1 Three Games Highlight Fall Baseball Schedule The West Virginia University baseball team will play three games as part of its fall schedule. Fans will get their first look at the 2018 Mountaineers when WVU hosts Marshall on Friday, Oct. 6, and the annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Oct. 7. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m. ET, while Saturday s game will begin at 11:30 a.m. The fall slate concludes on Sunday, Oct. 15, against Bucknell at noon ET. All three of WVU s fall games will be played at Monongalia County Ballpark, and admission is free for all fans. For fans unable to attend the games, updates will be available by following and connecting with the Mountaineers on social media at WVU Baseball on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, the games will be streamed on Twitter I m anxious to play these games, we have three games this fall, that s pretty unusual to have the ability to do that, WVU coach Randy Mazey said. The new guys, who we re counting on helping this team in the spring, it s nice to have these guys get three or four games under their belt before it counts for real. There are going to be jitters, it s better that that happens when it doesn t really count that much then when it counts a lot. We re going to use these games as a way to get a lot of guys experience that need experience. A large number of former players will be back for the Alumni Game. All three Mountaineers from the 2017 team that played professionally this past summer, Jackson Cramer, Kyle Davis and Jackson Sigman, will be in attendance. At last year s Alumni Game, the Mountaineers beat the alumni, 12-5, in the team s lone fall game of the season. WVU scored four runs in the first inning and took a 6-2 lead into the seventh. Both teams plated three runs in the seventh inning before the current Mountaineers added a run in the eighth and two in the ninth. The Mountaineers and Thundering Herd are familiar foes, meeting twice in WVU won both games, 14-7, on April 4 in Morgantown and 8-4 on April 18 in Charleston. West Virginia is all-time against Marshall and has won 15 of the last 18 regular-season meetings. Marshall went in 2017 with a mark in Conference-USA play. West Virginia is 3-2 all-time in the regular-season against Bucknell. The series began in 1910, when WVU lost a pair of home games. The two teams did not meet again until 2006, when the Mountaineers swept a three-game series in Winston Salem, North Carolina, to open the season. The Bison are coming off a season in 2017 and a mark in Patriot League action. Cramer, Davis and Sigman helped lead West Virginia to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017, the 12th in program history. WVU advanced to the NCAA regional final for the third time in school history and posted a record. Twenty-six players return from last year s team, including nine of a program-record 12 that earned All-Big 12 Team honors in FALL SCHEDULE Friday, Oct. 6 Marshall 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 Alumni Game 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 15 Bucknell Noon All times Eastern All dates and times are subject to change Free Admission for Fall Games All of WVU s fall games will be played at Monongalia County Ballpark, and admission will be free for all fans. In the NCAA Tournament, second-seeded WVU went 2-2 and advanced to the regional final for the third time and first since 1982, falling to topseeded and 13th-ranked Wake Forest, which hosted the four-team regional. The Mountaineers went and finished fourth in the Big 12 Conference, the No. 1 RPI conference in the country, as seven of the league s nine teams made the NCAA Tournament. WVU advanced to the Big 12 Championship semifinals for the second time in as many years, going 2-2 at the conference tournament. West Virginia finished the season ranked No. 20 in the NCAA RPI. The Big 12 had five teams in the top 25 and was the No. 1 RPI in the nation. In the final national rankings, WVU received votes in the NCBWA Top 25 and Coaches Poll. WVU entered the national rankings for the first time since 1982 on April 17. West Virginia was ranked No. 21 in the Baseball America Top 25 and the D1 Baseball rankings and ranked nationally in five of the six major polls for the first time in program history. The Mountaineers once again played in front of record-breaking crowds throughout the 2017 season at Monongalia County Ballpark. A total of 40,616 fans, an average of 1,846 per game, filled the stands, both program records. The home slate was highlighted by a crowd of 3,415 that saw WVU face No. 3 TCU on April 15, the largest home crowd in team history. West Virginia went 10-8 against top-25 teams in 2017, with all but six games coming on the road. Sophomore designated hitter/right-handed pitcher Braden Zarbnisky was named to the NCBWA All-America Third Team, becoming the 17th All-American in team history and earning the 15th total All-America accolade in coach Randy Mazey s five seasons. Zarbnisky was also named the NCBWA District II Player of the Year and a John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award finalist. Zarbnisky led the team with a.336 batting average and a.417 on-base percentage and had 42 hits with 12 RBIs and 17 walks. On the mound, he led WVU with a 6-2 record and six saves in 39.1 innings pitched. He had a 2.75 ERA, second on the team, with 46 strikeouts. WVU has had 16 picks in Randy Mazey s five seasons, the most in a five-year stretch in team history. Additionally, senior Jackson Sigman signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Royals organization. West Virginia played its first-ever game at PNC Park on May 10, a 4-2 victory against Penn State in the first collegiate baseball game at the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Mountaineers first game at the Pirates home ballpark since 1998 at Three Rivers Stadium. WVU played 62 games in 2017, the most in a single season in team history. Jackson Cramer and Kyle Davis each played in a school-record 62 games, Kyle Gray walked a team-record 44 times and Jackson Sigman made 36 appearances, the most in a single season in program history. The Mountaineers went 2-1 against No. 3 TCU, WVU s first-ever series win in the all-time series. The third-ranked Horned Frogs are the highestranked opponent WVU has defeated in program history and the third and fourth wins over a top-five team in the last two seasons. West Virginia went 2-0 against No. 18 Coastal Carolina on Feb. 25 and 27, its first games against a ranked foe in 2017 and its first-ever games against a defending national champion. Jackson Cramer had a career-best five hits, four extra-base hits and three doubles, all one shy of tying the school record, and he added a career-high six RBIs. Sophomore Jimmy Galusky was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List on April 18, which honors the nation s top shortstop. Sophomore catcher Ivan Gonzalez was named to the 2017 Johnny Bench Award Watch List, honoring the top Division I collegiate catcher.
