The action gets underway when the Sooners face Citadel on Friday at 11:00 am. OU then plays the host Golden Knights on Saturday at 5:00 pm and Ohio State on Sunday at 9:00 am. About the Sooners... Oklahoma is 4-1 following its season-opening homestand. As a team, the Sooners are hitting.335 and outscoring opponents, Junior catcher Mac James is hitting a team-high.533 (8-for-15) with six RBI, five runs and three RBI. Sophomore left fielder Hunter Haley is hitting.313 with a.875 slugging percentage with three home runs and a team-leading 10 RBI. Nine OU hitters are batting.300 or better with at least 10 at-bats. The Sooner pitching staff owns a 2.66 earned run average, led by a bullpen that has a combined 2.25 ERA. Sophomore left-hander Jacob Evans is expected to start on Friday night. The Sooners totaled 30 hits and 27 runs in a midweek sweep of Arkansas Pine Bluff by scores of 16-6 and Haley homered twice and drove in a career-high six runs in the win on Tuesday. On Wednesday, seven OU pitchers combined for the shutout and totaled 11 strikeouts, while surrendering zero walks. Freshman infielder Sheldon Neuse combined to hit 4-for-6 with a home run, four RBI and three runs in the two games. James went 4-for-7 with four RBI, three runs and three doubles. Releases, statistics and schedule updates can be found at SoonerSports.com HEAD COACH PETE HUGHES Pete Hughes was named the ninth head baseball coach in program history on June 27, Twice named both the New England Coach of the Year and the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, as well as the 2000 American Baseball Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year, Hughes owns a well-deserved reputation for setting new standards of excellence at every stop during his 17-year coaching career. Hughes recorded five straight 30-win seasons at Virginia Tech, including a pair of 40-win campaigns that culminated with NCAA Tournament berths in 2010 and He inherited a club that hadn t reached the NCAA Tournament since 2000 and went on to compile a (.561) record in seven seasons with the Hokies from In 17 seasons as a head coach, Hughes owns a career record of (.576), including his stints at Boston College ( ) and Trinity University ( ). Hughes graduated from Davidson College in 1990 where he played third base on the baseball team and quarterback for the Wildcats football team. UCF opened the season with three wins over Siena before falling to Florida on Tuesday night. Righty Spencer Davis owns a 1-0 record and 3.60 ERA with four strikeouts in five innings pitched. Scouting the Buckeyes... Ohio State got off to a quick start with wins over Connecticut and Auburn but evened its record at 2-2 with a pair of losses to Indiana State. Outfielder Tim Wetzel is hitting.364 (4-for-11) with three doubles and three RBI. The Buckeyes are hitting just.235 as a team through their first four games. Left-hander Zach Farmer took the loss on Saturday and is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA. Opening the Gates... Oklahoma s seasonopening series against Seton Hall was the second highest opening weekend attendance total in program history as 3,754 fans passed through the gates. The previous record was set in 2011 when 4,117 saw the Sooners face William & Mary, the season after reaching the 2010 College World Series. The single-game attendance record on opening day was set after the 1994 CWS National Championship team returned home to face Missouri Southern in front of a crowd of 2,183 in Who s on First?... In the first week of action, the Sooners started three different first basemen. Freshman Niko Buentello made his debut anchoring first on opening day before seeing action at the DH spot in the next two games. Junior utility man Keach Ballard appeared at first in game two and Hermelyn, who started 48 games at catcher in 2013, made his first collegiate start at first on Sunday. Freshman Austin O Brien became the fourth Sooner at first base with a late-inning appearance against Arkansas Pine Bluff on February 18. Crooked Numbers... Through the first five games, Oklahoma has put up two or more runs in an inning 14 times and three or more 11 times. In game one against Arkansas Pine Bluff, the Sooners set a season-high with seven runs in the first inning. Up Next... The OU pitching staff looks to replace nearly 60% of its innings pitched from 2013 after losing five pitchers to the draft. Coach Hughes brings to Norman a completely new coaching staff, which includes two assistants with Division I head coaching experience. Former Nebraska head coach, Mike Anderson brings Omaha-level experience as the hitting coach, while former Bryant and William & Mary skipper Jamie Pinzino takes over as the pitching coach after reaching a NCAA Regional final in Ryan Connolly joins the staff as the volunteer assistant after a oneyear stint as an assistant at Radford.
