Girl s Windmill Pitching Volume 335 July 20, 2011 Heading South I can hardly wait for this Thursday. Why, you may ask...because it s the only day of the week that starts with a Th? Nope! Because it s my normal day off from lessons? Nope! Okay, stop the guessing game. You ll never get it. It s because my honey and I leave for Raleigh when she gets off work and what does Raleigh mean? Enough with the questions! Typing questions marks makes my head hurt. This weekend is the Cardinal Classic Showcase in Raleigh, NC. This is one of the pre-eminent college showcases in the south and draws a very good number of southern college coaches. I get another opportunity to work with the Morris County Belles 18U team, get to renew some old acquaintances like Charlie Dobbins, Head Coach of Peace College and currently on farewell tour with The King and his Court. He arrived back in Raleigh last Friday and we should meet up there. Of course I also get some Carolina Barbeque. My wife still can t understand the idea of putting cole slaw on a pulled pork sandwich. It s a tradition. It s part of the way of life. No self-respecting North Carolina denizen would dare eat the sandwich naked (sans cole slaw). Come on, y all! I have some history with the Classic. When I was coaching before, we used to attend the tournament which was developed by Ray Chandler, the longtime coach and head of the North Carolina Cardinal organization. Ray passed away but his name will always be a part of the organization. The tournament has always been a top notch, well run event that draws very good teams and when I was going if you needed Ray he was there. I would think the organization would keep up the same tradition and fine work that Ray started. I actually found out about the Cardinal Classic when we had Riviera Beach Spirit 18U down in Raleigh for the Pony Nationals. Paul Wetmore of Liberty University told me that he was at the Cardinal Classic watching some recruits and EJ and I decided to ride over to the complex and watch being the National hadn t started yet. We met up with Paul and watched with him as he was considering a recruit for shortstop. We liked what we saw of the tournament, definitely liked the Walnut Creek Complex and decided we wanted to go and did.

We did something very dumb the first year and I use it to try and teach others what not to do, based on my experience. We were scheduled for a 9:00 pm game Friday night so we all drove down Friday. We got there in time to get out of the vehicles, warm up and play. We got stomped! That is why I always advise parents if they have trips of 3 hours or so, go down the night before the tournament and make sure the girls are well rested. Don t go for that they can sleep in the car. It isn t the same and their play will suffer. Thankfully, some have listened to and heeded that advice. You can ask Jan Greenhawk who is the head coach of the Maryland Magic/Wagner s 12U team. She will tell you she believes it and has done it since the time her daughter Cassie played for us. The area around Raleigh/Cary is nice and Walnut Creek Softball Complex is one of the prettiest and most well kept I have seen. The outfield is Bermuda Grass and gives the feel of plush carpet. Fields are well maintained and when I have been there, if it rained, they would have the fields ready in a couple of hours after the rain stops. They would get out there with leaf blowers and spread the puddles, use whatever dryer was necessary and get the job done. I assume that hasn t changed. Of course on Friday we are at Buffalo Road Complex at 7:30 and our first game Saturday (3:00) is at NCSU. Then we do 6:00 and 7:30 on field 1 at Walnut Creek and finish on field 2 Sunday morning at 9:45. The competition is top notch and the college coach draw is equally top notch. If you want to go to school in the south, this is one of the showcases you should attend. Ample parking is another selling point for the Classic. While I have been to showcases across the country and some of those draw more coaches, this tournament draws a good mixture of D-I, D-II, D-III, JUCO and NAIA schools. The complex is developed in the wheel hub concept used by many nowadays. The