Friday s tilt with the Roadrunners (7-5) will be played under the lights at 6:30 p.m., while Saturday s game is set for a 2 p.m. start, with Sunday s finale slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch. Friday s contest will be the second night game of the year for the Red Raiders (12-2). The first came on Tuesday night in the form of the first top-10 matchup in Lubbock since March 28-30, 1997, back when the No. 9 Red Raiders took two of three from No. 10 Oklahoma State. On Tuesday, No. 6 Tech hosted No. 4 Arizona and ran past the Wildcats after scoring in five consecutive innings for a 13-1 victory. It was the first top-five win for the Red Raiders at Rip Griffin Park since a 5-1 defeat of No. 2 TCU on April 3, Arizona was ranked fourth by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and appeared at No. 1 in the first NCAA RPI poll of the season. Not only was Tuesday s contest a billing of top-10 teams, but was also a battle of 2016 College World Series teams, as Tech and the Wildcats were on opposite sides of last year s Omaha bracket. Tuesday s win was the third-straight top-10 victory for the Red Raiders, who took down No. 8 Ole Miss, 5-1, and No. 2 LSU, 5-4, last weekend at the 2017 Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic. It was the first time Tech has posted three consecutive wins over top-10 teams since 2014, when the Red Raiders won three-straight against No. 3 Indiana. The Red Raiders and the Roadrunners have met eight times in the two program s histories, as Tech holds the overall advantage at 7-1. The first two meetings came in Lubbock in 2000, when Tech defeated UTSA, 8-6 and It was also the last time the two met in west Texas. In 2011, the Red Raiders picked up a two-game series sweep with scores of 8-2 and 11-6 in San Angelo, the last time the two programs squared off. The 2017 season marks the fifth-year head coach Tim Tadlock, who sits at all-time as the head coach of his alma mater. Tadlock s Red Raiders picked up win No. 150 on Feb. 17 in a 15-1 rout of Western Illinois in Starkville, Mississippi. He is the fastest coach in school history to reach the milestone. With a 12-2 start to the season, the Red Raiders have found their way into the top-10 of four different polls, moving up in five from last week s rankings. For the fourth-straight week, D1 Baseball has Tech ranked highest among the six publications at No. 6. Perfect Game (No. 8), the USA Today Coaches Poll (No. 9) and the National College Baseball Writers Association (No. 9) all have the Red Raiders inside the top-10 of their respective polls. Rounding out the other publications are Collegiate Baseball at No. 12 and Baseball America at No. 14. The Red Raiders have been ranked inside the top six in each of the last two seasons. Tech s pitching staff was outstanding yet again, allowing only one run for the fifth time in It was the 10th time this year two or fewer runs have been scored on the Red Raiders, as Arizona stranded 13 on the base path. The Red Raider bats exploded for 13 runs on Tuesday against the Wildcats, making it the fifth time this season to score 10 or more runs in a game. Nine different Red Raiders recorded a hit in the contest, as four put up multi-hit performances. The Red Raiders began the year ranked as high as No. 14 by D1 Baseball, with the other four polls checking in at: No. 17 (National College Baseball Writers Association), No. 19 (USA Today Coaches Poll), No. 25 (Baseball America) and No. 29 (Collegiate Baseball). After going 3-1 last week to improve to 11-2 on the season, Tech moved up in five of the six national rankings. The Red Raiders moved up four spots to No. 6 in D1 Baseball s poll, its highest ranking of the year. D1 Baseball was the only poll to have Tech in the top-10 last week. This week, four polls have the Red Raiders inside the top-10. Perfect Game ranks Tech at No. 8, while the USA Today Coaches Poll and the NCBWA placed the Red Raiders at No. 9. Tech also moved up in Baseball America s poll to No. 14, while standing pat at Collegiate Baseball s rankings at No. 12. This is the third-straight year where the Red Raiders have started their season ranked in a preseason poll. It is the third consecutive week Tech has climbed in at least four publication s rankings. THE BEARDED WONDER Senior infielder Hunter Hargrove has seen the ball as well as anyone in the country over the first three weeks of the year, racking up 22 hits and four walks for a.379 average. Included