Oklahoma enters the 22nd Big 12 Championship as the No. 4 seed. The Sooners open the double-elimination tournament on Wednesday against No. 5 seed Baylor at 9 a.m. from Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. OU and Baylor are the only two Big 12 teams to appear in all 22 Big 12 Championships. About the Sooners... Oklahoma is overall and finished in fourth place in the Big 12 with a record. The Sooners are hitting.277 as a team, including a.284 mark in conference games to rank third in the league. Junior right fielder Steele Walker leads the way with a.352 average, hitting.370 in 23 conference games, and slugging.606 with 13 home runs and 53 RBI this season. Redshirt sophomore center fielder Kyler Murray ranks second on the team with 10 home runs and 46 RBI, while hitting.292 this year. In the month of May, Murray has homered four times and driven in 14, while recording a.364 batting average. The OU pitching staff owns a 3.87 earned run average on the season, which ranks third in the conference. In Big 12 play, the Sooners boast a 4.12 ERA and rank second the conference with a.241 batting average against. Junior righthanded pitcher Jake Irvin, the Sooners Friday night starter, is 6-1 with a 3.01 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 86.2 innings worked. In his lone season in Norman, he helped OU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since Johnson made an immediate impact on the Sooner pitching staff last season. Oklahoma pitchers surrendered the least amount of home runs in the Big 12 in 2017 and combined for 531 strikeouts to rank fourth in the league and fourth in OU single-season history. The Sooners 9.26 strikeouts per nine innings ranked second in the conference. As a team, OU pitchers struck out 10 or more batters on 24 occasions. Johnson was hired as the pitching coach at Texas for the 2007 season under Augie Garrido. In 10 seasons, Johnson helped the Longhorns to seven NCAA Regional appearances, four Super Regionals and three CWS. During his tenure in Austin, 32 pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft, including 14 in the first 10 rounds and three first-round picks. Johnson oversaw the development of six UT pitchers to make it to the majors. The Texas pitching staff produced a team ERA below 3.00 on five occasions and struck out better than 7.5 per-nine-innings in five of his last eight seasons. Prior to his time in Austin, Johnson was the head coach at Navarro College of the NJCAA s Texas Eastern Athletic Conference. From , he guided the Bulldogs to 13 NJCAA Regionals, nine TEAC championships and four regional titles, while compiling 450 wins. A standout baseball player at Denton High School, Johnson began his collegiate playing career at Ranger (Texas) College. After a two-year career there, Johnson moved on to play baseball at the University of North Texas in 1988 before the school dropped its baseball program. He completed his collegiate playing career at UT-Pan American, lettering for the Broncs in 1989 and receiving his bachelor s degree in Johnson earned a master s degree in education from UT-Tyler in A native of Denton, Texas, Johnson and his wife, Cathy, have two sons, Tyler and Garrett. Scouting the Bears... Baylor enters the postseason with a record overall, and finished with a mark in league play under third-year head coach Steve Rodriguez. The Bears come in following a road series win at West Virginia. The Baylor lineup is led by junior outfielder T.J. Raguse who is batting.372. Sophomore first baseman Andy Thomas, who is fourth on the team in RBI with 31, is hitting.347. On the hill, Baylor is guided by sophomore Cody Bradford who boasts a 6-5 record and a 2.60 ERA in 83.0 innings. In his last start (5/16), Bradford took the loss at West Virginia, allowing one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts. In league play, Bradford led the Big 12 in ERA (1.88) and posted a 4-3 record with two complete games. Senior Troy Montemayor ranks second in the conference with 11 saves this season. Last Time They Met... Oklahoma completed the sweep of Baylor with a 6-1 win at L. Dale Mitchell Park on March 31. The victory marked the first time that Sooners swept their first two Big 12 series to begin conference play during the Big 12 era. Nathan Wiles pitched five innings, alowing one run, not earned, with three strikeouts. Dylan Grove qualifed for the save, pitching the final four innings. Cade Cavalli and Steele Walker both homered and finished with two RBI. The win gave OU its third consecutive series win over Baylor. Against Baylor... Oklahoma leads the all-time series over Baylor, 45-37, and swept the Bears in Norman, March OU has won eight out of its last 10 matchups with the Bears dating back to OU and Baylor have faced off six times at the Big 12 Championship with the Sooners winning three in a row. Oklahoma sophomore catcher Brady Lindsly and Baylor sophomore catcher Shea Langeliers were high school teammates at Keller (Texas) High School from Langeliers was the primary catcher, while Lindsly moved to shortstop. As a freshman, Langeliers was a Freshman All-American and member of the All-Big 12 Second Team as a.313 hitter with 10 home runs and 38. RBI. Lindsly hit.271 in just 14 starts behind Renae Martinez; another All-Big 12 Second Team member. This season, Langeliers is hitting.235 with nine home runs and 37 RBI, while Lindsly is hitting.276 with one home run and 26 RBI. Kyler Knows... Kyler Murray shined in OU s series win at UCF, blasting a pair of go-ahead three-run home runs in the Sooners victories on May 12 and 13. Murray drove in four and finished 2-for-4 with a home run