concession/tower area is surrounded by fields, and then just down a path there is another concession stand as the central point for additional fields. I am traveling and working quite a bit with the Morris County Belles the balance of the summer season and this fall, and look forward to the tournaments and the team and almost as much as that, I look forward to the venues we will play. Few though will compare with what I remember about the Cardinal Classic and of course Nick Frungillo or (Mr. President) as he likes for his lovely wife Mimi to call him may get to meet some new college coaches as he works his magic expounding on the many talents of the young ladies in the Belles organization. I just saw the schedule for the Classic. We have Richmond Storm Friday night. We have the Carolina Cardinals, Raiders Elite and Maryland Chill Saturday. On Sunday we have PA Intensity. I used to do clinics for the Intensity 14U when Liz Mack, Clarissa Throckmorton, Lauren Walker and the Brehm twins were there. I see the Brehm girls are there and Alyssa Dixon is there too. It will be nice to see them. So the time is getting close. I ve got to practice my southern drawl. I have to let some people know that I m coming. I have to pack. I have to charge up the radar gun. I have to charge the camera batteries. I have to wash the jeep. I have to mow the lawn. I have a lot to do and little time to do it...or I could just let Cheryl do it. :-)

Tips How are you dealing with the heat? Do you know the no no s of hydration? No to soft drinks of any kind during, before, or between games. The exception may be if you have several hours before the next game. Stick with sports drinks or water. Water is best for hydration but not everyone likes water. Sports drinks are the next best thing but realize many are loaded with sugar and that can be a problem. With a little research you can find non-sugar sports drinks. The good thing is you can quickly replentish carbohydrates and that is necessary for the active player. If you find drinks that combine carbs with protein, even better. When used in moderation and in the proper situation which is after 45 minutes of fast-paced activity, it should not adversely affect the very active athlete. However, if you are not extremely active...go with the water. Girl s Windmill Pitching Website My website, though still undergoing enhancements, is now active. Maryland STARS Tryouts Tryouts for the 2011/2012 Maryland STARS Teams are scheduled as follows: Players who cannot make these dates and times should contact the Maryland STARS director and set up an individual tryout such that it is completed prior to the scheduled tryout dates. All players must tryout. All roster spots are open to new and current players. Players should try to make both tryout dates. If they can only make one, please insure the STARS know in advance. 8 14U 8/14 2:00PM - 5:00PM 16U and 18U 8/21 10:00AM-2:00PM Any player who missed any of the earlier tryouts -- assuming roster openings still exist 8/21 2:00PM - 5:00PM 16U and 18U Directions to fields can be found here. If you cannot make the specified times, please contact the STARS immediately and an individual tryout can be arranged. Age cutoff is 12/31/2011. Example: if a player is 12 or younger on 12/31/2011 she can play 12&under for the 2011/2012 season even if she turns 13 as early as 1/1/2012. For more information on tryouts or to schedule an individual tryout, contact the STARS or call Glen Warholic at News and Tournament Results Glen Warholic and the Maryland Stars Organization had to turn teams away from their Rec level USSSA Tournament, the Winfield Classic. I recently received this from him: Bill, A little information about the "Grand Daddy of them all Rec caliber team tournament". We had 78 teams this year, breaking the record of 77 set last year. The number by age were 10U U U U U - 12 We turned teams away at 10, 12, and 14U because we just did not have fields and umpires to accommodate them all. As it was we had to staff the CCSC with umpires from PA as we ran out of MD umpires. So for any of those people out there propagating the story that softball is dwindling in numbers, just check out these numbers.