in his 22 hits are seven doubles, one triple and three homers, while driving in 17 RBI. Put together a.444/.944/.474 line after first four games of the year. Went 4-for-5 in the season opener, with two doubles, one single and a home run, falling just a triple shy of the cycle. Came one hit away from the cycle again against Cal, hitting a grand slam, a triple and a single on Feb. 26 in a 3-for-5 day. Reached base safely in half of his at-bats a week ago - eight hits and two walks over 20 at-bats. His three homers include a solo shot, a two-run homer and a grand slam. Only Red Raider to have a hit in every game this season - set a career-high with his current 14-game hitting streak. Set career-high for hits in a game, passing previous high of 3. First to have four or more hits in a game since Tyler Neslony on March 24, 2015, at No. 28 San Diego State. Notched a career-high for RBI twice already this season, the latest a six RBI performance against Cal on Feb. 26 as all three hits in the series finale against the Golden Bears produced an RBI. Leads Big 12 in RBI Ranks 11th in the NCAA in both doubles and total bases Was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Feb. 21. GING PUTTIN IT DOWN FOR CALIFORN-I-A Sophomore left-handed pitcher Steven Gingery has had a terrific start to the 2017 season, improving to 3-0 after going a career-high 8.0 innings against No. 8 Ole Miss at the Shriners College Classic. Tossed at least 7.0 innings in all three starts, matching career-highs in the first two outings against Mississippi State & Cal before passing it with 8.0 against the Rebels. Struck out at least seven hitters in all three outings, punching out eight against the Bulldogs and Rebels Leads the team with 23 strikeouts, allowing just five walks. Allowed only one run in each start, giving him a 1.23 ERA Tech has scored five runs in all three of Gingery s outings in 2017 Ranks second in the NCAA and first in the Big 12 in wins (3). Named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 27. GARDNER HEATING UP After a rough and unlucky start to the season, junior outfielder Tanner Gardner is starting to get hits to fall, as he racked up six hits over the four games last week. Putting together a.375 average last week, Gardner notched a career-high four RBI off a pair of two-rbi singles against No. 8 Ole Miss on Saturday, as he was responsible for four of Tech s five runs in the contest. On Sunday, Gardner added another multi-hit day, moving his season-total to three, including the walk-off infield single to take down the No. 2 Tigers, 5-4. He added two more hits on Tuesday night against No. 4 Arizona, going 2-for-3 with three runs and two walks, one intentional. Texas Tech senior infielder Hunter Hargrove kicked off 2017 with a bang, putting together a.379 average with 22 hits and 17 RBI. 3 THRICE AS NICE Tech s last three wins have come against top-10 teams, taking down No. 8 Ole Miss and No. 2 LSU at the 2017 Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic last weekend, while throttling No. 4 Arizona, 13-1, on Tuesday. It s the first time since 2015 the Red Raiders have won three-straight against top-10 teams since Tech took the final three games against No. 3 Indiana to open the 2014 campaign. STRAIGHT FILTH This weekend s rotation has gone a combined 5-1 this season, as Tech has won eight of the nine starts between the trio of sophomores. The three have totaled 55 strikeouts, while walking only nine batters. Davis Martin has the best ratio, striking out 13 and giving up only one walk, while Steven Gingery has the most strikeouts overall with 23. Ryan Shetter trails Gingery by four K s, but has the most in a game by a Red Raider this year, when he smoked 10 Cal hitters on Feb. 25. HERO BALL Gardner s walk-off single was the second for the Red Raiders this season. In the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and two outs, Gardner drove a 1-2 pitch back to the pitcher, who stuck his foot out to try to stop the screaming ball. However, the ball richocheted away from the mound and out to third, allowing Gardner to reach safely and Cody Farhat to score to complete the comeback victory over the Tigers. The weekend before, freshman catcher Michael Berglund delivered the game-winning hit in the 11th inning against Cal on Feb. 25, as he shot a single to right field, scoring Grant Little from second for the win. LIVE LONG AND PROSPER Senior outfielder Ryan Long quietly put together