Oklahoma baseball hits the road for its first away midweek game of the season against No. 4 TCU in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm from Lupton Stadium. About the Sooners... Fresh off a series win over No. 10 Texas Tech, the Sooners are 17-9 overall with a 2-1 Big 12 record and received votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Oklahoma features.300-plus hitters one through five in its lineup, led by junior center fielder Craig Aikin (.352). The Sooners leadoff hitter moved to the three-hole the last two games. He leads the Big 12 with 25 runs scored. A fraction behind is junior Kolbey Carpenter (.352), who, like classmate Anthony Hermelyn (.303), has started at three different positions this season. Carpenter is slugging a team-high.604 with five home runs and 19 RBI, while Hermelyn has doubled seven times and knocked in 18 runs. Redshirt-senior right fielder Taylor Alspaugh (.304) is coming off a four-hit day and has scored and driven in 16 runs. Releases, statistics and schedule updates can be found at SoonerSports.com HEAD COACH PETE HUGHES Pete Hughes was named the ninth head baseball coach in program history on June 27, Twice named both the New England Coach of the Year and the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, as well as the 2000 American Baseball Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year, Hughes owns a well-deserved reputation for setting new standards of excellence at every stop during his 17-year coaching career. Hughes recorded five straight 30-win seasons at Virginia Tech, including a pair of 40-win campaigns that culminated with NCAA Tournament berths in 2010 and He inherited a club that hadn t reached the NCAA Tournament since 2000 and went on to compile a (.561) record in seven seasons with the Hokies from In 18 seasons as a head coach, Hughes owns a career record of (.572), including his stints at Boston College ( ) and Trinity University ( ). Hughes graduated from Davidson College in 1990 where he played third base on the baseball team and quarterback for the Wildcats football team. At 17-4 this season and 4-2 in the Big 12, the Horned Frogs designated hitter Cody Jones leads the team with a.370 batting average and.506 slugging percentage. TCU s catcher, Evan Skoug holds the team-high with 14 RBI and three homeruns. On the mound, head coach Jim Schlossnagle, who guided his squad to the College World Series in 2014, turns to left-hander Tyler Alexander (1-1). Alexander, the Frogs Sunday starter a year ago, has started four games this season to the tune of a 3.48 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 20.2 innings. Last Time They Met... It was Alexander that locked up the series win for TCU in Fort Worth last season. He tossed eight innings of one-run ball to pick up his seventh win of the season; a 9-1 decision for the Horned Frogs. TCU put up a four-spot on Adam Choplick in the second and added five against Robert Tasin in the fourth. The lone Sooner run came off a solo home run by Neuse in the fourth. All-Time vs. TCU... Oklahoma leads the series against TCU with game record, which started in 1974 with a 12-8 Sooner win. Last year, OU went 2-2 in the regular season, including a 9-5 win at home in a non-conference tilt. Big 12 Openers... The Sooners are 9-10 in the first Big 12 match-up of the season after a 6-1 loss to Texas Tech (3/20/14). OU has won four of its last six conference openers. Oklahoma won its first Big 12 game in the league opener vs. Iowa State on March 7, 1997; 7-4. For the Record... Single to center, single down the left field line, F7, single up the middle, three-run home run to right, double to right-center, infield-single to second. That was Aikin s record-setting day with a schoolrecord six hits as he went 6-for-7 with four runs and six RBI in a 22-0 win over Arkansas-Little Rock (3/3). The Sooner pitching staff leads the Big 12 with 241 strikeouts; averaging a league-best 9.27 per nine innings, which is 0.79 more per nine than the next closest team. Sophomore RHP Alec Hansen struck out 10 vs. Texas Tech (3/22) and leads all Big 12 pitchers with 47. Tied for third in the league is Jake Elliott at 37. Carpenter earned Big 12 and national recognition following an 8-for-17 week with three home runs. He was named the Big 12 Player of the Week and the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball News on February 23. Carpenter is the second Sooner to earn the national award; first won by Mac James in Carpenter added a second Big 12 award on March 23 after going 5-for-11 in the Texas Tech series with a 4-for-4 day and decisive, three-run home run in game two. Complete Effort... Hansen tossed the first complete game of his career, at any level, against No. 10 Texas Tech (3/21). He struck out 10 and surrendered only three hits, while working through a choppy fifth after four, nohit innings to start the day. Hansen flashed a fastball at 101 MPH in the third and sustained a 97 MPH heater through the ninth. His complete game was the first by a Sooner since Jonathan Gray vs. Coastal Carolina (5/31/13) in the NCAA Blacksburg Regional. Neuse Statement Heard... Neuse claimed the Sooner s third weekly award from the Big 12 after being name the Player of the Week (3/9). He hit.688 (11-for-16) with a slugging and.722 