We ended up using 3 parks, (5 fields), Carroll County Sports Complex (5 fields) and Meadowbrook Park in Howard County (3 fields). Our people worked incredibly hard to pull this off. This was the 15th annual Winfield CLASSiC -- the first one had 7 teams - I have run the last 14 of them. I had several former and current Stars players help as site directors and field maintenance and t-shirts sales. Site directors included Emelie McFarland, Erin Beane, Brad and Stephanie Speierman (Brad and Stephanie had which had an 8 timeslot day on Saturday and 6 on Sunday (super long day both days) and they came through in flying colors). I also had the Grimm family (Lyndsey, Meghan and Madison) helping at the remote sites all day both days. Events like this are a good starting point for most softball players especially at 10 and 12U. It gives the less experienced players a chance to compete on a more balanced playing field and thus give them a great experience with less chance of being demoralized. Glen Warholic I also got this article submitted by Glen. This makes my job much easier. Maryland STARS 12U Team Crowned ASA State Champions The Maryland STARS 12&Under Girls Fastpitch Softball Team completed a sweep of the ASA State Championship tournament with a 6-0 record and the team was crowned ASA Maryland State champions. The Stars played well as a team throughout the tournament getting good contributions from all of their players. In their first game of the tournament the Stars dominated the Maryland Crush winning the game 10-1 in 4 innings. Christina Toven tossed a complete game 1-hitter against the Crush dominating their hitters with her assortment of pitches. She notched 3 strikeouts. Toven also scored 3 runs and hit a long double to right center field. Jackie Kuwabara went 2 for 3 at the plate. Then in their second game the Stars defeated the Maryland Express 5-2. Jessica Swistock tossed a complete game victory for the Stars. She struggled with her control, but limited the Express to 1 hit over 5 innings and struck out 4 Express hitters. Sydney Ruckel (LF) made a tremendous running backhand catch of a fly ball down the left field line. Paula Ambrose went 2 for 2 at the plate and knocked in 2 runs. In their first game of double elimination play the Stars again defeated the Maryland Crush, but this time is a closely contested 6-5 victory. Both teams tired from a long 12 hour plus day at the softball fields struggled to maintain their focus throughout the game. Toven pitching her second complete game of the day used all she had in the last inning to stymie a late Crush rally and secure the victory for the Stars. Toven struck out 8 Crush hitters and limited them to 4 hits. Toven went 2 for 3 at the plate with 3 RBIs. Swistock, catcher, threw out both runners that attempted to steal bases. Calin Mitchell had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Rebecca Naill scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

Then in the most exciting and closely contested game of the tournament, the Stars narrowly pulled off a 1-0 victory over the Parkville Thunder to send Thunder to the loser s bracket. Toven tossed a brilliant 2-hit shutout and the Stars got great defense out of Swistock (rf) and Bailey Moses (ss) the game ended on an outstanding running catch of a line drive by Swistock who then promptly made an quick accurate throw to Moses stretching to catch the ball at second base before the runner could safely return to complete the double play. Bailey Moses (shortstop), Kuwabara (second base) and Carliana Folfas (centerfield) turned in perfect defensive support of Toven's pitching. The Stars scored the only run of the game when Paula Ambrose doubled down the RF line and then scored on a sharp single to left field by Storm Smith. Next the Stars defeated Terror Fastpitch 10-2 behind the combined pitching efforts of Toven and Swistock for a no hitter. Kuwabara played a stellar second base to lead the Stars defensive support of their pitching. Swistock, Toven, Smith, Folfas and Karly Livermore each collected 2 hits at the plate with Toven, Smith, and Livermore getting a double as one of their hits. Folfas, Swistock, Toven and Smith each scored 2 runs. In the championship game the Stars defeated a tired WHC Fever team (Fever was playing their 5th game of the day) Swistock turned in a gutty performance and pitched a complete game for the Stars and hit a 3-run home run. She permitted only 5 hits and struck out 7 Fever hitters over the course of a complete 7-inning game. Bailey Moses went 4 for 5 and scored 3 runs. Smith went 3 for 4and score 2 runs. Swistock had 2 singles in addition to her home run. Mitchell and Kuwabara collected 3 hits at the plate. Livermore hit a mammoth triple. Defensively the Stars turned in a stellar play when a ball hit over the right fielder's head looked like an apparent home run. However, Ambrose got to the ball, made a perfect throw to second baseman Kuwabara, who threw a strike to catcher Smith who tagged out a surprised Fever base runner at the plate. Moses, shortstop, Swistock, pitcher, Folfas, centerfielder, and Naill left field turned in great defense for the Stars to back Swistock's pitching. Mitchell made two spectacular picks of throws in the dirt at first base to record crucial outs. Livermore, thirdbase, continued to play stellarly and fearlessly in the field. Smith continued her excellent play behind the plate blocking balls in the dirt, vacuming up bunts and getting outs, throwing runners out stealing and picking off others. The Maryland Stars Girls Fastpitch Softball Program is based in southern Carroll County and hosts teams at the 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18&Under age groups. More information about the Stars may be found at their web site at or by contacting Glen Warholic at or glen@thewarholics.com. Thanks Glen for the great article. I know you have to be very proud of the Stars. Kat Betts and Kerrigan Simpson combined pitching efforts to win the Delaware District 1 Major Little League softball championship Wednesday night. Now on to the state tournament for them. Logan Downes pitched a complete game 7-2 win to propel the Laurel Little League Junior (13-14 year old) softball team to the District 3 championship game Saturday.