a six-game hitting streak, coming one game shy of a career-best, with two multi-hit performances sandwiched in the middle coming in the doubleheader against Cal two weeks ago. After sitting the first two games of the season, Long came in and immediately made an impact, racking up three hits, two RBI and two runs against Western Illinois his first start of the year. It was the first of four multi-rbi performances for the Crandall, Texas, native, which is tied for the team lead. In a pinch-hitting perfromance on Tuesday, Long laced a two-out single to left field, scoring two to give Tech a 7-2 lead over the Lobos. In 10 games, he s hitting.419 with 13 hits, including two homers, one hit on the first pitch he saw against LSU on March 5 to tie the game at 1 in the second inning. BECK AND CALL Junior outfielder Connor Beck has made only five starts, but has racked up 10 hits in 21 at-bats, reaching base safely in 13 appearances at the plate via a walk and two hit-by-pitches. Beck has four multi-hit games this season, including a three-hit performance against LSU on March 5 with a double and two singles. He drove in two runs and scored another on Tuesday night against the Wildcats. SOPHOMORE (AND FRESHMAN) EXTRAVAGANZA Tech s five starters this season have been comprised of four sophomores: Davis Martin, Steven Gingery, Ryan Shetter and Erikson Lanning, who all saw action in postseason play last year, and one freshman in John Henry Gonzalez. Three picked up victories, while the other two put the Red Raiders in position for the bullpen to come in and finish the job. All five starters have gone at 5.0 innings at least once, including two 7.0 inning performances and an 8.0 inning gem. Only one starter gave up two runs, while the other four allowed just one in their first five starts. Gonzalez, who started on Tuesday against New Mexico, went 4.0 innings but left the game with a 5-2 lead after three scoreless frames. Martin leads the Big 12 and ranks 18th in the NCAA with a 13:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio NEWCOMER IMPACT Eight newcomers, including five Red Raider freshmen have earned starts for Texas Tech this season and made a signifcant impact to the lineup: Grant Little & Josh Jung both have double-digit hit totals with 13 & 10, respectively. Zach Rheams smacked a solo dinger in the 5th inning against Cal in Saturday s game two doubleheader. Rheams has reached base safely in 10 consecutive games this season. Michael Berglund recorded the walk-off single in that game, scoring Little from second. Jose Quezada struck out five of six batters faced against Cal on Feb. 25. John McMillon picked up his first win against No. 2 LSU on March 5. In his first game and start, Brian Klein roped a double into right-center field TEAM BREAKDOWN Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock returns 17 letterwinners from last year s squad, while welcoming 16 newcomers, which includes a mix of freshmen and transfers, to this year s group. The Red Raiders are comprised of four seniors, nine juniors, eight sophomores and 12 freshmen. Tech returns five position starters from the 2016 team, including: Outfielder Tanner Gardner, second baseman Michael Davis, shortstop Orlando Garcia, and Hunter Hargrove & Ryan Long, who split time at third base. The Red Raiders also bring back seven pitchers from last season, which are comprised of five sophomores and two juniors. Included in the returning class is an All-American (Tanner Gardner), three Freshman All-Americans (Davis Martin , Steven Gingery , Dylan Dusek ) and four All-Big 12 honorees (Gardner, Gingery, Martin & Michael Davis). ANOTHER STRONG SCHEDULE AWAITS The 2017 schedule includes another strong slate of 56 games the Red Raiders will navigate through this season. Within the first month, Tech will face four top-25 opponents, beginning with its second road trip of the season. At the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic, hosted by the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park, the Red Raiders will take on No. 20 Texas A&M, No. 22 Ole Miss and No. 2 LSU. Tech will then return home to for a midweek battle with 2016 NCAA runner-up Arizona on March 7, who is ranked No. 7 in the preseason poll. Three conference foes also appear in select preseason polls in Texas (March 17-19), Oklahoma State (April 21-23) and TCU (April 28-30). After the opening weekend, Tech will welcome in New Mexico State for the home opener on Feb. 