on-base percentage. Neuse homered three times, drove in 10 runs and scored with over a fourgame stretch at home. He posted a perfect 4-for-4 day with a home run and a double against Purdue (3/7). As a freshman, Neuse was twice selected as the Big 12 Rookie of the Week in Hits by Pitchers... Redshirt-senior Robert Tasin made 37 appearances on the mound, including five starts, in his first two seasons with OU. This year, he has pitched in nine games with two starts to a 4-1 record, 1.07 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 25.1 innings. To add depth to the Sooner bench and lineup from the left side of the plate, Tasin picked up a bat this offseason and is currently hitting.273 (9-for-33) with two RBI and seven starts at DH. Junior Jacob Evans has also stepped to the plate for five at-bats this season and has two hits with two RBI. Fresh Records... Neuse set an OU freshman record with seven triples and was second with 27 walks behind Aikin s 32 set in He also earned top-five finishes in home runs (7), hits (73), runs (43) and RBI (47) by a Sooner freshman. Putting the Ball in Play... Oklahoma led the Big 12 in fewest strikeouts per game in 2014 at Once again, the Sooners are at the top of the league; striking out at a rate of 5.19 per game. Turning Two... The Sooners rank sixth in the country and second in the Big 12 with 27 double plays turned; averaging 1.04 per game. Oklahoma turned a season-high four vs. BYU (2/28). In 2014, OU turned just 28, averaging 0.48 per game. Utility Blue Print... Junior Kolbey Carpenter has been a steady performer in two-plus seasons at OU. Junior Anthony Hermelyn has seen a drastic change in his responsibilities from his freshman season when he started 48 games behind the dish. As a sophomore he split time between catcher and first base. This season he has added third base to his defensive duties as he earned starts at all three positions opening weekend. Opening the Gates... Oklahoma s opening weekend attendance set a record for the first series of the season at 4,181. In 2014 vs. Seton Hall 3,754 fans passed through the gates; now ranked third all-time. The previous record was set in 2011 when 4,117 saw the Sooners face William & Mary, the season after reaching the 2010 College World Series. The singlegame attendance record on opening day was set after the 1994 CWS National Championship team returned home to face Missouri Southern in front of a crowd of 2,183 in Opening Day Starter... Sophomore Jake Elliott became the first righty to start opening day for Oklahoma since Michael Rocha in He is also the third sophomore to earn the nod in the last four year after Jacob Evans (2014) and Dillon Overton (2012). On the Hill... The OU pitching staff was tasked with replacing nearly 60% of its innings pitched from 2013 after losing five pitchers to the draft. This season, the Sooners return 74% of innings pitched from a year ago. Aikin has started all 26 games in center field; the only Sooner to start every game at the same position. Je was the OU center fielder in 57 out of 58 games in First Time Foes... SIUE was the first of four opponents on the schedule that Oklahoma has never played before. The Sooners has also taken on Utah and Purdue for the first time, amassing a record of 5-1 against first-time opponents. OU will also take on Alcorn State for the first time later this season. Preseason Poll... Oklahoma landed fifth in the 2015 Big 12 Preseason Poll as voted on by the league s coaches for the second straight season. The Sooners received 38 points in the poll. TCU (64) was the unanimous No. 1 pick followed by Texas (55), Oklahoma State (47) and Texas Tech (46). MLB Draft Picks... Last June, Oklahoma had four players selected in the draft. Mac James was selected in the sixth round and signed by the Tampa Bay Rays. Connor Buchmann went to the New York Mets in the 11th round and Hector Lorenzana was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 37th. Choplick returned to OU after being drafted in the 32nd by the Chicago White Sox. Pack The Dale... Oklahoma set a series record in attendance vs. Texas (4/11-13/14) with a three-game total of 7,269. The previous high was 6,689 against Texas in On April 12, the Sooners hosted the second largest crowd in program history with 4,102 in attendance. Oklahoma had 16 four-figure attendance home games and averaged 1,114 per game. Crooked Numbers... On the scoreboard, Oklahoma put up two or more runs in an inning 41 times and three-or-more 28 times in Opponents have posted a crooked number only 20 times and have scored three-or-more just nine times. The Sooners have scored a season-high five runs in an inning three times. Lineup on Shuffle... In 2014, Oklahoma did not repeat a lineup until the 14th game of the season. The Sooners used 35 different starting lineups a year ago. This season, OU has rolled out 18 different lineups in 26 games. Shave for the Brave... On April 3, 2014, OU held its Shave for the Brave event to join the fight against childhood cancer. The Sooners, with a goal of $20,000, raised over $29,000 through the Vs. Cancer Foundation to raise money for cancer research. Half of the money donated will be dedicated to the OU Children s Hospital. The event also served as an opportunity for the Sooners in their countdown to 19 Ways.