After losing the winner s bracket game, Delmar s Major Little League team came back Thursday to eliminate District 6 and set up a title shot against Perryville Friday for the Maryland State championship. Delmar needed to defeat Perryville twice and unfortunately lost the first one. Maryland Magic Orange/Wagner s 12U are in Ohio this weekend trying to tweak the team for the Pony Nationals in Raleigh beginning next weekend.in their first game Friday they took on the Hilliard Cats from OH and Shelby Smith got the 15-0 win going 3 innings with 0 walks and allowing 2 hits with 3 K s. Darby Fitzpatrick was 3 for 4 with an RBI and scored 3 runs. Hannah Eslick was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI. Lexi Jones was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI s. Emily Allen was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI s. Emily and Lexi had doubles. Hannah Eslick had a triple. Darby Fitzpatrick had 3 stolen bases. Later in the day they took on the Pittsburgh Power and registered another win. Mackense Greico took the mound and pitched 4 innings allowing 4 runs on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks. Mac got the win and Shelby Jones got a save, pitching the final inning. At the plate Darby Fitzpatrick was again 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 3 stolen bases. Sammi Johnson was 2 for 3 while Lexi Jones was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI s. Emma Lamartina was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Saturday morning the team took on the Toledo Wizards and got a 5-3 win in ITB. Shelby got the stars allowing 1 run on 2 hits in 3.1 innings with 4 K s and 2 walks. With the game tied she gave way to Darby Fitzpatrick who went 2.2 innings, yielding 2 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and 1 K. Darby got the win. Again Darby was 3 for 4 at the plate with a stolen base. Emily Allen was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI s. Alleigh Townsend was 1 for 1.Shelby had a double. In their next game Alleigh Townsend took the mound and produced her first no-hitter for the team over the Windsor Wildcats out of Ontario. Alleigh went 6 innings with 4 K s and 1 walk which stopped her from a perfect game. For the winners of the 9-0 game Lexi Jones was 3 for 4 with 2 triples, Hannah Eslick had a homer and a triple, Shelby Smith was 2 for 3, Alleigh was 1 for 2 with an RBI. This gave the team a 4 and 0 record with one more pool game to play today. They would face the Raiders out of Michigan. In this game Shelby got 3.2 innings, Darby Fitzpatrick went 1/3 of an inning. Mackense Greico went 2 batters and was relieved by Alleigh Townsend. Alleigh got the save and Shelby got the win in the 10-9 nail biter. Offensively, Alleigh Townsend and Emily Allen were 3 for 3. Alleigh had 4 RBI s and Emily scored 3 runs. Sammi Johnson and Shelby Smith each had two hits.hannah Eslick, Darby Fitzpatrick and Emma Lamartina each had hits. On Sunday in single elimination they again had to face the Pittsburgh Power. This time Alleigh Townsend took the mound and in blistering heat threw a 2-hit 6-0 shutout in the semi-final game. She threw 21 first pitch strikes to 24 batters faced and threw 46 strikes out of 58 total pitches for a phenomenal 79.3% strikes. Offensively, Emily Allen was 1 for 2 with a double and RBI. Hannah Eslick had a triple and an RBI and Lexi Jones had a triple. Emma Lamartina had a hit and an RBI. Alleigh Townsend was 1 for 2 with an RBI. Darby Fitzpatrick and Sammi Johnson also had hits. This propelled them into the championship against the Michigan Finesse. Both teams entered the game undefeated. Finesse, last year s Pony National Champion, struck first with 4 runs off of Magic starter Shelby Smith. Darby Fitzpatrick took over the pitching duties in the 3 rd inning and held the Finesse to two