21, followed by a four-game set with California and a midweek matchup with New Mexico. After the Arizona contest, the Red Raiders will host UTSA on March at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. Over spring break, Tech will take on UT Arlington at Globe Life Park, before opening up Big 12 play at Texas on March The Red Raiders will be away the next two weekends at Wichita State (March 24-26) and Oklahoma (March 31-April 2), with home midweek series against UNLV and Texas Southern sandwiched in between both. Tech will then return home for a four-game stretch April 7-11 with games against Baylor and New Mexico. The Red Raiders hit the road again shortly after to play Kansas State April 13-15, followed by New Mexico State in Midland on April 18. Tech s next two away series are two-game pieces against New Mexico (April 25-26) and Ohio State (May 2-3), before finishing up the regular season road slate at West Virginia on May 5-7. Texas Tech junior outfielder Tanner Gardner hit.375 last week, with six hits against the likes of New Mexico, Ole Miss and LSU. Gardner racked up a pair of two-rbi singles against the Rebels and posted the walk-off single against the Tigers to complete the 2-1 weekend at the Shriners College Classic. Tadlock will enter his 25th year in collegiate baseball in He owns a collegiate career record of in 12 years as a head coach with nine seasons at Grayson County College ( ) and three at Texas Tech (149-95). The Red Raiders posted their second 45+ win season under Tadlock in 2016, going overall, the third-most wins in the program record books. Tech earned its fifth conference title in school history after tallying a 19-5 Big 12 mark and advanced to the College World Series for the second time in three years. In Omaha, the Red Raiders recorded their first CWS victory in Tech history after defeating No. 1 Florida, 3-2, in an elimination game. For the first time in program history, the Red Raiders were awarded a national seed for the NCAA Tournament, checking in at No. 5 to set up Lubbock Regional action at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. A two-run double and a walk-off pickoff helped Tech move past Dallas Baptist and welcome in East Carolina for Super Regional play. After a 13-inning thriller in game two, the Red Raiders ran past ECU with an 11-0 victory in a record crowd of 4,817 in the finale to punch their ticket to Omaha. Facing elimination, Tech turned in a strong performance against the top-ranked team in the country, Florida, and picked up a 3-2 win for Tech s first-ever victory at the College World Series. The Red Raiders ended the year ranked fourth in the final poll of the 2016 season, their highest ever in program history. Tadlock and the Red Raiders completed the biggest turnaround in school history and the second biggest turnaround in Big 12 history, going from 26 wins in 2013 to 45 wins in The season culminated with Texas Tech s first trip to the College World Series in Omaha. Tadlock was named the ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year as well as the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year while guiding the Red Raiders to their best season in school history with a overall mark and Big 12 record. Tech posted just the sixth 40-win regular season in school history while claiming its first-ever NCAA Regional title at the Coral Gables Regional hosted by No. 3 nationally-ranked Miami (Fla.). Tech won the regional with three wins, two of them coming against Miami on its home field. Tech finished overall in Tadlock s third season in 2015, marking the first time since where the Red Raiders have posted consecutive 30-win seasons. The Red Raiders completed Big 12 play at overall, securing a tie for third place in the conference standings, Tech s highest finish since the 2004 season. It was also the second-straight season where Tech has finished among the top four in the Big 12 standings, a first for the Red Raiders since the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Tadlock returned to his alma mater for the 2012 season as the program s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator following six successful seasons as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma. Tadlock produced several of the nation s top recruiting classes while an assistant coach at Oklahoma, helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College ( ) for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs ( ).