and double in game two of the series. He followed up with a pair of walks, had three RBI and finished 1-for-3 in the series final. Murray is hitting.364 with four home runs and 14 RBI in the month of May, hitting three home runs in the last five games. Power Surge... Oklahoma went 30 games between multi-home run games having gone yard three times opening day vs. Indiana (2/16) and Kyler Murray s two long balls at TCU (4/6). The Sooners then homered in six consecutive games; marking the first stretch of five or more games since 2010 and the first in the BBCOR (2011-present) era. Steele Walker hit two vs. TCU (4/8) and Little Rock (4/10) as the Sooners matched their season-high with three. Oklahoma added two more vs. Oral Roberts (4/11) and another Walker home run vs. Texas (4/13). The Sooners homered eight times during their series at Kansas, hitting four long balls in Sunday s win at Kansas (5/19). Walker and Cade Cavalli each homered twice at KU. 11-Hit Weekend... Steele Walker hit.688 (11-for-16) at Texas Tech (4/20-22). He notched at least three hits in every game; matching his careerhigh with four twice. Walker is a career.512 (22-for-43) hitter against the Red Raiders. In game two, he homered and doubled in a 4-for-5, two-rbi performance. In the finale, Walker went 4-for-6 against a variety of Tech defensive shifts. Walker owned a.706 on-base percentage and slugged for an astounding OPS. Friday Ace... Jake Irvin has started all 14 series openers for Oklahoma this season and 10 of 12 weekend game ones as a sophomore in He is 12-2 in those 26 starts with 16 starts of six innings or more. When Irvin won the series opener, the Sooners have won 11 of 12 series. When Irvin took a loss, no-decision or did not start game one, OU has won six of 14 series. Free Bases... Cade Harris drew the 100th base on balls of his career vs. Texas (4/15) to become the 14th player in OU history to reach that mark, the first since Casey Bookout ( ). He currently ranks sixth all-time with 118. Harris needs just 11 more walks to move into the top-5 all-time at Oklahoma. Damon Minor ( ) is the program s all-time leader with 139 walks. Harris 58 walks this year are the third-most OU single-season history. Double Take... As a freshman, Steele Walker was one shy of the Sooner rookie record with 17 doubles. His 14 this season has pushed his career total to 47. Walker cracked the top-20 list in the OU record book vs. Oral Roberts (4/11) and currently ranks 13th all-time. Spring Cleaning... Oklahoma has sweep three Big 12 series this season (West Virginia, at TCU and Kansas State), marking the first time the Sooners have accomplished that feat since OU brought out the brooms on back-to-back weekends to start conference play with sweeps of West Virginia and Baylor. The Sooners swept backto-back three-game conference series for the first time since beating Missouri and winning at Texas Tech in Overall, OU moved to 8-0 in the Big 12 for the first time in the 22-year history of the league and to start conference play since 1984 in the Big Eight following two wins at TCU. OU outscored K-State, Turn Down the Horns... Oklahoma salvaged its series with Texas (4/15) behind sophomore right-hander Nathan Wiles 7.2-scoreless innings. The Sooners 6-0 win marked their first shutout of the Longhorns since March 16, Wiles was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week (4/16) after scattering five hits and issuing just one walk, which came in his final inning of work.. MLB Opening Day Starters... Brewers RHP Chase Anderson ( ), Rockies RHP Jon Gray ( ) and Angels RHP Garrett Richards ( ) represented the Sooners as MLB opening day starters for their respective teams. The University of Oklahoma is the first college to have three alumni start at pitcher on MLB s opening day in recorded history. Steele Walker surpassed 100 RBI and runs for his career against West Virginia (3/23). He became the first OU player to reach 100 in each category since Sheldon Neuse ( ). Beginning with Jackson Williams ( ), seven Sooners reached the milestone over the next seven years. Walker is just the second to do so playing his entire career in the BBCOR era. All-time, 40 players have reached the 100-run, 100-RBI mark as a Sooner. The first to do so was Keith Drumright ( ) with 147 runs and 114 RBI. Walker s former teammates Austin O Brien ( ) and Hunter Haley ( ) were the most recent Sooners to approach the mark. O Brien finished his career with 98 RBI and 95 runs, while Haley finished with 99 RBI and 98 runs. Both O Brien (UCL) and Haley (wrist) suffered major injuries as seniors.

The Sooners have started Cade Harris, Kyler Murray and Steele Walker from left to right in the outfield in 44 games this season and all but three since opening weekend. The unit s total starts together surpassed the Walker-Ben Hollas-Blake Brewster unit s 15 from last year. Beginning with opening day 2014 through the 2015 Big 12 Championship, Hunter Haley-Craig Aikin- Taylor Alspaugh patrolled the Sooner outfield together for 82 games. Walker, who has started all but two games in his entire career at OU, is the only true outfielder of the group. Harris moved to left field last season to solidify a position that had been started by six different players, including 14 starts by Murray, until Harris started the last 17 games of the season. Murray, a high school All- American middle infielder, did not play in the outfield until 2017 and had previously not played baseball in the spring of Deep Threat in Center or Under Center... Sooner quarterback and outfielder Kyler Murray has made the adjustment to center field in his second year on the diamond.
