, In a game that lasted over four hours, only six total runs were scored on 11 hits with Wichita State outhitting the Sooners, 6-4. OU pitchers totaled 18 strikeouts and WSU pitchers totaled 11. Despite leaving 13 runners on base, the Shockers took advantage of eight walks, three hit batsmen, three wild pitches and stole five bases. The key play came in the sixth as Wichita State had a 2-1 lead, the bases loaded and two down. A groundball to the right side should ve ended the inning, but the call on the field was that OU lefty Braidyn Fink missed the bag at first attempting to get the force as two unearned runs came in to score. All-Time vs. Wichita State... Oklahoma leads the all-time series with Wichita State, 16-12, including an 8-4 win for the Sooners at the 1992 College World Series. Oklahoma had won seven straight over the Shockers prior to a 2015 meeting, where Wichita State overcame an early 6-0 deficit to earn the victory. Sooner-Shocker Connection... Wichita State s fifth-year head coach Todd Butler played at Oklahoma for two seasons, He was named an ABCA All- American in 1988 and set the Sooner record for stolen bases in a season with 46. He is tied for 14th all-time at OU with 53. Senior Leader... Kyle Mendenhall has the distinction of being the only four-year senior on the OU roster; a position that has been held by just one player in each of the last three seasons. Hunter Haley was the only four-year player in 2016 and Austin O Brien the only one in Mendenhall is building on his junior campaign, which was his best offensive season through three years at OU. A.242 career hitter, he is currently hitting.357 and driven in 23 runs, the highest total of his career through just 22 games. Deep Threat in Center or Under Center... Sooner quarterback and outfielder Kyler Murray has made the adjustment to center field in his second year on the diamond. Murray, who threw three touchdown passes in only 21 attempts in 2017, has found his knack for the long ball this spring. He is tied for the team lead with three home runs. Murray hit his third of the season vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi (3/9) for his first career grand slam. The grand slam capped a five-run seventh, that was tied 6-6 when the Sooners came to bat, and stood as the difference in an 11-7 Oklahoma victory. Up Next... Walker, who has started all but two games in his entire career at OU, is the only true outfielder of the group. Harris moved to left field last season to solidify a position that had been started by six different players, including 14 starts by Murray, until Harris started the last 17 games of the season. Murray, a high school All-American middle infielder, did not play in the outfield until last season and had previously not played baseball in the spring of Scoring Early... OU scored in the first inning for the eighth time in 10 games against Texas Southern (3/14). The Sooners are 8-2 when scoring in the first inning this season; outscoring opponents 16-8 in the first. However, the opposition holds a lead on runs scored in the second and third innings combined. OU is also 11-3 on the year when pushing across the first run of the game. Crooked Numbers... The OU lineup was hitting.220 following a 5-2 loss at Dallas Baptist (2/27). Since turning the calendar to March, the Sooners are hitting.319 and have collected 10 hits or more in nine of the last 12 games. Oklahoma is 10-3 in March and averaging 7.1 runs per game, including its two largest offensive outbursts of the season. In the first 10 games of the season, the Sooners scored more than one run in an inning only 10 times and have since scored two or more in an inning on 23 occasions in the last 12 games. Two-Way Player... Cade Cavalli has started eight games at first base, two at third, one as the designated hitter and vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi (3/10) got his first start on the mound. He is hitting.241 at the plate with 12 runs and 10 RBI. He hit a home run on just the second pitch he saw in his career vs. Indiana (2/16). Cavalli earned his first win in relief against Valparaiso (2/25). He is the first OU player to homer and win a game in a season since All-American Sheldon Neuse hit 10 home runs and went 4-1 as the Sooner closer in Jacob Evans also won six games and hit one home run in 2015; having hit a walk-off jack as the winning pitcher vs. Kansas (4/2/15). Behind the Dish... Three catchers have started four games or more for the Sooners this season. Freshman Justin Mitchell and sophomore Brady Lindsly have each started nine games and junior Domenic DeRenzo four. Mitchell s nine starts are already the most by a freshman since DeRenzo started 33 in OU has not had three or more catchers start four games or more since Mac James, Anthony Hermelyn and Dylan Neal in Winning Comparison... In 33 games, including 27 starts, Jake Irvin owns a 15-5 record. His career 15 wins passed Robert Tasin for the fifth most by a Sooner pitcher to take the mound in the last 10 years. Michael Rocha ( ) won the most games over that period with 27 followed by Dillon Overton ( ) with 23. Overton won his 14th in the 44th game and 23rd start of his career, while Rocha s 14th win came in his 47th game as a Sooner. MLB Opening Day Starter... The Milwaukee Brewers announced this week that former Sooner Chase Anderson ( ) will start opening day. This marks the third year in a row that a Sooner pitcher will start on MLB opening day. Jon Gray started for the Rockies in 2017 and Garrett Richards started for the Angels in Anderson went 12-4 with a 2.74 ERA in Milwaukee last season. As a Sooners, he owned an 8-5 record with two saves pitching in 50 games, primarily as a reliever, with 124 strikeouts in 115 career innings. An All-Big 12 First Team pick a year ago, Walker has previously earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America and All-Big 12 Freshman in A Stars and Stripes Summer... Over the summer, Steele Walker split his time between the Team USA Collegiate National Team and the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League. As a part of Team USA s 24-man roster, he hit.333 and slugged.514 in 20 games. Walker was named MVP of the teams two series wins over Chinese Taipei and Cuba. He became the first Sooner to play for Team USA since Brian Shackelford pitched for the Team USA CNT in Teammate Jake Irvin was invited to tryouts with Walker and represented Team USA in an early exhibition game and later was recalled for a start prior the team s series vs. Japan. Sooner Speedster... Kyler Murray is the fastest Sooner on the baseball diamond and perhaps the football field as well. OU s back-up quarterback in 2017 stole a team-leading 12 bases in 13 attempts last season, including 12 in a row. He had a string of 14 consecutive successful stolen base attempts snapped against Kennesaw State (3/17). The Sooner record for consecutive stolen bases without getting caught is 30 by Rick Gutierrez ( ). On the gridiron, Murray played in seven games for the Big 12 Champions and made one start. He was 18-for-21 through the air with three touchdown passes and 359 passing yards. Murray added 142 yards on the ground; averaging 10.1 yards per carry.