runs through the 7 th inning. She limited the Finesse to 5 hits, struck out 2 and walked 3. Darby, Hannah and Lexi had the only 3 hits for Magic. Lexi had the lone RBI. The team finished 2 nd in the tournament, losing only one game. It was a good tournament to take in to the Pony Nationals. The Morris County Belles were in Plainfield, Mass participating in a Rhode Island Thunder tournament. On Friday against the Massachusetts Inferno they won the game 6-3. Gianna Kinhofer got the start and Taylor August finished. Annah Brittingham had 2 singles, an RBI and a stolen base. Later Friday they took on the East Massachusetts Panthers Elite. Annah Brittinham got the complete game 1-0 shutout, striking out 12 while allowing 4 hits. Saturday morning Taylor August got the start and took a complete game 4-3 loss. Annah Brittingham had a single and a RBI double. Annah won the game against the Nor Easters as she pitched a 3-hitter with 10 K s. Taylor pitched the final win of the day, a 7-0 victory over the Central Massachusetts Thunder. Annah pitched the final 2 innings with 4 K s, a walk and a single. Next, On Sunday morning the Belles faced the Rhode Island Riot. Taylor August took the mound and grabbed a bat to hit her 2 nd homer of the tournament, a 3-run shot. She was trying to do it all! The team won Shannon Smith drove in Paige Murphy. Annah Brittingham doubled in two runs and Sam Greenberg had an RBI single. Sam Frungillo went 2 for 3. In the next game AJ took the mound and the Belles took on the Concord Raiders Elite. After retiring the side she came up to bat and homered. Then she struck out the side and the Belles were up 2-0. Another run scored for a 3-0 lead and AJ singled. In the next inning she got 2 groundouts and a K, followed by a ground out, K and pop-up while the Belles increased their lead to 5-0. The game ended in a 7-0 win. Annah went 6 innings, allowing 1 hit, striking out 10 and allowing 2 walks. She had a 3 for 3 game at the plate, as did Taylor Trifolis. Both girls had 3 RBI s. Sam Smurf Greenberg was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI s. In the 3 rd game of the day, the semi-final the Belles took off on a 3-0 tear when Sam (Smiley) Frungillo belted a 2- run homer. Nicole Iannarone singled and scored on a single by Annah Brittingham. Sam (Smurf) Greenberg singled and Cary Houston doubled. Taylor August took the mound until the 5 th inning when Annah came in to relieve. After getting out of a jam with runners and 2 nd and 3 rd with one out, she gave up a solo homer in the 6 th that gave Central Mass Thunder the 4-3 lead that the Belles could not overcome. Maryland Magic Elite 16U are in Connecticut for the USA Elite/Northern Exposure Showcase. They lost their first 4-0 and won their 2 nd. After going 2 and 2 Saturday, they faced the Gold Coast Hurricanes Sunday. They lost 8-1. Next they faced the Chelsire Wildcats out of NY and battled to a 3-3 tie for their final game. They finished the showcase Logan Downes and the Laurel, DE Little League team (junior division) won the District 3 championship Saturday. Logan picked up the mound win and now they advance to the Delaware State Championship round. The Delaware Diamonds 14U Gray went 4 and 1 in the Showcase in Glen Burnie, MD. I went to watch my grandson Brad Dryden pitch for the Millsboro Major Little League in District play Friday after pitching lessons. Unfortunately he gave up a solo homer and they lost to Lower Sussex 1-0. Saturday they played Woodbridge and won that by mercy rule and then Sunday they defeated Rehoboth 15- Brad had a monster 3-run homer. When they played Cape they lost Brad was 1 for 1 with 2 walks.
